Pampelasgian Airlines flight PP305 was an ordinary flight, among the thousands of flights that go to Pelasgia from across the world during the height of the northern hemisphere's summer tourism period. It had left the Cymreg capital of Caerdydd slightly less than half a dozen hours ago and was heading for the Theme of Phryxaea, where Pelasgia's capital, Propontis, one of the world's largest and oldest cities, was located. Yet, while most planes flew to Sēlymvria International Airport "Megas Valentios," in Propontis' Sēlymvria suburb, or to other airports of major Pelasgian cities, this specific plane landed in Orestiopolis. Orestiopolis had an airport of its own, along with a base belonging to Pelasgia's Imperial Pelasgian Aviation (Vasilikē Pelasgikē Aeroporia - VPA). This wasn't the only extraordinary detail about this otherwise ordinary flight; almost the entire plane was practically empty; save for twelve Cymreg individuals and the crew of the plane, that is.

Of course, on paper, none of this was true: that plane was full of happy tourists, virtual persons with social security numbers, jobs, identities and other details, who were indistinguishable from actual people, save for the fact that their very existence had been fabricated by Cymreg Intelligence for instances such as these decades ago. The plane itself was supposed to land in Orestiopolis' civilian airport and indeed, the registers and archives of the Imperial Pelasgian Civil Aviation Authority had registered its arrival with a 30 minute delay, along with all of the passengers and their baggage, with two passengers being compensated for a supposed error which meant they'd receive their baggage in a couple of days, as it had been loaded onto a plane headed for Thermē, the Empire's second largest city. Instead of the baggage of all of these 'people,' the plane was carrying some sensitive and well-protected payload: the Franchi LF-57 and EN-F2 prototypes. Its twelve passengers were Director Edward George Bowen, Professor David Kelly, a representative of the Cymreg Treasury and nine security personnel.

As this somewhat extraordinary flight touched down on Pelasgia's ancient soil, on an otherwise empty runway, black luxury cars and a troupe of Pelasgian soldiers waited. In front of the cars were the Empire's Minister of National Defence, Megas Doux Nikolaos Kallergēs, the Pelasgian Minister of the Economy, Grēgorios Sakellaridēs, and a few industrialists and intelligence chiefs whose expertise would be needed for the upcoming meeting. The temperature in Orestiopolis was climbing from the upper 20s into the 30s, just like in most of Pelasgia, with every hour of the morning, while the Pelasgian sun schorched everything and everyone its rays touched as it climbed towards its highest point for the day, with slightly fewer than four hours to do so. Sand and low grass, with wild plants as well as pine and olive trees surrounded the air base, with cultivated fields, olive fields and vineyards surrounding the city, in a typical Long Sea setting. The air base itself was made of cement and metal, with hangas, towers and barbed wire fences surrounding it. Well guarded, by multiple fences, walls, sentries, patrol dogs and vehicles, with extra security for this occasion, it was safe from unwanted eyes. @

The heat was unbearable for both the Professor and the Director , they felt it hit them as soon as they enter Pampelasgian airspace. They originally wore suits and ties but by the time the plane landed Prof Kelly took his tie and jack off then rolled up his shelves, he had to wipe his fore with the towel because sweat ix rolling into his eyes. Director
Bowen equally has hot couldn't afford the luxury of taking off his suit and tie since he was lead diplomatic representative for this meeting.

"You didn't just dragged me away in the middle of the night to torture me with this heat because I leaked state's secrets in the pub?" Prof Kelly asks after throwing back a bottle of water a steward offered him. He is used to being in his workshop grilling new assistants to his workshop and scanning through research papers and diagrams not globe trotting.

"No,you had six hours to read that briefing." Director Bowen answers annoyed.

