Collecting the Stray
Banja Luka
Free Canton of Crotobaltislavonia
13th of July 2019

The recent actions of the regime in Banja Luka had caused much frustration amongst the Kadikistani nomenklatura. More so because they weren't sure whom to blame more, the Slavonian regime for building relations with enemies of the Union or themselves for turning a blind eye to the periphery for too long. Many found it difficult to grasp why the Slavonian leaders would play such a dangerous game. Unable to understand the logic of their actions from a pragmatic and strategic point of view they failed to consider that it was the idea of independence that drove Banja Luka westwards. For many Kadikistani's the Central Committee had been too weak in the first place by not successfully consolidating Crotobaltislavonia during the first modern post-50s crisis. According to conservative Kadikistani thought this allowed the idea of independence to thrive under the warm mantle of genuine Union friendship. The project of friendship and camaraderie amongst equals was rewarded with betrayal, this time not by some external enemy like General Radek, but by the Marxist-Leninovist regime itself.

At least from the Kadikistani perspective there was an expectation of gratitude coming from the Free Canton. After all besides the obvious ethnic and historical ties the Kadikistani Union and the Democratic Socialist Republic before it had guarded over their perceived Kadiko-Slavonian relatives like a big brother guards his younger sibling. In doing so they had faced off with the West on several occasions, invested heavily in the Crotobaltislavonian economy, helped build their military and purged the regime, military and state apparatus several times in order to preserve the delicate balance between the formerly dominant Farragoists and the radical Otpor League. It took only several months of neglect for all those interventions, the vast resources, the lives sacrificed and much more hardships to be undone. By the time the eyes of Ivar gazed back onto Germania the Farragoists had lost power, Crotobaltislavonia had made military deals with the ideological rival Serenierre, strengthened ties with historical rivals of the Rurikgrad Pact and not in the least started an alliance with the most irresponsible nation left in Germania, the Grand Duchy of Lars. The latter gaining notoriety by being the first and only nation in the region ever to invite Touzen forces in Gallo-Germania.

A traditional response of the Kadikistani Union would be to freeze the financial and economic donations that were being delivered in accordance with the Moravscik Plan. Furthermore All-Union forces currently stationed in Crotobaltislavonia could occupy the industrial areas, tow the heavy equipment back East and show dominance by crippling the treacherous regime economically. Not to mention raising tariffs and reclaiming some military hardware. Politically the country could also be crippled if the Kadikistani forces would storm the jointly build airport, the governmental buildings and take key position in Banja Luka along with the other major cities. If they wanted they would do so along with the Slavonians still loyal to the East. After all 8 months of neglect could not undo the deep bond that war and decades of support had created between the Kadikistani's and a large part of Crotobaltislavonian society.

Ivar deemed it better to try a different approach, one that would not threaten to force Banja Luka into the hands of the Union's enemies. The Crotobaltislavonian government was still Marxist-Leninovist in name, but some of its members had become seduced by Western incentives. Dissident members of the government would be surgically removed during the following weeks and replaced with solid pro-Rurikgrad Farragoists. According to Ivar the Farragoist needed to become the dominant power again in the Slavonian political sphere, people who could remain loyal for more than a few weeks. A charm offensive would be launched simultaneously to remind the people of the deep historical ties between the two nations and the joint struggles that they have endured.

Besides the two Marxist-Leninovist factions several other political parties had been allowed to establish themselves during the Union's preoccupation with their own internal issues. One of those parties, the Twentish Party, was the most vocal in their opposition to Kadikistani military presence in Crotobaltislavonia and support for a rapprochement with the West. Several of their interventions both in the institutions, on the streets and in the media had caused much anger back in Ivar. They dared make statements that called for a withdrawal of all Kadikistani military personnel from Crotobaltislavonia and an end to the Bilateral Alliance between the two. It was clear that the Twentish Party was a danger for the existence of socialism in Crotobaltislavonia. It was considered only reasonable that they were the first ones needed to be neutralized.

'Cut off the head of the snake and the body will die', as an old Azraqi poverb went. Today the Shlebuchya, the All-Union Directorate of External Intelligence, would target Eduard Frei. The latter was the Chairman of the Twentish Party and an anti-Kadikistani strongman allowed to gain prominence in Slavonian politics. Frei had an apartment in Banja Luka due to his political career, but his roots were in a small rural town near the Gunnish border. He would occasionally escape to the countryside whenever he had the chance, clearing his mind from Banja Luka and its many intrigues. Today was such a day as Banja Luka would be consumed by the 7 Days War Victory March that was also taking place in the capitals of the Rurikgrad Pact member-states. Frei had no interest in celebrating the victory of the Rurikgrad Pact and the Farragoist-Otpor coalition, he didn't want to be anywhere near it.

