GREAT ENGELLEX AND THE NEW FRISIAN ERA
WESTMOORELAND, THE NEGLECTED CHILD OF ENGELLEX AND VISTRASIA
Elthambrische, Ducal Metropolis, Duchy of Westmooreland, Great Engellex, May 2012
Lord Roosmalden liked conversation as he liked his work, only when it could be made elegantly witty. In society he always awaited an opportunity to say something striking, and took part in a conversation only when that was possible. His conversation was always sprinkled with wittily original, finished phrases of general interest. These sayings were prepared in the innter sanctum of his mind in a portable form as if intentionally, so that insignificant society people might carry them from drawing room to drawing room. And, in fact, Lord Roosmalden’s witticisms were indeed hawked about in the drawing rooms of the provincial capital of Westmooreland and often had an influence on matters considered of great and serious importance within this eastern realm of Great Engellex.
His thin, weathered face was covered with deep wrinkles, which always looked as clean and well washed as the tips of the Duchess of Westmooreland’s fingers after taking the waters at Royal Spa. The movement of his wrinkles formed the principal play of expression on his face. Well, I shall tell you of the exploits you shall surely make. Roosmalden, rather theatrically without mentioning himself, described to the Frisian on how he shall be engaged in the reception of the Duke and Duchess of Westmooreland later that day. They shall receive you and this new era of Fryslân as alike the peasantry of Engelleaux on the tidings of Saint Georgiana and the Dragon. Roosmalden smiled and the wrinkles on his face briefly disappeared.
However, my dear friend, he remarked in the Westmoorish-Vistrasian dialect, examining the shine of his silver cane from a distance, despite the positive esteem I foresee, I confess that the Frisian victory is not the most victorious to grace the continent, his forehead puckered into deep folds and his eyebrows were lifted, his small and deep set eyes twinkled and looked straight up to the Frisian to assure the gentleman of his subtle humour. Lord Roosmalden was playing a game that more than likely eluded the Frisian. But seriously, said Roosmalden, we can at any rate say without boastful impertinence that it was a little better than the events of Montelimar..*In the midst of his own words the lord burst out :- Oh, I shall not speak of Montelimar. Perhaps I cannot appreciate the war for the true splendour of the achievements grasped, but the duchy (of Westmooreland) never was entirely enthusiastic for war, the rather humble court of the duke and duchess is inclined only to the greater advancement of trade with our immediate neighbours – traditional markets, typically Vistrasian – though, that is where my Commission comes into force, he smiled. Westmooreland and Fryslân must seize the initiative, Vistrasia, too. Her Majesty the Queen-Empress recognises the high vocation of the duchy in this industrious regard for our (Westmooreland; Vistrasia; Fryslân) rather humble corner of the continent.
Lord Roosmalden suddenly paused, twirling his cane within his hands, and smiled, shall you have a cup of tea?
[[OOC :- Lord Roosmalden is the Prime Minister of Westmooreland. *he was comparing the Frisian regime change to the regime change of Montelimar.
