Government condemns Gran Occidentian Imperialism
  • Presidente Pedro Herrera called for the emancipation of Monterrey
  • Gran Occidentia organised with local authorities a referendum to have Monterrey join the People's State
  • Correntines call out the fraud at the referendum and the "Occidentian Takeover"
His excellency, Presidente Pedro Herrera has called out the Gran Occidentian government in regards to their policies of integration of the Free State of Monterrey, the polity proclaimed in the aftermath of the disbandment of the European Forum Mandates.

Monterrey has been described by Correntine pundits as "going through hell" since the fall of the Mandate System, with much of the power being taken over by gangs and crime syndicates, which thrive through the exploitation of the local population and the smuggling of drugs, especially cocaine out of the Free State, mostly to Westernesse through Gran Occidentia, or to Gallo-Germania through Corrientes and San Jose.

The news regarding the referendum in Monterrey which has decided that the Free State is to be disbanded and that the nation would be incorporated in the People's State of Gran Occidentia came as a surprise for many, as the establishment in Callao hoped that a cooperative system between itself and Puerto Angeles would be created so that both nation would work together for the emancipation of Monterrey, before they will manage to go forward together as an independent state.

Most of the criticism comes from the Nationalist Revolutionary Movement, the party in power, which has defined Correntine politics since the revolution in 1985. There have been some calls of support for Gran Occidentia, mostly coming from Corrientes' only integralist party, the National People's Action, which is seen as being on the fringe of the Correntine politics, but the call for a better future for Monterrey has been unanimous around the political axis of the United Republic, from the MNR to the Communist Party. The Correntine politicians are joined by Regiomontano (Monterreyan) NGOs and diaspora organisations, which have demonstrated in Rio Verde, Callao and San Sebastian, calling for the independence of their nation.

"We have never seen the people, nor the government of the People's State of Gran Occidentia as an enemy, even if we had our shares of scuffles in the past. But this is simply too much. Our duty, as administrators of emancipated and developed nation-states is to aid the others, the more unfortunate ones, like our brothers and sisters from Monterrey. The news of the referendum in the Free State, was especially hurtful, as we feel that Puerto Angeles turned its back on Monterrey, and decided to copy a Gallo-Germanian typical policy of conquest and border redrawing. This is simply unacceptable. I have announced that the United Republic will not recognise it. I call our colleagues in Puerto Angeles to revise their behaviour and to return to the table of negotiations so they can work together with us and with the Regiomontano civil society, so that we can build the nation together, as brothers, not as rivals," stated his excellency, Presidente Pedro Herrera.

Corrientes marches for peace in Monterrey
  • Youth wing of the Nationalist Revolutionary Movement organises peace marches in Callao and Cumana
  • Nearly half a million people marched in the Capital and about 3 million in the whole country
  • National mourning announced in the aftermath of the battle of Embarcadero
More than three million people have taken unto the streets of the whole of Corrientes, marching for peace in Monterrey, chanting against Leopoldo Duhalde and the integralist paramilitaries and syndicalist militias, for what in Corrientes has been called the "Rape of Embarcadero". Correntines have marched flying the national tricolour, but also blue-white-blue flags of Monterrey and even blue flags with a white dove, representing peace.

The marches were at first called out by the Youth wing of the Nationalist Revolutionary Movement, who were also organising the ones in Callao and Cumana, but in solidarity with Monterrey, all national parties of Corrientes have come together, with the exception of the integralist People's National Action, which have even issued a statement supporting Duhalde and the authorities of Embarcadero "in their fight against terrorism and communism".

More than 3 million people in Corrientes marched for peace, with most in Callao, over half a million people going from the Plaza Nacional along the Carrera 0, in front of the Gran Occidentian, Josefino and Westernmen Embassies. The marchers in Callao even stopped in front of the Embassy of Monterrey, where the government in exile is headquartered and have lain flowers with messages of condolences and support. In the other cities of Corrientes, 200,000 people marched in San Sebastian and Rio Verde, 150,000 in Cumana and Potobamba and a significant march even took place in the border towns of Naccos and Ciudad de Sipe Sipe, which are right on the border with Monterrey and Gran Occidentia.

The organisers of the protests have also started funds to aid the refugees coming from Monterrey, with the government pledging to prepare refugee centres for about 200,000 people, with 50,000 spots ready for the influx of refugees. Correntine volunteers have travelled to Naccos, turning the small town into the central hub of charity for Monterrey, representing the entry point into Corrientes for refugees, but also the entry point into Monterrey for supplies such as food cans and medicine.

"It is a tragedy what we are witnessing in Monterrey. The battle of Embarcadero has dimmed the light at the end of the tunnel for the Regiomontanos. That light is fueled by hope, so they can do anything they can and show the world how inhumane the occupiers and collaborationists are, but they will never kill hope, and thus that light at the end of the tunnel that represents the hope for a day when Monterrey will be free, peaceful and democratic, will aways exist in the hearts and minds of the Regiomontanos and also of Correntines and other Occidentans. We, stand by our brothers in Monterrey and will aid them as they run away from the war, while also sending them the necessary aid inside their homeland, so as to not witness a humanitarian catastrophe. I have signed this morning a decree that begins a period of national mourning for Monterrey for the next week, with flags flying at half mast, and I will invite all the citizens of the United States, who are solidary with the plight of the Regiomontanos, to visit the Monterrey Embassy here in Callao or contact the youth wing of the Nationalist Revolutionary Movement, so as to donate what they can to aid the people of Monterrey, be it cash, clothes, non-perishable foods, water bottles or medicine. It is truly a tragedy to see one's life uprooted in such a monstrous way, for I remind everyone that we all have a right to live under the sun, we all have hopes and dreams and love and are loved," stated his excellency, President Pedro Herrera Rasgado, in his speech in front of the peace marchers at Plaza Nacional in Callao.

Even with the political chaos in the Scanlaw, much of the oilfields in the Gothic Sea find themselves under Gutnish authority, which has remained thoroughly stable. The Meridian Oil Price has stabilised at EM115 per barrel. In Corrientes, the government's plan to plateau the prices by super-taxing the excess profits companies made during the crisis has been effective, with prices stabilising around an average of 8.7 Quris per litre of gas, and 9.2 Quris per litre of diesel.
ENTERTAINMENT: Telecor is set to premiere the second season of Corrientes, tierra de amor y venganza, the beloved telenovela set in the late 1930s, telling the story of a Thaumantican socialist revolutionary taking refuge in Callao, in preparation for the great Josefino revolution. BREAKING NEWS! TERRORISTS ASSAULT EMBASSY IN CALLAO
  • Monterrey based group assaulted the Embassy of Gran Occidentia in central Callao
  • For the first time since the year of the four coups d'etat, 1984, Callao is turned into a battlefield
  • Responsibility for the attack claimed by indigenist socialist movement not aligned to the Junta

Carrera 0, in central Callao, close to the Plaza Nacional has been transformed into a battlefield as terrorists assaulted the Embassy of Gran Occidentia, massacring their way into the compound. Only with the due diligence, discipline and sense of sacrifice of the Occidentian security forces, which have been reinforced by the DAS when the war started to provide for extra security, has saved the personnel of the embassy, as they managed to escape during the chaos, with only a miracle making sure that there were no civilian deaths.

The attack started in the late morning, close to the noon, as three vans, which were rented from a Rheinbund owned dealership using a fake Correntine ID, drove along Carrera 0. It seems that the attackers stopped in front of the embassy of Monterrey, which currently functions as the headquarters of the National Liberation Junta, the government in exile of Monterrey. The drivers of the vans went out and laid flowers, on top of the ones lain by yesterday's peace marchers and then continued on their way, until they stopped in front of the Gran Occidentian embassy, blocking the traffic on the road, and afterwards getting out of the vans and opening fire.

