It all began with a bang —a thread on piracy in the Gothic Sea

The Gothic Sea had become a dangerous place in the minds of international readers. Pirates roamed the sea freely pillaging and plundering ships on the water, but in truth the vast majority of ships past through unencumbered. Most vessels attacked were small fishing boats for the shock value in a variety of countries, but the real targets had been largely automated container ships. The results of which had forced neighboring countries to start escorting their more valuable ships.

What made this difficult was that it had become quite obvious who was doing the piracy. It was not hard to see what kind of ships uniquely belonged to the Navies of Gutarike and Lethonia. That said, the Lethonian Navy was small and largely bottled up. Gutarike on the other hand had everything from stealthy corvettes to immensely quiet submarines. These submarines in fact shadowing piracy campaigns waiting to immediate return torpedo fire upon any surface ship that dared to attack a pirate ship. So far, this hadn't needed to happen. The Gutnish pirates focused their efforts on ships without escorts and on ships that would not cause too great of a stir. The media uproar was bigger than the profits, but the rather profound impact on the world economy was interesting. In truth, this was Gutnish and Lethonian naval ships gone rogue, and the governments not having much control on the matter. In port, they represented the navy. At sea, these navies did what they wanted.

They did adhere to government recommendations though, and after a few hijackings of Tarusan vessels, they were asked to avoid Tarusan flagged ships... so they did with the promise of assistance from the Tarusans if necessary.

This time, a small Gutnish corvette with stealth panelling sailed towards a flagged ship from Ostmark. The act was simple. Raise a red flagged Jolly Roger when in gun range and issue a demand to surrender the vessel or have the vessel sunk. Delay? Sink them. Radio for help? Sink them. This was considered an easier target. No other vessels were noticed in the area and it was believed to be a fairly rich looking yacht from the mid-century...

The corvette, which had its name and numbers scrubbed off issued its demand to the Ostmarker vessel. No reply came, but something strange happened, the flag of Ostmark came down immediately as quickly as their red Jolly Roger went up. Up came a Metsamaan black cross... or was it considered the Hansa now? This was curious and the crew did not know what to do. To approach? Fire? Or retreat? The Gutnish captain wasn't sure himself. Was this a ploy to get them to reconsider their attack? Or was this a trap? The behavior was too suspicious... the captain ordered to have the yacht sunk.

The stage was set as the pirate ship began to fire upon the bait laid by the Handelsmarine which held a submarine in the waiting. U-34 sat nearby, and readied her torpedoes. A nod was given from the captain signaling the order to fire, and two torpedoes were underway. "Mark!" was said to denote a clock being set to counter the time waiting for detention of the torpedo. This was an especially risky time as well as the U-34 crew had to hope that their firing of the torpedo was not heard. They ultimately hoped that the noise from the firing would make it difficult to notice their noise. Either way, with what seemed to be an eternity, an explosion was heard.

U-34 had to leave the area and hope that their target sank. They would slowly move eastward towards Ostmark and the Tarusan islands in hopes of running into fewer pirates in that general direction, but also be able to surface without immediately attracting fire.

Unbeknownst to U-34 was that their attack was a total success. The small Gutnish corvette could not withstand such a torpedo blast. Unfortunately for U-34 and the Hanseatic Republics, the news of how trap unfolded was communicated on an open channel. The entire world now knew of the trap that was set.

Rikord Archipelago

The increased presence of the Imperial Navy in the Gothic Sea had been good for the appearance of deterrence of pirate activity while in actuality doing nothing except ensuring the deal had been kept for the protection of the empires shipping. The abnormal amount of warcraft in the sea did allow a greater amount of ears and eyes to keep tabs on the events. The audible accoustic sounds of the explosion rippled thru the water, something was going on. The sound was later confirmed by the open channel broadcast, someone had struck back on the pirating vessels. The Corvette Delfin quick on communicating with command when a submarine had surfaced east of the archipelago, its avenue of travel had come from the same direction that the sinking ship had only earlier been detected. The order was clear, kill it.

With furor the corvette engaged, with two torpedoes launched from the tubes on the deck. They raced thru the water at the unsuspecting submarine, to deliver upon it a fate similar to its victim earlier. There would be no celebration, they would never know they had succeeded, they would meet their demise in a watery grave.
