NEWS FROM THE CAPITAL OF THE WESTERNESSE STATES OF AMBROSIA
PRESIDENT EYES THE FUTURE
Written by Glenn Rice
On an uncharacteristically cold morning in Saint Theosburg, capitol of the Westernesse States of Ambrosia (WSA), President Robert Hirschfeld entered an auditorium filled with students from the University Central Westernesse. In contrast with the budding pupils Hirschfeld presents with a short white beard and hair, wrinkles that appear with every expression, and the subdued energy of a tenured President.
"How are you doing?" Hirschfeld asked the collegiate crowd to meager morning cheer, "And how would you say I am doing as President?" he then asked to a much larger round of chants and applause. With an approval rating of 55.4% from the general public, Robert Hirschfeld would be expected to commence a victory lap opportunity to complete his vision as President.
Instead, Hirschfeld is stepping back and listening.
"This is where I'm supposed to list the great things I think I've done and encourage you to do great things for our country." Hirschfeld grumbled with his eyes peering down at a long prepared speech, "I think I'd rather hear what great things you want to do with your lives; where do you want to take the Westernesse States? . . I'm serious! . ."
As a Long Cottage (residence of president) Correspondent for thirty-eight years, I have never seen an Ambrosian President stumble into such an uncomfortable moment with a crowd. After nearly a minute he exercised his presidential privilege by pointing to a young man in the crowd.
"I think we need to pick a side between DDI and ODS!" the young man suggested among a crowd of fellow baseball team players. The student had touched upon a hot button issue in Saint Theosburg among the political talking heads with economists leaning towards the Organization of Democratic States, and conservative ideologues advocating alignment with the Democratic Defense Initiative.
"Okay, but what would you do? That was my question . ." Hirschfeld reminded beneath eyes darting from security personnel and mouths open aghast at the lack of decorum being displayed by the WSA President.
"I WOULD ASK TO . ." a female student began to shout before being pushed down by her peers, but Hirschfeld waived his hand up to indicate that she should be allowed to speak. "What would you do then, Miss?"
"I would have us put hooks of observation in both . . and, and . . invite the Rurikgrad Pact to a homeland invasion exercise!" she shouted before whispers, jeers, and hands pushed her down once more.
"I've heard you Miss, and I think we actually ought to try that." Hirschfeld said with a rare smirk and a nod. Whether the President and the nation will pursue one denim jean wearing young lady's proposition remains uncertain at the present.