Initial reports stated that 25 men were in the three vans, but the police, analysing the footage of the street cameras stated that there were 26 actually, with one managing to escape right after the hostages left the building and before the police and the DAS arrived on the scene. A district-wide search for the missing attacker has been launched. Authorities warn citizens to stay away, as he might be armed and is dangerous. A EM10,000 reward has been offered for information leading to his capture.

The security forces were overwhelmed in the initial attack, but managed to form an initial barricade on the ground level, and then retreated to the upper level, attracting the terrorists towards them, as the ambassador, embassy personnel and civilians managed to escape the building and the compound, through the backyard, which led into the yards of 19th century mansions. It has been reported that the terrorists defeated the initial defenders, killing 10 Gran Occidentians and 3 Correntine DAS agents. It is believed that not all were killed in the shootout, but the wounded ones were summarily executed by the terrorists.

Rebuilt, rearmed and much better trained since the infamous year 1984, the DAS responded quickly, followed by the police and even the National Army, as the "Code Black" was issued, which meant a war situation in the centre of the capital, less than a mile from the Plaza Nacional, the Correntine security forces quickly mobilised against the attack and started moving towards the embassy. The first to arrive was the local police, but it seems that they were overwhelmed by the firepower of the terrorists. They were followed by the DAS and finally by the National Army.

The security forces attacked the embassy from three directions, and managed to neutralise the terrorists with no casualties, in what has been described an extremely successful operation. Out of the 25 terrorists inside, 23 have been killed in the shootout, while 2 were captured, being incapacitated by non-lethal wounds. The government congratulated the commanding officer of the operation, DAS Colonel Sebastian Jesus Campos Villa, and the men under his command, and has announced that the 10 Gran Occidentians killed in action will be sent to Puerto Angeles, while the three DAS agents killed will receive a state funeral as heroes of the Estados Unidos.

"It is a shock for us, as Correntines, to see such disgusting and cheap violence take place in our capital, again, after we as a society have been so traumatised by the events from 40 years ago, which nearly destroyed our society and collapsed our nation. Yet at the same time, you cannot but feel proud for our men and women in uniform, who fought so valiantly, and with such discipline, that they managed to defeat the attackers with a small number of casualties, saved the personnel of the embassy, and managed to avoid any civilian casualties right in the very centre of Callao, on one of its busiest roads. I wish to thank them for their service and prompt response," stated his excellency, President Pedro Herrera Rasgado.

OTHER NEWS
WHO WERE THE ATTACKERS?:
It was initially thought that the attackers were guerrillas of the National Liberation Junta, especially because of their war against Gran Occidentia and because the ambassador is a cousin of Enrique Martinez-Roca, the Caudillo of Gran Occidentia. Yet, flyers that were thrown around the embassy seem to point towards a socialist indigenist movement that exists along the valley of the Mandujira River in the Eastern Nevadas in Monterrey. The group called for an end of the "genocide against the native peoples of Occidentia" and for an end of the "imperialist presence in the territory of Monterrey". This afternoon, by decree, President Pedro Herrera Rasgado has announced that the organisation has been put on the list of terrorist organisations.

Junta of National Liberation begins negotiations to end war
  • Campo Hortensia attack severely wounds El Jaguarcito
  • Subcomandante Pablo takes over the Chairmanship of the nationalists
  • Negotiations begin for an end of the war
Campo Hortensia was attacked with a car bomb that was planted in a bus that was used by Correntine volunteers to ferry refugees across the borders. The explosion, which was caused by 250 kilograms of dynamite outright destroyed the headquarters of the National Revolutionary Army, killing a total of 45 people and wounding 82. Fortunately there has been no Correntine victims and very little civilians were affected. Many of the wounded have been shipped across the borders into the emergency clinics of Naccos and the hospital in Ciudad de Sipe Sipe. In a shocking transnational cooperation, especially in this environment, the clinics in the Gran Occidentian city of Cienga de Flores have started receiving some of the wounded. It is believed that this is the first sign that the current negotiations might be the ones that will thoroughly end the war in Monterrey.

The attack severely wounded Diego Andrade Seco, El Jaguarcito, the chairman of the Junta of National Liberation and the commander of the National Revolutionary Army, leaving him unable to take over the responsibilities, and thus was succeeded by Pablo Prats, known as Subcomandante Pablo, as the chairman of the Junta, a position in which he was voted in a teleconference with Junta members, nationalist NGO delegates and local regiomontanero influentials. One of his decisions as Chairman was to delegate the command of the National Revolutionary Army to Subcomandante Fernando, whom Pablo Prats described as the most competent military strategist in whole army.

You must be registered for see images
As the new chairman, Prats has spent most of his first day in conferences with the disparate members of the junta and the nationalist movement but also with Correntine politicians, some say even diplomats from the Federation of Westernesse and San Jose, but also with the press. What surprised many was that the Prats seems to have understood that the clock was ticking against the nationalists and that he went for negotiations and concentrating on building a nation on the lands already liberated, instead of pushing for the continued war against the integralist and trying to take control of the whole Monterrey. Thus, Subcomandante Pablo proclaimed the independence of the Free State of Los Altos, whose flag he presented in a press conference in the evening, showing a blue-white-red tricolour with the slogan "Libertad o Muerte", Liberty or Death, in the middle band.

For some it was a surprise, but for the majority it was seen as the only way to make sure that the efforts of the war and the deaths were not in vain. When they first started this campaign, many nationalists believed that the people will rise up and that integralism would be easily defeated, but in reality it proved that as many people wanted a free Monterrey as many wanted to be a part of Gran Occidentia. For those disappointed in the realities of attrition warfare, it's destructive ways and extremely slow progression, it was clear that the only way to cement what was won was to start a new political project, fully independent of what Monterrey was. Los Altos isn't something new for the nationalists. It is the name used in the first independence war in 1830, in the 2nd, in 1940 and even in some revolts against the Mandate status of the EF in the 1960s. For many, it is a bitter victory, the fact that Los Altos would represent only half of Monterrey, but it still is a victory.

"Negotiations have started between the Junta and Puerto Angeles, to see peace come to this land. I know many are disappointed, as this isn't what they wanted, but subjecting our nation to an attrition warfare was and will not be in my intention, for I will not accept the nightmare scenario of the whole land bomber to shreds, mined to the extent that even in a century's time farmers will still discover new explosives and to see more refugees displaced that population still living in the nation. I know that the current status is half a victory, but we must understand the realities. Los Altos is who we are. Monterrey is a colonial identity that was given to us when we were colonised by the Thaumantican Empire. The time has come to leave behind the old identity that was imposed on us and accept the one that us ourselves have taken upon us when we first declared our independence in 1833. That is why we fly now the banner of the Thirty three! In rememberance to all the efforts our ancestors have done to see us come to this point! To see us achieve our independence. After coming with an agreement with Puerto Angeles, a referendum will take place in the whole territory to see if we as a people accept the results, and with that, the time has come to bury the hatchet," stated Pablo Prats in a press conference.

Monterrey War concludes with Peace Treaty and successful referendum

  • Embarcadero Peace Treaty signed, bringing an end to the Monterrey War
  • Referendum succeeds in legitimising the peace treaty. Creates the Los Altos Free State
  • Pablo Prats becomes the 1st President of Los Altos

The Monterrey War officially comes to an end after a month, with the Monterrey Nationalists, Correntine authorities, Tapenagan administration and the Gran Occidentian authorities signing the Treaty of Embarcadero, which cements the current cease fire, and brings an official end to the state of war between the two groups of late Monterrey. The treaty recognises the division of old Monterrey along the Valley of the Acahay, with Tapenaga gaining the important valley highway, and it's integration into the People State of Gran Occidentia, while in the left hand shores of the valley, the nationalists will form the Free State of Los Altos, forever burying the name of Monterrey, which was seen by both groups as a colonial import forced upon them.

