Cantigian Triple Crown Preview
20 of Europe's finest thoroughbred racehorses are off to the races
Dispatched from First Haven, Cantignia on 16 June, 2012

From around the world and from within the friendly confines - the field is set for the 85th running of The First Haven Derby, the first of three comprising the 2012 Cantigian Triple Crown. Thousands are expected to turn up in attendance, and millions of interested fans will watch Saturday's match-up of 20 thoroughbred horses at First Haven Racegrounds, in Concordia.

The full field of 20 were entered and placed in their post positions this Saturday for the Derby, and the event will be run for the 85th consecutive year next Saturday with an approximate post of 0530 CST. A crowd in excess of 175,000 will be packed in to the Racegrounds for this crucial first leg of the Triple Crown, which will be seen by millions more during the ITC telecast, and heard over the airwaves of Imperial Review's radio service to the Great Engellexic Empire.

Running alongside these horses are legendary storylines, which will play out on Cantigian racing's greatest stage—whether morning-line favorite 'Redemption' can redeem the Loveguard Family Farm, which has failed to field a winning horse since 1967, or whether foreign favorite 'Catamount' can finally overcome the failures of past horses hailing from the beaches of Monterrey.

Redemption, a colt jockeyed by veteran and past winner Buck Dobbins, fared decently in the draw with post 9. Two-time Derby-winning trainer Calvin Fletcher was hoping to be more toward the inside, but expressed confidence in Redemption's versatility from the middle. Catamount, frequent winner of the Carrera de caballos de San Diego de Alcalá, drew three stalls to the outside of Redemption. With Anglian favorite King & Country in post 10 and Altaisk favorite Fulger in post 11, that leaves four of the race's major contenders right in line.

Charlotte's Favour, a champion in his second year in Great Engellex, will attempt to extend his undefeated streak down under for at least two legs of the Triple Crown, and the third if the first two are won. Meanwhile, prestigious Kong Christian V Steeplechase winner Lynafeld has impressed early track viewers with graceful training jaunts around the grounds, inspiring longshot betters to give Lynafeld a gamblers chance.

"This is the widest pedigree we've ever fielded," Alan Chaungeour, President of the Triple Crown Association said. "If there was ever a fear that the Can-Engellexic reign of glory was over, this is the year a foreign threat could turn that fear in to reality."

The First Haven Derby field, from the rail out, with nationality, name, and owner:

The First Haven Derby field is limited to 20 runners based on pedigree and past winnings. Full House and Red Mist were also entered on Saturday morning, but were excluded from the main body of the field. If any defections occur before scratch time, 9 a.m. CST next Saturday, Red Mist or Full House will be allowed to move into the main body of the field. The colt will be designated in the extreme outside post position if he draws into the race.

Kersveld
Perspectives from South Himyar
War Lords Flee, Politicians Turn Their Coats, and the People Vote
Dispatched from Sondorstaad, Kersveld on 22 June, 2012

One-hundred years ago, Lord & General Lafe Mbadinuju marched in to Sondorstaad to depose Marcellus Engelfields, an Engellexic-Exile who styled himself White King of The Kersveld. Within the month the Lord General was subsequently under attack by his own officers who claimed to lead a Republican Revolution, ushering in an age of betrayal and intrigue which has ended, or perhaps started anew, with the invasion of Covenant Forces this Spring.

In this effort, the Grand Force of the Covenant clashed with infamous drug lords, armed republicans, and countless third-party contingencies ranging from then noble to corrupt who characterize the Kersveld today. The operation was known informally as “Cherrybomb", and it is one of the many attempts to steer South Himyar in what Covenant policymakers believe to be the righteous direction.

Despite his decade spanning reign with the direct aid of arms dealers and drug runners, President & Lord Odhiambo Nnamani remains in power within Sondorstaad. His newest allies come in the form of Cantigian Prohibitionists and, with a simple stretch of the term, arms dealers. Nnamani’s charisma and energy continues to vitalize the region, but his history as a suppresor of democracy, and ally to the strongest fist in the region, fails to accomadate an increasingly educated populace.