His children already leaving the house several years ago, starting their adult lives, Frei decided to bring his wife along for the trip. Unexpected by the Shlebuchya agents involved in the assassination mission, but without consequence for the mission. The Twentish Party leader usually drove to the small rural village of Mrekt, 11 kilometres south of the Banja Luka city border and today was no different. His home town was too far for a day-trip and Mrekt had the bonus of having a relatively intact forest. All forests closer to Banja Luka were either completely or partially destroyed by one of the many conflicts taking place around the capital the last years, new trees taking their time to grow. Being somewhat of a rally fan he was known to enjoy driving the small dirt-roads at exaggerated speeds. His need for speed being exactly the vice that the Shlebuchya would exploit.

Knowing the exact location were Frei and his wife would go, the pattern not being hard to discover, one agent had been hiding in the area since the day before. He waited for Frei to pull over in his SUV and walk deeper into the beautiful forest, holding hands with his wife like young lovers. By the time the Twentish Party power couple had left sight the agent made stealthy approach towards the vehicle and sabotaged the breaks in a manner that would make it look like poor maintenance when they eventually gave out. Several hours later, hoping to get back to the city by nightfall Eduard Frei and his wife re-embarked their SUV and drove off. The wine they had earlier making the Chairman slightly more daring in the turns. Before the couple left the hills the breaks gave out, the SUV tumbled and crashed into a tree. The Shlebuchya agent used some distant high-ground paired with some binoculars to verify the severity of their wounds and left the area. While his wife was no longer moving, the head stuck in the dashboard, Frei was still clinging on to what little life he had left. But it was of no consequence, there was no way he would crawl over ten kilometres for help and the cellphone reception in the area was non-existent.

The first name would be removed from the list.

Rijekavnik
Crotobaltislavonia
16th of July 2019

Despite the long summer days this time of year nightfall had come to the rural town of Rijekavnik. It was one of the warmer summer evenings so far for the town of only a few thousands inhabitants, approximately 30 kilometres East of Banja Luka. With the coming of the dark a few lights went on across town, though most stayed dimmed as the residents would need their rest for tomorrow's workday. One of the places were the lights remained on was the tavern at the small central square, the only place in town where one could still have a drink at this hour. That's exactly what General Gasper Kriz was doing along with two other members of his staff, Colonel's Ratko Milovic and Marko Kuzmanovic. Kriz was the Crotobaltislavonian Army Chief of Staff, currently stationed in a military base not to far from the impoverished rural town. Along with two of his comrades he was enjoying some rest and recuperation and while his position wouldn't allow him to get nearly as drunk as he wanted the Army Chief would still drink enough to alleviate the pain his career had cost him. The tavern was popular with soldiers stationed in the area, most importantly because it was the only tavern in a 6 kilometre radius, but also because the patrons daughter was a sight to behold. The tavern keeper was always happy to serve army brass, they paid correctly, often had foreign currency, kept it civilized and their very presence kept the lower ranks from becoming animals trying their luck with his lusciously provided daughter.

Officers also had a similar effect on civilians and that was no unnecessary luxury in a town like Rijekavnik. Having a low population and a tradition of farming could not prevent the town from experiencing in their own scale what some would call "big city problem's". The proximity of Rijekavnik to the military base were General Kriz was stationed made the town a target during the 7 Days War. The Burgundian Ducal Air Force, determined in the first hours to strike deep into Crotobaltislavonia and destroy most known static equipment and facilities, received Anti-Air fire coming from Rijekavnik and retaliated. Remaining payloads were dumped over the town, hitting the silos of the state-owned chemical disposal factory on the edge of the town. The chemical waste contaminated around 60% of the town's farmland, rendering the ground of many farmers useless for at least three more generations and only if environmental action would be taken. Farmers who could no longer cultivate their lands had little other choice than to become day-labourers for the remaining farmers which became much hated local barons. So far even the chemical waste facility itself was still too contaminated to start up operations, the company managers agreeing that it would be cheaper to build a new factory elsewhere than decontaminating, rebuilding and paying for all the sick workers. Of course there was also the consequence of the chemical spill on human and wildlife in the area, many of the townspeople already showing various signs of illness in connection to the disaster.