The negotiations of the peace treaty had its tense moments, when President Pedro Herrera Rasgado of Corrientes called for the creation of an international tribunal to condemn the members of the Tapenaga Security Forces which were responsible for the Raping of Embarcadero, but after a series of promises from Gran Occidentia, it has been decided that it is to be seen as an internal issue and thus have the tribunals in Puerto Angeles trial them. The division of the country follows a NE to SW axis, along the Acahay River, and ends in Embarcadero, with the eastern districts of La Candelaria and Pueblo Verde remaining part of Los Altos, while the rest of the city remaining in Tapenaga. The city of Puerto Florida will become the capital of the newly proclaimed state, and the service on the railway connection between Naccos in Corrientes and Cienega de Flores in Gran Occidentia will be restored. At the same time, both Corrientes and Gran Occidentia will invest in restoring the railway service between Puerto Florida and Embarcadero, the only railway in the disputed territory. Callao and Puerto Angeles also agreed to create a common fund to aid the people of Tapenaga and Los Altos avoid a famine.

The treaty was voted on by the citizens of Monterrey, with 85% of the voters supporting it, and 15% being against it, thus cementing the final conclusion of the tragic war taking place in the territory. People in the territories liberated by the nationalists also voted on the constitution of Los Altos and on the presidential elections of their new country. While seen by many as being an authoritarian one, Correntine authorities announced that they recognise the current status quo of Los Altos, becoming the first country to recognise the Free State. The constitution of Los Altos declares in its preamble that the Free State was born out of the people's struggle against colonialism, imperialism and integralism, announcing that it is the successor state of the ephemeral homonymous country that existed in the area during the 1820s wars of independence against the Josefino Empire. The constitution also states that the old nationalist movement is to be reformed into the National Democratic Unity Front, which will be the sole legal party in the nation, stressing on the importance of unity until the country is organised to a level of being functional enough to have a multi-party system. The constitution also states that the defence force of it is the old National Revolutionary Army, which will keep its name and will integrate the old militias which were aligned to it. At the same time, Pablo Prats was elected as the first president of Los Altos, with 95% of the votes.

"The war has come to an end and now it is time to rebuild what has been destroyed and to develop Los Altos, to become a free, developed, prosperous, peaceful and stable nation, a true gem in Occidentia. There is still a lot of work to do and we will toil to provide our citizens with security by annihilating cartel presence in the Free State and any form of terrorism. To the Los Silvanos and the Tupac Yanqui group, I say this: There can be a future! You don't need to fight us! Surrender your weapons and join us in building a great Los Altos, where our children and our children's children will grow up in a safe and peaceful environment. After discussions with our colleagues in Callao, I hereby announce an amnesty to every cartel and nativist member who surrenders to the National Revolutionary Army, and will provide cash rewards for every weapon surrendered. The war is over, and the time has come to rebuild!" stated his excellency, President Pablo Prats in his first public rally after the referendum and the election.

Congress blocked in voting the National Development Fund
  • For the first time in his presidency, Pedro Herrera faces internal dissidence
  • Radical Civic Party and MNR dissidents wish the Federal government should take more responsibility
  • Development of Los Altos seen as a secondary issue
For the first time since his presidency, Pedro Herrera Rasgado faces not only the official opposition, made out of the PRC, the Radical Civic Union, and the National Democratic Party, but also internal dissidents from the MNR, the Nationalist Revolutionary Movement, and its allied party, APRO, the Occidental Popular Revolutionary Alliance. This all stems from the government's inconsistency regarding the National Development Fund, a modification of the budget which was supposed to create a 50 billion Quri fund from which the states of Corrientes would access the necessary capital for the systematization of the barrios, shanty towns created by the demographic explosion of the 70s, 80s and 90s, which was further enhanced by huge migration waves from the Tiburano world into Corrientes and by urbanisation.

Up until recently, the government was planning to delegate the process of systematisation, which would supposedly bring the demolition of shanty towns and inadequate housing units, the building of new roads, infrastructure such as sewage and electricity, and affordable housing, to the states, leaving it mostly to local funding, with the federal budget intervening to aid the less developed states. The initial plan was for the federal government to fund no more than 15 billion Quris, the rest coming from the state budgets, but after the Monterrey War, Presidente Herrera argued that the Free State of Los Altos is in dire need of such a development fund, especially to create a highway, crossing the Nevada Mountains, connecting the coast with the northern lowlands, as the only existing way, the Acahay Valley is under the jurisdiction of Tapenaga.

The opposition and the dissidents have attacked the government for caring more of Los Altos than the Correntine states, some going as far as calling Los Altos a personal project of Presidente Herrera, while others calling it a "privileged 9th state of Corrientes". Discussions have been held at Casa Verde between the representatives of the states, the congress, the government and the presidency. Currently, Presidente Herrera announced that he will raise the limit of federal government funding to 50 billion Quris, which will be given in 5 year period, 10 billion per year. Negotiations still take place, but it seems that the leaders of the Nationalist Revolutionary Movement don't want to budge from the position of developing Los Altos too, while the Radical Civic Union wants to cut it completely off.

"The congress is blocked as it is divided evenly between supports of the project and detractors. It is clear for any of us that it is a necessary projects. Once, suburbs of cities was the place where the middle class used to move to so they can enjoy having a house, a back yard, a garage for their car, now, the suburbs are overflowing and the system is collapsing because the government did nothing while more and more people moved into the cities. I feel that the current status quo is set to function well for a population of 80 million, but now we are reaching 160. It is clear that we need a revamp of it. A renovation, but such a huge projects will be for the generations and it needs the congress, not just a presidential emergency decree. We need to find a compromise for the betterment of our people," stated Vice-President Eva Carita-Cavalos.

ANTI-BANDITRY CAMPAIGN IN LOS ALTOS: President Pablo Prats of Los Altos announced the start of an internal campaign to provide security to the nascent republic, as there are still territories under the lawless rule of the Los Silvanos Cartel and the Tupac Yanqui Revolutionary Movement. The government of the Free State has announced that since it launched the amnesty campaign, about 500 people have laid down their arms and returned into the societal fold. With the start of the anti-banditry campaign, President Prats announced that whomever provides any resistance against the security forces will be excluded from the amnesty campaign.
CORRENTINE CATHOLICS AMBIVALENT AND CONFUSED: The recent scandals and positions of his holiness the Pope has divided the catholic community of Corrientes. Along the coast, in the more liberal areas, many have saluted the Pope as a visionary, stating that it is necessary for the church to understand the modern realities if it wants to remain relevant in this world. In the meantime, in the interior and the selva, there were even protests against the Pope and what they deemed as a temporary lapse of sanity, stating that it is impossible to condone and ignore sin in such a way. The official position of the Correntine Cardinals has been quite ambivalent. They haven't condemned nor commended his holiness, but stated that such changes need to go through a Council for them to have any form of legitimacy.

Governor of Estado de Selva brought to trial in corruption charges
  • The "Selva Investigation" started nearly 5 years ago
  • Nearly 50 employees of the state government and the local ministry of forestry accused
  • Rolando Bienvenida Xirau accused of illegally signing off forest exploitation cessions
The Selva Investigation has become the biggest corruption case in the recent history of Corrientes, with nearly 50 employees of the state government and the local headquarters of the ministry of Forestry accused of influence trafficking and racketeering, creating a cartel which lived off the illegal exploitation of the Republic's Forestry agricultural resources, by signing off cessions of areas which were part of the Naccos National Park, thus making it illegal to have any resource extraction.