Wasswa Obasanja, who remains missing since the sack of the capital—was ever the master bureaucrat, but his vision for the Kersveld was never anything less than racially or financially motivated. Since coming to power with the help of The Kersveld Traders Union, ruling party in the country since the revolution, Obasanja has facilitated President Odhiambo's choice relations with black market power brokers, and undermined the democratic process.

Obscured by a century of self-imposed isolation, the Kersveld has been both diplomatically and geographically distant from civilized Europe since its discovery, with only the dangerously close Karoskland Islands claiming any vague association with the Republic. Before the Cantigian invasion, the Covenant and Republic had no diplomatic relations at all. Only now through aerial, naval, and marshal negotiations, has the Covenant has filled that diplomatic void, and exposed an uneasy patch of scorched earth to the European Community.

With the grittiest and most infamous criminals now either killed or in-hiding, their Cantigian-approved replacements face regulating an economy in paralysis, granting unheard of personal liberties, and doing it all amid newfound democratic voices ranging in both race and gender. It is expected that with or without Cantigian influence, the Kersveld is likely to remain a predominantly black, male dominated country. Yet some still believe that with just oversight, a future Kersveld could potentially resemble something above a third-world backwater, long forgotten by the masses, and universally black listed by businesses from the European mainland.

Colonial
Terror Attack Thwarted
Wightland Flight to Vesper Diverted to Redemption After Botched Attack
Dispatched from Barksdale, Redemption on 29 June, 2012

A Grand Colonial Aeroservice jet traveling from the Wightland Islands to Vesper was diverted to Lower Redemption Friday morning after a black passenger, identified as Kwame Masamba, rushed the cockpit; confirming a tip collected by the Covenant Internal & Domestic Service (CIDS) earlier this week.

An undercover CIDS Officer was armed and seated near the front of the plane, officials said, and was there with a tranquilizer to down the terror suspect as he was opening the cockpit door. An examination by Barksdale O.S. Hospital doctors report that the suspect, a Kersveld born citizen of Wightland, is awake and recovering from mysterious head wounds.

The Internal & Domestic Service warned transit authorities earlier this month that terrorist events occuring elswhere in Europe are a "precursor to the threat facing our friendly confines in the future", advocating increased airport security and the implementation of in-flight security measures.

"We've gathered that the terrorist was unarmed, counting on exploiting our innocence, but I can assure you: the terrorists of the future will not make the same mistake," said Alan Fremont, the Chief Officer for Transportation, and a ranking National Democrat in Covenant.

Two Thunderchief fighters scrambled from the Cedar Islands to escort the Grand Colonial jet, carrying seventy-six passengers and six crew members to Redemption Regional Airfield, where it landed shortly before sunrise. Passengers were served complimentary spirits, including '1867 Monterrey Tequila', to ease tensions as the roaring Thunderchief fighters intercepted the flight, said Nathaniel Glinn, a spokesman for Grand Colonial Aeroservices.

Famine in Boliatur
Cantigian Foreign Officer Alleges 'Deliberate Genocide' the Cause
Dispatched from Vesper, Cantignia on 17 July, 2012

Hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of poverty stricken citizens from the Radical Republic of Boliatur are reportedly dying in the streets from starvation, dehydration, and related illnesses.

The Covenant's Regional Foreign Officer (RFO) to Toyou has accused the Republic of Boliatur of manipulating a famine this morning, in a policy address to the Cantigian Press on Tuesday evening. Desperately hungry and thirsty women and children are reportedly clammoring for basic resources, two days after a worldwide weapons sanction was inflicted upon Boliatur's Post-Delegationist Regime. But as women and children die, where are all of the men fleeing to?

Nathan Vanston, the RFO, has alleged that boys and young men are leaving their homes to join militant groups, "who naturally have no shortage of food and clean water".

