Historic Air Receivo Telescope Collapses
Massive Dish "A Ruin"

Porto Rikart - The world's astronomical community is aghast in the wake of the collapse of the Air Receivo Observatory Telescope at the Royal Astronomy Center on Rikart's Isle, bringing an at least extended, if not permanent, halt to the 55 year joint Royal-Ecclesiastical scientific endeavor.

Completed in 1965, the Air Receivo Telescope was constructed within the extinct caldera of a primordial volcano, formed as part of the same extended geological event that raised Rikart's Isle so high above the waves in the first place. Being so many miles off the Tiwanaku coast while also sharing it's generally favorable latitude and at the time altogether lacking extensive human settlement - and thus light pollution - the island proved a perfect home for the astronomical research project first envisioned by the Reverend Dr. Wilhelmus Zaretta in 1948.

As association between Rev. Dr. Zaretta's Catholic University of the West in Ricimerus, Tiwanaku, as well as the Royal University for the Sciences at Vicovaro was formed to explore the feasibility of the plan, and funding was authorized from both institutions in fairly short order - with generous endowments from the Crown and a number of other private sources. Two contractors, von Sebt-Praeger of Bajorország and Kavanagh Industries of Eiffelland, in a construction project that lasted nearly twelve years and has since been hailed as one of the great engineering marvels of the modern world.

Representatives for the Royal Astronomy Center have indicated that a recent and unprecedented increase in seismic activity in the region is most likely to blame for the collapse of the 48 hectare semi-spherical telescope. Especially at blame, they believe, was the monstrous 7.8 quake that laid waste to much of the Tiwanaku coast in July. Both the scientists barracks and Array Control Center suffered damage at the time, and experts warned that the enormous suspension system for the telescope had been compromised by the upheaval as well.

No further comment was made available from the RAC, but some commitment to the construction of a replacement has already been voiced by His Most Catholic Majesty's Councilors.

We are saddened by the collapse of the telescope which surely contributed greatly to the scientific understanding of mankind. The Commonwealth would be willing to work with the international community to construct a potential new telescope in Calva in the future. We have many regions without light pollution and are close to the equator so such a project would be ideally situated in our small country.

Increased seismic activity across certain areas of the globe continues to be recorded by the scientific community across the globe, urging the question of whether greater upheavals are yet to occur. When events such as the one that led to the collapse of Tiwanaku Telescope occur, they are tragedies on their own which might perhaps act as warning signs of potentially greater concerns to come, the effect of which might be avoided or at least mitigated thanks to prior sacrifices. The provisional government has instructed its scientific measuring stations across the globe to maintain special vigilance and formulate recommendations for civic response teams as appropriate.

Excellencies of the Commonwealth Foreign Office,

It is my great and most humble pleasure to thank you for the concern and support you have shown for one of the greatest scientific endeavors in Modern Christendom, and the most lamentably tragic circumstances that have befallen it. Likewise, your generosity in this matter has been noted and will be accounted for in future decision making regarding the construction of a replacement telescope array.

Both this Archdiocese and the Holy Mother Church of Tibur maintain the utmost commitment to the advancement of knowledge of the material universe - that we might better know wonder at the creation of God - and have been and recently were again reassured of similar sentiments on behalf of His Most Catholic Majesty, Audacer X, in Altaturra. It is not our belief that the Apostolic Kingdom holds any propriety sense of prideful ownership over this endeavor, and it is believed that if a better site were to be known elsewhere, no issue would arise or be made of it.

I hope that you will appreciate the further delicacy of this matter, as there are issues of liability to sort through, but I assure you that the Commonwealth Foreign Ministry will be read into the loop at the earliest practical convenience.

Thank you once again, and may God keep you in grace and peace for all your days,

Cardinal Octavius Filimero,
Archdiocese of Ricimerus in the
Viceroyalty of Tiwanaku, Apostolic Kingdom of Vistarika

Department of the Silk Sea

T
rying, indeed, are times such as these, when the very earth 'neath our feet and the salt waves upon which we sail seem to be set at odds against us. I believe it has been better said elsewhere, but it has truly some long and blissful years since a tragedy of such enormity has befallen the scientific community, both the Vistarikan or wider world's.