From 2008 until 2017, what has been described by the media as the Selva Mafia has been extremely active in working together with local authorities in gaining illegal access to forest resources to organize illegal logging operations, with record levels in 2009 and 2010, when about 70% of the logging in the Estado de Selva coming from illegal operations. The team of federal investigators and prosecutors have shown that not even the national parks have been spared, with a quarter of the Naccos National Park being cut down.

The Federal Anti-Corruption Bureau has started in 2017 what is now seen as the greatest corruption investigation in the history of Corrientes, has subpoenaed more than 1,500 individuals in the local administration of the Estado de Selva and has even cooperated with local authorities from Monterrey, cooperation which took a break when Gran Occidentia announced the referendum to integrate it into the People's State as Tapenaga, but which continued after the war with the representatives of the Free State of Los Altos. Members of the local administration have been accused of racketeering, influence trafficking and corruption, and an organized crime group has been disbanded after many of its members have been sent to prison for 5 to 15 years, with some exceptions, a few going in even for 30, when it was found out that they wanted to use the finances from the illegal logging to create cocaine labs in the Selva. The harsh sentences are a continuation of the zero tolerance policy of Corrientes towards drug trafficking, production and smuggling within the Federal Republic's borders.

The investigation has now centered on Rolando Bienvenida Xirau, the governor of the Estado de Selva, and the only independent governor of the nation. He has been accused for receiving funds from the forestry mafia to campaign and when he won, he paid them back by offering them logging cessions. Dealing with this industry, it has been reported that Bienvenida has managed to amass a wealth of nearly 25 billion EM, making him one of the riches Correntines in history. It is the most important investigation in recent times and for the first time an acting governor being brought to trial.

"It is the biggest investigation and trial in the recent history, slowly starting to become as big as the old General's Trial, after the end of the military dictatorship in 1984. While it is a tragic event that we reach such a a sad state of affairs, it is important that for the first time, an acting governor is brought to trial, pending, of course a vote in the congress to raise his immunity. The recent events show that the fight against corruption in Corrientes has gained a lot of traction and it becomes clear for many that nobody is exempted from respecting the law of the land. It is probably the biggest judicial development in recent history, with a lot of hopes from the people being put on this trial," stated Romina Saavedra, political analyst of El Espectador.

Corrientes continues to be world's largest ethanol producer
  • Governmental policies started in the late 1970s continue to provide results
  • The Proálcool Campaign sees more than 75% of the vehicles functioning with flex-fuel
  • President Herrera sees this as the way out of the oil crisis
Born out of the international isolation brought upon the country in the aftermath of the 1975 military coup which brought in power the Jaime Romero regime, the Proalcool Campaign was started to redesign Correntine vehicles to work on easily and cheaply produced ethanol, as a way to go around the sanctions placed upon the military regime, which brought the United States into a huge fuel crisis, which was much worse than today's crisis.

In what is seen as a country that is governed quite arbitrarily, the Proálcool Campaign and sponsorship program is the one governmental policy which has survived and was functional for nearly 5 decades, with locally produced cars from ENA (Empresa Nacional de Automoviles), but also local assembly works of the Ottawan Plodge, Natalian Hartnett and Engellexic Northern Motor Corporation, have all made specially modified designs on their engines specialised to work on an ethanol based fuel, to reduce the Correntine dependency on the oil markets.

Initial programs have created all-ethanol fuels, but they were not seen as efficient, being seen as extremely low quality and the cars consuming too much for them to be seen as viable, but in time, more and more research was put into it and now, the PetroCor, the national company producing fuel and refining crude oil, is celebrating a full decade since it came with the M15 solution, which has 85% ethanol and 15% traditional fuels, which is seen as one of the best for such biofuels.

The campaign saw a boom in alcohol production allover the country, with sugarcane plantations exploding in the Litoral del Norte State, with towns like Mocoa and Pacoa on the coast becoming nearly mono-industrial because of the expansion of the biofuel industry. For the 5th time in a row, Corrientes is again the world's largest producer of ethanol and in the last year it exported a third of its production, exporting nearly 1.2 billion gallons of ethanol, mounting to about 55% of the world exports.

With decades of governmental promotion of flex-fuel cars, the going for ethanol has become the norm for the mainstream Correntine drivers, with the Ministry of Transport reporting that about 75% of the vehicles in the country use flex-fuel such as M15 or derivates. President Herrera stated that while the 1970s were hurtful for the Correntines, it provided the nation with a necessity to find a way out of the black hole they were finding themselves in and now, their pioneering is shielding the next generation of Correntines from the current oil crisis.

"Energy insecurity stimulates progressive policy. In the 1970s, Corrientes was the black sheep of the international scene because of its monstrous dictatorship and its human rights record. We look back to those days with shame, but at the same time, it is important that we learn from them, for even in the darkest of days, Correntine thinking saved us. The development of the Proálcool program is what saved our industries and our transportation and now, countries who feel smothered by the current policies of the oil producing countries, clearly waging a war of domination against us not blessed... or cursed by the black gold, can look to Corrientes for a way out. We are still not insulated from it and the process of creating the necessary quantity of ethanol to produce M15, is hard, complicated and lengthy, but with it and with the friendship we build with the Federation of Westernesse, I can proudly say that the Correntines have today security, because they learned from the lessons of the past," stated President Herrera.

PetroCor has announced a cooperation plan with companies from Gran Occidentia to expand the world production of M15 and other ethanol based biofuels, promising a rise in world production with 50% by the next year. Even now, the biggest market for Correntine M15 is Tianlong, which has brought more than 80% of the Correntine exports since the war in Himyar started.

KATHARINA MILITARY BASE FORCES A CHANGE IN POLICY:
Initial statements from the government that the United States would remain neutral in the current world events have been shadowed by Tarusan statements regarding the creation of important military bases in the Sankt Katharina Archipelago. The government has stated that while they accept the vote of the Katharinans to become a part of Tarusa, even if they see it as wrong and even frauded, they were hoping that the Empire would remain a decent actor on the international scene and would not raise tensions to such by moving military assets there. As a response, the government stated that it will begin cooperating with CETO, as the continuous military expansion of the Empire, tied with its war in Himyar, hostile economic policies and the territorial takeover of the archipelago shows open hostile intent towards the nations of the western hemisphere too.

Joint Presidential visit to Santa Cruz de Taumantico
  • President Herrera visits Santa Cruz de Taumantico to meet with President Jose Constanza
  • It is the most important visit to Santa Cruz since El Prezidente was hurt, as the heads of three states visit the Josefino Capital
  • President Herrera is joined by Presidents Prats and Obregón of Los Altos and Implaria, respectively
A surprise announcement came this morning from the Casa Azul, the headquarters of the presidency of the United States of Corrientes, stating that President Herrera has welcomed president Pablo Prats of Los Altos, late in the afternoon, and then President Arturo Obregón of Implaria in Callao. After a work dinner between the three, it was announced that the trio left Callao for Santa Cruz de Taumantico, to meet with Presidente Jose Constanza.

It is the first time since the attack and the third time since he's been elected, Pedro Herrera meets with Jose Constanza and now is joined by two other western leaders, making this the most important meeting El Presidente Constanza has since the terrorist attack in Kremlyov which killed the Tarusan tsar and the Natalian president.

The join visit seems to have been planned as part of President Jose Constanza's calls for a joined political, economical and social-cultural alliance of Tiburano Occidental Nations. President Herrera has been a long time supporter of Occidental unity, stressing the importance of democracy in it, something that he shared with president Arturo Obregón of Implaria, from which tensions appeared with the People's State of Gran Occidentia.

The Joint State Visit has reached Santa Cruz in the early hours, Western Gallo-Germanian hours, late night in Correntine hours, and it has been stated that the three presidents visited the hospital where President Jose Constanza has been recovering in. By now, reports stated that the Josefino president is awake and can work from his hospital bed, even if he cannot yet leave it to return to the capital of the Archipelagic Republic, Palmira.

