Cardinal Hemminsen nodded and smiled benignly at the Altaic cardinal and took great heart from the outward support for the Altaics from Cardinal Accolti. The daily existence of the One True Faith was clearly a tough call in the principality and he felt a great deal of sympathy and warmness of heart for their plight. On politics over the nascent Zamoscan despotate, as it chose to title itself, the cardinal had no interest as long as the Tiburan faithful were protected and allowed freedom to openly practice and demonstrate the faith. In that sense, the responsibility was on the Talemantine-backed regime to exact this. The Talemantine Orthodox themselves, he had a significant respect for. Their traditions, practice and glorious architectural masterpieces. But in faith, whilst he respected them, they were clearly misguided and errant, but he was tolerant nonetheless.

The other Danish cardinal, Bisgaard, was a thorough ultra-montane. He did not trust the Zamoscan-Talemantine duopolistic carve-up one inch. They had demonstated a carte blanche intolerance and arrogance over Orthodoxy and he was unnerved and would not budge an inch in his opposition to them. He had no crystal ball, but he believed that the future lives of Tiburan catholics in that hell-hole of Talemantine expansionism were under threat. Cast in a mould of unavowed and stubborn ultra-conservatism, this Danish man of the Almighty would be leading the calls for and firmly planting the glorious banner of Holy War, launching a Crusade to smite the unholy Talemantines and throw the lot out sending the scroundrels, tails between their legs, back to whence they came. His beloved church came before everything and absolutely nothing should stand in the way of it. The Talemantines and their teat-sucking marionette in Zamosk were sly, if somewhat stupid, and would do anything to double-cross and preserve their existance. Rotten to the core.

The physically huge Great Danes hurriedly conferenced between themselves in hushed whispers. To outsiders, it was all glottal stops and flat guttural sounds, but this was a beautiful language of a somewhat proud and individualistic race. Bisgaard, suspicious of outside observers, cast a beady eye over the other cardinals, but quickly realised that few others knew their tongue.

Hemmingsen raised his right hand, index finger pointed upwards, to indicate his wish to speak. Perhaps more nuanced than his colleague, he was chosen as the primary spokesperson.

"Upon hearing of the dire straits experienced by the Zamoskan faithful, we suggest that certain alterations in archdiocescan boundaries be made. It would be of great purchase if the current Zamosca be brought within a new archdiocese linking it with Altai with an archbishop based in the principality. I believe that this would bring great confidence to those faithful marooned in the Despotate and assured continuance for the Tiburan faith".

He pursed his lips before expressing a dilemma that had been been discussed in the Danish Tiburan Church for some time. Now was the opportunity to express this before all the fellow cardinals.

"My kingdom has a flock of around twenty percent of the Great Danish peoples, nineteen million at the last estimate. It is apparent to us that three cardinals, and only two cardinal electors, is insufficient to effectively represent such a huge number of people. It is our sincere belief that, to put it bluntly, that we need more greater ecclesiastical representation commensurate with the numbers of Danish Tiburans. It is a huge and taxing effort to represent such a number with only the official strata we have and a strained church hierarchy, from top to bottom. New archdioceses within Danmark and the appropriate increase of ecclesiastical presence is a dire requirement".

Hemmingsen cast his eyes upwards to the ornately crafted ceiling and drew a deep breath. Now this was out of the way, the weighty business of selecting the pontiff was upon them. A momentous event indeed.

Rochambeau was silent. There were times when he heartily disliked the Conclave. He himself was certainly uneasy about the unholy marriage to Cardinal Manning but he had made up his mind that if Manning wanted it he was going to want it too. He looked away from the conversing Cardinals and looked across the chapel absently. He observed the detail along the walls, the frescoes, and prayed privately that all may go well with the ballots and a resentment arose in him against the Nicosians, the Eiffellandians – those peoples who were so confident to declare their support of his people but did so little to defend the realm of God’s anointed King, and now he must recognise that his interests are tied to those of that odious Cardinal Manning.

Rather against his usual form, Manning had decided not to offer any rebuke at not being taken seriously by the other Cardinals or a long lecture on the harm that had been done. He thought himself wise on that, as there was opportunity yet to rectify the damage taking place. Instead he stayed silent, and when the Danish spoke he afforded them all the respect that would have been shown of a Cardinal sincerely interested in the Danish concerns, well, he was half interested at least. It became quite clear to Manning and Rochambeau that the ballots will be done soon. As ambitious, or determined, Cardinals they needed to court a little number. Cardinal Manning, had originally contemplated putting the Engellexic lot behind a conservative Cardinal of Wiese but he had to think again, and with this his attention turned towards Cardinal Hemminsen.