Questions have already been raised in the Miklastava, regarding the inability of the involved parties to put some measures into effect, even temporarily, to mitigate the apparently significant impact of the widespread seismic upheaval witnessed around the Silk Seas in late summer had on the site.

We thank our friends and partners within the Provisional Government for their concern and continued vigilance in the skies over all our heads. Though we have suffered a setback in this regard, the commitment of the Viceroyalty, Apostolic Kingdom and Royal Astronomical Center to this cause remains as firm as ever.

Erulas* Nivard Alcoin Andreas v.** Genaro,
His Apostolic Majesty's Councilor for the Silk Sea

*modernized form of a term best attested in Old Norse but common to contemporary and earlier Germanic dialects, erilaz, meaning "magician," "rune master" or - as in this case - "earl/jarl." In the Vistarikan noble hierarchy, the modern Erulas is ranked as beneath dukes but above counts.
**an abbreviated nobiliary participle - von - which the Gothic speaking Vistarans adopted from their cousins in the middle of the continent as it developed in the so-called Middle Ages. The abbreviation of von typically indicates the authentic and often ancient nobility of the name's bearer, as in the case of Erulas Nivard.

CHANGE COMES TO WIEN
Ostmark Free from Proletarian Terror?

Altaturra - With typical if perhaps premature exuberance, the people of Ostmark are coming together to mark this time of great transition in the lives of their nation, as the era of Grasserist dictatorship draws to a close. While spirits run high throughout the now formerly socialist country, the world wonders - is this a change that will last, and will it produce meaningful results for Ostmark and her neighbors?

Admittedly short lived, the regime helmed by Communard demagogues, siblings Horst and Andrea Grasser, was able to transform the country virtually overnight, leaving many around the continent shaken by the resurrected specter of revolutionary terror. Dead and buried as a significant political threat for most since the 1930s, the ease with which many Ostmarkers simply accepted the descent of their nation into proletarian madness is yet still a matter of much confusion and disgust in Altaturra, where the rise of the Grassers was greeted with outright hostility.

Sentiments from the Hightower remain guarded and measured today, with many noting the at best lukewarm revelry in Wien, marking what, for any other civilized people, would be a very nearly Biblical liberation from diabolical tyranny. "They just don't seem to recognize the full extent of the story they have lived, or the opportunity they now have to do away with every reminder of this miserably grinding embarrassment to the history of their formerly great nation," said General Assemblyman Petro Marze (Patrimonium), representing the 133rd Assembly from Metinna.

The Vistarikan Department of the Old World has as yet not issued any travel advisories regarding subjects of His Apostolic Majesty and Ostmark, as other nations around the region have already done... [cont'd on pg. 3]

MT. RINGAPI SAID TO BE CLOSE TO ERUPTION
Authorities Issue Advisory for Holiday Travel in Orientalis

Orientalis - The largest volcano in the Ten Thousand Islands Colony, the towering Mt. Ringapi, appears to be heading towards a significant eruption, per a weekend assessment by the Royal Geological Survey. Located 74 miles (119km) E/NE of the Department Seat of Orientalis, Mt. Ringapi forms the highest point of a 3.5 mile (5.6km) volcanic island thrust up by successive pulses of volcanic material beginning in the 9th century BC, and has created periodic difficulties for shipping in regional waters in more recent times.

Beginning with the late summer outbreak of seismicity around the rim of the Silk Seas, Colonial Administrators noted an almost immediate impact upon Ringapi, with a troubling new volcanic dome appearing in the caldera formed by a previous eruption in 1918. "New material is being injected into the volcano's 'feeder tubes,' bringing an infusion of rather volatile and gas-rich magma up from the planet's superheated, Stygian depths." Dr. Fransek Ignatius of the RGS explained at a press conference earlier today, apparently quite troubled with how quickly the situation atop the tropical peak appears to be changing.

