Vangala delays trade deal with Belmont

The signing of a key trade agreement between the Kingdom of Belmont and the People's Republic of Vangala has been postponed after a surprise announcement by the Vangalan Minister for Foreign Trade Biswajit Nandi, who refused to give an explanation for the delay. The deal is estimated to be worth billions to both countries, aiming to increase Vangalan exports to Belmont and encourage Belmontien businesses to invest in Vangala.

Not all the details have been released, although the Chronique Augustine revealed if the deal goes ahead, the Thasisse Agricole Grouppe will lease hi-tech equipment to Vangala's state-run farms and that several Belmontien businesses will open factories in Vangala.

Many believe the postponement is intended to increase pressure on the Belmontien Parliament to approve an aid package to Vangala, with ƒ550 million being proposed to improve the developing country's infrastructure. Vangalan diplomats are reportedly worried that fresh allegations of Vangalan involvement with terrorist groups may negatively influence the vote. Kilkila has also been angered by Paris's tolerance of opposition rallies as well as Belmontien support for South Ratomkira and the Sinhai Union, Vangala's regional rivals.

However, the Foreign Trade Minister later met with the Belmontien Ambassador to give reassurances. Belmontien Finance Minister Ichiro Yamaguchi was also telephoned by Minister Nandi. Sources inside the Vangalan government tell Le Vangale they are optimistic about the trade deal, although also declined to comment on reasons for its hold-up.

The Vangalan community in Belmont is particularly interested in the trade agreement and the implications it has for ties between Belmont and Vangala. Some, including the Vangalan Muslim League, which recently relocated to Orleans, oppose it on the grounds it signals a normalisation in relations and instead want Paris to push more aggressively for democracy in Vangala. Others have welcomed it, hoping friendship between the two countries it will make it easier to establish links with their families and friends back home.

A date for the final decision on the trade agreement has not yet been disclosed.
