Elections declared!
Today, representatives of the Transition Government announced that the elections for President, the Republican Senate, and Chamber of Tribunes is to take place on March 15, 1954. The representatives declared that they were confident that the Provinces were capable of managing their own elections. The Council’s job now will be to monitor the elections of the various Provinces to ensure there is no voter fraud and that all votes are being counted. The Transition Council has also requested that foreign democracies send representatives to aid in the monitoring and counting process.

“Each Province shall organize and execute the elections held within their territory. Monitors from the Federal Level, and any nation whom volunteers, shall ensure the fairness of all the elections and the counting process. For the President of the Republic, each Province shall count the votes and send them to the Federal Government in Heredia for final counting. If all goes according to plan, the election results should be released on the same day,” a spokesman announced.

The announcement coincides with the official launch of the successor parties of the Federal Republicans. Political leaders came together and formally agreed upon a peaceful dissolving of the Federal Republicans. The party was formed of a coalition of a wide range of political ideologies for the sole purpose of drafting a new constitution for the Republic. The varying ideologies could not function as a governing party. The successor parties are, as follows: El partido progresista aurariano (PPA, Aurarine Progressive Party,), La unión del sindicato revolucionario de la mano de obra (USRMO, the Union of the Revolutionary Syndicate for the Worker), and la confederación aurariano de la derecha autónoma (CADA, Aurarine Confederation of the Autonomous Right).
Official death toll of the Revolution released:
70,000
Conservatives desperately trying to organize a national campaign.

The parties have been organizing a list of candidates for the Senate and Chamber for a while now. Tribunes will be elected directly by the people and each province will have a varying amount of Tribunes, dependent upon their population. Senators will be elected by the legislatures of each province, and each province shall receive two. Numerous parties are organizing, but only three have enough influence to achieve the presidency. For the first time, today, announced their candidates for the Presidency of the Republic:

PPA: Roberto Urbina of Naranjo
CADA: Esteban Nazario Alvarado of Aluche
USRMO: Espiridión Abarca of Navadijos

Many are speculating that Roberto Urbina will have no trouble winning the presidency by a wide margin. A long time Tribune from a backwoods area of the province of Naranjo, Urbina made a name for himself as the leader of the liberal faction in Vicario’s Government. He is now commonly called “El Padre de la República,” for his leadership in the Summer Revolution. Roberto Urbina is the only candidate that is not running for a secondary office, if he is not to be President, he will not be in the new government.

Esteban Nazario Alvarado, the Bishop of the Diocese of Aluche, is a well-known name in the Northeast. He was staunchly opposed to the armed revolt and called for calm on all sides. Alvarado is heavily regarded for his staunch conservatism.
Alvarado’s campaign is pledging for a sense of normalcy to return to Auraria, government lead by a sensible mind as opposed to a radical revolutionary.

Espiridión Abarca is the least known of the three on the national level. In Navadijos, Nueva Francisca, and some parts of Coronado, Abarca is known as a revolutionary and staunch opponent of the finca system and the status quo. Abarca supported the revolution, but has concerns that neither side will finish it. “The revolution cannot be lost when we have come to close to victory,” the man campaigns on. The Abarca Campaign is focusing on bringing true democracy and social justice to Auraria.

The Friendly Confines reach out to Auraria on this solemn Sunday to pray for the tens of thousands perished likely more injured throughout the revolution. In this time of healing we go on to pray that the Peoples & Patriots of Auraria grow closer in their covenant with Christ, shaking off fully the Imperial shackles of Frescania, overcoming capitalist control, and realizing His vision for Auraria as a nation and all of its citizens.

OPINION ARTICLE
Roberto Urbina's Summer Slaughter of 70,000
When I was a child, I remember learning in school of the horrors that could find their way into the daily lives of a God-fearing people. It serves as a reminder to us all of humanity’s fallible ability to govern. In the simplest of truths, men are not angels, and if they were, then there would be no need for a government. I speak of horrors of course in reference to what is being called ‘the Summer Revolution.’

No one can say that the democracy set in place by Reldón Vicario and the Vicarist Movement was a completely perfect one. As I stated above, men are not angels. What can be argued is that the Vicarist Government, though imperfect, had several avenues for which peaceful democratic expression could be made. If I may, I will explain the history of the previous months, and I’ll do it in a manner contrarian to that which the Progressives would like us to believe.