The lack of perspective, health risks and general hardship caused most of the younger generation to flee Rijekavnik, hoping for a better future in one of the bigger cities or even another country. Some of them returned, more scarred than before, others were often never heard from again. The demographics of the town shifted in favour of the elder generations who were often either too proud, too stubborn or too scared to leave and abandon everything they've known. With some of the youth returning from unsuccessful ventures beyond the district borders they brought with them the only escape from reality they managed to find outside of their seemingly cursed town, blud. The deadly drugs has long been present on the Slavonian market, but towns like Rijekavnik seemed the be the ideal breeding grounds for such dangerous escapism. It wouldn't be the first time that the remains of wasted youth were found in the gutter, worse so for the tavern keeper when they managed to stumble inside. Assured that General Kriz and his small entourage would prevent that from happening this night the patron decided to stay open for as long as the officers wanted as a token of gratitude and an incentive for the men to return.

It was well past midnight when only General Kriz and Colonel Milovic were left, Colonel Kuzmanovic and the rest of the lower ranks leaving back to their barracks several hours ago. The two men were having their last round discussing the recent news of Beautancus naval facilities in the Grand Duchy of Lars when the Colonel suddenly became more interested in the patrons daughter than the geopolitical opinions of his superior. The Slavonian Chief of Staff always kept his cards close to his chest concerning his political views, especially in front of politicians and media, but those close to him knew that he was critical of the Kadikistani influence over his country. He was one of the 'Old School' military commanders, gaining a major command before the regime of Raoul Farrago placed itself in the saddle. General Kriz managed to manoeuvre himself to the top of the military in a nation known for its political intrigues and power-shifts, even surviving three Kadikistani-backed purges. More than to any regime he was loyal to his country. Kriz fought with his Kadikistani counterparts when his country was invaded, but when the Northern Enclaves of the Kadikistani Union rebelled, distracting Slavonia's big brother, Kriz saw his chance to cause a rift. The Army Chief of Staff used his influence to make the government sign a military deal with the Serazinist Republic of Serenierre, breaking the Pact of Steel formerly existing between the latter and the Kadikistani Union.

Causing a rapprochement between Crotobalitslavonia and the main ideological rival of Ivar was enough for General Gasper Kriz to earn himself a place on the Kadikistani blacklist. That is why, under the cover of darkness, a Shlebuchya agent dressed as a homeless addict was waiting in the shadows with his eyes fixed on the tavern. As Colonel Milovic mustered his courage and started a clumsy conversation with the patron's daughter General Kriz finished his drink while watching the scene play out before him. His friend doing his very best to be charming, the daughter somewhat uncomfortable and the patron himself almost breaking the glass in his hands out of anger. Having had his little laugh the General stood up, balanced himself with the help of the wall besides him and started walking towards the door, occasionally miss-stepping. Halfway to the door he turned to the tavern keeper, "Wake that hero up at 5 am, tell him I'm expecting him at the base by 5.30", he said with a smile and a wink hoping that such a torment would at least grand the patron some satisfaction.

A cold breeze in the otherwise mild summer evening caused the General to tighten his jacket as he slowly made his way to his car across the street. The Shlebuchya agent slowly approached from the rear saw his chance when Kriz was standing by his car door going through his pockets looking for his car keys. The moment of distraction allowed the dirt covered agent to come up from behind the General with a locally popular butterfly knife in his gloved hand. By the time the intoxicated General heard anything and turned around the first three stab wounds had already been administered, four more would follow. Two of the stabs were pure precision, hitting two vital organs that would assure the General's death, the remaining five we random stabs in the same area to make the attacker look more amateurish. The General's face looked so frighteningly shocked that it would no doubt long be remembered by the anonymous attacker. The Chief fell to the ground unable to retaliate or utter anything else than his own blood. He would bleed out in mere minutes, but that was more time than the agent was afford to spend to clean his tracks.