He spent the whole flight listening to Prof Kelly moaning about the plane's food and how the stewards's skirt were too short, then how air conditioning made it too cold and later on the flight it broke so it made it too hot. If He knew he had to sit next to him, he would have requested to fly on the other flight but he was not given much choice. He was asleep when he had phone call from the Presidency Office telling plans for the meeting had changed and told to bring Prof Kelly and wait for a car. When he asked the reason for sudden changes of plans, they sighted "rising political tension" and "heighten level of "security risk."After the car both of them were drop off to a small runaway on a frozen lake to be flown in a four sitter plane to the capital's airport to be transferred to this one.

Bowen was mostly dripped fed information on the outside world since the J.M.R.C was hidden among the frosted tipped mountains in the north and almost everyone working in it were homed in a gated village. He obviously knew about the June Attacks since it was spread across the papers and the whole centre was put under locked down during it but he had not much of a idea about "political tension." Even though he's been working in the civil service for over three decades first working in the Home Office then gaining a senior role in the Department of Security & Defence then now to his current position, after going though all that he learnt not to buy much attention to politics and just do his job.

The plane's door opened with a hiss letting in fresh air, everyone let a breath of relief and started to move out the plane with few of the security team at each side.

"Hi sweety, looks like you some Celtic meat in yo
ur life." The Treasurer's representative says to one of the stewards while tapping her behind. He was in his early twenty and his cockneys is made up from being the youngest members of the Treasury. Prof Kelly who is behind him when he does this, spanks him across his head with the briefing folder and tells him off.

"Boy you may be the big man with the college dropouts at home but we're on foreign soil and plus you couldn't afford to keep her." The steward give him a thankful smile.

Bowen was first of them to depart the plane and he could only see a few military figures waiting for him thanks to the burning sun shining in his eyes.

People say to never judge a book by its cover; I hope that they're right, Kallergēs thought to himself, seeing the rather dull first impression of the Cymreg delegation. As the brass band welcomed the delegates with a military march, the Pelasgian delegates moved to shake the hands of the men in front of them, exchanging welcomes and greetings. With that out of the way, both delegations were moved to the villa of one of the industrialists from the Pelasgian delegation, right outside Orestiopolis. Built in traditional Pelasgian style, it featured Corinthian pillars and ronate decorations on its exterior, with an elegant, symmetrical garden, full of statues and fountains, surrounding the building. The building itself was rectangular, with an internal courtyard, featuring plants and tables for the guests, on its mosaic-covered floor, surrounded by a collonade, similar to that which made up the front of the first level's exterior. In the shade of cloths and climbing plants, well away from any prying eyes, the delegates were served local delicacies, including appetisers such as Pelasgian salad with feta cheese and olive-bread, a main course of a well cooked stag with baked potatoes and a traditional desert made of honey and almonds. All of this was accompanied by lots of white and red Pelasgian wine, from Phryxaea's best vineyards. After the food, the delegates were finally able to discuss what they needed to discuss over a cup of traditional tea. For their convenience, a projector had been brought next to the smaller tables, to which they had moved. The Minister of Defence was the first to speak.

"So, friends; having enjoyed the generous hospitality of Mr. Vakchaios, who observes the most ancient Pelasgian tradition of treating one's guests as one would treat deities, what do you say we get down to our business?"

Dictator Bowen was happy to talk business since Kallergēs just talked about the byzantine empire for the whole . He waved to one of his security team who then went off to bring in a large briefcase.

"I thought you like to see our most exciting project first." Bowen said, everyone who wasn't essential were kicked out the room with the briefcase entering the room after them. The briefcase was put on on the table for Bowen to unlock by entering the combination to relive an small mental circle box containing a film reel with red letters printed on it.

"Property of Department of Defence & Security unauthorised access will result in military detention ."

Bowen got a key from his top pocket to open the padlock on the circle box, he then handed it over to Prof Kelly. By this time all lights were turned off and a small screen was rolled in by the waiters before they were kicked out.

The project was turned on, the footage was grainy with the screen flicking on and off. It then finally showed 8.5 metered missile on a launchpad with various leads attached to the base, the film then turned to show far away shot of a big white cross painted on a filed.

