Sollish Military Commander Hospitalized - Government Blames Communists
AP Wellsmouth 15 Jul. 1954

The acting commander of the military forces of Solway, Gen. Edward Harding, was severely injured in a car crash in central Wellsmouth on the morning of the 15th of July. General Harding, who was on his way to a meeting with the chancellor to adress the threat of communism to the small island nation, reportedly lost control of his car at the corner of Glenn Street and Attington Boulevard, crashing into the walls of a commercial building. Nearby pedestrians observing the scene were quick to aid the General, who was brought to the nearby Saint Mary's Hospital, where he has not yet regained consciousness. Doctors report that it is still uncertain whether General Harding will live.

The General was one of the few popular figures of the current Sollish government, respected both for his bravery in the independence wars and his insistence on a strategy of calm and a, as he termed it, "steady hand" when adressing the growing communist insurgency in Solway. Chief principle of the Generals strategy was "conservation of force", which in the eyes of many has prevented open civil war in the past. This, however, made General Harding a controversial figure in the military itself, where many officers are supposedly desperate to initiate an all-out campaign against the red threat.

According to the Sollish government, police has found evidence that General Hardings car crash was not an accident. "We have reason to believe that a communist terrorist was present at the scene and probably caused the crash, aiming at a high-ranking official and trying to make it look like an accident," the Chief Constabulary of Wellsmouth reported to the press. "Our investigations are ongoing, but we are confident to find and arrest the yet unknown assailant within the next days or even hours."

While General Harding remains hospitalized, Gen. Nelson of Falmouth is taking over the post of commander of the Sollish military. The General is a known hardliner and outspoken critic of General Hardings recent strategy, but also one of his closer friends and personal acquintances. Insiders of the Sollish military speculate that General Falmouth will not make drastic changes to the current military strategy as long as a recovery and return to duty of General Harding is still possible.