The weapon was bagged and the agents would leave a trail leading to an abandoned barn several hundred metres further. He had earlier established that the bar was squatted by a local low-life drug addict known as Daz who was shunned even by his fellow addicts. In a matter of a few seconds the agent kneeled down near his second victim of the night and prepared a much too high dose of locally bought liquid blud which he injected with a syringe into his already highly infected arm. By grabbing his stinking blue arm the agent accidentally woke Daz who reacted by screaming in agony if not for the agent responding fast and holding his hand over his mouth. The dose worked fast, Daz's confused and panicky eyebrows relaxing and his eyes slowly closing. The boots were switched, the knife and some of the General's DNA samples were strategically placed on Daz, the General's empty wallet a few metres further with the cash in Daz's pockets and Kriz's fancy watch on his arm. Everything was done with the utmost care. The Shlebuchya agent came back outside the bar he could still see General Kriz on the streets in the distance, no alarm had been raised yet and he could disappear from the hopeless town. The scene would look like a mugging gone bad and that's exactly what the patron would think when he went outside for a cigarette a dozen minutes later after needing a break from watching Colonel Milovic horribly seducing his daughter.

The liquidation of military high commanders such as Gasper Kriz would benefit the younger generation of officers. The latter mostly being trained in or at least by the Kadikistani Union or other members of the Rurikgrad Pact. According to the doctrine of Militarized Socialism, control over the armed forces was paramount to keep Crotobaltislavonia from deviating. Following the Marxist-Leninovist tradition the Farragoists would regain their strength through the military.

Being away from home for so long Vassili Zakranev had become more used to his Shlebuchya codename 'Andrej' than the name his parents gave him. As a sleeper-agent of the All-Union External Intelligence Directorate based in Banja Luka he played a major role in the bloody summer of 2019. The latter saw nearly a dozen high- and medium-ranking Crotobaltislavonian officials of various ethnicities being liquidated for their attempt to steer away their country from the East in favour of the West. The two most notable names that were scrapped from the unofficial Ivar blacklist were none less than the highly influential pro-Villesen General Gasper Kriz and the charismatic pro-Lars Chairman of the Twentish Party, Eduard Frei. The liquidations were done with extreme professionalism, most often making the deaths appear as a tragic accident. When deemed most prudent some eleven in total operations were even staged not only to rob the person of his or her life, but also to destroy their legacy. The staged setting of their death often including socially unacceptable behaviours for people in such positions like drug abuse and prostitution, shaming their name and making it nearly impossible to defend the victims. Besides the previously mentioned nine others were medium or even low-ranking officers and functionaries who were deemed to high of a risk to be left alive including. This included one local cadre member of the Farragoist League with a loose tongue that had become a liability. Most of those nine deaths went unnoticed by media and the public, most deemed unworthy for an article in the newspaper.

Several months had passed since Andrej had received another assignment, not surprisingly since the Shlebuchya wouldn't want to stack up the bodies too quickly and call attention to their operations from internal and external foes. The question of his disciplined waiting and blending being rewarded was subject to interpretation. If Andrej would have been an independent thinker the next name on the Ivar blacklist would have made him question if such a thing would not draw too much attention. The Shlebuchya agent wasn't though and that was precisely why he was assigned to such a function. Andrej followed orders and would carry out this mission with the same professionalism he displayed before. He would devise the plan to assassinate the leader of the Free Canton of Crotobaltislavonia, President Lihi Hodiah. Her attempts to turn the central and highly strategic nation away from Ivar and the Rurikgrad Pact had bore fruit and she remained one of the major obstacles for strengthening the socialist state and returning it to the Eastern fold. Andrej would not only benefit from the already extremely detailed personal file the Directorate had established over the years, he could also rely on infrastructure, finances and a vast network of informants and fellow spooks.

"There is no need to take your clothes off, Miss Kurnakovic.", Andrej said calmly and with a kind smile as he signalled the scarcely dressed local sex worker to sit down and relax on the couch of one of Red Star Hotel's medium suites. The woman was startled as she had used a fake name for years as was common in her line of work. As a high-end escort girl one could not afford to have her career impact or even destroy her personal life, be it by psychopathic stalkers, blackmail, social violence or anything else. "How.. How do you know my real name?", she inquired with clear uncertainty in her otherwise confident voice. Using his deep soothing voice he told the baffled woman that he worked for the Crotobaltislavonian intelligence service, but if that didn't knock her off her feet enough the proposal that followed surely would. Both sat down on semi-luxurious one-person couches set opposite to each other and with a little table separating them. Andrej behaved informal and leaned forward, looking his counterpart straight in the eyes before continuing; "I know you better then you might expect, Miss Kurnakovic. Or may I say Sahja, like your friends do?"