The Danish had their own determination for improvement. The Danish Cardinal’s character had aroused Manning’s curiosity. As many of the Cardinals went to cast their votes, the Engellexic Cardinals advanced on the Danish. Your Eminence, may I have a word? Manning asked, being sure to extend his smile to the other Danish Cardinal. I don’t believe I need to warn you on what consequence we, he said acknowledging the other Cardinal too, may have to address should they go ahead with their folly, but I hope we may find an avenue to overcome our dilemma.

Your dilemma is not unique to yourselves, the imbalance is far greater in Engellex, and as the Capitoline owes so much of its affluence and reach to our endeavour, we must observe the will of others,
he said flatly.

I have been absent from Syracuse for some time, and intend to return from it soon, he said ensuring that they knew he wasn’t lobbying for the Papal Crown. Being too ambitious, he said, is a failing, and I don’t aspire to failure. No, but something should be done, he said looking absently into the activity behind them. Where will your support be placed?

After he deliberated with the other Eiffellandian cardinals, Archbishop Strelecki took the floor.

"Gentlemen, one of the roles of the Church is the role of the pastor. That is a role we should not forget or neglect. Not at all. We should pay more attention to our role as pastors. More and more people are turning away from Faith, but the people doing so are insecure and look for meaning in life. One way or the other, we have failed in our role as pastors for them, because they turned away from Faith. Not only they are lost forever, but their children as well. Our future efforts should be aimed at getting those people back to the flock. But we need to do so by winning their hearts back. The same accounts for people from other Christian Faiths, including the Solaris. Those errant people should return to the Mother Church, but they will only return if we win their hearts.
Furthermore, Cardinal Kaminski’s argument shows that Tiburan Catholics are still threatened in some parts of the world. Also to those oppressed Catholics we need to be pastors. We need to support them. We need to struggle to enlighten their oppression.
Pope Stephanus wanted to make a start with becoming more pastoral. We have to continue that line.”

OOC: Not all have voted, but I have 54 out of 68 possible votes, and many of the remaining votes are from people who are inactive any way, so I don't expect votes anytime soon. Most of the major voters have contributed any way. So...here we go.
---------------------
While minor discussions were continuing among the various cardinals, the anonymous votes were collected and brought forward. Accolti directed the deacons to mix match them a bit, and then he proceeded to read the votes aloud as a deacon kept count. The following totals were as follows:

Mayer (Weiserreich): 13
Accolti (Potenza): 12
Puopolo (Talemantine):
10
Maurer (Franken): 8
Hemmingsen (Danmark): 7
Strelecki (Eiffelland): 4
(Corsica): 2
Accolti nodded to the deacon when the tally was finished, and then waved to signal the burning of the voting cards, as per papal tradition. He then turned towards the conclave:

"Brothers, as you know, the traditions and laws of Christ's Church calls for a total of two-thirds vote for the cardinal to be voted upon. At this point, that has not yet occurred. Therefore, let us hold further discussion on this matter. I move it to the people of this conclave to further discuss this matter. We cannot leave until we have chosen one to replace the seat of the great fisherman, that holy seat of the apostle and successor to Christ, Peter."

Accolti pursed his lips a little, looking down. Quietly, he was musing on how many had voted for him. Did so many trust him? As Camerlengo he had extensive knowledge of the machinations of the Capitoline City government and the Church itself, and yet was he ready, if the cardinals so chose, to elect him as the next Holy Father? Deus vult, he whispered quietly. In his usual stoic expression, he showed no emotion or concern, and instead kept his head bowed for others to speak.

OOC: Fixed the last votes again because of a last minute vote from someone - it was Wiese's total I fixed. No more changes, though >:O

---------------------------------

"If there are no further words," Accolti said, "might I propose a course of action before the brothers, in order to progress this conclave along at a quicker pace? I would propose we narrow down the candidates to the two highest votes be chosen as the options for the conclave to vote on. In this way, we might be able to obtain the two-thirds total votes required for the Bishop of Rome to be selected."

Accolti took a small breath, glancing about the room to make certain he had not just suggested something that would be horribly offensive to the conclave, and then added, "Are there any objections to this? We should only go through with this if it is the opinion of the majority of the conclave, as well as our honorable Dean." Accolti turned and bowed slightly to Cardinal Rochambeau.

"The only reason I limited it to the top two," Accolti replied, "is that it would be more difficult to find the two-thirds votes needed with anything more than that. Having four candidates would only add more difficulty. Might I ask, Cardinal Strelecki, why you chose the number four specifically?"

"It will indeed be quicker to find the two-thirds votes needed with only two candidates, but if we leave more people in, we will be more likely to find the right candidate. My idea would be to do this voting round with the four candidates with the highest number of votes, then the next voting round with the three candidates with the highest number of votes, and then all upcoming voting rounds with the two highest candidates," Strelecki said.

