Cardinal Pierre-Alexandre Dubois Relaxes Press Censorship
In the spirit of modernity and in reflection of neighboring national policies press freedoms have been expanded while the King is rumored senile

The Kingdom was shocked with abrupt and sudden news that press reform had been decreed and approved by the Crown. Cardinal Pierre-Alexandre Dubois announced it late Friday evening, hailing it as reform that was necessary for keeping up with neighboring freedoms and liberties that would steal men of great science with the allure of additional freedoms. This did not come without detractors however as conservative voices believe the decision was made without the consent of King Frédéric III who is largely seen as senile in his late age of 96 years old.

News travelled quickly to Crown Prince Philippe who as tradition has often dictated is currently serving in place of the King in the Germanian Kingdom of Saxe-Holstonia across the fjord. The Crown Prince has immediately left his post in the wealthy merchant city of Saksborg and will return to Le Vieux Bourg to try to wield whatever influence he might be able to muster. Yet this could prove problematic for him as he has been away from the Royal Court for so long. The Kingdom of Saxe-Holstonia has been left in the care of his daughter, Béatrice.

It is thought that the Crown Prince will seek to take on the role of Crown Regent while is father is potentially incapacitated, but the mental condition of King Frédéric III is difficult to assess. He is seen as combative, narcissistic, and confident, but somehow still utterly confused as to who he is meeting or where he is at times. It may be difficult for Crown Prince Phillipe to find any space in a Royal Court which may not be interested in his meddling at this point. Phillipe himself is 68 and seen as out of touch with the elite of Le Vieux Bourg.

The Cardinal himself who has aided the King for seventeen years now, has often been disliked by many of the Royal Court but has been upheld as the Cardinal of the People. This reputation has given him a lot of sway as far as public opinion goes and rightfully could be seen as of key importance in the maintenance of order in the Petits-Pays during the Great War compared to the civil disarray seen in many other nations during the conflict. His ability to hold the nation together has earned him great respect from the King despite their frequent ideological differences early on.

Press Freedoms granted now include the ability to write critically about the monarchy and the government. In the past these were not allowed and to be printed more liberal thinkers would have to travel to Vrijpoort and distribute radical ideas in secret. It is expected that this new freedom will have to be utilized responsibly as the Crown will not free prior violators of the censorship laws and the fines for certain violations of censorship, mainly gossip involving the crown have not been removed.

Either way, the news came as a shock to the Estates General which was only granted permanence in 1880 with the Liberal and Labour Parties erupting in cheers, while Conservative and Agrarian Parties sat stunned in silence. The question remains to see how this will be seen by the more conservative elements of society such as the police and army. Unless more is known, the policy can only be seen as something in which to be tested in which to see what can be tolerated by the Crown and what if any role the current Liberal Party governed Estates General shall play in its administration.

They Will Bend the Knee!
King Frédéric III goes on the attack against his enemies in agitated rant in court this afternoon

A nation went into collective shock as a profane and aggressive King went into a rage in front of all his guests when his son, le Dauphin, or Crown Prince Phillipe was addressing him about the recent controversial policy on press freedoms. The King’s rant showcased his now volatile mood in his elderly age. The profanity shocked his guests, but also the ambassadors who are often present in his Royal Court. He aggressively tore into family matters accusing the Crown Prince of sodomy and homosexual behavior.

King Frédéric did not stop his rant there. He suggested that his son, “join the sodomites of Auraria and enjoy their local butt fascinations that if they did not have they’d maybe have won the war! All it takes is the man in front to turn tail and the rest will follow that ass.” The particular colorful commentary had the Ambassador of Auraria storm out of the Royal Court, but he would not be the only one. The King would accuse the Engells of Satanism, the Jutes of sheep shagging, and the Eserlanders as lazy. He yelled to everyone there, “you will bend the knee! Just as all of our neighbors have!” The Royal Court would produce apologies to all the parties offended in a two to three page letter highlighting the good relations and good histories of the Petits-Pays and the offended party.

The letter itself suggested the King suffered from an imbalance of humors. This was shocking in itself because humorism has not been seen as a serious medical theory in over fifty years. The fact it was included in the letter showed the particular age of the King and the particular disjointed state of reality that the Royal Court currently exists in. The King is still living in 1840, while his citizenry is currently in 1920. The explosion if anything showcased the importance of having Cardinal Dubois running the general affairs of the Crown.

While little thought has been provided to many of the King’s attacks, the greatest question was to what degree of truth lay in the accusations of homosexuality in the King’s son. While the Crown Prince can no longer be considered a boy in his old age of 68, he only had two children, his eldest the Princess Béatrice who is 34 and his son Charles which is 30. Phillipe’s disinterest in children and late age in which he both got married and had children now look ever the more peculiar. Furthermore his relationship to the Knights in Josepania suddenly may be seen in a different light. It was Phillipe which enlisted the Knights in the Great War, and he spent a great deal of the war living there as personal liaison between the Armies.