Devastating famines in the Republic of Kersveld in the last decade saw similar phenomena, when observed at a distance by Cantignia and other powers of the Southern Implarian. Militant groups were known to stockpile food meant for the general populace, leaving said populace in terrible ruin.

"We are witnessing a deliberate genocide in Boliatur," Officer Vanston said, "Chairman Magleis Nodovinya needs not watch his people's feet dangle in the wind; His people are already collapsing in the street by his own perverted design."

Cantignia
Approaching Conflict in Boliatur
Military & Foreign Office Indicate a Steady Coalition Build-up
Dispatched from Vesper, Cantignia on 23 July, 2012

Leading officials from the Grand Force of the Covenant in Vesper strongly suggested Sunday that Cantigian military intervention in Boliatur is slowly developing, as Chief Foreign Officer Harriet Fauconberg told an international press panel that the Covenant was prepared to "inflict a most certain justice" with allied powers against the Mrysini regime.

At a GFC news conference, Lord Admiral Winston Burberry said he had ordered the Pioneer Battlegroup, comprised of an Engellexic model aircraft carrier and accompanying warships, to begin preparing for an extended deployment to the Jade Sea, along with an attached component of 800 Expeditionary Marines. And while he did not rule out other options such as assisting allies in potential missions, he made clear that the Pioneer Battlegroup was "merely probing beyond the Grand Oceanic periphery into rarely explored territory".

Burberry, Lord of the Victorinox Islands and Admiral of the Grand Armada of the Covenant, also noted that the European Conference of Unity Against Terror was playing a large role in the military's planning process and future operations. It is important to note that the Covenant has not drafted a declaration of war, and the Admiral was sure to remind the media that the military was not yet authorized to use armed force in Boliatur.

Asked specifically about establishing a "coalition" with fellow world powers against Boliatur, Lord Burberry said this and other frequently suggested military actions "have serious consequences, which we have deliberated over diligently, and arrived at the conclusion that we must stand united".

"Of course, we also have consider the implication of ongoing interventions, which pit Covenant Forces against other-than-Engellexic ethnicities," Burberry added, eluding to the Kersveld Republic and the division sized element occupying that nation's capital. "It's important to us that we recognize Boliatur as an independent race and governance, and that our opposition purely exists against the standing terrorist regime."

Chief Foreign Officer Harriet Fauconberg spoke in more dramatic terms about prospects for Covenant and world intervention to protect Boliatur from their own government. She warned that Boliatur is at risk of collapsing into an "eternal quagmire of terror" amid food and water scrambles.

"A united European Coalition for Advisory stands above the viper pit which is Mrysini and the Nodovinya Regime," she told an assorted assembly of foreign and domestic journalists. The international community will provide a united military response to the crisis, following our decisive financial and travel sanctions against the radical republic," she said.

West March
House of Marcher Lords Votes Down Boliatur Embargo
Marcher Lords Concerned About "Activist" Foreign Agenda
Dispatched from Cobham, West March on 03 August, 2012

Following acrimonious debate the House of Marcher Lords voted down a resolution calling on the Lord Warden to enact comprehensive sanctions on Boliatur by a slim majority. The Marcher Lords divided with no clear ideological line; Lords known for their liberal sympathies argued eloquently for the West March to take a stand in the name of human dignity, but they were joined by many of most conservative Lords who argued West March must stand with the Mother Country and Cantignia in the name of Imperial unity. But against them were an equally diverse coalition of Lords rallied the Lords Spiritual who argued that the common people of Boliatur must not be made to suffer unduly for the crimes of tyrants. Backing them were many liberal renegades who opposed on principle any undue restrictions on the free flow of commerce and the even larger block of conservatives who were wary of entanglement in "Oriental Affairs".