"We don't have any firm predictions for when Ringapi will go, but we are fairly sure that an at least locally significant eruption is coming within the next several months." Dr. Ignatius continued, doing absolutely no favors to the local economy and the normally guaranteed infusion of scudos from the Holiday Travel Season. It as yet remains unclear what, if any impact an eruption on Mt. Ringapi would have for the legendarily pristine beaches of Orientalis, but it is suspected to be more substantial than can be easily - or responsibly - ignored... [cont'd on pg. 2]

We thank his Excellency Filimero for his due consideration and appropriate assessment of our offer to assist with the current calamity for all of science. We trust that whatever decision will ultimately be made, it will be made in the interest of science, humanity and in consideration of the national determination of the Vistarikan people, which is not known to be lacking in the slightest.

KINGDOM'S TOP CLERIC MAKES TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO PULPIT
Cardinal Urban Atwulf Back At It After Six Month Hiatus

Torrence - In his first service in nearly six months, Cardinal Urban Atwulf, 64 - His Eminence - returned to the pulpit of his ecclesiastical seat at St. Grimaldus Basilica in Torrence to deliver a sermon on the grace of St. Joseph in accepting God's plan. With what many view as an act of grace of his own, the Apostolic Kingdom's most senior Prince of the Church can only be described as not only returning to form - but having never lost it.

Sidelined by a major stroke in late July, many feared that Vistarika might be robbed of their beloved modern patriarch, triggering an enormous outpouring of emotion from millions around the country and world. The Cardinal's office quickly moved to alleviate concerns and made it clear that His Eminence would, eventually, return to service, but many still lamented the likely loss of one of this era's greatest living orators. It would, however, become apparent that the prayers of so many of the faithful were to be answered - and that Urban Atwulf was not a man to simply be undone by something so mundane and trivial as a mere stroke.

Even while engaged in a grueling regimen of physical rehabilitation, His Eminence recorded several bedside talks for his parishioners and faithful admirers. Buoyed by the thousands of letters received from the concerned and faithful in his time of convalescence...[cont'd on pg 2b]

GROWING ROW IN METINNA OVER BORDER-HOPPING INFANTICIDES
Busload of Alleged Baby Killers Remain in Detention

Metinna - It has long been something of an openly dirty secret in Vistarika that young women, finding themselves in the way of carrying a child, and lacking the means to care for said child (and any hope for tomorrow besides), will often look across the border to Bajororszag for some form of relief in their dire circumstances - however immoral. This is a result of the practice of infanticide, now called abortion in much of the rest of the world, being wholly illegal in the Apostolic Kingdom, with no way to secure one save the absolute most serious medical necessity.

These circumstances have, apparently, once again conspired to see a rented tour bus full of young women, ages ranging from mid and late teens to early 30s, making such a journey between Vistarika and her Eastern neighbor yesterday. All were listed as pregnant in recent medical records, and presumably still were when crossed the border into Bajororszag. According to the driver for their tour bus, whose name and employer as being withheld by authorities at present, it was only when the bus arrived at its destination that the true horror of the situation became clear.

Provided only with GPS coordinates before the drive began, which would normally have raised some suspicion in and of itself, a spokesman for the Royal Border Security Agency said that "the driver wasn't as worried because it was just a busload of girls, what sort of trouble could they be up to?" While it was clear that they had arrived at some form of medical office, it would not be until after all the "tourists" had exited the vehicle and gone inside when the driver was able to make the full translation of the office's shingle.

"Obviously shaken" in his initial call to the Metinna Metropolitan Police back across the border, the driver was told to wait and act as if everything was normal, allowing the girls to return to the bus without challenge. From there, he was to bring them back, exactly as the rental contract stipulated, whereupon Vistarikan law enforcement would handle the rest. Without fail, it was exactly this that the driver would do, delivering seventeen young women of the previously described range of ages into the joint custody of Metinnese and National authorities.

