Tax Vote Stymied Once More

Motion 23 failed to pass in the Ontolian senate for the 3rd time today.
The Motion regards the introduction of a Flat 10% tax on sales within Ontolia. This tax would come side by side with a 10% reduction in taxes at all levels of the existing graduated income tax system.

Those who support the motion claim it will leave consumers with more money to save for a rainy day if they can simply get by with less.

Those in opposition claim the tax is regressive. “Each and every person knows that a poor man must spend more of his income to survive than a rich man. A poor man will pay a greater proportional share of the new taxes. Only the rich will be benefited here.” Said Member-at-Large (ML) Hector Mackenzie.

The Motion received 55.6% of the vote. Just short of the 65% needed to pass.

Native Protestors Shut Down The 03 between Ontolia City and New Ibiza

Protestors from the Hakon Clan closed off a 2 km section of the 03 Highway between Ontolia City and the inland lake port New Ibiza.

The Protestors are drawing attention to a logging company’s exploitation of land near the Hakon Valley. The Clan lay claim to this land citing a treaty signed in 1872.

The Logging company, McGrogan Forestry, claims it has purchased the land from the Government of Ontolia, and has had no part in any fowl play regarding the lands expropriation from the Clan.

The Government has yet to propose a motion to deal with this issue.

Thorium Plant Opens In Ontolia City.

Ontolia’s second Thorium reactor began providing power to Ontolia City earlier today. The first reactor was unveiled two years ago in Waelia and has been running ever since.

Thorium has many advantages over Uranium as a nuclear fuel. Such as increased proliferation resistance, and reduced nuclear waste production. And most importantly it’s far more abundant in nature than Uranium. But unlike Uranium or Plutonium, Thorium cannot be weaponized.

Some have attempted to characterize the reactor as Dangerous in the Ontolian City Counsel. But scientists claim that no explosive material could come from the reactor thanks to the implementation of liquid-fuel cells.

Sports

The Ontolia City 52’s (OC52’s) lost 5-1 to the Waelia Warriors. Warriors pitcher Alfred Jamison carried a no hitter into the 8th inning before Alex Watanabe hit a home run into the third deck at the McGrogan center in downtown Ontolia.

So ends the OC52’s homestand. Tomorrow they’re on the road to face the New Ibiza Lions.

Protestors Remain Entrenched on Highway 03

Members of the Hakon Clan continue to block traffic on the 03 highway between Ontolia City and New Ibiza.

Member-at-Large Hector Mackenzie went before the senate today and proposed a motion to declare the 1872 document in question legally binding.

This would make it Illegal for McGrogan Forestry to continue logging in the Hakon Valley. This has created a voting split between pro-native and pro-business MLs in the Senate.

Toten holds annual Fish Festival.

Citizens from around the country and some from other parts of Europe descended on Toten today for the fish festival.

Toten holds an international fish market once a year on April 22. Merchants and gourmands from across Europe arrive for the little known event.

“The variety of flavour you can get from seafood’s is infinitely greater than what you can experience with classical livestock.” Said David Leveau host of OTV’s Cooking with David.

Lynx Locomotive goes plans to go International

Lynx Locomotive, the Ontolian Train and Aircraft manufacturing company, is planning on entering the international market.

“Our parts and vehicles are of the highest quality, and the rest of Europe should know it.” Said Elienne Houghton CEO of Lynx Locomotive.

Our own readers will be familiar with the Lynx on a Train logo that bedecks most Locomotives and Planes in this country, the question is, is the rest of Europe ready to for it.

Sports.

The OC52’s went 2-1 against the New Ibiza Lions today. 43 year old Lions Outfielder Fred Merkie led the game off with a solo home run. But that was all the magic the Lions could generate on the day. It was the combination 1-2-3 punch from Alex Watanabe, John Green and Mark Hound in the sixth that put the 52’s on the board. After Watanabe’s single, Green and Hound hit consecutive doubles that would eventually win them the game.

Highway 03 is Open Once More.

After a vote in the senate earlier today, the 1872 Hakon Valley contract was upheld as the legal prior claim.

Protestors celebrated with a traditional Boar hunt as they returned to their valley of Origin.

This is the first time a document from the pre-revolution era has been upheld by the Ontolian Senate.

McGrogan Forestry’s stock have fallen thanks to this latest development, but CEO James McGrogan is optimistic, “…there’s plenty more (…) space out there.”

Olafjord Flooded.

After record setting rainfall much of the province of Olafjord is under up to 10 cm of water.

In Olafjord City alone, the damage to private property is already estimated to have exceeded 3 million Onts. Citizens are largely resilient and will look forward to the day when they can see their own floors again.

The Senate has already tabled and voted on the motion to send in the Ontolian Army to assist in clean up and repair operations.

Kavendish Industries Begins to Build in Waelia.

At a ground breaking ceremony earlier today Kavendish Industry officials put trowel to ground as they announced the Building of what will be the largest retail centre in the Country.

The Kavendish Mall will have room for over a thousand retail outlets, as well as 12 food courts.

Architect John Lovelle said he was inspired by Gothic Cathedrals reminiscent of those in New Ibiza. The mall will of course be much larger than any of them.

Toten Unionist Found Dead

The Toten Fish Festival has come an end on a sour note. Toten Automotive Union head Helen Forthwith was found dead in her home this morning. Police have yet to reveal any details of the case and are treating it as a suspicious incident. Forthwith's family has refused to comment.

Toten is often considered one of the safest cities in the country, and as such the city has been shocked by the death of such a high profile member of the community.