The debate continued for nearly two hours, finally ending in a thunderous voice vote. The defeat is a major blow for charitable organizations which have lobbied heavily for the Lords to condemn Boliatur, though news of the vote was well received by the Marchers Club which categorically opposes any involvement in the Orient. As for the Lord Warden he has been completely silent on the issue; well placed sources with contacts in the Lords Privy Council say this is because he is extremely wary about offending either the Crown or Cantignia by making a proclamation before the Marcher Lords had spoken. West March has already sanctioned the sales of arms and key war materials like steel, concrete and oil to Boliatur but the government has recently come under pressure from Great Engellex and Cantignia to tighten sanctions further. The sale of grain to Boliatur, which is presently booming, is said to be a particular sore point for Cantignian diplomats.

Now Cobham awaits his words. Whatever he decrees the voice of the Lords, divided it may be, carries great weight in the Grey Tower and many of the charities Imperial Review spoke with were quietly sullen about the chances the Lord Warden will tighten trade restrictions to the extent they had hoped.

West March Seals Wasatch Border
Lord Warden "Deeply concerned" about violence in Wasatch.
Dispatched from Cobham, West March on 09 August, 2012

The Lord Warden of Cobham announced today during an address to the House of Marcher Lords that the nations border with Wasatch "shall be sealed to all traffic, until such a time as order can be restored to Wasatch." The Lord Wardens announcement was well received by the Lords, particularly the Conservatives who have repeatedly expressed concerns about the "southern situation". Among the Lord Spiritual there is said to be discontent however that the Lord Warden did not place greater emphasis on charitable aid for fellow Christians under duress, though they accept the need to uphold the integrity of the nations borders. The Wardens announcement comes on the heels of allegations that contrary to the traditional conventions of war chemical weapons may have been used to quell unrest and amid rumours that deposed dictator Markus Boyack has fled the country for Cantignia.

According to senior civil servants the Royal Border Reivers have been strengthening their presence on the border in anticipation of the closure and it is reportedly being debated both within the Privy council and within the General Staff whether or not the Marcher Corps should be called upon to help strengthen the border. The situation of refugees is also somewhat unclear though the Lord Warden's declaration that West March "Would not allow Terminus Territory to become a foreign battleground" has widely been interpreted as meaning they will be turned away. Lords with interests in the borderlands had been agitating for West March to turn away refugees fearing they will bring criminality, expand the conflict and push down local wages. Local sentiment by most measures is strongly in favour of rejecting all Wasatch refugees, one land owner near the border telling the Review before the address that he was hoping the Lord Warden would act to seal out the "Disaffected negro hordes".

What is clear is that within minutes of the Lord Warden's words the RBR began turning away vehicles at the border. Holders of Wasatch passports are being allowed to cross out of the country, but only after being informed in no uncertain terms they will not be allowed to cross back into West March again. Conversely Marchers were being allowed to re-enter the country but were directed not to come this way again. Some families near the border line are also being temporarily evacuated, necessary said a RBR officer, to protect them should fighting approach from the far side. When queried when they would be allowed to return the officer simply shrugged "whenever they stop shooting down there, I suppose."

Cantignia
The Disputed Champion
Boxing Bout Draws Mass Controversy Down Under
Dispatched from Vesper, West Cantignia on 11 August, 2012

In preparation for the greatest gathering of Imperial, Colonial, and alien athletes of all time - every demographic, former and contemporary, of Engellexic athlete is training to prove themself as the greatest in the world. The Covenant of Cantignia is no exception, and for the last four months athletes in staggering numbers have flocked to Vesper, hoping and praying to be chosen by the Grand Cantigian Athletics Commission for the chance to run, volley, shoot, or fight in Dulwich for the World Exposition of Peace.

