I decided to make a generic thread for discussions on what to name things. There is currently a lot of blue sea that is just nameless. Additionally, there are seas which have had some discontent in their names. I think we could fix some of those things here and now.

To kick start this thread there are a few considerations worth talking about.

1.) The Long Sea
This sea has existed since NSEurope Classic and was used because we wanted continuity between classic and now. I think that enough time has passed to have this renamed. It’s a lazy and poor name considering how immersive and thoughtful our RP is now. A few others I’ve spoken to as well share this belief. Thus far in RP, I’ve referred to it as the Barbaresk Sea. I’d be open to other ideas though.

2.) The Implarian Ocean
This Ocean has existed also as a carry over from NSEurope Classic and it’s probably time to cut the cord. I don’t have a current suggestion here, but I think it would be a very good idea to name it something based upon either Touzenese of Aurarian explorers.

3.) Divine Sea
What makes this sea so divine? Right now it’s a region that is full of nothing. Maybe we should give this a more appropriate East Asian themed name to correctly attract that type of player there.

4.) Unnamed Sea (South of Natalia)
This area could use a name, and I highly advocate for something Aurarian or Engellexic.

5.) Unnamed Sea/Ocean (North)
I think it’s time to name for the far northern sea/ocean. North of the Anti-State there is the Yurmana Sea. I think that sets a bit of an idea that the geographical features cut off the parts of the north and therefore at the very least north of Pohjanmaa, I’d campaign for the Tavastian Sea, a term I believe an old Finnish player used once.

6.) Unnamed Sea (North of Sylvania)
I think a good Engellexic term ought to be employed here.

7.) Unnamed near West Østveg
There is a bay there where the current map meets Nidaros (soon to be renamed as seen in the map thread). Perhaps calling it something like the Bay of Freyja or the Bay of Embla.

8.) Unnamed South of Mazidia

Perhaps another Aurarian inspired name?

I have long disliked and complained of Classic names on the map, so yes, come on guys!

This was requested, IIRC, by the player of Xinhai/Reikoku (I might be wrong here, possibly another, greened, player).

I'd prefer an Engellexic name. I was intending to name it back when Thaumantica was added to the map, but lacked an original name. I'll get back with a proposal.

I actually really like these names and think they have a long enough pedigree that they're worth maintaining. Id like to come up with a good etymology for Implarian though.

Agree this could be better. Maybe Jade / Emerald Sea that sounds suitably Orientalist but could also have a natural explanation (e.g. algae)

Just a drive by opinion before i come back to this. I think the Long Sea should remain. it is so ingrained in our RP that its probably too late to change it. I like it.

I would argue given that the Implarian, depending on which of the Westerners finally made it 'back' to the Eternal Empire region/Far East, could have initially called it 'Imperial Ocean' and that got transmogrified, into Implarian. No real opinion on any of the others, to be honest, given they're the foray of other players or near other players.

If we do as I suggested and want to keep the Long Sea, we could inversely make it that it's the name that Touyounese explorers applied to the sea themselves on sight of dragonheaded viking boats or the like and it was originally called the 'Long' (Dragon) Sea, but mutated into Long Sea as in 'long distance'. Just a thought.

I like the Long Sea, not just because it has a history, but also because the name seems very appropriate. Not so certain about the Implarian, will have to think more about that.

Progress thus far...

1.) A consensus seems to have been built around Long Sea much to my dismay. I still find it uncreative and unexplainable as far as our RP world building goes. Although Warr gets points for trying.

2.) Seems like people are ok with changing the Implarian. As such, I think it would be good to start thinking about the change, and how history should view it.

3.) Changing the Divine Sea to Jade Sea or Emerald Sea has been suggested. I’d be quite ok with this.

5.) I’m going to go forward with calling the Sea north of Pohjanmaa the Tavastian Sea then.

7.) Thus far the only suggestions are my own with Bay of Freyja and Bay of Embla. I don’t love these yet, and may revisit them.

Jade or Emerald Sea feels equally as unoriginal as the Divine Sea. The only benefit of such a change, I feel, is that there might be a possibility of freighters picking up takeaway food as they pass through it.

The Sea South of Natalia was at the beginning the Clarencian, when SoCRER was close by, but afterwards I called it Midday Sea (Midday representing the south), but if people don't like it like that, it could be also called the Ndarma Sea, which would mean the Golden sea in Shona.

The problem I have with Midday Sea is that it’s a perceptive thing. When colonists and northern folk go south, I’m assuming the sun is now north at Midday? Thus rather messing with the idea, unless the concept continues beyond the reality of the location?

Ndarma is nice, but perhaps it would be good to Angloify it? Somehow make the same sound? Maybe Nadarma? Another idea I had was utilizing the Southern Cross... Crucis Sea or something, but that’s not nearly as unique.

Yeah, I thought about it as meaning north in the southern hemisphere. Rather than Nadarma as an Anglification of Ndarma, I would go either with Indarma, Indala, Darman or something else. I am open to suggestions. I don't know what to say Southern Cross wise, I know that its a stellar formation (I forgot the right term at the moment), but I think Engells would avoid using cross terminology.

The Anglicisations I came up with are based on what I saw in the names of Shona settlements in Zimbabwe during the colonial rule and how they were Anglicised.

Which of the three do you prefer? I think I like Indala best, but Indarma good too. Darman I felt was too far a departure... and felt like a more straight up Western name.... but maybe that’s good? Not sure.

I also like the Long Sea. Its canon and story are a bit too interwoven and frankly, its a good name. However, I agree there can be changes elsewhere.