To begin, a defection of the Conservative leadership in Heredia formed the Federal Republicans and began drawing up constitutional amendments. The Progressives, under the leadership of Roberto Urbina, a man who lives in a remote village in Naranjo, removed from all the pains of society, usurped the Federal Republicans. The Progressives hijacked the Republicans, a conservative movement, and demanded an entirely new constitution be forced through, abandoning the ideas of moderate reform.
This article was written by Bishop Esteban Nazario Alvarado of Aluche
Esteban Nazario Alvara is the Aurarine Confederation of the Autonomous Right's (CADA) candidate for the President of the Republic.

Even with their aggressive manner well known, the Conservative Government agreed to allow the Federal Republicans to move forward with their constitution, going through the natural processes. When the politics of obstruction peaked, the Federal Republicans – hijacked by Progressives – refused to allow normalcy and incited rebellion in Heredia. Such insights would force José Acre, as was his constitutional responsibility, to restore the peace.

I never agreed with the usurpation of civilian government by the military, and neither did the Conservatives. What remains true is that the Progressives pushed the military to make a move in order for them to declare Heredia defunct and incite a revolution. Roberto Urbina purposefully incited rebellion in the hopes of a military crackdown to use as justification for war. Urbina saw he could not achieve political power through normal means, and decided to sacrifice 70,000 lives, children of God, to achieve his political power.
Does it surprise you that Urbina was unanimously appointed President of the transition government? Does it surprise you he is running for President? Does it surprise you that Urbina has denounced the Church and God? Urbina wants power, he is replacing aristocracy for another aristocracy – blanketing it as liberty.

70,000 are now dead. 70,000 were killed so Urbina could assume the political power he so desperately craved. Tell me, who among you lost a child, a parent, a brother, an aunt or uncle, grandparent, cousin, or friend? 70,000 families, more than 100,000 people now mourn the loss of their loved ones. Tell me, is Urbina’s violent usurpation of power worth the life of your loved one?

Be not fooled by the Progressives and now Socialists. They are ungodly and unruly. They prefer violence to process, chaos to order, atheism to God. No, I will never call it the Summer Revolution, the appropriate term is the Summer Slaughter. Roberto Urbina’s Summer Slaughter of 70,000 people.

Roberto Urbina Wins the Presidency!
Early on March 16, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal formally announced the results of the Aurarine Elections held yesterday. Although hundreds of thousands of votes were cast for a wide range of parties, only four managed to secure enough to win seats in the Chamber of Tribunes. Three of the four parties are the successors of the Federal Republicans, while the fourth is a new one to the field, la sociedad revolucionaria para una Auraria Libre, or SRAL. The three major parties are, Partido Progresista Aurariano (PPA), Confederación Aurariano de la Derecha Autónomo (CADA), and the Unión de la sindicato revolucionario de la mano de obra (USRMO). SRAL did not field a presidential candidate, focusing all of their limited resources to gaining seats on the Chamber of Tribunes.

Within an hour, the Republican Senate was assembled. Two senators were elected by their Provincial legislatures. The only rule was that the individuals could not have served on the previous Senate. Because of the simplified voting system, the results came swiftly. Interestingly, both the Progressives and Conservatives won the same number of seats, eight, leaving the socialists the remaining two seats in the Senate. This means that even if the Socialists and Progressives unite, they still do not have a 60% majority in the Senate.

The situation is different in the Chamber of Tribunes. The counting was a slow process and rather painful as the new open list mixed-member proportional system, the system created by Roberto Urbina, was put into place. As a result, the PPA garnered 40% of the seats in Chamber, making them the clear majority party, but failing to achieve a 51% majority. The next largest is the USRMO, which managed to clinch 30%, which is the highest turnout of a socialist party in the history of Auraria.
Roberto Urbina to speak before the Union of Republics in Fortaleza Real, Frescania this Friday.
New Government will not allow foreign military personnel to build bases within Aurarine Territory.

The Conservatives, CADA, gained only 25% of the Chamber, which is the lowest result for the Conservatives in the history of the country. Finally, SRAL comes in with only 5% of the seats, but that is an impressive accomplishment considering their lack of resources to throw into the elections. With the situation in The Chamber the way it is, many are suspecting the Progressives and Socialists to work together to get through the most liberal agenda the country has ever witnessed.