Sahja was her nickname, used only by a closed circle of her friends. Andrej's game was one that combined kindness and intimidation, which he deemed the most likely to help him succeed after thoroughly looking into her psychological report. Sahja came from a rough line of work and knew how to defend herself, snarling at Andrej about how only friends can call her that and that the Shlebuchya agent was no friend was an almost natural reaction from her. For a seasoned reader of people like Andrej this defensiveness only showed that she could be broken. From intimidation back to kindness Andrej offered Sahja a cigarette, lighting both in his mouth before giving one to her. "I want to help you, Miss Kurnakovic.", Andrej said before telling her a small biography about herself, where she came from as a promising student to a streetgirl and eventually a luxury escort, some of the hardships she had to endure and most importantly the three kids she had to raise by herself safe for the occasional intervention of an abusive violent 'father-figure'.

The latter would be Andrej' main point of persuasion. He argued that "I realize that the risk of loosing your children is something that keeps you up at night. What if I can tell you that I can take away not only these, but every worry that you have. Your children, a safe home, money,... a future." Andrej gave Sahja a chance to let the words sink in. Sahja had enough life experience to know that nothing came for free, especially not in Banja Luka. "What do you want for it?", she said still with a clear distrust for the person sitting in front of her. She had put her large trench-coat back on to cover up her red dress which could be confused with lingerie. As Andrej would unfold his intentions Sahja would regularly and subconsciously close up the trench coat to remain as covered as possible. "We understand that our President regularly uses your service. In fact we are aware that she is throwing together a little 'party' this friday."

It was a public secret that President Lihi Hodiah preferred to be intimate with persons of her own sex, but it was a decently kept secret that beyond the regular outward family-life she would indulge in erotic parties. Extensive analysis of the Shlebuchya determined that President Hodiah was most vulnerable during such occasions. To gain a much promising future for herself and her children Sahja was given highly concentrated mercury to poison the Crotobaltislavonian President somewhere during the act. Drinks and food being thoroughly tested the poison would need to be administered internally through an extremely thin transparent paper which needed to be placed on one of the sex toys before use. Since she wouldn't be the only girl around she should be able to carefully do so and after the deed dispose of the paper by flushing it down the toilet where it could quickly disintegrate. Despite Andrej's most convincing denials the chance of Sahja coming into contact with a deadly dose of mercury during the whole process was very likely, but that also mattered very little.

Sahja was a loose end and that is why near the end when the atmosphere had changed from despair to hope, Andrej offered her a drink to toast on their 'mutually beneficial' partnership. Off her regular game, Sahja would accept carelessly and by doing so seal her own fate for a slow working poison was administered. Said poison would stay without symptoms for another four days, but cause massive and irreversible organ failure on the fifth. The biggest liability were the four remaining days. Sahja was monitored every moment of every day and occasionally that would be subtly revealed to her to keep her on her toes and prevent her from straying from the path. Nothing indicated that the operation couldn't continue as planned, the prospect of a future for her children and escape from her reality simply sounding too good. There was no doubt that the Free Canton would once again be shocked on Friday and left with a vacuum ready to be filled.

The Free Canton of Crotobaltislavonia had been notoriously difficult to keep within the fold. Extremely generous economic incentives, mainly through the Moravscik Plan, seemingly only made what was perceived as the All-Union's 'little brother' more greedy. Indirectly certain forces within the country systematically resisted against the integration of the Slavonian economy in that of the Rurikgrad Pact. Defending the nation from a Burgundian invasion during the 7 Days War at a high cost and graciously donating Crotobaltislavonia a new province torn from the now defunct Trivodnian Free State seemed forgotten within the year through a military alliance with Lars. This while Slavonian militias preformed far below expectations, crumbling already in the second day of the conflict. Diplomatically supporting them at every turn, liquidating those who posed a threat, exhaustive reconstruction efforts, a well-oiled propaganda machine,... nothing seemed to wield the expected results.

That is why the orders straight from Ivar, although nervously considered, came as no surprise. The broader sentiment within the Revolutionary Armed Forces Officers Corps considering the soft-approach on Crotobaltislavonia a legacy from the weak Mihajlovic Administration and in dire need for more hawkish change. These people believed that the regime in Banja Luka had been indulged for far too long as it used all the freedom it was granted to turn against its main benefactor. The actual story was more complex, but the military wasn't exactly known as a place for political nuance.