"We don't have any jets suitable for this kind of testing so we had to use weather balloons and blimps."
Prof Kelly told the room.

The footage went back to the launchpad then the camera started to shake because the missile was being fired the screen went black for a few seconds. When it came back on the camera was following the missile through the skyline which was made up of snowy mountains. The missile seemed to angled it self so it wouldn't hit a mountain side, then the footage went in out out of a radar screen to the missile in the sky, it was able move to the left to avoid blimps that were set up . After few dozen meters increasing going up,it suddenly nosed dived positioning itself to go through the fourteen foot gap between the blimps. After doing that it levelled out to fly straight across the skyline but descending down. The final bit of the footage showed the white cross with the missile coming from the background within thirty seconds the missile hit the ground resulting in a small explosions but it was a few meters short of its intended target.

Lights turned backed on and projector turned off. Prof Kelly turned to the room

"As you can see the bloodhound is still in the finishing process but I believe the final product will be able to travel at 900 MPH, have the range of 80 km and be agile enough to take out any current military aircraft."

OCC every time I hear the line "let's get down to business"

The Minister, like most delegates, was impressed by this new missile system.

"Intriguing. Such a weapon could truly give us an edge in aerial defence. I'm sure Mr. Vakchaios could divert some of his factory's artillery production to producing these machines. I reckon we could gather enough funding for a whole new factory, if your other projects are as good as this one. Exactly how does the missile track planes and avoid obstacles?"

"The missile it self doesn't track an object, we using an radar system to scan an area for possible enemy objects we enter its position off the missile goes but what makes it different from others is that we are feeding it information from our radar on the ground about its environment so it can changed its position to be in line of the object's path. The more harder moves like nose driving we have to control manually." Prof Kelly said

He brought out a diagram from his fodder to show Kallergēs.

You must be registered for see images

Prof Kelly explained
"It's semi active radar homing, we've spent years developing various equipment controlled by this. It's cheaper and easier then having full active radar homing since you need to create radar transceivers for each missile with this you need only to have antennas put in strategic positions to cover an large airspace. Of course the disadvantage is the missile will be aimless if it loses its signals to its mother antenna, we had few accidents sadly missile not launching, the fuse going off mid flight, the worse one was when the radar sent wrong coordinates sending-" Prof Kelly was waffling but Bowen interrupt him realising he was going to blow the deal.

"Yes Professor Kelly we don't need to know how you like your coffee. As you can see gentlemen this probably one of most advance and powerful missile air defence system in the world, of course the Professor points out that there's been a few handicap ups but you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs." Bowen said turning to give Kallergēs a reassuring look.

The Grand Duke understood that new weapons systems tend to have problems when being developped; even outside the military industry, innovation usually needs many tweeks before perfection. When a Pelasgian automobile-aviation industry, Pegasos, created the first jet engine airliner it took them five versions and lots of accidents, with mutliple lawsuits, before perfecting it. That being said, he thought that the Empire could help in perfecting it. He did see, however, that there was no point beating that horse any further.

"I see. We could work together for further tests and developments, if you want to. How long do you assume unit production would take?"

Bowen paused for a moment thinking carefully on what words to use, the truth was each year since he took Director's chair, the budget skunk and he had to shut down at least one project each year or "paused for revaluation" in civil service words.

"The optimist would say about three years. Which will be made up of eight months for creation of final prototype, six months of various testing another year creating and preparing it for the production line. All these steps come with its own unforeseen challenges along with our budget not being ring fenced, it could be cut completed thanks to uncertain political climate back at home. On the question of co-operation I don't have the liberty to make such agreements. " Bowen answered

With reports of Cymreg politics getting more unstable by the day, that last comment seemed terribly prophetic.