Without further delay, the most salient election in Auraria: the Presidency. The Supreme Electoral Tribunal announced that Roberto Urbina of Naranjo, PPA Candidate, carried the election with 56% of the vote. Runoff elections are unnecessary as Urbina has scored over 50%. Second place was Bishop Esteban Alvarado of Aluche, the conservative candidate, with 28% of the vote. Finally, USRMO candidate Epsiridión Abarca won 16% of the vote. With such huge national names as Roberto Urbina and Esteban Alvarado, for Abarca to win 16% is nothing short of impressive.

All around the nation people are cheering as a truly democratic government is to return to power, tomorrow. The winners are quickly assembling to Heredia for the official swearing in process. President of the Transition Council, Roberto Urbina, will swear in each Senator and Tribune beginning at 7 am. At 12 pm sharp, Roberto Urbina will transition from President of the Council to President of the Republic.
During the reign of the transition council, a debate came up over whether or not to call Auraria “the Second Aurarine Republic” or simply keep the name “Aurarine Republic.” The debate ended when, now, progressive and socialist members declared that “calling Auraria the second republic would acknowledge there was a first, Reldón Vicario was no republican.” With that being established, Roberto Urbina will be declared the “2[SUP]nd[/SUP] President of the Republic.” With four year terms, the next presidential election is set for 1958.

Now that the permanent government is returning, sources are showing that Foreign Minister Cayetano A. Palomo is beginning to unveil a massive, new foreign policy directive – which was orchestrated by Roberto Urbina. Clearly, the area that has the most attention is Auraria’s attitude towards Sylvania and Auraria’s position in the global community. Sources are also alluding to the fact that Auraria’s attention to the independent republic of Nicoya will be heightened, though there are no details currently.

The Continental Republic requests verification of the status of the Sylvanian Naval Base in Primer following the news of a restriction of the construction of foreign military bases in Auraria proper. It is the request of the Continental Congress that the agreement between the pre-civil war government and the Continental Republic be upheld going forward into the creation of the Second Aurarine Republic lest there be financial damages occurred from breaking the lease that both of our nations signed and agreed upon. The Continental Republic congratulates President Elect Roberto Urbina upon his democratic election by the Aurarine people and we hope that our two nations may foster better relations between us so that we may both work toward creating a free and most importantly, Republican, Occidentia.

16ú Márta 1954

The High Kingdom of Ivernia wholeheartedly welcomes this news from the Republic of Auraria, and welcomes the Aurarian people and it's restored democratic government back into the world at large, after a most chilling and brutal Civil War. We in Ivernia completely condemn the actions of the Despot Acre and find the news of this trial most reassuring. It is a great step in any nation's history to throw the dictators and destroyers in front of the halls of justice for due prosecution.

The Ivernish Imperial Military, particularly the Occidental Naval Bases ran by the Ivernish Imperial Navy upon the Ivernish Isles in the Gulf of Auraria, are expected to reduce their status from ''combat readiness'' to ''combat alert awareness'' at midnight of the day of the 16ú of March 1954. This action is due to that fact that Ivernia believes at this time for the Crisis of Auraria to be finally over as we try to restore the South Occidental nation back to Order, Peace and Prosperity. We hope in Ivernia to promote any assistance we can to Urbina's new and restored Republic, in order to close that terrible and bloody chapter of Auraria forever.

May God bless the tens of thousands of deceased, who fell to the tyrannical ways of those who wished to destroy Democracy.

To all whom it may concern,

One of the many foreign policy goals of the Aurarine Republic, under the new leadership, is to rectify what is seen by my office and myself as a failure on the part of my countrymen to secure a true and genuine friendship between our two Republics. With the victory of Sylvanian forces in the Faroes, and the victory of the Aurarine People in overthrowing a pseudo-dictatorship, Zulia-Santander as a continent moves closer to being the haven of freedom and democracy that it should be. It is truly the goal and concern of the Aurarine Republic that our two nations stand in solidarity against the numerous threats against freedom.

