From the office of the Associated Press in Antioch, capitol of the Zionward Union.
With the election of the new Grand Duke just around the corner it is time to really time to know what our two candidates stand for. Political activity is something citizens have taken extremely seriously ever since the Revolution of 1782. However, in recent decades apathy has set in and has built up some of the issues we face in this current election. While the past century has been calm, many feel as if there are many things that are deeply wrong with the current state of affairs. A representative from the southern half of Nyholm was quotes saying that
“The people of my district feel that this current regime is too liberal. It is hiked tax rates to levels that are unbearable to many of the farmers in the Union and has allowed dissenters to enter the very chambers of our government as to undermine the moral philosophy that this great nation was founded upon.”
With and Income tax of approximately 50%, many believe that this is true. However, in order to combat this exuberant tax rate, the conservatives wish to cut funding to the National Parks and Space program. But, the conservatives also wish to grow the military to a larger size, not by inflating the number enlisted, (for military service is compulsory for at least two years between the time you are eighteen to the time you are twenty.) but by building new bases and updating many of the heavy machinery such as tanks and destroyers. The added cost of these improvements would most likely offset the tax savings from cutting spending else where.
Another major issue in this election is that some feel as if the Catholic moral standard and background that the Zionward Union was built upon is being threatened by protestant neighbors. Some liberals worry that this is a major factor in the increasing split between the Old Guard part and the Reformers party. In a statement Thursday, Reformers party candidate said that such a disparity in the government has been seen within the past half decade than has been seen since the Civil Confusion of 1865. The religious fervor behind the conservative political machine was most clearly seen when this fall when the Old Guard political rally was held outdoors in the square in front of Our Lady Antioch Cathedral. Conservative candidate Gregor Asmanov stated that
“The biggest menace to our children and weak-minded adults is the dilution of moral upstanding by Protestant worms. They often seek to destroy the great foundations of our government and tarnish the ancient traditions of our forefathers by seeking our citizens out and converting them in order to build churches and congregations to spread the sacrilege that is reformed religion.”
More updates will come next week with the conclusion of the debates that are held in Ostholt.
