KING CARL FREDERICK VI SUFFERS FROM COMPLICATIONS IN SURGERY
Car race accident has King holding onto his life as nation is in state of anxiety

[GØTERNHAVEN] - The King who was always an avid sportsman has found himself in a great deal of trouble after taking part in a timed mountain sprint in which his race car encountered problems after crossing the finish line. The King’s time was good enough for seventh place, but problems with the either his control of the car, or the car itself have placed a great deal of questions on whether or not he will live through the night. The relatively young Carl Frederick VI took his car off of a relatively steep hill where his car should have come to a stop. Instead of stopping, his car turned sharply further down the hill race and flipped down a hill where after rolling multiple times the vehicle caught fire.

The King was taken from the wreckage by the Royal Mounted Guards and immediately brought to a hospital where blunt force drama to his head appeared to be the main problem aside from slight burns. The King complained of a headache and passed out and this prompted medical scans on his head where profuse bleeding of the King’s brain has caused a great deal of pressure within his skull. This pressure can lead to severe brain damage.

Carl Frederick VI was rushed to an emergency room where holes were drilled into his skulls to release the pressure, but it is feared that action was taken too late.

Thus far the royal family has yet to make any comments, but sources close to the surgeon have suggested that the outlook does not look promising.

The city of Gøternhavn has entered into a state of vigils and prayers in which candles and flowers have been placed en masse in front of the hospital. Police have had to begin moving this outpouring of emotion to locations further away from the enterance in order to allow other patients access to the hospital. Further showings like this have been seen at the Royal Palace as well, where police urge the public to make their support visible to allow for others to access to the healthcare services.

RUMORS CONFIRMED THAT CARL FREDERICK VI IS ON LIFE SUPPORT
An tragedy has taken a man from his family, and deprived a nation of its King

[GØTERNHAVEN] - Rumors have circulated over the days that the King’s surgery to save his brain have failed. These rumors while mostly based in hearsay and wild speculation have spread so far throughout the populace that it has forced the Government to issue a statement in support of them.

Prime Minister Rasmus Olsen spoke before reporters at his home, Blåhuset, where he gave a statement on the status of the King. Prime Minister Olsen, who has led Jutmark for the past 17 years, remarked, “I feel that that past week our nation has lost a prime figure in what it means to be from the North. He was an adventurous spirit, a man without equal, who took care to his family just as much as he took to sport and education. Unfortunately it would seem sport has taken him from his family and our nation. We have lost a great leader in our world, and I have lost my best friend. I will speak directly with Prime Minister Henriksen of Østveg about succession over the next day.”

Olsen was pressed further on the issue of his death, and why it had not yet been reported, “The royal family wishes to maintain their privacy, and as such we have tried our best to keep as much information private as possible. It is understood that Carl Frederick is a public figure, but clearly he is not legally dead. He is just in what appears to be a permanent coma, and appears to be exhibiting limited to no brain function. He cannot live without the aid of machines and so there are moral questions left to be answered, both by the family, but also by the Folketing.”

The question biggest question is one of succession. Carl Frederick does not yet have a male heir, and instead has three daughters. The last one born a year ago, Margarete. Succession law would mean that a different monarch from either a far removed branch would be required, or a new King elected. The issue gives rise to the question of possible intervention from Gedeland, or even the continent. The Folketing is scheduled to meet soon after Prime Minister Olsen’s meeting with Prime Minister Henriksen.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the medical condition King Carl Frederick VI and wishes for a speedy recovery. The thought of military intervention to claim your thrown is greatly concerning, and we will seek to preserve the peace in the North. We will support the decision made by the Folketing in the ascension of your new king.

His Majesty's Government hears with distress the news coming from Jutmark about the health status of his majesty, King Carl Frederick VI. The Caledonians themselves have lost a king in a car accident fifteen years ago. We offer our condolences to both the royal family of Jutmark but also to the Jute people whom have lost a great and promising leader. We hope that peace and stability will continue to reign in Western Scania, our sister continent and that the Folketing will do what is best for the Jute people.