Speaking at a noon conference on the matter, Metinna's Lord Mayor Alatheon Ward told the press,

"Clearly, we cannot reveal the identity of any of these girls, but we can confirm that each of them was pregnant before the trip across the border, and that they were not upon their return. All have been charged, have had their passports seized and are being detained by the Metro Police. More than that, I cannot and just will not say."

No comment on the matter had been made available from the Bajoran officials on the other side of the border by time of publication, but will be an addendum will be made immediately upon the release of such.

Ringapi Claims Dozens of Victims
Ill-fated "Thrill Seekers' Cruise" Struck by Fiery Debris, All Aboard Dead

Orientalis - An entirely avoidable tragedy is unfolding in the Ten Thousand Islands this morning, as news of the loss of the Thrill Seekers Cruises vessel Liontamer reaches the wider world, apparently claimimg the lives of all forty seven souls aboard at the time.

A prominent fixture with tourists in the region for more than thirty years, Thrill Seeker Cruises books trips to most of the prominent sites within both the Apostolic Kingdom's Silk Seas colony and neighboring Madaray. The trip to Mt. Ringapi had been booked for weeks prior to the volcano's explosive eruption earlier in the week, and it remains as yet unclear why the crew continued on their course to the now prohibited area after the initiation of travel bans.

Discovered by a naval reconnaissance helicopter flown out from the SAMS Gadez, the Liontamer was already well within the "Absolute Exclusion Zone" of ten nautical miles from Ringapi. Ordered to evacuate the waters immediately and proceed to coordinates where they could be safely boarded by the Gadez, a spokesman for the Royal Navy said that "the crew did, at least, appear to be complying with the orders" when a particularly large and violent explosion of material from the volcano occurred, at which time the Liontamer was reportedly struck by at least one chunk of burning debris "at least the size of a man."

Few details have been made available on the incident after the initial strike, but it does seem that the Liontamer took at least two more hits before the naval helicopter was itself forced to evacuate, and was already aflame and listing badly to one side due to the hits taken. By the time the rain of massive, burning boulders had subsided and another flight could be dispatched, aside from random personal effects and a slick of engine oil, there was reportedly no sign of the boat above the waves

The identities of those lost are being withheld by the Navy and Colonial officials, as there is a very high likelihood of legal action being taken against Thrill Seekers Cruises by the families and local government.

QUADIAN COURT REFUSES TO CAVE BEFORE PRESSURE
Ongoing Debate Over Incarcerated Infanticides Won't Sway Metinna Judiciary

Metinna - The death (by suicide) of the second of the so-called "Murderous Mums of Metinna" will not serve as an impediment to the the legal process in regards to the troublesome case, according to First Barrister Gottfried Ruprecht, Vistarikan Quadia's top jurist.

Met by the media on the steps of Metinna's Hall of Justice after today's unscheduled hearing on the case, First Barrister Ruprecht assured all that "while the prosecution of justice remains the foremost concern of this [the Quadian] Judiciary, neither have nor will we disregard the fundamental principles of our national constitution, especially in regards to the humane treatment of prisoners."

Queried over the apparent perception that Vistarika's legal system is harsher and more unforgiving of such acts than many of their immediate neighbors, Ruprecht appeared more than a little nonplussed with the insinuation, responding that "Of course this court regrets the deaths of Ms. Linklater and Ms. Alois, but I should remind you all that it [the court] also has an obligation to see justice done by the nearly two dozen young lives that these women so callously ended."

Further hearings on the case are expected later this week, though details remain scant regarding whether or not the remaining defendants will be present... [cont'd on pg 1b]

MAD NUDIST IN CUSTODY AFTER INVADING ASSEMBLY SESSION
Luca Breight, 27, Charged with Public Indecency and Unlawfully Entering Government Property

Altaturra - Weeks of maneuvering in the National Assembly over proposed interest rate cuts ground to a sudden halt earlier today when a Geso man, Luca Breight, 27, burst through the Assembly Chamber's great oaken doors, completely unbidden and totally unannounced.
Screeching at the top of his lungs, wearing a head-mounted "selfie-stick" and naught else but what his mother and the Good Lord gave him and trailing a gaggle of Miklagard, many Legislators reportedly found themselves transfixed by the utter absurdity of what they were witnessing.