"I understand. One could only hope that the political climate at home stays relatively stable, though, and I mean no offense by this, your country does seem to be in turmoil right now. Either way, I'm certain no government would be short-sighted enough to pass on the chance of developping a revolutionary system such as this. Are there any other prototypes you wish to present?"

"In my professional opinion this project could even the playing field thanks to the creation of the jet engine makes the Bofors 40 mm gun useless against the next generation of offensive aircraft. When comes to politics I try my best to distance it from my department it only seems to bring insecurity."
He went forward on his chair and moved closer to Kallergēs and started to speak under his breath.

"Save you the boring internal government procedures but the President is going to steamroll reforms including our yearly budget."

"We do need a firing range for the next part."

Being near one of the Pelasgia's largest military industries and several major military bases, the Mansion was not very far away from a firing range. A prompt, discrete drive back to the nearby Military Aviation base, to the firing range where Airborne troops trained with mortars allowed for the Cymreg delegation's next demonstration.

"So, Director Bowen, the show is yours."

"Great in the sun again."
Prof Kelly moaned

"Shut it Professor."
Bowen snapped.

Both of them were standing by the firing range facing the delegates,Bowen then opened two oak large briefcases.

"Shit you didn't bring that prototype?" Prof Kelly said turning to keep his voice quiet.

"The LF-57 what is wrong with it?" Bowen said irritated he was ready to strangle the Professor on the plane home. He then examined the LF-57 it was barely there, there wasn't an outer covering which left the gun barrel exposed.

"What in the hell is this, it looks nothing like the diagrams." Bowen whispered. They had both turned their backs to the delegates.

"It's a bloody test model we made, if you didn't wake me in the middle of the night and had random men in suits drive me away I would have avoid this mess up."Prof Kelly whispered back.

"It is not my fault I was phoned in middle of the-"Bowen was whispering in till the EN-F1 was a production prototype. Then he got hold of it and turned back to the delegates.

"Yes um sorry about that, here's the EN-F1." Bowen told them. Prof Kelly poked his back and whispered.

"You're not even bloody trained in firearms."
Bowen ignored the comment and started to show off the assault rifle's mechanism and talked through it for the delegates.

"As you can see it is simple to use, I am confident enough that one of your troops right now could use it."Bowen boasted giving a Prof Kelly a wink.

"Perhaps we could give that a try."

The Grand Duke turned to one of the soldiers who were near them.

«Ὁπλίτα, ἔλα ἐδῶ!»
"Hoplite (Private), come here!"

The soldier, clad in a olive drab uniform, with a round helmet, his uniform lacking rank insignia, signifying the lowest of ranks, probably a conscript, ran towards the men and stood in attention, after delivering a Tiburan salute.

«Ὁπλίτης Νικόλαος Ὀψικίου, Ε' Λόχος ΙΣΤ' Μεραρχίας λεξιπτωτιστν, επειθς ναφέρω.»
"Private Nikolaos Opsikiou, V Company of the XVI Airborne Division, reporting for duty."

The Grand Duke then turned to Bowen.

"With you permission, of course..."

"Yes thank you Grand Duke."Bowen said, he give the assault rifle to the Private unloaded and quickly went through it for him with the Grand Duke translating.

"Private Osp-kis, you know what I won't butcher your name, here's the magazine put it in like I showed you."Bowen said the Private soon did. Pointing to a target about eight hundred meter away, he order him to fire it like he was using a sniper rifle. The private went down to firing position and squeezed the trigger, the bullet left with a small burst hitting the target dead on.

"Now put the switch on left side of the trigger up and afterwards fire at the four targets four hundred meters away." Bowen ordered him , doing as he was told the private shot in small controlled bursts at the four targets.

"Good now turn the switch fully up and fire at any target." Bowen ordered this time moving back a bit not knowing the mental state of the troop. The private reloaded and fired blinding at the nearest target, the rifle had bit of a kick back in full auto mod.

"This rifle can happily rival against any other in the market today."

