Sutherland, Bridgeport, Dockside Exhibition Centre

The whole of the dockside had been taken over by mixer of the C.T.A, National Police and private security which made up a small army. They had closed the roads in a 3 mile area and used empty shipping containers as barriers which were lined up around the outer perimeter of the Exhibition Centre. The Dockside itself was known to host various wine and cocktail bars with many office workers having working lunches in them on Saturday afternoons alongside tourist eating in the small cafes. This is also the first stop for many tourists coming off the ferries and cruise ships since the area was right next to the port, many went straight into the Celtic Museum of Immigration or the overpriced gift shops.

The secondest biggest building the eye could see was the yellow and black striped cranes of Manx Maritime Solutions that toward over its small shipyard. Originally the whole area would have been used for the shipyard in order to create fleets of warships but most of the area was destroyed during the Spring invasion. The area was rebuilt under the JCPOR with tourism in mind and parts of the shipyard that wasn't damaged was refitted to carry out maintenance of small vessels.

Now all of that was shut down, the whole area was empty with only caters inside setting up and small army of security covering the whole area.

With events in Ulster the past year, the Foreign Affairs & Trade Office was taking no chances, it had requested the flagship of the Naval Defence Service to be docked right across the Exhibition Centre alongside hundred sailors for a parade to kick off the conference. Primary this was part of contingency plan if something were to go wrong the delegations would be escort onto the flag ship to be taken away by a helicopter and the NDS had recently repainted the ship so it was good PR to have on the international stage.

Foreign & Trade Secretary Taran Moyle had just arrived to oversee finally preparation he was met by the Chief of Security for the event.

"Afternoon , is everything on schedule?" Taran asked.

"Well everything was until the protesters arrived early." the chief replied

The unification of Eiffelland and Retalia made quite a lot of diplomats jobless, simply because Eiffelland-Retalia did not need two ambassadors in each country. The older diplomats received early retirement, but remained more or less active to represent Eiffelland-Retalia at conferences.

The 60 year old Didier Lafite was such an elder diplomat. Now he led the Eiffelloretalian delegation to the Conference on Maritime Safety and Security. Sitting in Eiffelland-Retalia's newest government plane, an , he flew to Strathclyde for the Conference on Maritime Safety and Security.

The plane model Ibis did not have a really good start, because of a design problem in the battery packs. Those problems were solved quickly and swiftly already in 2019. The plane was safe to fly again. The government of Eiffelland-Retalia was one of the first customers, partly as marketing act for the Eiffelloretalian aircraft industry.

The plane touched down on Bridgeport's airport. Lafite and his team left the plane, after which they were transported to the Dockside Exhibition Centre, where the conference would take place.

Foreign Minister Robert Hamilton looked out the window of his plane as it arrived at Bridgeport's airport, pondering how fruitful this conference would actually be. Part of him regretted stating he would personally attend, after all there were surely other matters of greater importance than an international conference on maritime safety. Indeed, his aides had urged him not to go and to instead send a delegation headed by one of the ministry's bevy of experienced diplomats. Hamilton, however, was not one to go back on his word and he also welcomed an opportunity to partake in Manx cuisine and hospitality.

As the plan touched down Hamilton, not a spring chicken at the tender age of 71, gathered his briefing books and headed to the nearest exit of the plane where he would be joined by other members of the Eserian delegation. A long time diplomat, having served in Eserland's diplomatic corps since the late 1980s, the white haired and balding foreign minister was used to keeping up appearances as he was met by a small pool of press outside the plane as he walked down the stairs and into a black limousine flying the Eserian flag. The car speeded off toward the waterfront, where delegations from the other participating nations were gathering at the Dockside Exhibition Centre waiting for the conference to begin in earnest.

Hamilton looked forward to some mingling, he could certainly use a drink or two after the short plane ride had been rocked by some turbulence over the Engelsea. And of course it was also good to get to know the other delegations better, after all learning what the other nations are seeking to get out of the conference would be very useful information to have going forward. His thoughts trailed off as his limousine sped along the highway toward the conference.

Ralf Declerq was a typical diplomat of Overseas Relations and Cooperation Nedernesia, that is he was middle aged with years of relevant private sector experience topped up with the requisite diplomatic training from the ministry before officially commencing service. As per standard Nedernesian government procedure he was also paid very well in order to prevent the private sector from grabbing him back, plus well paid government employees were more difficult to bribe. His twenty years working for Occidental Overseas Container Line (OOCL), the massive Nedernesian commercial shipping line visible in nearly every habour on earth, made him the most logical choice for this meeting.

Unlike the other attendees, Ralf was able to arrive by sea on a NedFerries ship. The overnight journey from Vrijpoort was pleasant enough. An executive cabin had been booked for him complete with private shower and toilet. He had enjoyed a few drinks at one of the bars with some live music before spending a good chunk of the night in the onboard casino playing blackjack and chatting with the other guests. A few hours of sleep and a buffet breakfast later and he could see the coast of Strathclyde and the skyline of Bridgeport. Not a bad way to spend ten hours if you weren't in a rush.

After docking a car from the Royal Nedernesian Consulate picked Ralf up and drove him to the convention centre. There was no need for body guards as Ralf was an unknown 'backofficd' diplomat not known outside of diplomatic and shipping circles. He was quite looking forward to the next few days and hoped the ideas shared would help in some small way make the seas safer, so long as they could remain profitable for Nedernesian companies.
