From around the world and from within the friendly confines - the field is set for the 85th running of The First Haven Derby, the first of three comprising the 2012 Cantigian Triple Crown. Thousands are expected to turn up in attendance, and millions of interested fans will watch Saturday's match-up of 20 thoroughbred horses at First Haven Racegrounds, in Concordia.
The full field of 20 were entered and placed in their post positions this Saturday for the Derby, and the event will be run for the 85th consecutive year next Saturday with an approximate post of 0530 CST. A crowd in excess of 175,000 will be packed in to the Racegrounds for this crucial first leg of the Triple Crown, which will be seen by millions more during the ITC telecast, and heard over the airwaves of Imperial Review's radio service to the Great Engellexic Empire.
Running alongside these horses are legendary storylines, which will play out on Cantigian racing's greatest stage—whether morning-line favorite 'Redemption' can redeem the Loveguard Family Farm, which has failed to field a winning horse since 1967, or whether foreign favorite 'Catamount' can finally overcome the failures of past horses hailing from the beaches of Monterrey.
Redemption, a colt jockeyed by veteran and past winner Buck Dobbins, fared decently in the draw with post 9. Two-time Derby-winning trainer Calvin Fletcher was hoping to be more toward the inside, but expressed confidence in Redemption's versatility from the middle. Catamount, frequent winner of the Carrera de caballos de San Diego de Alcalá, drew three stalls to the outside of Redemption. With Anglian favorite King & Country in post 10 and Altaisk favorite Fulger in post 11, that leaves four of the race's major contenders right in line.
Charlotte's Favour, a champion in his second year in Great Engellex, will attempt to extend his undefeated streak down under for at least two legs of the Triple Crown, and the third if the first two are won. Meanwhile, prestigious Kong Christian V Steeplechase winner Lynafeld has impressed early track viewers with graceful training jaunts around the grounds, inspiring longshot betters to give Lynafeld a gamblers chance.
"This is the widest pedigree we've ever fielded," Alan Chaungeour, President of the Triple Crown Association said. "If there was ever a fear that the Can-Engellexic reign of glory was over, this is the year a foreign threat could turn that fear in to reality."
