Mederith Dean, was waiting in front of the precinct along New Street, a small alley connecting the seafront Wakerley Road to Coogee Street, resting on the green-white police car. She took off the dark green jacket of the CHPS, the Central Himyari Police Service, showing the white shirt, dark green tie, and dark green trousers. She looked at the clock, showing only half past ten in the morning, but the sun was already shining over the street and the car, making the green paint hot to the touch. The strong smells of the huge city of Harton, mainly the smell of car exhausts, was mixed with the salty breeze of the Indala Sea and with a strong smell a petrichor. It will rain soon, she thought. Some clouds were on the horizon, inland, but too far away. The haze of the city, mixed with the sweltering heat, was turning the sky to a whitish blue.
"You took your time," she said, as she saw Drew Stone coming out of the precinct, with a uniform like hers. "Transferred back into the criminal investigation division, got my partner back aaaaand managed to speak with Captain Muzenda and the higher ups to transfer Spencer to us," he said smiling. After the Loago episode, in which he worked as a liaison between the DER and the anti-League of Communist groups and then as a communications officer within the NEAC, the Natalian Expeditionary Army Corps. After he returned, he worked for a period in the Rural Police department, hoping to find some post-war peace and quiet and was partnered with Spencer Williams, a cadet who was just starting and was assigned to the rural division. Now, missing the city, he managed to solve his transfer back and aided Spencer too in moving him into the city.
"There are some new developments too," he said as the two went into the car and she started the engine and the AC to cool out the air. "What now?" she asked a bit irked. "You know 'bout the whole kak with the NRA becoming the Himyari People's Union and declaring war to everyone and all that opfok, eh? Well, as much as Ross went to the press go tell how its just tall talking, he did put the secret services on high alert. Both the DER and the DIR. And should anything happen, we will cooperate with them," he said looking outside the window, waiting to see her reaction. "I do wonder if with all this, we will end up doing some good ole' classical police work," she said annoyed slapping the steering wheel. "I will really get mad if somehow, because of Nedernesian, Tyskonian or Pelasgian colonialism, we will end up suffering..." she muttered. "I don't think so, but it's best to be prepared for anything..." he said with a tender tone, trying to calm her. Meredith lost her sister in the terrorist attack orchestrated by the Rhinos two years ago, the idea that a different group could organise the same type of attacks, enraged her. "Where must we go?" asked Drew to change the subject and help keep her focused on the job.
"Heh, your good old drug dealing chommie," she said smirking. "Ah, the boss lady," he said too, this time laughing. The car did a three way turn on New Street and after waiting on the red light, took a right turn on Wakerley Road. Even during the week, the golden sands of the beaches were fully covered by people sunbathing in the morning and the late afternoons, while the whitewashed apartment blocks on the other side of the road reflected the sun light. The boulevard was aligned with three rows of palm trees, two along the end sides and another in the middle between the two driving ways. With three lanes for each direction and a bus one, Wakerley Road was probably the biggest inner city boulevard in Himyar, going straight along the seafront for about 45 kilometres, providing a main north-south axis through the city. After a few intersections, the car went on the 2nd exit of a roundabout, on Primula Road, towards the National Square where the Combs House and the Federal Palace were situated, but after a small intersection, Mederith went on a small lane and stopped the car there. Right above them was a small sign showing the name of the street, "Nana Sita Lane" but underneath her, a small sticker "Mental Relaxation", meant that around there was one of the Himyari famous dens of Zandile Nozulu's Establishments of Mental Relaxation. Meredith and Drew like most if not all of the police of the Greater Harton Area knew who Zandile Nozulu was, but there was a collusion between her and the authorities. She was considered trustworthy. If she kept her eyes open on her competition and snitch them to the police, the police would be lenient on her, provided that she doesn't flood the market with all sorts of drugs.
"Dumela, ma," said Meredith as she knocked a few times on a small decorated but worn out wooden door and entered without being invited in. Drew followed her closely. "Dumela, ma, ra," said a man that was sitting at a small desk near the entry. "The gogo is further inside," he said with a grave voice. The two went through a small hall, until a familiar voice started yelling at them. "Bas, there you were! Why do I always have you wait so long for the coppers to come?!" shouted Zandile Nozulu as she saw Drew and Meredith. The Loda woman, of traditional, heavy build, was wearing an orange dress that had some fresh blood stains smeared on it. Drew immediately observed that she was carrying a baseball bat. "What happened, ma?" asked Meredith, trying to calm her down. "Some doos tried to rape one of my girls, that's what happened. He tried to rape her, she fought back, he started beating her and I had to calm him down. With my friend here!" she said angrily while waving her baseball bat. "Where the girl? The aggressor?!" asked Meredith agitated.
Zandile led them to one of the rooms, in which the man, who was visibly beaten up, was tied to a chair. "And the girl?" asked Meredith. Zendile showed her into a room in which the sex worker was lying down, on a bed. She had a blood lip, a visibly broken nose and a black eye. The state of the room was horrendous and the bed was bogging. Meredith tried to sooth her, but she was visibly too disgusted to sit on that bed. "You should call the ambulance of both of them," she said to Zandile. "Oh yeah, and what do you want me to say? Oh hiya, I have a prostitute here that was nearly raped, and beaten up and I need an ambulance for her an the cunt that assaulted her, because I had my friend nearby and broke him a few ribs too in the process?!" asked Zandile annoyed with an angry tone. "Do you even think, ma?!" she shouted again. "Ok, calm down, why did you call us and not the normal police? You should have just reported that you witnessed a rape and the police would have left you alone but dealt with him," said Meredith. "The number you called on was specifically given to you because of our partnership. Like you call that number when you have some tips for the anti-drug division, or you know that there will be some form of imminent crime ready to happen, not because your... workers are attacked by some redneck hick!" said Meredith. While she was trying to be calm at first, she started shouting back at her.
Drew decided to intervene there. "We'll follow the procedure. You can't simply try to hide a whole assault episode. Meredith, call an ambulance," he said pointing at her. Zandile tried to protest but he quickly shut her up. "You will simply write in a statement that she was working on the street and was attacked by him, so you jumped to aid her. And for him, we will take care so that he writes the same statement and that's fucking it. Fuck's sake..." he said, sighing at the end.
As the ambulance and then another police car came in a few minutes, Meredith went outside to smoke a cigarette. "Heh, you said you wanted a return to the good old days. Here we are, eh?" Drew said laughing as he came out for some fresh air and joined her.

Roger Bellevoix had lived in Harton since 1998, when he had followed his wife from University in Villesen to the Natalian savanna to study the proud lions in the wild. Though that relationship had ended rather spectacularly when he had discovered her in bed with her cousin, he had continued to live in the country. Albeit in less rustic surroundings. Life had taken many turns along the way and he had ended up caught up in the smuggling scene, of which Natal was especially famous for. The old friends in Villesen were absolutely in love with the furs and pelts of the gorgeous animals and he had become somewhat of a dealer in exotic goods.
This in turn, had robbed him of any trace of Serazinist ideology, and he quite shamefully enjoyed the life of a fairly (by comparison) bourgeoisie baron in the outskirts of Harton. Though, lately, his mind had been rather occupied by the affairs of his heart than anything else. His beloved, the delicious rotund, his Amazon Noir, Maman Zandile had absolutely stopped taking his phonecalls. She was giving him the cold shoulder. He had decided he would go and pay her a visit.