Already, world famous tennis superstar Claire Meadows, arguably the most recognizable Cantigian outside of the Engellexic Establishment, has confirmed that she will compete to prove herself as not only a Grand Slam Champion, but as the undisputed Champion of Engellexic Tennis on a grass court. Miss Meadows drew imperial criticism earlier this year when she chose, along with top male player Archie Riddick, to compete in the Zulia-Santander Open - which Engellexic players boycotted on the grounds of principle, when organizers of the Grand Slam refused to recognize the Engellexic Peerage of competing players. Going on to win the Open, Claire Meadows infamously scolded an Engellexic fan, who ran on to the court waving the flag of the Engellexic Empire.

Armed and dangerous, the First Colonial Regiment of Cantignia, which has spent the last century deactivated after a choice service record of prosecuted violence and crimes against humanity, has resurfaced in Montelimar as a personal security detail to the Crimson Queen Alice of Cantignia & Hammersmith. When matters of security are not consuming the First Colonial, it is reported by Valmy journalists that the unit moonlights in open fields and parks, running drills and dry fire missions to redeem their regard as the most trusted colonial cannon unit that it used to be.

Far and beyond the rest however stands the Covenant, Commonwealth, and Colonial Heavyweight Champion of Boxing, Mister Nathaniel Stalworth. Standing at a height of 1.95 meters, and weighing in at 97.5 kilograms, Stalworth has powered through every opponent put before him in a perfect record of 18 wins, 11 knockouts, and 0 losses. Yet, with this undisputed record among the premier divisions of boxing, a single fighter that Stalworth has never faced is standing now to challenge his right to represent Cantignia at the World Exposition.

Torel Green is an Olenasean Boxer, he has what most Cantigians would call 'less-than-white skin', and belongs to a culture his Government still refuses to acknowledge as existent. The 'Other' Fighter weighs 99 kilograms, and towers up to 2.10 meters. And what height and weight Torel Green has over Nathaniel Stalworth, he also believes he has over the White Champion as a boxer in the ring.

"I've fought scores more Olenaseans in the ring than the so-called Champ, and he's fought more white men in the ring than I have, the Other Champ," Torel Green said in a press conference. Torel Green, indeed the undisputed champion of other-than-white divisions of boxing, with a record of 23 wins, 20 knockouts, and 0 losses, has captured the fever pitch which is an Imperial race divide in the Engellexic World.

From his mansion on the outskirts of First Haven, where the Covenant Champion trains in a gym simply called 'The Establishment', Nathaniel Stalworth considers his challenger "not other than, but less-than-white". Stalworth insists that his priority is the World Exposition Boxing Competition, "but if this Other is a bump on my road to Imperial Glory, so be it, I'll remind him exactly where his place in society is," he said, with what many observers are calling tone of anger.

In this showdown, a conflict of race and class struggle, a date, venue, or contract agreement has been yet to be described. Felix Ilchester, former Chancellor and the current Lord of the Wroxter Province, called the prospective bout the "White Stallion versus the Braying Ass," with a finger extended at a sign in the crowd outside of his mansion, which read 'TOREL GREEN - WORLD CHAMP'. Now, the eyes of a nation, the eyes of a racially divided Empire, look to two boxers named Nathaniel Stalworth and Torel Green, respectively, to settle the score as to who is the strongest, the toughest, and the undisputed champion of the Empire Down Under.

West March
Marcher Flying Corps Officially Accepts 200th Aura
Lord Warden Toasts Success of First Domestic Fighter
Dispatched from Cobham, West March on 01 September, 1952

The Marches leading officers and lords gathered in Fort Terminus today to celebrate the roll-out of the 200th Archer-Thorel Aura, the first supersonic fighter aircraft to be designed and produced in the March. Distinguished guests mingled with company managers and engineers on the Tarmac before the roll-out and were treated to a short aerial display - including a hair-raising low altitude overflight - by the famed No. 99 Squadron; flying freshly painted Auras of course. The stars of the pre-show proved to be Archer-Thorels test pilots who captivated the guests with tales of neath-death experiences during the aircraft's development program.

