Railway disaster on the Selva Mainline. Seventeen wounded, five dead
A great tragedy has hit Estado de Sipe Sipe, as the express train that was travelling from the capital city of Callao to the state's capital of Ciudad de Sipe Sipa has derailed 18 kilometres before the Heredia station, in the middle of the jungle, at the foothills of the Sierra Del Sur. The derailment took place because the train travelled at normal speed over soft track, which was damaged by last night's heavy rains, the heavy weight of the train causing a landslide, destroying the foundations of the track and the train crashed, overturning on the right side.

Initially, it was reported that only the conductors have been killed in the accident, but later reports have updated the list of dead to five, the other three being critically wounded and dying before aid has reached them. A special train from Heredia with doctors and nurses has been set up to provide aid at the crash site and by now has managed to transport the passengers in the aforementioned city. The track between kilometres 22 and 15 before Heredia has been closed off and the local units of the armed forces have been mobilised to aid to the wounded and to aid with the clearing of the debris and the reinforcement of the track.
The Selva Express is the flagship passenger train of the Selva Occidental Railway Company, a private company owned by don Francisco Ocampo, one of the leading industrialists that campaigned for the development of infrastructure in the selva, whose company has gained loans and grants from the state to build the mainline to Ciudad de Sipe Sipe, representing the main backbone of transportation between the lowlands in the jungle with the coast and the pampas.
The monumental construction of the mainline has proved to be much harder than any has expected as the clay soils found in the lowlands made the construction for the foundation of the track extremely hard to build and with the heavy rains encountered in the region, continuous maintenance is required for the track to be kept safe for use. While the Selva Occidental Railway Company has been known to be the main link between the selva lowlands and the pampas, this monopoly did not make it a very profitable investment, as a lot of freight transportation is still done one the Rio Madre de Dios and Rio Patacamaya which allow a maritime connection with the main cities like Callao or Santander or Amarete. At the same time, the line is his by frequent disruptions, with this morning's derailment being the gravest accident as of yet on it.
His Excellency Mateo Restrepo, president of the Republic has announced that he will travel from Callao to Heredia during the day to meet with the victims and he will form a committee whose duty will be to audit the state of the railway track and to check to see if the Selva Occidental Railway Company will be able to open up traffic after the repairs on the sector between kilometres 22 and 15 on the Heredia department, or will there will be many more repairs needed. Don Francisco Ocampo has stated that the company is usually thorough in its safety checks and in the maintenance of the railway and has protested against the rumours of a prolonged closure of the line, stating that it is already had to keep the company not sinking, even without this.
The Selva Express leaves two times a day from Callao towards the Selva, once at 10:00 in the morning and afterwards at 6:00 in the evening, while from Ciudad de Sipe Sipe, it leaves at 9:00 and at 15:00. Travel time between the two cities averages at around 14 hours. As all of the rolling stock of the Selva Occidental Railway Company, it uses Eiffellander imported locomotives and carriages.
OTHER NEWS
Another Scandal in the Congress: Members of the Congress from the National Democratic Party have blocked the session of the Congress with yet another filibustering session of speeches, calling again for the reformation of the Republic and it's centralisation. The session has started at noon and has finished at 3:00 in the morning, with the National Democrats blocking much of the debate on the bills queued for today. The scandal ensued when congressmen from the Nationalist Revolutionary Movement have started calling them out, with only the prompt intervention of the President of the Congress keeping the two sides from becoming too violent verbally and especially physically.
Tango Tour: The Ramon Lacasa Tango Orchestra will tour the Republic, this month, with concerts organised at restaurants Floral, Maido and Central in Callao, but also in the Unidad Park of Aitabamba, El Escondite in Cartagena, and in La Pastelaria in San Pedro.