FOLKETING CONFIRMS EMERGENCY POWERS TO QUEEN
Changes to succession law begins in all nations of the union

[GØTERNHAVEN] - Queen Nadia was given emergency powers by the Folketing, in which she is given the powers held by the incapacitated King Carl Frederick. This was confirmed by the Folketing, which made it law in all three constitutent parts of the Realm (Jydermark, Østveg, and Finner og Isørene).

Her powers grant her the ability to sign bills into law from the Folketing, Storting, and Lagting, the Parliaments of the Realm. Ultimately, the Folketing is the main Parliamentary body and decides the supreme law of the Realm. There the Folketing, situated in Gøternhavn, has begin discussion on changing the laws of succession. The bill would institute absolute primogeniture, and would mean that Princess Katrine Frederikke, known by her peers as “Rikke” and named in honor of her grandfather, would find herself as the next Crown Princess. This is over course controversial among many conservatives that would not wish to see the Realm’s first Queen. Although Queen’s existed during the pre-modern Viking Era, the modern iterations of the Realm have maintained strict adherence to male primogeniture.

This measure has been put forward by the Conservative People’s Party in Jydermark, the Conservative Party in Østveg, and the Social Christian Union in Finner og Isørene. Already, Finner og Isørene have pledged agreement to the bill, and plan to vote tomorrow. A similar timeline is expected in the Folketing.

The problem today is in Østveg. Vehement dissatisfaction was expressed among the Conservative Party in Østveg, in which the Party has shown rare disenchantment with the leadership of Christian Henriksen. With the party fractured, it is still believed to be passed by the the Storting; however, it would need the support of the opposition, which is rumored to be making demands for its support.

Either way, the public which has not heard relevant news about the King since Prime Minister Olsen last spoke, can only now begin to see a clear picture. King Carl Frederick is likely to be near death.

We protest this constitutional coup in the strongest terms. The legitimate successor to the throne of Jydermark and Østveg is young Joachas Gunn, the Duke of Clyth, brother of Queen Julian of Gunnland. The constituent nations of the realm will not stand for a putsch that concentrates absolute power in the hands of the queen-consort and the princess royal. Nor will Clan Gunn be deprived of its rights: Her Majesty remembers promises made long ago, and will demand satisfaction if they are broken.

We reiterate: this action threatens constitutional government in Jydermark-Østveg, the legitimacy of royalty everywhere in Europe, and ultimately peace among nations.

SUCCESSION BILL PASSES FOLKETINGET BUT FAILS IN ØSTVEG
The Succession Bill only needs to be signed by Queen Nadia but questions arise

[GØTERNHAVEN] - In what can only be described as a worst case scenario Austwegian Statsminister Christian Henriksen resigned, after the Succession Bill failed to pass in the Austwegian Parliament, the Storting. The Succession Bill managed to pass easily in both Jydermark, and the overseas territories of Finner og Isørene.

Typically in this is sort of predicament, the King might ask for the bill to be debated and voted upon again with amendments to solve the problem. Then the Folketing would vote upon this version; however, there was no real reason to do so as legally, only bills must pass the Folketing for the King to sign them into law. The King agreed informally to these procedureal requests in the 19th century in order to maintain peace within the Two Kingdoms as the institution of the Monarchy depended upon it to remain viable to the people.

Today this unofficial common law arrangement stands to be broken by the ambition to keep the realm out of the hands of Gunnish Duke Joachas Gunn. The Duke of Clyth has already received support from the Kingdom of Gunnland, and from West Gouwmarken.

This complicates proceedings quite extensively for the Realm as the question of foreign interference may come to fruition if Queen Nadia signs the bill.

The Queen has indictated that she will sign the bill before the end of the week, which places a great deal of stress on the Austwegian case. The Storting has insisted that proper succession law be commenced, as the entirety of the Conservative Party revolted against the Henriksen Government forcing new party leadership. This said, when questioned about case of Joachas Gunn, interm Statsminister Jacobsen refused to confirm Gunn as the rightful heir. “The situation is obviously quite busy, and our ultimate wish is to refrain from any conflicts. This does not mean proper laws shall not be followed, and ultimately the rights of Østveg ought to be respected by the Queen.”

