A ROAD-RAIL BRIDGE FROM RURIKGRAD TO CALIDIA BY 1959
Construction of the Kadiko-Calidian Friendships Bridge commences with a Grand Ceremony

Rurikgrad - In a grand ceremony that took place earlier today the Supreme Leaders of both the Democratic Republic of Kadikistan and the People's Socialist Republic of Calidia, Glorious Leader Marshall Nikolai Leninov and People's President August Martz, symbolically placed the first bricks of what will be a bridge between Rurikgrad and Aberdwyff. The latter is the industrial heart of Calidia and the small nation's largest city only 30 kilometres away from the capital of Dubsbury. Immediately after the ceremony was concluded the first shift began for the strong construction workers preforming their daily duties. Once completed the bridge will include 4 lanes of vehicle traffic and 2 railway lines of no less than 19 kilometres long and 60 metres high. Construction is expected to be finished by the end of 1959 as the workers and engineers will work around the clock with the finest materials our vast nation has to offer. Once completed the project will not only greatly increase the economic relations between Kadikistan and Calidia, but it will also be a permanent mark of prestige for both the People's Government's of Calidia and Kadikistan.

The economic and financial cost of the 'People's Bridge of Friendship' is expected to be roughly one billion grads, but our Glorious Leader reassured the construction workers and party members present during the ceremony that it was essential to assure the strong connection between Kadikistan and Calidia. This bridge will also form a strong fist against other nations in the Gothic Sea region who seek to undo the progress that has been made for the proletariat in the past two years. Nations like Trivodnia, which has recently stepped up its hostile rhetoric towards Kadikistan by threatening to abandon its neutrality and moving closer to the Trier Concordat, are expected to react fiercly. They will not understand that the existence of the bridge will not only greatly benefit the population of both Kadikistan and Calidia, but also indirectly increase the regional economy and fortify the position of the Gothic Sea in international trade. Other nations such as Ivernia and Lauenburg will also protest, but even though the first is a fascist-imperialist state and the latter has more than once expressed its desire to retake Calidia from the hands of its people, they will fail in their attempts to end our successes.

Besides celebrating the initiation of the construction of the grand bridge a spokesperson for the People's Government announced that loyal members of the Kadikistani Communist Workers' Party will be allowed to travel to Calidia with all expenses paid for by the State for no less than one week of leisure. These first forms of paid vacations are part of a new experiment to increase the productivity of the workers and the farmers. Citizens will be rewarded for their hard work during the year by one week of vacation in a beautiful location in Kadikistan or abroad. With such ingenuity we are sure that our nation will triumph over any difficulties that we might face as a result of the Global Social-Capitalist Conspiracy.

Conversation between two farmers and a police officer at a coffee shop, in some rural village of Mopsia.
"I heard on the radio that the Kadikistanis are shooting their own farmers."
"Poor bastards. As if they're to blame for the crop failure."
"Let them shoot I say. They'll buy your grain, and we'll have to shoot less of them when the time comes."
"Let's hope it doesn't come to that, Mr. Officer. My son is doing his service in Melingia."
"One of these days, you could wish the farmers would give Leninov a taste of his own 'revolution'."

The proposed bridge between Calidia and Kadikistan is a barely disguised attempt to restrict Trivodnian access to the Gothic Sea, and a needless provocation at a time of heightened regional tensions.

Contrary to the claims of the Kadikistani government, the Free States has not abandoned its constitutional neutrality, and continues to pursue an active policy of positive engagement with all its neighbours.

We have summoned the Kadikistani ambassador in Amstov to provide an explanation for this belligerent move, and will be instructing our own embassy in Ivar to seek further clarification.

"We assure the States of Trivodnia that the Kadiko-Calidian Bridge is in no way a threat to the States or their respective commerce. Should the Trivodnian leadership feel the need, we would be glad to answer any questions they might have. We are willing to make serious investment in Trivodnian infrastructure to redirect their trading through the Gothic Sea through Rurikgrad while it will still be possible for smaller transport vessels to sail under the road-rail bridge. There are countless options for us to consider before reaching for the weapons. We are sure we can come to a mutually profitable agreement.