That being said, in regards to the Sylvanian Naval Base in Primer, the Aurarine Government will stand firm on its policy of no permanent foreign military assets within Aurarine territory. Considering the overthrow of a government by means of force, the new Aurarine Government sees no obligation to uphold the policies and treaties of the old – especially so, one that that has led to such great controversy and contention.

The Aurarine Government is willing to work with the Sylvanian Government in order to ensure that the withdrawal takes place as smoothly as possible.

Signed,

The Continental Republic protests this decision by the Aurarine government and requests that an alternative be found to losing out on a considerable investment of Sylvanian taxpayer money. Should the Aurarine government continue upon this most unfortunate course they will find Sylvanina - Aurarine relations that much worse for it and we will be forced to find some way to extract our investment directly from the Aurarine government. A change in government will not absolve Auraria of any previous responsibilities in the eyes of the Continental Congress and the Sylvanian people.

Roberto Urbina inaugurated as the 2nd President of the Republic!
In a momentous day for the Aurarine Republic, Roberto Urbina, a tribune from Naranjo, has been inaugurated as the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] President of the Republic today at 12 pm. Urbina was administered the oath of office on the Chamber floor in the Capitol by José Plaza, who served as Vice-President of the Transition Council. After the oath, The Senate and Chamber emerged and seated themselves on the outside of the capitol in preparation for President Urbina’s inaugural address. President Urbina’s speech was fifteen minutes long, but outlined the general direction he intends to put the country on over the next four years.

“The 17[SUP]th[/SUP] of March, every fourth year, a citizen of our Republic will receive the sash of the President, and take up the mantle of protecting, preserving, and defending the constitution and freedom of our people. Under this new government, the civilian government stands supreme, drawing its power from the consent of those whom it represents – the people. No longer shall there ever be considered a lawful method of suspending civilian government,” Urbina opened, and continued to Sylvania.

“The Continental Republic [of Sylvania] and the Aurarine Republic can and shall be close allies, standing in solidarity against all the threats of freedom across the world. Putting a firm foot down to fight against aggression and ensure that all peoples, regardless of color, sex, or race, can live under a republican government. I know our histories have been less than ideal, however, the future before us is brighter than ever before.”

In his speech, the President continued to promise to expand diplomatic relations across the globe and solidify the relationship between the Frescanosphere. Most interestingly, the President reaffirmed that the Island of Nicoya continues to live under oppression and that historically, they have every right to rejoin the Aurarine Republic. President Urbina also spoke against colonization and called upon the world’s empires to surrender their holdings and allow self-rule of all peoples.

President Roberto Urbina
For domestic policy, the President promised to expand the role of government in the economy and follow a policy of substitution industrialization, and force the creation of robust Aurarine Industries. President Urbina warned that Auraria’s growing economy was hindered by the Summer Revolution and that these damages must be repaired. Urbina promised a wide range of legislation designed to improve the quality of life for the poor, institute new regulations designed to secure workers’ rights, and equalize women and men. One of the more controversial policies is that Urbina promises to secularize the government, and most notably education, calling for the complete nationalization of all schools across the country and construct of approximately 1,000 more. Schools will now be forced to follow a rigorous curriculum set up by the Government.
At the end of the speech, President Urbina declared that Auraria will reemerge to the world stage as a powerful republican state, one that defends the rights of all peoples everywhere. He also confirmed Auraria’s commitment to granting asylum to any and all refugees and openness to immigration, stating “Never under my administration would a limit of 1,000 be thought of,” which many believe is a reference to the recent changes to the Ionian Constitution. Urbina noted that Yujiners have a long history in Auraria and that they shall remain safe and welcome within our borders.

“However, Auraria shall not currently nor ever again support a permanent foreign military installation within our borders,” was the final point given by President Urbina. Though separated from the portion dealing with Sylvania, it is blatantly obvious that the President was making a nonnegotiable point that no foreign bases will be allowed in Aurarine territory.

The Ionian Confederation is not surprised by this hypocritical move of the new Aurarian President. First Auraria goes back on its promise and treaty with Sylvania concerning he base that Sylvania rightfully and legally holds now Auraria insults the nation that created democracy and attempts to give it lessons of Republicanism. A man who has earned his desk after a massive bloodbath has no right to insult the choices of an entire nation. Even though Auraria was founded by immigrants, even violent colonizers, who have a moral obligation to let other immigrants live in their lands, Ionia is no such nation and has no obligation to let immigrants drain her funds.