Overseeing his subordinates processing data for intelligence purposes Major Tomislav Granzjev was having another uneventful day before looking up in response to a red light starting to flicker at the special communication devise across the room. The red flicker signalled that a message was coming from the direct line between the Regional HQ and Ivar Central Command. Major Granzjev held his breath a few seconds longer than usual as he walked across the room, several of his subordinates carefully looking up from their computer screen as he walked by. Once the encrypted message was printed the Major wasted no time, folding the paper and marching straight to the office of General Josif Obradovic. The latter was the commanding officer of all All-Union military forces inbedded in Crotobaltislavonia. In his position he had allowed himself certain privileges, illustrated by his luxurious office which never ceased to amaze Major Granzjev. The General accepted the message and saluted the Major before walking back to his office and putting on his reading glasses.

The message had been verified, there was no mistake. Either the Radek episode or the broad media coverage of the Yiddish relocation programs had pushed Ivar too far. It was time to consolidate the enormous investment. In approximately 30 hours, at the stroke of midnight on the 16th of June, the Cvetkovic Doctrine would be enacted. That meant that the All-Union would live up to its promise to protect socialism there where it has been established. Since the 7 Days War the All-Union had no less than 5 divisions within the boundaries of the Free Canton. As part of the Rurikgrad Pact's most western flank these divisions were brought under one regional command as part of the 'Western Anti-Capitalist Shield' (WA-CS). Two of them were Motor Rifle Divisions, the 19th and the 31st. A third was the nearly mythical 6th Tank Division which has fought in nearly all major Kadikistani wars and had the liberation of Amstov as the most recent military success in a long record of achievements. To cover the skies and provide rapid response against aerial attacks the 7th Mixed Aviation Divison had also been a resident of Crotobalitslavonia since the war. They drew much of their glory from their role in crushing the Burgundian ground offensive from above and succesfull counter measures against their aerial incursions. Last was the 3rd Strategic Missile Division with installations serving to deter even those across the Thaumatic.

In 30 hours All-Union forces in collaboration with a trusted section of the Farragoist League would take command over the country. Airports, strategic crossroads, bridges, bases, radio stations, railway stations, industrial parks and other strategic positions such as the recently constructed highway from Lars to the Northern Tiburan Empire will be occupied by All-Union military and their Slavonian collaborators. Public life will come to a halt. On the internet a legion of All-Union based hackers would launch a massive attack on government departments where complete control was not guaranteed. Courtesy of the Shlebuchya operatives a long list of no less than 56,243 individuals of all ages, ethnicities and social class was delivered. These many people often had nothing in common except being deemed undesirable for the new Crotobaltislavonia. Some were indeed staunchly anti-communists, but others may have simply been caught criticizing Marxist-Leninovism in a bar. Many of those names, including some very high ranking military or public figures, would even identify as Marxist-Leninovist, but were deemed unreliable and their loyalties questioned. It was a general purge, doors would be kicked down, brothers forced to turn on each other, families torn apart. Logistically and because forces would be scattered it would be nearly impossible to catch them all in the same night, but that's why the country would be sealed off.

It was expected that the regime change would go without too much resistance. Worst case scenario, reinforcements where standing by in the All-Union corridor. A new government was already formed behind closed doors, ready to proclaim the People's Republic of Crotobaltislavonia.

Goran was a Slavonian, but he hailed from the sliver of Slavonia that was in Elben. He had found work in one of the Gunnish trucking firms that used the new highway to take goods south and then bring goods back. That Goran was Slavonian was seen by his employers as a plus: he spoke one of the main languages in CBS

And now this night, as Goran trucked along, having stopped at one of the truck stops for fuel, the Slavonian knew he was not far from the border. His radio was off; instead he was listening to a cassette of Slavonian pop. Totally unaware of anything besides the road...

Ahead, something caught his eye that instinctively urged him to slow down. There was something in the road ahead, a vehicle.

Crotobaltislavonia
17th of June 2020

While in the more rural parts of Crotobaltislavonia most of the civilians would be clueless to what happened until they woke up and heard the news the next morning, the roaring of tanks, armoured personnel carriers, heavy trucks and other military vehicles kept those who lived in the major cities up all night. City dwellers who dared go outside or even stuck their head outside of a window for a peak were shouted at to go back inside. With some exception due to the help of local collaborators belonging to one of the ethnic minorities, the shouts mainly came from soldiers speaking Kadiko-Slavonian. Many of the natives, especially those with an ear for dialects, quickly determined that that the accent of the soldiers came from the East.

