The company was founded on July 10, 1935 as Buell Aircraft Corporation by Lawrence Buell in Liden. The company focused on designing and building of fighter aircraft. Their first fighters were the XFM-1 Airacuda, a twin-engine fighter to attack bombers, and the P-39 Airacobra. The P-59 Airacomet, the first Guianan jet fighter, and the P-63 Kingcobra, the successor to the P-39. Though none of Buell's fixed wing aircraft were not considered a great success, though both the P-39 and P-63 were adopted by the Guianan Air Force, the company's foray into rotary aircraft was was considered otherwise.

In 1941, Buell hired Arthur M. Young, a talented inventor, to provide expertise for helicopter research and development. It was the foundation for what Buell hoped would be a broader economic base for his company that was not dependent on government contracts. The Buell 30 was their first full-size helicopter (1st flight December 29, 1942 ) and the Buell 47 would become a civilian and military success.

Buell Aircraft, with the success of the UH-1, became Buell Aviation in 1968. Today, Buell Aviation has a close association with Hawker Aeronautics of Mayaland as well as other aviation companies in the European Defence Federation.