Before leaving to Santa Cruz, President Herrera had a meeting with the MNR Dissidents and President Prats of Los Altos and it has been announced that the recent blockages in the budget and the National Development Fund have been sorted out and the bill will be fully and officially negotiated and voted upon once he returns.

While as of yet no great details have been given from the triple presidential visit in Santa Cruz, it has been reported that President Jose Constanza had a talk with President Herrera, stating the importance of working for the betterment of the Correntine people and thus on the importance of voting the National Development Fund for the systematization of the Barrios and other shanty towns in the suburbs of the great cities of Corrientes.

"Nothing has yet been decided upon, but Presidents Herrera, Prats and Obregón have met with President Jose Constanza, who is still recovering from the attack in Kremlyov. The importance of the creation of a Union of Occidentian Nations is clear to us all, and President Constanza has been adamant on the important of keeping social justice and equity first and foremost in the creation of such a union," stated the spokesperson of the Casa Azul.

President Herrera: "World is marching blindly into a world war"
  • President Herrera condemned the great powers of the world for rising tensions
  • "Global South," to be a victim of sabre rattling in Gallo-Germania and Toyou
  • Herrera was joined by Presidents Prats and Obregón in calling for world peace
  • Corrientes calls for the creation of an organisation of non-aligned states

Just returning from Santa Cruz de Taumantico, in San Jose, President Pedro Herrera Rasgado has announced the beginning of a new foreign policy doctrine of the United State of Corrientes. President Herrera has stated that the world is marching blindly into a world war, citing the explosion of tensions in Himyar, rising oil prices, and the radicalisation of the Gothic Sea Pact on one side and CETO on the other.
You must be registered for see images

"We may not see it, or we might say that it can't be that bad, but the war in Himyar is blocking one of the two main commercial lanes Tianlong uses to directly transport goods between Gallo-Germania and Toyou. If the Pelasgians will close off their straits too, the world as we know it will disappear. Tianlong is the world's greatest and biggest economy, a true workshop of the world, and even if they always provoke it, Gothic Sea Pact nations need it too. If the ties between Tianlong and Gallo-Germania are broken, which is a red line, not only will Gallo-Germania be hit with probably a catastrophic economic crisis, but also with war. Currently no nation nor any alliance can live in autarky and no one can enjoy the current standards of living, if isolated totally from the Tianese manufacturing. I'm not talking about consumer goods only, but rather about microchips and spare parts needed to keep extraction industry and other industrial assembly lines functional. That is why I ask the world leaders to come together and end this madness. Open your eyes and wonder if the people you administer must be pushed into a world war under your watch!" stated president Herrera.

In his speech, the president called out the vulnerabilities of the Global South, which will suffer greatly if the sabre rattling won't stop, even if officially, Corrientes, Nonestica, Dune Sea, Azraq, Central Himyar are neutral nations, they will suffer as much as the countries which are set to become battlefields, because of their dependence on trade and commerce. Because of this, the President called out for the nations of the world to start actively working in reducing the global tensions and bringing about security for a peaceful tomorrow for the next generations. The calls for peace were also issued by the Presidents of Implaria and Los Altos, each from his capital city, Cabo de la Paz and Puerto Florida respectively.

The new foreign policy signed by President Herrera concludes the importance of bilateral treaties within the world, calling for Corrientes to remain not only neutral, but to create a new family of nations, which will work together in keeping the world peace and balance so that any threats of world war can be mitigated. He also issued a request to the Empire of Tarusa and the Holy Frankish Empire to make a goodwill gesture and put in practice their rhetoric, in which they say they are peaceful, by returning to the European Forum, and by keeping a lifeline for peace alive, through continued negotiations and discussions with CETO.

"Sometimes, war is assured when we don't observe it creeping about us. We are just mere seconds from midnight. With the modern weapons, a total war will destroy civilisation as we know it and it is impossible to win it, It will delete nearly a century of progress and development and it will kill millions. I urge everyone to return to the the negotiating table and make their interests understood so they can be talked upon and ensured. We need to keep the peace for the sake of our children and our children's children," stated President Herrera.

For this, the government announced the creation of a new foreign policy initiative, which will be named the Organisation of Non-Aligned Nations, and invited all the countries of the world not formally a part of CETO or the Gothic Sea Pact to join as full members, while also inviting CETO and Gothic Sea Pact nations to join in as observers.

Nationalist Revolutionary Movement Congress to begin today

  • The MNR Congress takes place every year and is seen as the main event where the party is futureproofed
  • Marissa de Herrera seen as a likely candidate to become the chairwoman of the party
  • Social Justice set to become the main tenet of Herrerismo and the MNR
This Thursday afternoon, about 1,500 delegates from all over the United States of Corrientes, plus invitees from friendly political movements in Los Altos, Implaria, San Jose, Auraria and even faraway lands such as Radilo, Tianlong, Rheinbund and Pelasgia are arriving in Callao for the yearly Congress of the Nationalist Revolutionary Movement. With more than 16 million registered members, the MNR is one of the world's biggest political parties. It was founded in 1940, by Pablo Herrera after the end of Caudillo Noboa's military dictatorship, and has become the main Correntine political movement which has militated the most for democracy, becoming the main target of the military regimes that led the country between 1970 and 1985, but also the main vector of the National Revolution which brought forth the current democratic system, 37 years ago. Because of its importance in building the democratic constitutional status quo in Corrientes and its huge popularity, being in power for 42 years out of the 67 years of democratic regime in the past century, the MNR has been described by many as the dominant party of Corrientes and by its critics sometimes as its sole political movement with any real chance of ruling the country.

The Nationalist Revolutionary Movement has historically been seen as an oportunistic party, with its policies always ready to adapt to new circumstances, or as a big tent party, with factions going from conservatism to socialism, but the main elements which have always kept it together has been civic nationalism and social democracy, creating a syncretic position many have called Herrerism, after the influence of the three presidents of the Herrera political dynasty.

The MNR Congresses originally were set to take place every 5 years, in the first phase of Correntine democracy (1940-1970), but after the end of the last military dictatorship, it has become a yearly event, with delegates openly voting on new goals and policies needed to be taken by the party, while also electing its chairman and its executive committee, whose terms are now only one year long. The new generation of MNR politicians, fostered by the election of the 3rd Herrera as a president has shown that the Josefino socialist and progressive ideals are slowly rubbing in on what was in the 1940-1970 period a quite socially conservative party with populist tendencies.

One of the main favourites of the race to become Chairperson of the Party is none other but Corrientes' first lady, Maria Luisa Alvarez de Herrera, known affectionately by many as Marissa de Herrera. She was originally an actress, playing in a series of TeleCor telenovelas in the late 80s and 90s, until she entered politics and built a name for herself in charity work.

What sets this congress apart is that with her as the future potential leader, many expect that what was as of now the slow de facto adoption of social justice and equality policies by the MNR will become a de jure policy and a third tenet for the party: nationalism, democracy and social justice.

"It is time to accelerate the rate in which we build Corrientes and with the world backsliding into authoritarianism and reactionarism, it is time for us to make it clear for the Correntino citizens that we are ready to build the United States as a castle on a hill, ready to serve our citizens, ready to respect them. What me and the progressive faction will be bringing forward in this congress will be the adoption of even more ecological policies, especially by doing even more effort in protecting the Selva, enhancing and expanding the national parks, offering zero tolerance to corruption, as we did in the 80s and 90s to drug cartels, and fighting for social justice, expanding the funding of healthcare and education, especially in the rural areas and the states of the interior, supporting the indigenous communities, offering zero tolerance to any discrimination based on gender, sex, religion, race or ethnic ancestry and offering full equality in the law to every citizens of this great country of ours, even offering marriage and adoption rights to same sex couples," stated Marissa de Herrera in an interview for TeleCor 1.