Things like accents were not as easily concealed, despite the thorough efforts to make it seem that All-Union forces were taking on a supporting role at most. For the occassion most of the All-Union military personal were dressed in Crotobaltislavonian uniforms and where possible they would let loyal locals do the talking. Same went for the military vehicles which were often decorated with the announced new flag of the People's Republic of Crotobaltislavonia. The bulk of the forces could also be seen with a red ribbon on their left arms, indicating their allegiance to the Farragoist League. In order to win over local support it was deemed best that the whole operation seemed like an internal one, rather than it being efficiently controlled by Central Command back in Ivar.

Between midnight on the 17th and the first official state broadcast at 8 am there was an almost absolute media blackout. For most of the citizens the internet was shut down and other sources of information such as the television and the radio only broadcasted a short message telling people to remain inside and wait for more information. The average Crotobaltislavonian was used to some uproar and the typical power struggles that defined the nation, but it was clear for most that this time it was different. Checkpoints were constructed with the upmost efficiency at the most vital intersections, bridges and roads while the borders of the nation were closed off from all foreign traffic. The exception being the border with the Kadikistani Union and Polesia. Government and media buildings were stormed by elite forces, often not even needing to afflict casualties on the notoriously demoralized Slavonian guards.

In fact at this stage at least only about a dozen incidents were reported with only about forty casualties on the side of the old regime along with seven All-Union soldiers. The bulk of the casualties were Slavonian officers of various ranks trying to resist detainment. Alongside the government and the judicial system the Crotobaltislavonian military would have to endure heavy purging. Estimates were made that roughly 60% of the Officers Corps would need to be replaced together with at least 10% of the grunts. To fill the upcoming voids in the Officers Corps many military positions would be at least temporarily taken by experienced All-Union officers. Only a minority of the apprehended officers were on active duty at the moment the take-over began. Like thousands of civilians deemed undesirable in the new Crotobaltislavonia they were lifted from their beds.

The old regime was run down in hours, now it was time to convince the public. At 8 pm, local time, the first information would be granted. All-Union forces within Crotobaltislavonia were ready for any kind of response, passive or aggressive and everything in between.

The Border
Northern Tiburan Empire

The border crossing into Crotobaltislavonia was closed. Traffic was backed up for miles in Gunnland as trucks waited for something to happen. On the Empire's side of the border, the guards looked across at their counterparts. Accents meant nothing to them. But the vehicles bearing a flag that was definitely not that of the Free Canton as they knew it gave them pause. Calls were made and pretty soon word from the border was filtering up to higher levels of government in Wyndhaven and Eschenbach.

Meanwhile, the guards noted well in their logs the point at which point traffic had stopped. Those men who had been in Crotobaltislavonia had not been forgotten. Inquiries would have to be made.

They had been waiting for weeks as intelligence was gathered on the ground and via electronic and other surveillence. These men had been flown in secrecy as their jobs and missions were never known to the general public or even most of the military community. The unit detachment was small, a squad from the 5th Special Operations Group, their cover for deployment had already been arranged as they would be jumping into the country under the guise of the aircraft dispatched to retrieve diplomatic staff from Banja Luka making their insertion via a HALO jump from the aircraft.

So here the twelve man sat in the aircraft double checking their gear as they were in the air headed into Crotobaltislavonia. Many viewed it as a third world shithole, income disparity, the instability of several previous governments, so many social and economic issues persisted in the country that couldn't ever even seem to keep the power on inside of its own Capital.

They would join up with elements of the "silent majority" that had chosen to not be so silent anymore, hoping to inspire those still silent to take a stand. A heavy sided conservative population under the far left, the people deserved a taste of freedom and be shown how to fight for it.

"Ten Minutes till drop!" the airman yelled to the squad

They stood up and began making their way to the rear ramp, once there they did one final check of their gear and awaited the jump.

"Five Minutes till drop!" the rear ramp began opening showing the evening sky as it was just past dusk. You could see the anticipation and nerves of the operators, they were ready to do what they had trained for.
The light went green "Go, Go, Go", they began walking off the ramp taking their tumble from 25,000 feet above.