Folketinget Statsminister Olsen has stated quite to the contrary, “We expect Princess Rikke to assume her place on the throne. It has been decided by the people of the Two Kingdoms that it shall be done, and therefore we cannot hesitate waiting for a backwards and misogynist political party to come to its senses.”

Olsen was further asked about the Gunnish Duke and he was quick to dismis the notion, “I’ve read the dispatch and the news about it. It is not my position to judge why the Gunners would want to invite their Duke to our free Northern Kingdoms when we still have a living King on the throne for all intents and purposes. Our beloved Frederick still has a pulse, and this decision made by the Folketing was to make a statement about our belief in dear Rikke.”

Either way, the domestic and foreign reaction will be tremendous should the Queen sign the bill.

The palace coup, with its ultraconservative supporters in the Jydermark parliament, is taking place under the nose of Carl Frederick VI. We have learned from Clan Gunn that the king clearly communicated his desire to young Joachas that he would be proud to have him as an heir. If His Majesty wished for such a bill to be signed, one can only imagine that he would put his signature upon it. Worse, it is being forced upon the Austwegian people. The constitution of the Two Kingdoms is not meant to allow Jydermark to dominate Østveg.

Joachas, Duke of Clyth, will always respect the constitutional laws and parliamentary traditions of the Two Kingdoms when he accedes the throne.

Obviously Queen-consort Nadia has no constitutional authority to sign this succession bill against the stated will of the rightful King. To sign this bill would lead Jydermark-Østveg towards civil war, and risks dragging the North into a serious conflict. Time must be made for diplomacy and negotiation before it is too late. Our ambassador in Gøternhaven has received instructions.

Stephen G. Larkin, MT
Foreign Minister of Gunnland

[SECRET COMMUNIQUÉ]

His Excellency Martin mLd. Gordon, Ambassador

The Kingdom of Gunnland desires peace. Queen Julian believes that her young family is being taken advantage of, since their older and more powerful leaders have tragically died. The Thing of All Gunnishmen has no cause to vote for war, but the government cannot stop Clan Gunn from pursuing its interest in this succession crisis. Clan Gunn may use violent means, escalating an already tense situation.

Here are the terms of a peaceful settlement that we propose. Joachas Gunn, the Duke of Clyth, is four years old, and will not attain the Gunnish age of majority for twelve more years. Her Majesty Queen Julian proposes arranging the marriage of Joachas to Margarete when she is of age, thereby reuniting the royal lines and avoiding future conflicts. Until that time, Princess Katrine Frederikke could rule Jydermark-Østveg as regent. We would ask for this treaty to be drawn up in writing, and to be given some proper assurances that it would be carried out in good faith. But by these terms, crisis and war can be averted.

THE SUCCESSION BILL IS SIGNED
Austwegian demands intensify as Jydermark moves forward
[GØTERNHAVEN] - Queen-Consort Nadia signed the Succession Bill this evening which officially places Rikke as the new Crown Princess. Celebrations began in the capital city to commemorate the occasion as many toasted to the end of a controversial period of time in which the future of the nation seemed fairly uncertain. These celebrations were not seen across the Two Kingdoms, as the Austwegians immediately countered with a booklet they declare as the Constitution of the Austwegian People.

This new booklet presented by new Prime Minister Einar Kundsen, is a collection of articles which are meant to assure the Austwegian people of basic provisions and rights. He claimed that this constitution would forever prevent this sort of mismanagement by the Folkting ever again. That such questions of crisis would require the Austwegian people to sign onto the changes, and that the Prime Minister would now lead a very different nation moving onto the future, where a violation of these clauses would give Østveg the fundamental and legal right to end the special relationship.

