We cannot deny our national identity.

By Heinrich ObenausWIEN (Ostmark) - "The Von Wien dynasty, the monarchy, and their rule is part of our traditions" Otto von Koenigstad, an Ostmarkian historian, said in a study on the Koenigreich Ostermark (Kingdom of Ostmark) not long ago. "People cannot choose their national traditions," he added. "They must acknowledge them and then take a stand." In this spirit of searching for national roots and of facing up to historical realities, Ostmarkians have begun to rediscover the military and cultural traditions of the Kingdom of Ostmark, the state that forged Ostmarkian unity and put its stamp on Ostmark's rise for the last six centuries.
For years after the 1959 revolution, liberal governments had placed a taboo on all things related to the monarchy. "Everywhere in Ostmark a growing search for identity is becoming apparent and a growing need to find the historical roots for our present national circumstances," said People's Chancellor Horst Grasser. He said that fears of a revival of the monarchy were without foundation. "The Kingdom of Ostmark as a political factor is far enough behind us to allow us to take stock and draw a balance." he said.
In the post-1959 revolution period, the rejection of that past has led many Ostmarkians to blot out their own history and all that went with it. The shift toward broadening the historic outlook, documented in Mr von Koenigstadt's recent historical biography of Ludwig III, the early 20th century Ostmarkian King, appears aimed at answering the need for more national identification by its own citizens. The younger generation of Ostmarkians, not burdened by hatred for the monarchy, also found itself in an acute identity crisis, a lack of firm ground that resulted in violent generation conflicts in the past deecades. Today many Ostmarkians feel they need to know where they came from and why things stood as they did.