Mr. Breight was recorded entering the Legislative Palace fully clothed little more than fifteen minutes prior to the invasion, at which time he displayed no evidence of being unhinged or any other erratic behaviors. Security footage revealed that Mr. Breight loitered within the Palace Foyer very briefly before entering the public restroom on that floor, where it is believed that he stripped and assembled the selfie stick, to which his cellphone was affixed. It would not be long before he was noticed upon exiting the restroom, fully nude, whereupon began the spirited chase that ended on the Assembly floor some minutes later.

Witnesses reported hearing the naked man yelling that security (the Great Guards) "wanted to alter the angle of the dangle," and that "the Big D must be free" as he raced down the corridors of the nation's legislature, overturning furniture and tossing fire extinguishers in the path of his pursuers. Though the flight would continue, as previously noted, to the very floor of the Assembly - literally - it is believed that the determination had already been made that no significant threat was posed to lawmakers, beyond perhaps their eyes... TEMPERS FLARE OVER PROPOSED REVISIONS TO "MERCENARY ACT"
Detractors Maintain that Utilization of Private Military Contractors would Undermine Vistarikan Interest Abroad

Altaturra - The clamor of debate and as yet unreconciled disagreement over the future course of the Apostolic Kingdom's defense and security arrangements spilled out from the Halls of the Elect and Mighty and into the rest of the capital this afternoon, as Assembly leaders calling a recess to today's session without any progress towards a consensus on the matter.

The particular matter in this case being the proposed relaxation of the restrictions placed upon the number of private military contractors permitted to be deployed to Vistarika's Overseas Dependencies, as well as the type of actions that PMCs are able to take part in. The proposal, which drew the immediate ire of many within the Assembly's lately quite vocal Left, was introduced to the Assembly by veteran legislator and longtime Joint-Legislative Defense Committee member Arnaud Screibner (Optimate, Casturia's 17th Assembly) on behalf of a growing caucus of Optimates/Patrimonium and Plantationists.

Wurdforer Bokaris, also of the Opt/Pat Coalition, was reportedly quite troubled over the breakdown in debate so soon after the introduction of the proposal, and was quick to issue a statement making clear his support for the proposed changes:

"This is not the time for us to nod off at the tiller, when so many of our neighbors appear hellbent upon the largely unprovoked and hasty expansion of their own defense committments - despite the growing unity of our own Old World as fostered by the foundation of CSEAC. Our own commitments to His Apostolic Majesty's subjects here, at home, and abroad in the wider world remain intact as well, I must remind you, and we must take these developments into account now while we still have time to take a hand in shaping the newly emerging order."
While the Assembly will resume the session tomorrow morning, and preliminary support amongst the general electorate appears to be high, key opposition leaders have said they will continue to resist pressure to "acquiesce to the deployment of jackbooted mercenaries to Qualianco, or anywhere else the Vistarikan flag flies over - for now," as Remund Argentus (Forwardist, Dunasia's 104th Assembly) would put it, speaking to us over phone this afternoon... POTENTIALLY EXPLOSIVE SITUATION BEING DEFUSED BY SSG-7
Routine Zoning Survey Uncovered "Forgotten Bomb-Factory" in Abandoned Warehouse

Torrence - A scene evoking memories of the height of the often fatal social turmoil of the late 1970s "Tartessian Terror" unfolded in Torrence's Old Quarter Tuesday evening, as local and national law enforcement agencies descended on what is being described as "one of the largest illegal bomb-making operations ever discovered in Vistarika."

Included in this nefariously prolific operation was a warehouse housing five vehicles of various makes already wired, loaded and waiting only to be parked, as well as more than a dozen smaller devices that had been "meticulously assembled and were being stored according to weight and potential yields." An almost inconceivable amount of carnage would have been unleashed with the detonation of even a portion of these devices, in other words. Most curious of all, however, is that the hoard was apparently abandoned and had remained altogether untouched for more than forty years.

