POPE JOHN NAMES ABBOT WOODSTONE ARCHBISHOP OF WINDHAVEN
The Abbot of Holyrood and leader of the Order of St. Fergus, Abbé Edmund Woodstone, was named Archbishop of Windhaven by Pope John XXIII in Herzogenrode. The post makes him primate of Gunnland, the senior-most prelate in the country.
Archbishop Woodstone replaces Henry Cardinal Stewart, who died several weeks ago while visiting the Holy Father. The announcement was delayed until news could reach the abbot, who is currently making a tour of Fergusine missions to Far Himyar, in Loago and Port Stanley. He is expected to be named a cardinal in the next consistory.
His appointment came as something of a surprise. It was rumored that Cardinal Stewart, a powerful figure in the Church, had been grooming Msgr. Coemgein Gallagher as a successor. Gallagher was named a monsignor by the pope just before the appointment of Woodstone was made known. Some thought the Bishop Justin Broithe of Ayr, who is popular among liberals, would receive promotion. Woodstone is universally respected, although known to have personal differences with hardliners like Msgr. Gallagher and more accommodating churchmen like Bishop Broithe.
Archbishop Woodstone is descended from the Waldsteins of Geotri, and recently translated the Krieger Herr epic reportedly written by a monk in his family tree.