Even if we do not we will not be deterred from engaging in this next progression to better the Kadikistani socialist economy. We will remind the Trivodnian regime that the head of the Gothic Sea is a small place and with the Revolutionary Gothic Sea Fleet on high alert ever since the Milesian Revolution it is extremely dangerous. Any aggression from Trivodnian naval units will be seen as a hostile act against the Party and the State. Our retaliation shall be total and unconditional. We hope our western neighbours will see the benefits of the People's Bridge of Friendship and chose the path of peace and progress rather than instability and conflict."

We see the same problem with this bridge between RUrikgrad and Calidia. We don't think it will help Trivodnia to redirect its transports for Scania through Rurikgrad, and we don't think it will be considered a viable alternative. But what about fitting the middle of the bridge as a tunnel? In that way, the harbours in Northern-Trivodnia are still reachable for larger vessels, while Kadikistan and Calidia still have their road and railway connection.

The Federal Republic has an extensive trading relationship with Trivodnia, and seeks immediate reassurance from Kadikistan that the free and unfettered access of Teloran vessels of all sizes will not be impeded by the construction of this bridge. We wish to extend the offer of co-ordinating financial arrangements to convert the central section of the bridge to a tunnel - if Kadikistan agrees, Telora will underwrite 15% of any loans needed to fund this project, and we invite other European states to join us in this effort. It is in the interests of all the peoples of northern Europe that we reach an equitable agreement.

"The cost of an endeavour such as a tunnel far exceeds the careful budgetary planning that preceded the project of the People's Bridge of Friendship. According to a rough estimation made by our specialists the tunnel plan would magnify the cost with no less than 40%. We are willing to carry our share of the burden, should the States of Trivodnia find this to be an agreeable solution. From this perspective we would like to invite Eiffellandian, Teloran and Trivodnian engineers and prospectors to find the most efficient way to work out the theory of a tunnel. But while we would remain committed to supply al necessary materials we will not lay the entire cost of this tunnel on the Kadikistani people. We are willing to provide the people of Trivodnia and especially those of Jatvigaria with better infrastructure and even a tunnel should an international group of specialists deem it possible, but everyone must suffer their share of the financial burden. Indeed the regional government of Jatvigaria nor the central government in Amstov have been a part in the making of this decision, yet we simply can not let them stand in the way of our national progress. We believe that we have given suitable compensations and if they are met we will include Trivodnia in any future decision-making regarding the People's Bridge of Friendship. The bridge will be made as is our sovereign right since it will not exit Calidian nor Kadikistani national waters, and we truthfully hope the Trivodnian government will not stand in the way and rather profit from it."

The Grand Duchy of Nichtstein can only applaud the audacity of the Democratic Republic of Kadikistan, for through blackmail and disregard for the interests of third parties, they have already managed to secure favourable underwriting terms from the well calculating Telorans for their infrastructural project between Calidia and Rurikgrad. The Grand Duchy is quite surprised that Kadikistan did not even seek to involve Trivodnia in the FEED phase of the project and has let passions run high.

This would be equal to the Grand Duchy constructing a bridge between Aegada and Nichtstein and then telling Serenierre and Lovisa that, unfortunately, their bigger ships cannot really fit through anymore. The Grand Duchy would understand that these two countries might prove somewhat unhappy with such a potential scenario. In fact, because the width of water between Nichtsteiner islands at the narrowest points, as well as between Nichtstein and Aegada, is much smaller than in the case of the Kadikistani bridge span, we'll be following the engineering of the Kadikistani project closely to get good hints and inspiration.

At the earliest convenience of the relevant parties, the Teloran government will dispatch a chartered hydrographic survey vessel, the SS Adelborg to begin a detailed survey of the channel and its bed, to help establish the underlying geology of the straits. We invite the Eiffellandian government to either send experts to join the Adelborg's crew, or their own vessel to co-ordinate in our survey. We also formally invite Kadikistani officials from their embassy to meet with Ministry of Finance officials to begin the initial process of sketching out the financial package to support such a measure, should it prove feasible, and extend an invitation to Trivodnia and Eiffelland - and all other states - to join that meeting.

