The Siege of Banja Luka

With a population of 180.000, Banja Luka is the Capital City of the Federal Republic of Nova Srbja and has served as the economic, political and cultural center of the nation for almost five centuries. Since the 8th of May, 1957, the large urban settlement is besieged by the forces of the self-proclaimed Republic of Novosad, the Novosad Liberation Army. According to reports, the Novosad Liberation Army has employed a sizeable force of 3500 soldiers. The task to defend the city is entrusted to 1100 troops of the Federal Gendarmerie, and a number of civilian volunteers equipped with small arms. The Novosad Liberation Army employs a large number of long-range artillery to constantly shell the city and weaken its defense, as well as destroy its fortifications, before a final attempt to capture the city and break its defenders. In the north-eastern hills of the city, a 600 strong force of the Istokgrad Territorial Militia is engaging separatist positions in a desperate attempt to break the siege and allow the civilian population to escape towards safer areas in the eastern part of the country.

The troops of the Federal Gendarmerie have managed to hold their ground, but their attempts to break the siege have failed and resulted in several casualties. So far the death toll is estimated between 300-600 casualties, mostly civilians, killed by either artillery or sniper fire. The Novosad Liberation Army also employs a squadron of CAS Aircrafts deployed to attack military targets such as weapons and ammunition depots, government buildings and entrenched positions. The largest firefights are occuring in the western and northern sectors of the city where the Novosad Liberation Army has employed T-34 tanks supported by artillery barrages.

((Anyone can join the scenario with either a member of an intelligence agency, a journalist, a diplomat, or a member of a Non-Governmental Organization, In short: anyone except Federal and separatist forces. The character will be free to walk around the city. Keep in mind Banja Luka is a warzone, and there are chances your character might suffer an injury or die should he put himself in clear danger such as running trought an open field in the no man's land. Other than that, i will not deliberately attempt to kill any of the characters. The countries that will get involved must provide a detailed description of their expeditionary force, which must reflect the realistic logistical challenges of deploying military forces in a foreign nation.

Keep in mind Nova Srbja is a poor country. Most of its infrastructures have been damaged, most cities and villages are in ruins. There are no highways and most roads are in horrible conditions, supplies are almost depleted, gas pumps in the theatre of operations have been either plundered by desperate civilians or confiscated by the Federal Gendarmerie to refill power generators scattered around the city, which implies large areas of the city lack electricity and power. The Federal Gendarmerie is mostly employed on the frontline, and only a few men have been tasked to public order duties. As a result, criminal activities such as contraband, black market and gang activity is widespread in most neighborhood except the areas around government and military buildings.))