To all whom it may concern,

First and foremost, the Aurarine Republic demands an apology from the Ionian Foreign Minister on account of accusing the election of the President of the Aurarine Republic to have been the result of a “bloodbath.” The loss of life for the implementation of a true Republic has greatly affected all peoples across our nation. The deaths never will leave the minds of the people, President Roberto Urbina especially so.cThe President of the Republic earned his desk by garnering a sizable majority of the votes in an election. Roberto Urbina did not seize power after the Summer Revolution and moved quickly to ensure a transition to civilian governments. Accusations to the contrary only show an ignorance on the part of the Ionian Government.

The agreement made between the Vicarist Government and the Continental Republic of Sylvania was met with great opposition and generated immense unrest within the Aurarine Republic. The Vicarist Government did not draw its power from the people, it was drawn from a privileged elite. The current Aurarine Government draws its power from the people, and we acknowledge the great unpopularity of the naval base in Primer. With that in mind, it would be undemocratic and irresponsible of the Government to move forward with construction. Surely a nation so well versed in democracy should know this.

On policies of immigration, in the words of Ionia, in reference to immigrants: “drain our funds,” those three words are sufficient to shed light over the entire policy of the Ionian State. Despite priding itself on being a robust democracy promoting freedom and equality, the nation views immigrants as something of a subspecies, separated from the mainstream of society. Yes, Aurarine settlers back in the time of colonization have a violent history. Auraria’s policy of open borders extends from its firm belief that all peoples should be free to live in a democracy, it is not because of a moral obligation to make amends for past events. Ionia, as opposed to Auraria, does not believe foreigners should be free to take part in the democratic experience.

This statement only serves the shed light on the very ignorance of the Aurarian government. All agreements made by one government hold all next governments responsible. That is the very pillar of international law and without it all nations would simply easily back away from treaties that they didn't deem profitable anymore with pathetic excuses such as those posed by your government. Alas however this is not an issue of ours; We do not pride ourselves in promoting equality, we pride ourselves in having CREATED Democracy some 2000 years ago, before Auraria even existed. To that extent stop lecturing us on matters of the very system which we invented. Ionia is close to unstable areas and massive waves of immigrants try to enter her every year. Without Draconian laws such as these Ionia would quickly lose her cultural cohesion; As such we allow a minimum of immigrants to enter Ionia Ionia every year and still a considerable amount of them have, nearly 200,000 have managed to move to our country over the years, many more than most nations have ever had. Ionians have almost never left Ionia, with there being almost no Ionians living abroad. As such we have no moral or legal obligation to let others live in our nation in great numbers. Since the times of the Ancient Algolnian Democracy we have allowed immigrants to live in our nation and become citizens only needing to pay an added tax. They have equal rights, as demanded by our constitution, which we fully honor something that cannot be said about Auraria's international commitments.

Let there be no misconceptions in the Aurarine public mind, as newly elected President Urbina most surely recognizes, President Rygaard's first and foremost responsibility is to the Sylvanian public, especially the Sylvanian taxpayer. The Continental Congress will be willing to give up construction of the base but only after assurances of a financial kind can be made, what has been constructed will be deconstructed, the materials sold for scrap and the cash amount deposited into the Sylvanian treasury. One year will be allowed for deconstruction. The Aurarine government must furnish compensation to an amount that is negotiable and most of all fair to both parties involved. The Continental Navy will be allowed two months to vacate any completed facilities. Failure to negotiate with us will force us to take economic measures the we do not feel right taking and will most assuredly damage Sylvanian - Aurarine relations in the long term.

Roberto Urbina speaks before the Union of Republics
When General José Acre launched his coup d’état against the civilian government in Heredia, the Union of Republics suspended Auraria’s membership. Now, that President Urbina is sworn in and is quickly working to complete the new, civilian government, the nation was readmitted to the Union. Today, President Urbina flew to Fortaleza Real in Frescania to address the Council of the Union of Republics. Urbina was greeted by thunderous applause, as he took the stage.

“First and foremost, it does my heart well to see the Aurarine Delegation reunited with her brothers and sisters in Fortaleza Real,” he opened.

