Pietro Sala (Pietro Hall)

The President of Genoliari Santino Andolini had put his campaigning on halt for the time being. This was due to the much anticipated foreign visit from the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Batavia, Arjan van Vliet. President Andolini was very meticulous when it came to these summits. Everything had to be placed in its own spot and everyone in bis administration meeting said envoy would have to be on their best behavior. Pietro Hall, a luxurious and old monumental edifice was the perfect spot for the meeting. In the hall's entrance was a long red carpet with flags of Genoliari ligned down the path on the right, and flags of Batavia on the left. Service men and body guards monitored the premise closely. All there was to do now is wait for the motorcad sent out to the Verdiccio Aeroporto Internazionale where van Vliet would be landing.

The President and the Foreign Relations Ministry stood tall on the foot of the building while photographers and journalists quickly took interest and gathered.

was hands down considered the most tactical and clever politician in Batavia and perhaps one of the most sly in the world as well. What kind of man could write on his CV that he had served as Foreign Minister for one of the most notorious communist regimes the world had ever seen and then return from a mysterious absence abroad to become Foreign Minister of the newly democratised country? Surely only he could say so.

Leading a very private life, Van Vliet was known for always remaining calm during cabinet meetings and state vists abroad. This trip would be no different, however on his near 15 hour flight to the Italian island he couldn't help but wonder why Genoliari, a small country and very far from Batavia's sphere of usual affairs, would posess such an interest in Batavia, a country that had never once sent an official of any level. He filed his thoughts away for the time being and enjoyed the welcoming ceremony.

When they were finally settled for their first meeting, Arjan van Vliet addressed his most gracious hosts in German, hoping that they would speak the common diplomatic language and have no need for interpreters.

'The greeting that I and my government have been given is truly welcoming and exceptional. However I must confess, gentlemen, that I have little knowledge as to why Genoliari would have such an interest in my country. At the moment we have very little to invest, but nonetheless we are always looking for more friends and trading partners.'

The President was happy to see Van Vliet so comfortable in Genoliari. The sunshine helped the situation very well. The President leaned in to the foreign minister in order to answer his question. Andolini spoke German, which he was afraid would be a little rusty.

"I thought a question such as this one would come up eventually. May I say, you're a straight-to-the-point type of man, that is very respectable. Genoliari's interest in Batavia is much more to us than being a simple photo-op for those vultures outside. You have risen from times of desperation, let's face it, and are now a progressing democracy. This is highly unexpected coming from one of the more mysterious regimes in the world. My ministers agree that our investments from Genoliari could very well help push your nation even further on the path it has been going on so far by your current administration. We are not one of the wealthiest countries either - by any means. But with strong ties, I believe we can overcome any obstacle. In trade, cooperative partnerships etc."
