From Company to Responsibility by Octavia Murillo. In her recent book, the Natalian historian Octavia Murillo builds a comparison between the administration of the Sollegan North Occidentian Company, which has been the main catalyst of the colonization of Natal and its administration for quite a long time, and the birth of the Occidental Republic of Natal, as an independent state. She analyses the differences between the two styles of governance from the points of view of the natives living in Natal, the way it company rule affected the colonists too and how society was moulded by it.

Fiction

Callao Teeter, by Samuel Carballal. Set in the city of Callao in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Callao Teeter follows the lives of the lieutenants of Damián Lacasa, one of Natal's cruellest gangsters. Caught between a political thriller and a police novel but with a twist as the point of view is that of the criminals, not the authorities, Callao Teeter builds up on the legend of Damián Lacasa and the war he waged against other gangs but also against the authorities, all during the backdrop of the peace and love Aquarian movement.

Non-Fiction: Red liberators by Magnus Herzberg
Original title: Rote Befreier. This book describes a turbulent phase in Eiffelland's history: The terror of the Rote Befreiungsarmee. Or better said: The terror of the Rote Befreiungsarmees. There were two of them. After the members of the first one had been arrested and convicted, the second one announced itself with a hi-jacking and the murders of prominent banker Oscar Fuger and Minister of Economic Affairs Dieter Kretschmar. Almost all members of the Neue Rote Befreiungsarmees were caught, but some escaped. Where are they? And what is the role of former Chancellor Horst Jörgens, who disappeared in the beginning of 2010? Herzberg also gives some interesting views on the collective suicide of the old Rote Befreiungsarmees.

Fiction: Shadow boy by Mirko Fischer
Original title: Schattenjunge. A man in his fifties returns to the village where he grew up, in the wetlands of Emsland, to attend his mother's funeral. He left the village more than 30 years ago, upon entering society service, and never came back. During his stay in the village, he has to face his youth. Always subject to bullying, both by his brothers and by the people in the village, his youth mainly consisted of hiding, or staying in the shadow. There was one person though whom he wanted to see again, but that person left the village as well. After the funeral, the man starts to seek.

Non-Fiction: Bombers Over Ice and Snow by Morten Strandberg
The story of the 12 Gutnish bombers that chase the Austwegian Post-Delegationist Destroyer Nordstjerne during the 1918 Civil War. A look into all the pilots who fought daringly against one ship, and the captain who refused to let his ship sink. This small battle did not have the most meaningful impact in the civil war, but it did inspire what would become the modern Free Navy.

Fiction: Dark by Erika Normann
Following young 12 year old Gro who loves to play in the forest, she observes a violent murder that forces her to go on the run when she is caught. Traveling in the dark of winter, she must make it to the far northern town of Foss where her grandmother lives with only the company of her dog Oskar, braving the elements and the fear of those who chase her.

Non-Fiction: My Odyssey by Augusto José Constanza
Original Title: Mi Odisea
Considered essential reading in San José, this is the official autobiography of the first President of San José, Augusto José Constanza, detailing his life before he would lead the Collectivist Revolution of 1950. The recounting includes his journey through the Grand Archipelagic Republic with his best friend Pedro de Montoya on their old, reliable motorcycle, observing the inequality and corruption throughout the archipelago that would later inspire Constanza into taking part in a revolution. Along the way, he would meet and fall in love with his future wife, Maria Fernández Castillo, who'd further inspire him to think of the future rather than focus on the present, and beget his son and the current president of San José, José David Constanza.

Fiction: Open Blue by Carlos Alonso
Original Title: Abierto Azul
A swashbuckling epic that inspired six sequels and plans for a movie series to be produced in San José, this historical-fiction romp through the Azure Sea follows the exploits of Don Franscisco de Montoya during the late 17th century, a dashing nobleman who enlists in the Navy of the Knights of St. Joseph and falls in love with the beautiful Engellish pirate Jessica Spade. Together they rebel against the oppressive Sollégan colonial forces and their lackeys in the Knights and fight for the freedom of the people through daring raids of colonial territories. Along the way, they begin to uncover rumors of a plot of supernatural origins stretching back to the days of the Tiburan Empire, which will unfold in sequels to the original story.