Kundsen’s demands of this constitution, also gave the Austwegian people the right to determine their own laws, and the separation of the joint army. Not all of the constitution has been made public yet, and Kundsen states that only upon the King’s death would it be published. Subsequently, then the Crown Princess, then Queen must sign the constitution in the same ceremony.

News about this constitution was muted in the capital city, and it is unknown how the Crown Princess will respond to the demands.

Elben condemns this effort to disenfranchise the rightful heir, Joachas Gunn. It is especially concerning to see that the Austwegian people were not consulted on such a fundamental constitutional question. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to monitor the situation and confer with Elben's allies in the Council of the North regarding this turn of events.

THE KING IS DEAD. LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!
Austwegians refuse recognition of new Queen!
[GØTERNHAVN] - With great remorse, the King is dead. Long live the Queen!

With much anticipation, and with the deadlock in negotiations stammering onward, talks broke down between the Austwegian and Jyske Parliaments after the sudden announcement of the King's death. Jydermark then immediately crowned Queen Katrine Frederikke I.

The news came as a shock to the nations, as again the Two Kingdoms are thrust into mourning. News in Austwegian circles has placed the sudden death of the King at the hands of Queen-Mother Nadia. Overburden with guilt, and angered at her husband being used as a political tool, Austwegian local media has portrayed Nadia as a woman who has decided to pull the plug on her husband's life. Doctors have refused to answer questions concerned the circumstances of the King's death stating that the matter is private, and it was never certain how much longer the King could live.

Either way, the Two Kingdom's is left with a difficult situation. Jydermark, as well as its dependency Finner og Isørene have recognized the Queen. The Austwegians have refused, stating that it demands the signature of the Queen upon their constitution. The Queen has issued no comment on signing such a document, and only gave this quote, "I over no solace to those who refuse to recognize my reign. Any such demands henceforth is an insult to his memory."

The Kingdom of Gunnland condemns this act of regicide and usurpation, not only as a civil crime and a tyrant's declaration of war against the Jutish and Austwegian peoples, but also as a violation of international law.

Joachas, rightful and recognized King of Jydermark-Østveg, is much aggrieved at the death of his testator. A Mass is being said at St. Andrew Cathedral in Windhaven for His Majesty.

We are concerned about the situation in Jydermark-Østveg. The fact that one half of the country supports Her Majesty Princess/Queen Katrine Frederikke and the other half of the country His Majesty Prince/King Joachas leads to a potentially explosive situation. We have decided not to take a stance in this conflict. For pragmatic reasons, we will treat Her Majesty Princess/Queen Katrine Frederikke as the Head of State of Jydermark-Østveg until the succession question has been answered. Furhtermore, we will consider Her Majesty Princess/Queen Katrine Frederikke Queen of Jydermark-Østveg and His Majesty Prince/King Joachas King of Jydermark-Østveg until the succession question has been answered.
We offer our assistance in finding a solution to the conflict that will suit all parties involved. We invite representants of the Jute, representants of the Austwegians, representants of Her Majesty Princess/Queen Katrine Frederikke and representants of His Majesty Prince/King Joachas to a peaceful location in Eiffelland in order to find such a solution. AUSTWEGIANS UNABLE TO COME TO TERMS
Inaction by the Parliament in Østveg leaves few roads forward

[GØTERNHAVN] - Austwegians find themselves in a difficult period of time as pressures from multiple directions take their toll.

The first option presented to the Austwegians is to simply agree to terms with the Queen Katrine Frederikke. They'd be ceding the position they stood from, and this would undeniably weaken the reputation and the importance of the Austwegian Parliament within circles of Jydermark. The next option is to offer the same terms the Austwegians offered Queen Katrine Frederikke to the Gunnish claim of Joachas. From here the ball would move to the court in Gunnland to accept such a restrictive crown in Østveg. Lastly, the Austwegians can outright declare themselves a self-governing Republic of Østveg, much to the joy of the liberal minority party.