The Lord Warden did not make an appearance until just before the aircraft was towed out from the factory gate, taking his place at the podium just as the band began to play the anthem. The roll out was timed with admiral precision, the pristine new fighter coming to rest in front of the podium just as the band hit the last note and the Lord Warden stepped forward to deliver his address. Pausing for a moment for the applause the Warden began his speech by praising the workers, engineers and test-pilots of Archer-Thorel "with the fruit of your labours the security of the Empire has been enhanced and the prestige of the March has been enhanced immeasurably. None who set eyes on the machine before me can deny we, and by extension the Empire of the Mother-Country, rank among the first tier of industrial powers." He also praised the owners and executives of Archer-Thorel for demonstrating "extraordinary leadership and entrepreneurial ambition, without which such an ambitious program could never have been steered to completion."

During his subsequent address the Air Marchal praised the capabilities of the Aura as the most potent fighter in Occidentia. "History teaches that victory goes to the Army which holds the high ground. The sky is the penultimate high ground and as long as the Marcher Corps holds it we cannot be overcome, even if we were outmatched five-to-one." His speech echoed the consensus of learned observers who posit that for West March, sandwiched between two Republican powers, the supersonic Aura is key to upholding the sanctity of the Marches borders.

That the March has beaten larger Cantignia in the race for jet power (to say nothing of it's neighbors in Borea) is not an insignificant boost to Marcher pride. Increasingly those of a nationalist persuasion point to the Aura as proof West March's industry has emerged from the shadow of Great Engellex and Cantignia, arguing it is no less of an achievement than the Cannie carrier. Tellingly the Marchers Club splashed the Aura across the front page of their weekly newsletter.

DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
UNITED REPUBLIC OF SYLVANIA

The United Republic of Sylvania wishes to express congratulations at this feat of technological and engineering prowess of the West March aircraft industry. However, we must express great disappointment that the West Marcher government and people feel the need to even "posit" that the peaceful government of Sylvania would even think about violating the sanctity of West March's borders simply because West March adheres to a different government ideology. We are also disappointed that the non-imperialist republicanism that Sylvania advocates can even be considered a threat to West March. President Sander Rygaard has made several speeches on the true threats to Republicanism, such as Mezhism, Communism and Anarchist Post Delegationists and though the imperialist tendencies of European Monarchies are frowned upon in this nation, these other ideologies also pose a threat to the Monarchies of this world. We must put aside this thought of Republicanism and Monarchism opposing each other and focus on the destructive ideologies that have consumed and are currently consuming many nations across our planet.

______________________________
VESPER, TUESDAY, 4th SEPTEMBER 2012

THE Engellexic Empire stands stronger, extends farther, and lives at a level of wealth and culture that has never been seen before in Europe. Our fighting men in uniform are armed with the finest weapons, and their training and experience provide for a unified order of marshal justice which, again, represent the mightiest force Europe has ever seen.

A formidable element of Engellexic Military ingenuity, West March has now attained an aeronautic achievement that will surely bring order and discipline to the unruly hordes of the Occident in this tumultuous era. With our own Naval innovations considered, the Grand Covenant is poised to assume its duty to protect Her Majesty the Queen-Empress, the Imperial Peoples & Patriots of Great Engellex, and our most valued cousins of the West march.

A message of congratulations from The Royal Aerospace Society of the High Kingdom of Ivernia

Our society wishes to toast the great achievements by the engineers of West March is the creation of a fully supersonic jet plane. Truly the Archer-Thorel Aura is a mark of innovation and hard work expected of both West March and the Engellexic Empire.
We congratulate the aeronautical engineers responsible for cracking the design of an engine capable of retaining such a powerful thrust to break the drag experienced at 0.82-1.23 Mach and pushing ahead to the future of supersonic-aeronautics. And of course a design to resist the fantastic temperatures our studies suggested.

We are also delighted to announce your design of this supersonic jet fighter has been nominated for the ''Aeronautical Design of the Year'' which is held every November by our society.

We once again toast West March and Great Engellex for the next step in Aerospace!
