“General, you left this report behind”

Colonel-General Artem Vovk turned to face the young officer, consumed by his own thoughts, he didn’t notice the young mans pained expression. “Lieutenant I’m ve…”

Three shots rang out in short succession. Artem’s world began to fade rapidly, but for an instant he looked into his attackers’ eyes. As he fell to his knees, he had only one thought: I know this man.

“I’m sorry general”

Chaos erupted. In an instant guns were levelled and the young officer was riddled with bullets. Artem was somehow still on his knees but his senses had almost faded to nothing, he felt overwhelming tiredness and the most bitter cold. As his attacker died in front of him there were stirrings of anger and regret, but they were like whispers from a thousand miles away, incomprehensible to his fading mind.

His last sensation was being helped to the ground by many hands.

Garden of the Blessed, Private Residence of the Leader, Iriy

“There is no mistake, Leader. An attempt has been made on Colonel-General Vovk’s life, which now hangs in the balance. This is the third attack.”

Three men, including the speaker, were prostrate in the room before an ornate desk. Several other figures crowded around the edges of the room. Unmoving, eyes respectfully downcast to avoid falling on the man at the desk.

He sat in silence, his expression as concrete. He gave no acknowledgement to the men addressing him. The man kneeling before him continued heedless. “There can be no doubt that a coordinated campaign to disrupt our military plans in the west. Three of our principal commanders in the west are now dead, one clings to life…”

The man at the desk cut the speaker off there “Three dead? You said there were three attacks…?”

The man to the left of the first speaker now spoke “Colonel-General Pavel Romanenko committed suicide shortly after learning of the attack on General Vovk. He told his aides his failure was inexcusable before shooting himself. His death is recorded on CCTV.”

“He made the right choice,” the man in the chair said to no one in particular “but his death must be investigated as thoroughly as the others, no matter how obvious it is he took his own life. If Vovk survives inform him he will be promoted. I will prepare a new decree to re-organize command of the 6th Military District…”