While more conservative groups from the MNR have called out the what they see as the radical plan for the congress, many have supported the recent historically huge investments in public projects for the systematisation and social improvements of the Barrios of President Pedro Herrera and it is believed that with the victory in Congress in getting the National Development Bill voted, all dissidence within the MNR has disappeared.

OTHER NEWS
THE GREAT SELVA TRIAL BEGINS:
The Congress has voted to raise the immunity of Rolando Bienvenida Xirau, governor of the Selva State, for his corruption and racketeer charges. This is one of the biggest developments in Correntine judicial history as for the first time, an acting governor is arrested and put on trial for corruption and influence trafficking. Governor Rolando Xirau has been accused of fostering the creation of an organised crime syndicate, which was dubbed the Jungle Mafia, or the Selva Mafia, which managed to gain nearly 120 billion Quris from illegal deforestation of the jungle in the north-western areas of Corrientes.
REVOLUTION IN GRAN OCCIDENTIA: The anti-Integralist Revolution in Gran Occidentia has taken many by surprise, especially as the Caudillo chose to resign, opening the way for the creation of a democratic Gran Occidentia. Many Correntines hope that the post-People's State nation to our north can become now a reliable partner in fostering democracy, solidarity and liberty in the continent of Occidentia. With signs of resistance showing from the Integralist Brigadistas, president Pablo Prats of the Free State of Los Altos has put the National Revolutionary Army on high alert, as it is known that Tapenaga is a hotbed of Integralist activity.

Central Callao rocked by terrorist lorry bomb
Equivalent of 1,200kgs of TNT exploded in Plaza Mayor
50,000 evacuated after 123 alert half an hour before the blast
One dead and 44 injured
You must be registered for see images

Saturday morning began with a huge shock in the capital city of Callao, after a lorry bomb exploded in the city centre, right in the heart of the historical town, the Plaza Mayor. The attack was claimed by the Indigenous Socialist Revolutionary Movement, a rebel group which has terrorised the province of Monterrey and later still continues to organise attacks in the Free State of Los Altos. It is not the first time the group attacks Corrientes, with their first attack taking place in June, at the height of the Monterrey War, when they assaulted the Gran Occidentian Embassy in Callao, on Calle 9. The DAS also stated that since then, no less than 15 attempts to attack Corrientes have been foiled, all coming from the group.

At 10:23 this morning, the Police has received an alert after the emergency number 123 has been phoned from a public telephone. The alert just said that a "bomba enorme", a huge bomb will blow up the Plaza Mayor. After the attack on the embassy, the police and the DAS have been on high alert and have started evacuating the block, while also calling in bomb disposal teams. While the evacuation was underway, with nearly 50,000 people evacuated in just a half an hour, by 10:50 it was deemed that it's impossible to defuse it without activating its detonator mechanism, so the police ordered the evacuation of its personnel.

At 10:53, the bomb exploded, much stronger than anticipated by the authorities, creating a 10 meter wide crater where the lorry stood, and shattering windows two blocks around ground zero, an area about 25% larger than what the authorities have evacuated, killing a person and wounding 44 others in the process, either by the shockwave of the blast of by the shattered glass.

The DAS and the Government has put the city of Callao under lockdown for the day, blocking the entry and exit of people from the city, as it searches for other potential car or lorry bombs. The lorry that exploded was parked on one of the boulevards crossing the Plaza Mayor, right in front of the Palacio de la Policia, a historical building that still acted as the central headquarters of the Metropolitan Police. It destroyed it, and heavily damaged the adjacent Archbishop's Palace and the San Jose Cathedral, both being historical buildings from the 18th century. Initial reports state that both will have to be demolished and then rebuilt.

Less than ten minutes after the bombing, the attack has been claimed on twatter by the indigenist terrorists of Monterrey, with their twat being taken down a few minutes later by the moderators and their account terminated. In their statement, they called out Corrientes for the aid it provides to the Free State of Los Altos, which they call a neo-colony, and go as far as to call for the killing of all Criollo people (Occidentians of white Josefino ancestry), stating that native liberation can only be achieved once they "leave the continent".

First Lady Marissa de Herrera has called for the suspension for the day of the MNR congress, and spent the day visiting the Libertadores Hospital, where the injured people were being treated, while also going to meet with the family of 38 year old Rolando Garro, a journalist who tried to get a picture of the lorry right before the blast and was killed by the explosion's blast wave.

President Herrera has called for calm, promising the people that the Police and the DAS are working efficiently in ensuring the safety of Correntine citizens in their own capital. He also had a phone call with President Pablo Prats of the Free State of Los Altos, who as a response for the call has ended the amnesty campaign for the Indigenist rebels, and announces the resumption of the Anti-Banditry Campaign in Los Altos, with the final goal being the disbandment of the group and the bringing of its leaders to justice.

"It has been a shocking development, right as we were believing that the territory of Monterrey would be fast aproaching peace and social concord. Corrientes has been struck again by terrorism coming from a group which calls for indigenism, but goes as far as wishing the death and disappearance of all Criollo people, while also holding high communist ideals, calling for the destruction of all our efforts us and our friends in Los Altos have put in the political nation building process. Such radicalism, and lack of scruples regarding political violence which targets civilians is monstrous and it is clear that the terrorist group needs to be completely destroyed for the Altaño and Correntino citizens to have peace. They first hit us in June, and it shocked many of us as it is the first time the great city of Callao has heard such ruckus since the 80s, and now it seems that with this recent act, they wish to wage war on us. To that, I say this: They will not wage war against the institutions of the state, as they allegedly say, but with their actions, they declared war on the people. And that we will not tolerate, let alone forgive and forget. From this moment on, we will be hard at work and will not stop until all the masterminds behind this attack will either be put behind bars or terminated and whomever has taken up arms joining the group, will be considered an enemy of the United States of Corrientes," stated President Pedro Herrera Rasgado in a press briefing immediately after the attack.

Corrientes gets tens of billions of Euromarks in investments
The Ministry of Economy announced that it signed a huge deal with TSC, one of Tianlong's biggest microtechnology corporation and semiconductor producers, to open up a production facility, which will be situated in Cartagena, on the Valle de Catatungo, close to the Greater Callao Metropolitan Area. The deal signed between the Ministry and TSC amounts to a total of 75 billion EM, which will be invested in a period of 3 years, with a gigantic production facility being built in the outskirts of Cartagenta. It is expected that it will boost the local construction sector after which it will provide the city with hundreds of extremely well paid jobs for the skilled labour it necessitates.

Another economic victory for the Herrera administration is the recent deal with representatives of the Pelasgian Empire, which have just joined the Correntine created Non-Aligned Organisation. In the deal signed at the Casa Verde in Callao, both the United States and the Pelasgian Empire agree to ditch their import tariffs with each other, which will grant Corrientes a boost in its iron ore exports to Pelasgia especially, while it will also bring a boon for motorists as they will see oil prices go down a bit. Besides that, the Pelasgian Empires signed an agreement with the Ministry of Transportation, with will lead to the development of two satellite ports in Callao and Rio Verde (at 13 and 21 million inhabitants, the biggest cities and manufacturing centres of the nation). The Pelasgian investment rises to a total of 8.6 billion EM. The Agreement with Pelasgia also includes a visa waiver for tourism, with Pelasgian citizens being allowed to enter Corrientes for tourism and business for 90 days at a time, and vice versa, and is expected to lead to a rise in Pelasgian tourist in Corrientes, by as much as 300%.

