Rain sleeted down upon the sides of the grand cathedral, one of the autumnal storms that were so common here in the capital city of Keararzhel. A towering edifice of blue brick, imported at considerable expense centuries ago from the coastal islands, it was a monumental example of the Gothic style’s reach for more interior space and to draw man’s attention up towards God in His Heaven. Five hundred feet tall and as long as it was tall, the Iliz-veur Itron Varia an Montroulez or Cathedral of Our Lady of Montroulez was without a doubt the splendor of the Montroulezan Church. It was only fitting, however, for such a beautiful church to be hidden away by such drear, for it was the requiem Mass of the departed pope being said before the high altar today.

“Toll the Great Bell once!” chanted High Bishop Padrig, head of the Montroulezan Church, clad in black vestments that the uncouth of the modern age may have described as littered with memento mori. A mighty clang rang out as the 25-ton main bell rain out precisely once. The largest church bell in the nation, its casting had quite strained the capabilities of the nation, though manage it they had.

“O God, Who has caused Your servant Pius to be reckoned among those of Pontifical dignity in the Apostolic ministry, grant, we beseech You, that he may rejoice in the everlasting fellowship in Heaven of those whose office they bore awhile on Earth. Through Christ our Lord, this we pray…”

“Amen,” sang out the choir, stretching out the word over more syllables than could be imagined humanly possible as only Catholics could.

“Toll the Great Bell twice!” And twice more the great bell clang out, reverberating down the streets and alleys of the capital.

“We offer unto You, O Lord, our services and oblations in behalf of the soul of Your servant, our Pontiff, beseeching You that they may have a portion of everlasting blessedness, together with the Apostolic prelates whose office they executed. Through Christ our Lord, this we pray…”

“Amen,” sang out the choir once more. Though the Montroulezan Church had been separated from their Tiburan pontiff for some centuries, this had not been by choice, but rather by geography, pirates, and other ills. When contact was re-established, there was joyful unity once again, but the Montroulezan Church remained largely self-governing and retaining her own unique rites.

“Toll the Great Bell thrice!” Three times now the great bronze bell rang out now.

“O Lord, let our prayers ascend unto You, and through this holy Sacrament let the soul of Your servant have eternal joys, that he whom You made Yours by adoption may also by Your command in Your heritage. Through Christ our Lord, this we pray…”

“Amen,” sang out the choir again.

“And may all the choirs of Heaven sing their songs of joy at the entry of another soul into paradise!” finished chanting Padrig for the moment.

A tumultuous symphony of bells was his reply as not merely the Great Bell, but every bell and carillon of the church rang out in imitation of those Heavenly choirs. The effect was somewhat spoiled for outside observers as, in accordance with long standing tradition, every trolley and tram driver within listening distance laid upon their horns in a much less acoustically pleasant accompaniment. Within the brick walls of the cathedral, however, only the bells of the church and the singing of the choir could be heard by the faithful worshippers, much to the relief of their ears.

OOC: Didn't want to break up the election thread with this rather late post; it can also serve as a church service post for any others wanting to show off their national liturgies.