"The people of God are waiting on us to choose the next successor to Peter," Accolti replied, "and perhaps the Cardinal Strelecki would need to be reminded of the practices of this conclave in regards to her actions. We are not permitted to simply keep voting like a high school class. If this vote does not lead to a conclusion, we are to take a break and then vote next evening, and the sede vacante continues. I only suggest we limit it to the top two to increase the speed at which we fill in the seat." The camerlengo suspected there were greater things at hand here, and so followed up with the question, "Is there any real reason you desire four? Why not five? Why not six? Why not even three? I understand the prospect of moving down from the top votes, but four seems a peculiar number to begin with."

He turned towards the entire conclave, "If there are no other objections, I might turn this to our honorable dean," he turned towards Rochambeau, "and ask him what he desires we do."

"I chose the number four as a balance between the need for a soon end of the sede vacante and the possibility to really find the best candidate," Strelecki said.

OOC: Believe me, Potenza, I have nothing in my sleeves. Your message was clear enough.

OOC: Didn't mean to imply I thought you were trying something OOC - I apologize if it seemed that way in my IC :p

Also, someone else besides Eiffelland better post (Engellex, get yer butt down here) or I'm picking the pope myself.

Accolti nodded approvingly, "If therefore there are no more objections, then let the second conclave voting continue with the top two results from the previous one. Pray that our Blessed Lord guides us towards the next vicar, and may he serve the church to the utmost of his life."

OOC: PM's on ze way...

There was quite a lot of discussion among the Eiffellandian cardinals, but it was not really clear from the outside what that discussion was about. The only thing that was clear, was that the Eiffellandian cardinals disagreed with each other. At a certain moment, they stepped forward and issued their votes.

OOC: OK, I've given enough time for everyone to vote. I'm closing the elections, though a sizable number has voted already.

Before the voting began, Accolti walked over to the Potenzan cardinals and had a word with them. What he said was in Potenzan Tiburan and was very quiet, and so few around them could hear or discern what he was saying. What people may have noticed was the Potenzan delegates seemed rather shocked and amazed, and some of them responded to Accolti, seemingly asking him questions, some of them in rather loud tones. However, Accolti - in whatever he was doing - remained calm, and his countrymen exchanged sullen glances as they finally nodded.

Now came the second round of voting. The cardinals turned in their votes to the Scrutineers, who in turn handed them to Accolti, who began to read them aloud. When he finished, the final tally was as follows:

Accolti (Potenza) - 21
Mayer (Wieserreich) - 32

Of the total votes, this just barely made the number needed to decide in favor of Mayer. The cardinal from Wieserreich stood, and Accolti approached and asked in Latin, in the tradition of every papal election that had happened before:

"Do you accept your canonical election as Supreme Pontiff?"

"Accepto," Mayer replied, in a Latin affirmative.

The next traditional question Accolti asked was, "By what name do you wish to be called?"

"Martin," Mayer immediately replied, as if he had been considering it.

"Pope Martin VI," Accolti replied, smiling a little, "very good...papa."

At this, the non-cardinal papal officials were readmitted into the conclave to record the events and results of this election. Accolti gave the signal for the deacons to light the torch, signifying that a new pope had been elected. As the Cardinal Protodeacon rushed to the main balcony to give the cry to the people below of Habemus Palpum! Mayer himself was led towards the Room of Tears - a red room next to the Sistine Chapel where the new pope went to dress himself. Mayer chose the small mozzetta as Accolti walked into the room.

"Cardinal Accolti," Mayer began, in his Latin tinged with a Germanic accent, "what did you tell your countrymen?"

Accolti paused in his giving a response, pondering his words carefully, "I told them to vote for your candidacy."

Mayer smiled a little zucchetto was placed over his head, "I had a feeling that was what you told them...was there a particular reason you did?"

"If I hadn't," Accolti replied, "the conclave might have gone on a while too long. God's Church needed a vicar."

Mayer motioned to the papal staff to leave, and once they were gone, the new pope turned and moved towards his Camerlengo:

"You care about the church more than yourself," he began, speaking in Tiburan now, as if out of respect for Accolti's person, "that is a rare thing today. The Church needs more men like you. I would like to draw you closer to me, and keep you near me. There are few men I can trust today."

Accolti showed no reaction, but merely bowed, whispering, "Holy Father..."

The Potenzan cardinal felt a hand on his shoulder, and heard now in Latin, "Come with me, please, to our urbi et orbi." Pope Martin VI, the new holy father and Christ's vicar, the successor to the Peter both in authority and seat, the leader of Christ's people in Christ's Church, now stood on the balcony overlooking St. Peter's Square, in Capitoline City. Thousands of Tiburan Catholic faithful from all corners of the world cheered, awaiting the first blessing of the new pope.

God has used me to bring you to power, Accolti thought to himself, at the very least, I pray it was God who used me...