Clean up of Central Callao begins
The clean up operations for after the Plaza Mayor bombing has begun, with the Municipality stating that it needs to be done fast, so that life returns to normal as quickly as possible. To their aid, the Ministry of Defence has agreed to mobilise soldiers from the nearby military bases to help, as the Plan Black has been activated yesterday during the bombing alert. With more than 5,000 soldiers and 3,000 volunteers, the operations to clean up the city centre have begun in earnest.

The government believes that the current toll of 320 wounded will not rise more, as no more were reported, but out of those, 24 are in critical condition. After a 24 hour lockdown, in which the DAS searched the city for any other potential bombs, the city was opened up again, with only the Plaza Mayor still closed off. The Subte (subway) station there remains closed, but trains on the lines going through it are functional, with the exception they don't stop there anymore.

National Revolutionary Army of Los Altos announces greatest operation as of yet
As a response from the bombing two days ago, President Pablo Prats of the Free State of Los Altos has announced the biggest military operation of the Anti-Banditry campaign, with nearly 5,000 soldiers of the National Revolutionary Army, led by Subcomandanta Laura, entering the valley of Rio Mandujira. The main role of the operation is to finally end the sovereignty issues of Los Altos, as the terrorist group known as the Indigenous Socialist Revolutionary Movement and a drug cartel known as Los Silvanos, still hold territory in the valley which is very important for the Free State of Los Altos for connecting the coastal lowlands to the northern ones, through the Nevada Mountains.

The government of Los Altos announced that before its suspension as a consequence of the Callao bombing, the amnesty campaign proved successful, with about 2,300 indigenist militants surrendering their weapons, some even joining the National Revolutionary Army, and about 600 cartel members following suit, pretty much halving the manpower both groups have. President Prats stated that he sees the bombing of Callao as an attempt of Shaya Quichca Paccsi and Yuria Paucar, the two commanders of the indigenist terrorists to end the amnesty campaign, because it was bringing the disbandment of their group without the need for violence.

The Ministry of Defence of the United States of Corrientes announced that two squadrons of Super Condor fighter planes have been moved to Campo Hortensia, in northern Los Altos, to offer air cover for the National Revolutionary Army, which as of yet has no active air force or navy.

Plaza Mayor reopens after clean up operations
After more than a thousand people worked at cleaning the Plaza Mayor after the horrific terrorist attack on the 13th of August, the municipality has officially opened the central square of the city. Eleven days after the attack, the government has reported to rise in the number would casualties, with three dead being the final toll, and 320 wounded now all recovering. The clean up and reparation work has been done by the Construciones Municipales company ,which is owned by the local council, and was aided by the Callao Garrison of the National Army, and by civilian volunteers, at times with nearly 3,500 people working to recreate the square, an effort which his excellency, President Pedro Herrera has described as a "Patriotic revival for the rejuvenation of the United States".

The cleanup operation also encompases repairs to the local subway stations, which have been opened up too, as it seems there has been no structural damage to them, so the Subte will begin to stop again at the Plaza Mayor station. There are also repair works to the Cathedral of San Jose, which had structural damage, but it has been reported that it can be saved with no issue. The main problems are the Police Palace and the Archbishop's Palace, which will have to be fully demolished. The Municipal Council has announced that it will rebuild the buildings from scratch in the same image of the originals.

National Revolutionary Army of Los Altos retakes Lagerenza
As part of the great anti-banditry campaign, President Pablo Prats of the Free State of Los Altos has announced the resumption of hostilities between the National Revolutionary Army and the Socialist Indigenist terror groups and Cartels hiding within the Eastern Nevada mountains. Originally, the campaign was suspended with the government beginning an amnesty campaign, which has seen more than 2,500 indigenist rebels and 1,300 sicarios preferring to surrender their arms, receive financial rewards for it and the promise of no judicial action against their actions in their previous lives, but with the terrorist attack in Callao, President Herrera discussed with President Prats and it has been decided that the Anti-Banditry Campaign must continue.

With nearly a full division under her command, Colonel Laura Mariana Grajales, known to the press as Subcomandata Laura during her days in the Monterrey War as a guerrillero commander, has managed to penetrate the valley of River Madurja, which divides the eastern Nevadas in two along an east-west axis, and flows into the Acahay, which is in Tapenagan territory. The attack started from the west, in an effort to insulate the valley from any chance the terrorists had to take refuge in Tapenaga, especially with the current instability existing in Gran Occidentia.

Military operations around Lagerenza have taken over two weeks, with the National Revolutionary Army overwhelming the indigenist terrorists in a cavalcade attack on the town, with the aid of the Correntine Air Force, which provided air cover. It has been reported that more than 100 terrorists have been killed with about 700 surrendering. The National Revolutionary Army has reported that they lost about 40 soldiers. The victory in Lagerenza has been hailed by President Prats as the biggest and greatest step forward in building the Free State of Los Altos and ensuing the end to banditry, terrorism, narcotrafficking.

Governor of Estado de Selva condemned to 15 years in prison
Big news this Saturday morning from the Federal Tribunal of Callao, after the court has given an initial condemnation of 15 years of imprisonment, as part of the 5 year long "Selva Investigation", to Rolando Bienvenida Xirau, the governor of the Selva State (Estado de Selva). Governor Bienvenida has been accused of conspiring to the looting and plundering of federal and state resources, racketeering, leading an organised crime group and even conspiring to assassinate a series of forestry guards who were patroling in the Selva National Parc.

The Selva Investigation started 5 years ago after more and more reports came out from the Selva State that there is a huge operation of illegal forestry and exploitation of timber resources, many of the highly expensive tropical woods being smuggled outside of Occidentia through Monterrey at that time. The Investigation discovered the exisence of a true Selva Mafia, which was headed by the state governor and employed nearly 1,000 men and women to illegally cut trees from the Selva National Park, smuggle the timber out of the country and even going as far as terrorizing the locals and the federal workers.

As of yet, the 15 year condemnation is only for the racketeering and the creation of an organised crime group, but he might receive more years for smuggling and conspiring against the state. As of yet, the Congress didn't yet vote to raise his imunity, even if it was requested a few weeks ago. Should the Congress not vote it or vote against it, Bienvenida will be allowed to continue his mandate until it finishes or he is suspended. If the Congress votes to raise his immunity, he will be imprisoned.

Materfer launches their hydrogen powered train units
Materfer SA, Occidentia's biggest railroad carriage and locomotive producing company has announced that after extensive testing, the hydrail multiple unit they have worked on since 2013 has finally received green light for mass production. Materfer has a long history in the development of locomotives, carriages, EMUs and DMUs, functioning as a company since the mid 1800s, and has provided for more than 80% of the rolling stock used in Corrientes, and more than half of the one used in San Jose, Frescania and Gran Occidentia.

Initial ideas for a replacement of the diesel units have started in the 1970s, when the ethanol fuel started being phased in for automobiles, but at that time, the government of Corrientes responded with a huge campaign to electrify the railways, and the slow replacement of diesel locomotives with electric ones and DMUs to EMUs, but with total electrification being impossible, especially with the high maintenance associated to it, there have been projects of mixed ethanol fuel engines, but again, the issue of extremely high consumption rate hit. Research in the domain has continued and by the mid 2010s, Materfer has announced that they will work on a hydrogen engine for diesel locomotives.

The first to receive green light is a multiple unit exclusive for passenger use, capable of carrying 70 to 300 passengers, depending on the model, and reaching a top speed of 120 km/h. The Rede Federal de Ferrocarriles SA (RFFSA), the national railway company has announced that it already played an order for 3 units of 300 passengers, 5 of 200, 2 of 150 and 20 of 70.

Telecor sees record high numbers of viewers
The Telecor Network, the old state owned network of TV stations which have been privatised in the early 2000s has announced record levers of viewers from a mix of quality new TV series, political talkshows and probably the most important of all, the Copa de Oro broadcasts.