There is not much wiggle room in any of these propositions, which is why it has become quite clear that Queen Katrine Frederikke has not, and will not cede any of her bargaining position. She stands to gain little by accepting the hard demand of the Austwegians. She cannot give a counter-proposal as that also weakens the Union in a manner that may be difficult to rebound from an inevitable split. Thus, why wait ten years for a split, when a split could happen tomorrow? She demands the status quo and the recognition of the norms of the Two Kingdoms.

With the Queen unable to yield ground, the question directly falls back to Østveg. The problem is that no matter the choice that is made in the Austwegian Parliament, there will be large minorities of citizens who will be unhappy.

Adding to this problem is that democracy cannot solve it either. The current government cannot stand down and request for new elections. They'd have to have that confirmed by the monarch. There is no monarch, nor a representative of the monarch that the Austwegians currently recognize. To have the government call for new elections would be in some sense to permanently disband the current iteration of Østveg. This prospect in turn places Østveg into constitutional crisis in a second, and different form. Who would create government and open the new government? Katrine Frederikke? Joachas?

The only chance for a solution would potentially be the peace summit suggested by Eiffelland. However, this summit places its own questions into play. There is no reason for Joachas to rescind his claim. There is no reason for Katrine Frederikke to rescind hers. Any resolution might also divide the country, and this is no in the interest of the Austwegians.

Is the only hope for the Austwegians to let the status quo continue? This might seem hopeful to just pretend nothing has ever happened. Never recognize the new Queen or King, and thus never have to change how things progress. The problem is that Østveg will be demanded to have fresh elections in two years, and thus the problem comes to surface again.

The Austwegian people must be confronted via referendum. Anything else, can be questioned. This referendum must then be accepted by all parties, those in Jydermark and Gunnland obviously, but also those in Østveg as well be they Monarchists in favor of either Katrine Frederikke, Joachas, or another outside party, and also of course of the Republicans. This is a project that cannot be negotiated. Østveg must demand these terms and hope that everyone will agree. Anything else, and the project may fail, and one gunshot can spark conflict in the entire region

The Two Kingdoms of Jydermark-Østveg appreciate the concern of the Government of Eiffelland. As it is the policy of this Government, we must decline the invitation of your Kingdom to collaborate negotiations between the pretender King, and the rightful Queen of the North. It is our wholehearted feeling that this matter is one of domestic issue, and therefore ought not require foreign intervention.

This Government however believes that dialogue may improve a woeful situation, and may require the aid of communication between parties. The Two Kingdoms would accept yourself Herr Kögler as a skyddsmakt or protecting power between the representatives of our Two Kingdoms and Gunnland. Our government sees fit for there to be no representation within Gunnland while their nation actively causes mischief within our borders.

Should you accept, we hope to be a constant communication with your Kingdom as the course of this crisis continues.

Of course I am willing to take up the role of middle man between Jydermark-Østveg and Gunnland in this matter. However, I have to inform you of the fact that I will step down as Minister of Foreign Affairs as soon as the new Cabinet has been formed. Should my role as middle man be passed over to the new Minister then, or do you wish me to continue in that role despite the fact that I won't be a Minister then?

AUSTWEGIANS RUMORED TO OFFER CROWN TO JOACHAS
Terms will likely be rejected as all power will be vested in prior institutions

[GØTERNHAVN] - News of rumors from Østveg has been plentiful; however, it is has been echoed by several sources close to Politiken that the Austwegians will informally offer recognition in Joachas. The terms to be set by the Austwegians are quite strict. Østveg will continue to respect the current defense conditions of the Two Kingdoms, and the Parliament will take full power of all politics. Foreign policy would be within the hands of the Government. Joachas would be unable to dissolve Parliament, instead Joachas would have to appoint a Governor from a member of Parliament. Joachas would also be required to reside in Østveg for 11 months a year, else he would be considered as abdicated.

The terms offer little to Joachas other than a the role of Head of State, and the title.

Rumors were refused to be discussed by ministers within Jydermark. The Queen herself stating that until there is something more concrete than heresay, negotiations between the Crown and the Austwegian Parliament would continue.