The Free States of Trivodnia remains unconvinced Kadikistan has the capacity, finance or resources available to complete a road and rail link to Calidia, whether that is in the form of a bridge or a tunnel, and based on the Kadikistani government's most recent statements, can only interpret this as a blackmail attempt to squeeze money and expertise out of the international community.

"We will be as short in our diplomatic response as we are resolved in our actions. The construction of the People's Bridge of Friendship will continue as scheduled and any actions to cease or even stall these efforts will require nothing short of a violation of either our or Calidia's sovereign waters which would mean a declaration of war against the Democratic Republic of Kadikistan and the member States of the Rurikgrad Pact."

We seriously doubt whether the territorial waters of Calidia and Kadikistan border each other. If our doubts are justified, the bridge will definitely cross international waters. Apart from that, blocking the harbours of Northern Trivodnia in this way is a violation of international law. We completely support Trivodnia in this matter.
However, we are also willing to think about and be part of a solution that will satisfy both sides: A land connection between Kadikistan and Calidia, and an unlimited passage of ships to the harbours of Northern Trivodnia.
We would like to charter another hydrographic vessel from either Telora or Trivodnia, at our costs, and we will send over a team of engineers with equipment.

However, if costs are the issue for the Kadikistani government, we think that a frequent ferry service will be a better solution.

The generous offers by the international community to try and help resolve this crisis are most welcome but ultimately unnecessary - Kadikistan has neither the capacity nor ability to deliver the project it is describing and we believe this is a little more than an attempt to pressure concessions out of Trivodnia.

KADIKISTAN'S ECONOMY IS DOING WELL
State administration predicts that the Kadikistani economy will grow by at least 10% next year

Ivar - Comrades, sons and daughters of Kadikistan, your hard work is paying off! In a recent study by the State Planning Committee our nation's finest scientific minds have analysed that the Kadikistani socialist economy will grow with at least 10% next year due to a predicted increase in industrial production, despite the demographic decline that we as a people are facing. The latter, according to State Analysts, will have a minimum of effect on the economical growth due to the fact that the lack of patriotism from some lazy farmers in the North have not been able to fill their yearly quota's for the past five years. A large part of this failure will thus be undone by the lack of mouths to feed, a fact that will not deprive us of our resolve to punish those responsible for their crimes against the People's State and the Party. With a penal expedition being organized by the Militsiya to root out the farmers not worth being called Kadikistani and visionary steps being taken to increase the population as soon as possible a great economical growth is unavoidable if we keep up our enormous industrial growth and productivity. An economic growth of such size would allow for the State to invest in even better housing projects with a separate room for every single Kadikistani! But also many other things such as more advanced equipment for what is already the greatest military in the world, a greater focus on the Kadikistani automobile industry and the many healthcare sectors.

This news was released on State Media after a long line of false articles being published abroad and sometimes trickling into the border regions of our fine nation. Most importantly for the press agency AP which had ties with reactionary Kadikistani's before and likely even facilitated Pelasgian spies operating to undermine our socialist bredren in Serenierre. The latter controversy proving that our Glorious Leader, Marshall Nikolai Leninov, was once again correct when he banned the international press agency from operating within Kadikistan almost twenty years ago in 1940. Nevertheless the international reactionary news conglomerate have spread their lies which were based on the pseudo-scientific research of a hand full of exiles who have completely no knowledge about the inner workings of our centralized economy. The reactionary propaganda was quickly and blindly copied by national news agencies in almost every single country except for Calidia, Cumbria, Milesia, Serenierre, Gouw Marken and the Fatherland. This is why the more thorough results of the study by the State Planing Committee will be distributed to all member parties of the International Association of Marxist-Leninovist Parties to be distributed among the base who will spread the truth to the people of the world. In the name of honesty we must do everything we can to contain the spread of false information.

To whom it may concern.

We would like to reiterate that Journalists are not spies and that all men are innocent until proven guilty. Only a government that is scared of being reported on impartially is scared of foreign press; unless, of course, Kadikistan believes that "To Sphyrodrepano" ought to be banned in Pelasgia.