Telecor is made out of Telecor 1, 2, News, Sports 1 and 2. The company was privatised after a series of corruption scandals in the 1990s, with huge financial losses being reported. With a new updated format, the company managed to become one of Occidentia's biggest, producing high quality telenovelas, such as "Occidentia", "Guerra y Paz", "Yo soy Regina, la Reina" or their biggest hit as of yet, with more than 400 episodes and counting, "San Jose, Tierra de Amor y Venganza". With continuously rising numbers of each, from an average of 3 million viewers per night in the 1990s, yesterday's episode of San Jose, has managed to attract no less than 40 million viewers.

Football is also one of the biggest attractions for Telecor, with no less than 15 million people watching in average the matches from the Copa de Oro on Telecor Sports 1, with numbers going as far as 30 million people tuning in for yesterday's match of Atletico Callao.

CTT (Corporación de Tenencia de Tierras) announces that is in inability to pay its debts

The CCT, the Land Holding Corporation, Corrientes' and Occidentia's largest land holding company has formally announced that it is unable to pay its debts and with this incapacity, bankruptcy will soon follow. The announcement has sent shockwaves on the Correntine market, with the Callao stock market opening on Thursday with an average 2% decrease.

The CCT is a company half owned by the state, half by private investors, which own about 25% of Corrientes' agricultural lands and rents agricultural lots to farmers so they can work the land, even offering machinery for rent. The Corporation was created in 1977 by the Noboa administration to expand the agricultural lands of Corrientes by offering land plots which were previously wild to landless farmers to work. It managed to thus raise about 15% of the Correntine population at that time out of poverty.

The current announcement comes after an internal investigation has discovered that the corporation's Director, Raul Bermúdez, has forged the numbers on each yearly budget report for the past 7 years, to receive a bonus from the state for running the corporation efficiently. The announcement has made the Anti-Corruption Bureau start an investigation on the budgets of the corporation, whose assets have been frozen. This is extremely problematic for many people, because many rural workers in Corrientes depend on the CTT to have a land to work on, and the last week of September is the week the contracts were usually signed for the next year. With the CTT under investigation, it is impossible for it to sign new contract.

The Communist Party of Corrientes has announced a protest in Cumana against the current situation. Amílcar Durán, the chairman of the CPC has condemned the situation: "A corrupt official and a weak state have blocked millions of people from having security over the next year. It is clear for us all that the Herrerist state is a failure. The rural workers need the own the land they work, not a bunch of bureaucrats specialised on white collar crime!". APRO, the Popular Revolutionary Alliance of Occidentia, Corrientes' main social democratic party has announced protests in Callao, Rio Verde and San Sebastian too.

President Herrera has as of yet not been very active, but reports have said that he has met with representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and of the CCT. "It is a stressful situation for many people, but we must be calm. Everything will end up sorted and any corruption will be dealt upon," he quickly stated.

JOURNALIST KILLED IN SELVA STATE:
Romina Saavedra, a rising star of investigative journalism from El Espectador has been killed in a drive by in Ciudad de Sipe Sipe, the capital of the Estado de Selva. Saavedra was leading a team of journalists investigating the relation between the local government and the timber mafia which has terrorised the state and has been under the protection of the local governor, Rolando Bienvenida Xirau. Before they managed to cement their findings, initial discoveries by Saavedra pointed out that besides the illegal smuggling of timber from protected trees, there is a surprisingly prosperous drug economy in the state. The Federal Police Service has started an investigation.

President Herrera announces Agrarian Reform to aid unlanded peasantry
  • Presidential decree to disband the CTT and the state finances to take over its debts
  • Decree states that farmers who rented are to be offered land to own
  • The reform is set to solve the social issues of the CTT scandal
In light of the social crisis which has exploded in the United States of Corrientes after the CTT, the Land Holding Corporation has announced its bankruptcy, President Pedro Herrera has announced that he will sign a decree that will formally disband the CTT and offer the lands to the farmers who rented the agricultural plots in complete and perpetual ownership. In late September, the Land Holding Corporation (CTT) has announced that it is unable to pay its debts and declared its bankruptcy, starting one of the world's greatest agrarian crises, as more than 25 million people were not able to access the lands they used to rent from the corporation for agricultural production, threatening Corrientes and the whole Global South with a spike in foodstuff prices, if not famine itself, with analysts stating that only in Corrientes, there were 70 million people vulnerable because of it.

Social tensions exploded when the National Anti-Corruption Bureau started an investigation of the CTT budgets, which completely blocked any interaction between the late corporation, its land and the farmers which were desperate to work the fields so as to harvest their lands and prepare to sow for the next year, especially as the leader of the Landless Farmer Movement, Amilcar Duran has gone as far as to call for an outright revolt, starting battles between the farmers and the gendarmes in Ayo Ayo and El Tres.

The intervention of the National Guard in the areas of the Gran Sabana has calmed spirits down, together with an initial announcement by vice-president Marissa de Herrera, that the government prepares a plan to sort the plight of the landless farmers and to ensure that such crises are not to take place again. While tensions still run high, a series of visits by the first lady into the affected areas have also been described as extremely successful, as Marissa de Herrera has been seen as one of the best representatives of charitable spirit in the nation, with some going as far as hyperbolising her, presenting her as a link between the rural working underclass and the urban elites. As much as the leaders of the Landless Farmer Movement and the Communist Party have continued their calls for social and political revolution, they have fallen on death ears as Marissa de Herrera charmed her way through the month of October with the landless farmers as the government prepared the necessary reforms to sort the crisis out.

Today, President Pedro Herrera announced the long awaited agrarian reform, signing a decree in which the CTT has been officially disbanded, with the state compensating the private shareholders, which held about 25% of the shares in the corporation, while also taking over the company's debt. As part of the reform, the state will offer the land plots to the families that rented them for 10 years for free, while allowing direct rentals for the rest, with the option to keep them in perpetuity after a total of 10 years of rental have passed. It is expected that about 80% of the land plots which the CCT administered will be given right away, as the majority of the plots were rented by families for an average time of 22 years. The rest will continue to be offered for rentals.

"The time has come to sort the issues of our people and of our land. It is extremely sad to see corruption and mismanagement reach such levels that we are being pushed back two centuries that we have to organise such agrarian reforms, but they are necessary in times like these. The reforms will sort out the landless issues and hopefully we will see a disbandment of the Landless Farmer Movement and the likes, for we are here to serve and protect the people in our administration. To the families that suffered in those 6 weeks, who were caught in the scandals that came out with it, who were scared of what tomorrow might bring, I will say only this: the perpetrators will be punished. We will continue the investigation to see why the CTT failed and any of the administrators, managers or members of the board of directors will pay if they will be discovered to have perpetrated illegal actra of corruption which have set the corporation to fail.

At the same time, I am looking at the likes of Amilcar Duran, APRO and the Communist Party too. Instead of representing the people they supposedly administer and defend, they have sought to cause chaos, destruction and anarchy. For the battles that have taken place between the National Guard and the hooligans in Ayo Ayo and El Tres, an investigation will be started and we will see if it is necessary to accuse anyone of sedition," stated in his speech President Pedro Herrera.

The news have been received by jubilant crowds all-over the nation, which have celebrated the promised reforms.

CONGRESS RAISES XIRAU'S IMMUNITY: The National Congress of the United States of Corrientes has announced that they have voted to raise the immunity of Rolando Bienvenida Xirau, governor of the Selva State, which has been condemned to 15 years of imprisonment for corruption, racketeering and setting up an organised crime group which has specialised in the illegal exploitation of the timber of the Selva its smuggling. It is seen as one of the greatest victories of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau, which has taken the case at first, but needed the approval of the Congress for the incumbent governor to actually do the time he was punished for by the Callao Tribunal.