«Σ εχαριστοῦμε, πλίτα. Εσαιλεύθερος.»
"Thank you, Private. You're dismissed."

Kallergēs was certainly impressed with the performance of the EN-F1. It was a versatile weapon, quite revolutionary in its own right. Unlike the Bloodhound, however, which filled a role currently vacant in the His Imperial Majesty's Armed Forces, the EN-F1 came right as the Empire's industries had unveilled the revolutionary II TVIE, an assault rifle intended as the service rifle of the Imperial Armed Forces, along with several contracts for foreign supply already in the works, with thousands upon thousands of Hyperpyra devoted to its development since the late '40s.

As if that wasn't enough, another problem arose; just a few days before the arrival of the Cymreg delegation, the Imperial Ministry of National Defence, in cooperation with the General Staff of Officers of the Imperial Armed Forces had published their roadmap for the development of the Armed Forces in the future decades. Among the most important, immediate goals was the standardisation of cartridges to the 7.62×51mm International Standard, where applicable, to facilitate exports as well as to simplify the logistics of the Empire itself.

Convincing military hierarchy to adopt a new, foreign cartridge for one specific weapon, which the Empire's analysts had recently judged to be inferior to the 7.62×51mm I.S., especially after many prominent officers had been very hardly persuaded to abandon favoured and historic weapons and cartridges, such as the HĒTT 49/56 rifle and the 7.5×54mm Pelasgian cartridge, would be practically impossible, without even considering what an enormous back-hand slap to indigenous industry's efforts to export the II TVIE the adoption of a foreign assault rifle would be, right as the new government was doing its best to caltivate relations with the nation's industrialists and shipping magnates, after the fall of the Junta.

"Mr. Bowen, your rifle is an excellent piece of equipment, your entire team deserves to be congratulated for their work. However, our Empire already has its own assault rifle in production, we even recently agreed to sell several thousand units of it to a nearby nation a few days ago. While I would certainly be very interested in pushing to acquire your rifle, there is no way the rest of the brass and the Empire's politicians would allow me to do so. We are still very interested in the Bloodhound design, however. Are there any other prototypes you wish to present?"

Bowen and Prof Kelly looked at each other for a brief second.

"No Kallergēs may I suggest going over the finer details during drinks or an early lunch?"

Cymreg people certainly have quite a stomach, the Grand Duke thought, as the group was driven back to Mr. Vakchaios' villa for another round of drinks. They were taken to the part of the house's seocnd floor which overlooked the interior gardens, with wine, grapes and cheese served to the delegates.

"I hope you're enjoying the wine, Mr. Bowen."

"Yes I am Grand Duke, I like to say we clearly have demonstrated we are country that can create equipment that can meet future defence needs all the question is now what can kind of investment you are willing to put in?" Bowen said slipping the glass of wine he had four bottles already today he still hadn't felt the effects of the alcohol, he turned to admire the garden view.

"Investing in foreign industry is a double edged sword, when you have industry in the same department. You see, Cymru has produced certain good designs, so we wouldn't want to create large scale competition for ourselves now, would we? That being said, I'm certain the Imperial Government and several industries would be interested in employing the good men and women who came up with designs such as these, or at least set up an industry in Cymru where they could work for us." The Grand Duke replied, hoping that the Cymreg had noticed that Pelasgian tone down their wine with water or vinegar, depending on the region, to avoid drunkness.

"Private investments in arms or the military is a touchy subject within goverment, presonally I think you're creating weapons of war whether it's through the public's purse or some rich industrialists. I mean no disrespect to the fine owner of this villa." Bowen said finishing his glass, he thought it tasted like watered down vinegar but he did not show his dislike of it to the Pelasgians.

"You see the ownership of arms manufacturing is in the state's hands and there is only grams in those hands since the company simply replaces, repairs and store our arms. The boy from the Treasury knows the finer points than me. Bowen said flagging the Treasury representative to come over.