“The Aurarine Government betrayed a promise to its frescanophone brethren and to its own people when José Acre used coercion to destroy the civilian government of Auraria. It was at that point that it became clear that the Aurarine System was beyond saving, and had to rebuilt, as opposed to restructured. In my home country, there is much debate that persists over the Summer Revolution, those who lost their lives,” Urbina continued, as the room silenced.

“Never will I forget the fact that this current government exists because 70,000 people lost their lives, some fighting for it, some fighting against it. 70,000 families, meaning hundreds of thousands of people lost someone near and dear to their hearts in the name of a democratic government. Every day I reminded of that sacrifice and the subsequent promise that I and all future presidents have made: to ensure our people did not die in vain, to defend the Aurarine Democracy.”

"An agreeable deal has been struck," says Palomo in reference to the Sylvanian Naval Base in Primer

Urbina’s speech included committing Auraria to the cause of decolonization in Himyar and more closely intertwining the Frescanophone nations, “as we are siblings in blood.” However, the most alarming part of Urbina’s speech was when he spoke on Nicoya, an island off the coast of Auraria.

“The Republic of Nicoya, which gained its independence in 1950, is formally offered to join with the Aurarine Republic as a full fledge province, our peoples were united for over 100 years. Nicoya and Auraria are sibling nations, and should be joined to one.”

The issue of Nicoya, whose government remains similar to the pre-war Aurarine Government, has not been addressed in Auraria in some time. Noé Casales once spoke vehemently against Frescania’s decision to separate the two after independence in 1950. Reldón Vicario, on the other hand, supported the decision and thus it was made. Urbina’s declaration to offer Nicoya the status of Province is sure to send shockwaves to both nations.

President Urbina: "The Finca System is Slavery"
Ever since the colonial times, the Finca Systems have existed and prospered in various regions of the Aurarine Republic, most notably so in Nueva Francisca and Navadijos. During the formation of the Commonwealth, Westerners wanted to see the finca system destroyed, calling it slavery. The East, obviously, countered the proposal and tensions were exploding. Governor Calderón decided to formulate a compromise that has led to over one hundred years of peace. In the Calderón Agreement, the finca system was not to expand beyond the east coast provinces (Navadijos, Primer, Acacias, Coronado, and Nueva Francisca) and the workers had to be paid.

Through the years the power of the Calderón Agreement dissipated, as it was too broad. The pay become abysmal and negligible and the finca system grew in strength across the coasts. However, due to industrialization, the system has more concentrated in Navadijos and Nueva Francisca. Socialists in the area have been protesting for decades to get the Government to address the issue. President Vicario ignored the argument completely. However, today, for the first time in history, an Aurarine Head of State has called the system for what it is: slavery.

“I do not care what clever phrasing they use or how they show their ‘humanity’ the finca system that has long been acceptable in the East is slavery and incompatible with the republican values that so many died to secure. That system will end and I will not rest until it does,” – President Urbina

PPA/USRMO directly challenge Tiburan Catholic Church

By a vote of 250-108, entirely on party lines (PPA/USRMO vs CADA/SRAL), the Chamber of Tribunes has voted on the Nationalization of Educational Institutions Act (CB 1101). The bill intends to implement a measure that would completely eradicate the notion of a private school. President Urbina, during his campaign and inaugural address, called upon an end to private schooling and demanded nationalization of all schools. The measure is one of the most radical bills passed in recent history by the Chamber of Tribunes.

The Bill will grant the Federal Government the power to seize all schools not directly operated by the State, which is namely religious schools and private schools. Speaker Huff (Valle Occidental, PPA) proposed the legislation as the principal of the PPA’s education agenda.

CADA immediately rejected the proposal, calling it an illegal breach of governmental power and “reminiscent of a dictatorship with no respect for private property or the church.” Speaker Huff responded stating the bill is calling on a constitutional provision that “all children of Auraria are to be guaranteed a public, free education.” Speaker Huff said that schools not owned by the State violated that provision.

Because CADA controls 44% of the Senate, the bill will likely die. Should that occur, rumors have persisted that President Urbina will issue an executive order under the premise of “enforcing the Constitution.” Such an executive order would easily incite challenges from Provincial courts and ultimately end in the Supreme Court determining the constitutionality of such a measure.
