The heavily armed column of soldiers made it's way across the valley, being careful to cover their flanks as they advanced to their objective. A lack of roads in the area had made it impossible for the normally mounted unit to utilize it's vehicles, which had to be left to wait at a base camp 7 miles down the road. An attack was expected at any moment now, and officers would stop the column to send ahead small patrols. This was the perfect area for an ambush, and the enemy would surely use it to their advantage as they were heavily outnumbered after the firefights of the night before. The faster the 436th Mechanized Battalion, E Company could make it out of the valley, the better.

An inexperienced Lieutenant ordered the halt of the lead platoon, and began walking out in front of the line to inspect it himself. Surely to impress his superiors. A sharp snap and a whiz, and the Lieutenant went down. Soldiers began to spread out as officers barked out orders. Gunfire erupted from the cliffs above and several men fell where they just seconds before huddled in cover. Smoke and grenades were thrown at the attacking force and E Company returned fire, just as the book called for.

The foe made their way down the cliffs and into the pinned company, slaughtering those around. They had the entire unit at bay and a murderous crossfire destroyed the ranks of E Company. Corporal Hansen tripped over a branch and lay on his back just about to recover himself when a thick heel dug itself into his neck, he turned over, but it was too late, the butt of a rifle hit him in the chest, and the soldier above smirkingly said “Bang Bang.”

A heavily decorated Sergeant Major briskly walked passed the soldiers as they stood at attention. He stopped in front of the Lieutenant who had been the first victim of the ambush earlier that day. The young officer was slightly shaking as the Sergeant Glared into his eyes. “What in the hell were you thinking moron? Are you trying to get your entire platoon killed?” The Sergeant turned and stopped in front of the entire formation.

“You have just had a 100% causality rate in a damned combat exercise. That is completely unacceptable, and due to some obvious problems in your leadership, you will all pay.” None one dared speak as the Sergeant continued “And you will pay on my time. You have 30 minutes to prepare for a 3 day hump across the valley. Dismissed!”

The soldiers quickly fell out and with a grunt began to assemble their assault packs and replenish their gear. They hadn't had a decent night's sleep in over a week, and combat fatigue was beginning to set in. The NCO's in the company glared at the Lieutenant who was now blamed for the entire company's “defeat.”

Corporal Hansen was a third year Conscript in His Majesties Royal Army. He had been forced into service when he turned 18, as did the the rest of his peers who hadn't gone off to officer's school, or the few who would become Doctors and Lawyers. To earn your citizenship in Anglia, you had to serve at least 3 years in service. Most Anglians had no problem with this, as military service was considered the highest calling for one's country and portrayed as a glorious career. In fact, the entire country was based around the military. It was a highly efficient system, but if you wished to join a non-military service career after high school, you would need a large amount of money or get perfect grades. Those two things Corporal Hansen did not possess and therefore, he was a grunt in the Army. Just as his forefathers had been.

The call to move out came all too soon, and Echo Company grudgingly made it's way back into the valley.
