A nation on tracks

Calva. The Commonwealth Central Government continues its efforts to unite the entire country in a network of rail tracks, particularly the continental provinces. The Ministry of Interior Construction has vowed that by the middle of the decade, all major inland regions shall be connected to the coastal heartland, bringing wealth and opportunity to previously endangered communities.

Minister of Interior Construction Alavarte has announced that the Commonwealth will seek partnerships abroad to stay on track with the ambitious goals. When asked about looming protests by indigenous groups over hunting grounds and settlement being threatened by the plans, he reassured the public that mutually beneficial arrangements would be found.

Coca is the plant of the future

Calva. The Commonwealth Science Fund has given a recommendation to go ahead with plans to authorize coca farming in the continental inland provinces. The plan was first suggested by a panel of economic experts convened by the central government to discuss avenues to improve the livelihoods of the rural population. The wealth gap between the coastal/maritime provinces and the inland has been one of the major sources of contention throughout the last few years. Not few have suggested the chances for electoral success of the incumbent government would be affected by the success of its economic revitalization initiatives.

The Catholic Church in Calva has voiced its concern about the plan. Arch Bishop Hernandez went on the record saying that honest poverty was preferable to riches and sin. Some have also voiced concern that the move would empower criminal syndicates and entrench structural developmental deficits through a layer of drug-colored paint on top of a rotting interior.

The government is planning to start the distribution of equipment, plants and loans to communities that have applied for the Coca Fund by the end of December.

Calvan diplomacy is key to our national economic success

Calva. It has been generally noted that the Calvan Central Government has in recent times started several diplomatic efforts aimed at connecting the Commonwealth better to its neighbors and other countries around the world. The latest proposal to create an Organization of Western States that will serve as a body of discussion for all nations of the western hemisphere, is generally seen as key for aims by Calva to find legitimacy for its Coca-based export business that is meant to elevate tens of thousands of farmers from poorer areas into the middle class. Going further, the central government also began to establish ties to the Far Eastern nation of Tagasago, where the long-reigning president has recently been reelected.

Already, the government of Takasago has proposed an alliance between its country, Sylvania and Calva. While the Foreign Office did not go as far in its initial statement, it expressed its hope to forge closer ties with the government of Takasago and to build a solid foundation upon which to to rest the Commonwealth's activities on the international stage.

The Calvan Central Government is expected to continue to reach out to nations across the globe to build its diplomatic portfolio, with economic success hopefully close to follow.

Sins of a People releases to much acclaim and criticism

Calva. The movie maker only known as 'Rodriguezzz' has released his latest movie Sins of a People to a selection of art house cinemas and on streaming platforms, and already many thousands of Calvans have watched the movie. So what is so special about it?

In Sins of a People, Rodriguezzz explores Calva's often conflicting history of dynamics between its various ethnic groups, particularly Old World settlers and indigenous groups, many of whom are still struggling as poor farmers on the mainland today. The movie is a collage of various short stories that together constitute a larger narrative, a clear analogue to how many diverse groups constitute the Commonwealth itself. There are no obvious villains and heroes, and much real like real life, the movie leaves the viewer with a muddy picture that only makes them ask more questions.

While praised in the cultural scene and among liberal critiques, right-wing and conservative groups have criticized the movie as unfair and besmearching the progress Calvans have made as concerning reconciling with historical injustices. A Calvan National Alliance spokeswoman stated that the movie was "belittling our collective efforts and makes Calvans seek penance in a time when the road ahead looks bright and open for Calvans of all backgrounds." Whatever your opinion on the movie, it will continue to a topic of discussion in the upcoming weeks and months across the nation.

Calva to intensify international science efforts

Calva. After the very regrettable collapse of one of the largest telescopes in the world, the Commonwealth of Calva has offered its territory as a potential site for a new international telescope construction effort. As there are many remote areas in Calva that are far from any civilization, shielded ideally from light pollution as well as electromagnetic interference, the equatorial territories of the Commonwealth would be perfectly suited for such an effort.

The Commonwealth Central Government has emphasized that it strives to lead Calva on a path of neutrality and amicable relationships with all nations. As such, a scientific effort could gather support from various nations even if they were ideologically opposed. "The science and arts are the major pathway for future peaceful cooperation among the peoples of Europe, and Calva would be honoured to play a humble part in this great project", the government emphasized.

The Commonwealth will also try to address science as a field of cooperation in upcoming OWS talks. The Ministry of Education has already offered the pristine forests of the Commonwealth as an ideal destination for field trips for schools from all across Westernesse.

The Provisional Government would be interested in assisting Calva with its upcoming construction efforts, should an international alliance for the creation of a new telescope emerge. It is our responsibility to give back to the international community through works of cooperation after a lifetime of PD shadows looming over the world.

The Commonwealth Central Government thanks the government of Touzen for its interest in our science effort. We hope that other partners will join the Touzen offer and we will coordinate a meeting or agreement between all interested friends of science in short order.

Socialism with Calvan Characteristics?

Calva. The rise of left-wing militancy in the countryside and among the students of the urban areas in recent months has been noted with some concern among security circles. Throughout 2020, the number of incidents involving agitation of farmers and local population in the countryside by left-wing militias has seen a steady rise, making some fear that the 70s, where civil war tore apart the country, could cast a long and frightening shadow.

Particularly in the absence of leadership by a large socialist power, radical socialist groups seem to have increasingly adopted esoteric agendas, incorporating distinctively Calvan characteristics into their ideologies. Various groups either emphasize a national socialism, a socialism that seeks to unite the South Westernesse states or various other cult-like aspects, such as worship of a central leadership figure as a quasi-divine figure.

However, despite their rise in militancy, the Central Government generally does not feel that these groups have the potential to attract mass following anymore. Rather, the radicalism is seen as a response to an increasing lack of support, with remaining followers growing ever more militant. The recent events in Ostmark might lead to a temporary change in this development: The attempt by forces allied to the old, quasi-socialist government to overthrow the transitional regime could embolden socialists across the world to attempt a desperate final stand against the end of their ideology.

Whatever the developments are, Calva is confident that with its mix of effective police control of the countryside, progressive social and economic politics and high transparency of the political progress, it can withstand the tides of demagogy.

FEDERATION OF WESTERNESSE DEPARTMENT OF STATE

The Federation watches intently the goings on in Calva and find's itself worried, first the authorization of coca farming, a plant that can be turned into a narcotic that is illegal within the Federation and now the potential infection of socialism and militant socialists at that. The Federation hopes that the government of Calva will find different ways to increase the wealth of rural farmers and work harder to suppress this worrying rise of socialism; an ideology that imprisons free people and free minds. This letter shall also serve as a notification and a warning to Calvan coca farmers: the importation of coca and the narcotics that can be made from to the Federation is banned. We advise Calvan visitors coming to the Federation to respect our laws as breaking our narcotics laws carry heavy penalties.

The Commonwealth of Calva is committed, in its own way, to defend its democratic institutions and republican way of life. Narcotics law in the Commonwealth differ from laws in the Federation, and visitors and entities with commercial interests in Calva are expected to adhere to local Calvan law while operating within sovereign Commonwealth territory.