The shocking find was made by surveyors subcontracted to assist in undertaking the project for revitalizing Torrence's historic but languishing Old Quarter just a half hour before they were to go home for the day. Reporting to the Torrence Constables that nothing appeared immediately out of the ordinary inside the warehouse, which was listed as being most recently owned by a long-dead Tartessian used car salesman. Finding cars, even several, apparently forgotten in such abandoned properties is far from uncommon, and no special attention was paid to those by the surveyors. "The smaller devices though, they caught their eye immediately," Lt. Emil Balter of the Torrence Constabulary told us, "one of the subcontractors was a veteran that just so happened to have been EOD [Explosive Ordnance Disposal], and so was able to recognize what they were looking at fairly quickly."

Local authorities made the determination that many of the devices were so badly corroded from being left in the open for so long that the situation was more complex than they were prepared to handle, and so the decision was made to call for assistance from the National Police's Special Service Group 07. While unconfirmed, it is believed that they remain on site and are still actively defusing the devices.

"That the initial Discovery was made as it was, by municipal surveyors, rather than some adventurous teenagers or drug addled transients was a small miracle," Lord-Mayor Lufgt Altorp... [cont'd here]

Quadian SM Fischer OUT After 21 Days of Lawlessness
Interim States Minister Leo Mörike Immediately Drafts Order Calling out Provincial Fire Brigades

Metinna - Three weeks of indecision and hand wringing in the face of increasingly violent and destructively costly demonstrations turned riot appear to have cost Augustin Fischer, the now former Forwardist States Minister of Vistarikan Quadia, his job. His former Deputy, Leo Mörike [F] got the message, and has wasted no time in affecting some change in the "situation" in downtown Metinna, calling out the Quadian Fire Brigades for only the third time since the Great War. While certainly not the foe faced by the Apostolic Kingdom's soldiers in those days, the horde of Anti-Statists, Radical Republican Alaricists and "Militant Feminists" that have run riot through the city for so long have now drawn a response to their lawlessness.

Falling prey to the ire of the Patrimonium-dominated Quadian Senate, Fischer was called before the state's legislature to face a Vote of No Confidence Saturday - returning supporting votes from no more than a fifth of their number. Senate majority leader Edouard Kerner summed up the vote by saying that "...there's no excuse for a clear cut case involving a busload of infanticides, or the murder of a single woman, to have snowballed into the anarchy that we've witnessed in Metinna, and indeed, across the border in Bajorország. These people are malefactors, profiteering hand over fist at the mere flimsiest of excuses, and our sufferance for it was exhausted already two weeks ago, and while we can't do much save offer our support for beleaguered Csonka, we can by God see something done for it here."

States Minister Leo Mörike was sworn in immediately thereafter, honored by His Eminence, Archbishop Mordred of Metinna to receive his oath of office. Mörike is considered a moderate within the Quadian Forwardist structure, and reportedly found his way into the otherwise radically liberal Fischer administration as a concession to the traditionalist camp within the party. More likely to work with an otherwise oppositional provincial Senate, in other words.

Hightower insiders report that the new States Minister received a call from Wordbearer Bokaris not long after his ascent to office, and the order calling out the Fire Brigades had been issued within fifteen minutes thereafter. This was followed itself very shortly by a rather frankly worded statement to the press, closed with the following:

"I know I'm breaking with party orthodoxy here, but like everyone keeps saying, enough is enough. There's legitimate concern for social justice, and even outrage against legitimate injustices, but there's no defense for the wanton violence and devastation of both public and private businesses and institutions I am ashamed to say my friend, and former boss allowed under his watch. This mob is not my constituency, and will not stand between this administration and its duty to the people of Metinna, or Quadia at large."
The Fire Brigades, a natively Vistarikan institution combining volunteer fire departments with provincial militia duty, are thought to be a more relatable and effective response to the level of threat posed in this case. It is hoped that they will be able to quell the unrest expected to continue into tonight with their presence alone, but are equipped and trained to disperse rioters if necessary...[cont'd]