The Clermont Papacy and Pope François II has immediately condemned the thought of a homosexual King of the Petits-Pays, and the advanced age of Phillipe has given rumor to him being skipped in the succession. This idea have given rise to another problem. Phillipe himself is a well qualified ruler. Well educated and articulate, skipping him and promoting his son Charles would be a potential disaster. Charles while 30 years of age, is also known as a failure. He has had little care for stately affairs and spends most of his time locked in his room where he is known to tinker with matchstick models and toys. When not doing that he spends time in the vineyards painting. Thus to skip Phillipe may place an incompetent on the throne immediately.

As a result, there has been a desire to change the laws to allow for the Princess Béatrice to ascend to the throne by many parties, but the King does not want to break tradition, and the Clermont Papacy would also find it in error. The Cardinal Dubois himself stating that never would he allow for the laws to be changed because the public lacks faith in young Charles. “I cannot find any good reason in which to change the law unless Charles should find himself a most unbecoming early passing.” With current laws, Charles who is wed to the Princess Louise with no children, would find the crown passing to most probably his cousin, Louis.

The Knights of St. Joseph and Knight Ambassador Gilles Bellefeuille have graciously accepted the apologies from the Royal Court regarding His Majesty's recent regrettable behavior, and indeed acknowledge the ties that have been further strengthened through the acknowledgement of His Holiness' Pope François II supremacy over the One True Faith, acceptance of Liberationism as a legitimate interpretation of the Savior's work and love for the poor, and the bonds of brothers-in-arms on the field of combat.

However, we must take strong exception and will lodge a vehement protest to the Royal Ambassador from @Petits-Pays over the implication via Le Temps that the allegations of homosexuality of His Highness, Crown Prince Phillipe was a factor, if not the primary factor, behind the Lands of St. Joseph joining the Great War. Such a baseless implication worthy only of gossip rags is an insult to the memory of the late Grand Master Raphael de Paule, who was the primary liason with le Dauphin, and surely walks in the holy light of the Liberator after his successful leadership of the defenses during the Siege of Acre, which saw him and many other fellow Knights and people of the Lands of St. Joseph perish, saving many more lives and preserving the territorial integrity and strength of Josepania. His death was not in vain, and we will not tolerate any effort, however indirect or implied, to slander or besmirch his legacy.

We therefore demand through His Excellency the ambassador that an apology and retraction of this baseless speculation by Le Temps be sent post-haste. It is, furthermore, regrettable that we had previously regarded Le Temps as a worthy newspaper dedicated to spreading the truth without reservation. We now wonder if they take advantage of the generosity announced by His Eminence Cardinal Pierre-Alexandre Dubois in relaxing press censorship, resorting to ridiculous rumors and gossip reserved amongst old women.

We remain, Brothers and Sisters in Christ the Liberator,
Knight Chancellor Orlando Blanco
Knight Commander of Foreign Affairs

We Are Innocent!
In a victory for the new press laws, the Crown’s fine for exploitive gossip printed in Le Temps was dismissed citing a lack of proof

Based upon the complaints issued by Knight Chancellor Orlando Blanco, of the Most Serene Order of Knights of the Lands of Saint Joseph, and the recommendation of the Crown, a fine of 1,000 Écu was levied against Le Temps on the basis of hostile gossip written against the Crown. Le Temps refused to pay the fine citing no quantifiable proof of false gossip being spread by the paper and so the case went to court. On the basis of two elements, the fact that the events described by the article actually took place in the Royal Court and that the speculation was based simply upon the consequences of this event, the Judge Millerand ruled in favor of the accused.

Judge Millerand ruled that the new free press laws gave Le Temps the freedom to write on the events and speculate the consequences of those events. With the testimony of more than twenty (20) witnesses of the events in the Royal Court that inspired the article, They Will Bend the Knee! the Judge saw it fit to determine that there was no false gossip speculated in the article and instead the natural tendency for humanity to draw conclusions to events allowed for the contents of the article. Judge Millerand also determined that nothing profane written in the article was anything worse than current gossip as suggested by the same witnesses.

The argument for the Crown was to suggest that speculative conclusions could not be written about the Royals without further more proof and sources. Refusing to unveil their sources as is the right of Le Temps, the witnesses brought forth were seen as more than satisfactory by Judge Millerand. The Crown further argued that the rumors on the street were not fit for print, but the Judge ruled that these were not street rumors due to the explosion of the King’s temper that made it newsworthy.

Winning the case, Le Temps made a proper stand for the new free press laws and further defined what is legal for print in the Petits-Pays. The ruling also suggested that it was possible to see the Petits-Pays as now open to some of the freedoms now seen in its neighbors such as Auraria or Eiffelland. Cardinal Dubois himself adding afterwards, “The court’s ruling is fair and the Crown expects the guidelines drawn by the court to be maintained strictly as unfounded gossip will continue to be penalized by the Crown. The Crown is however pleased that there is continued proof in the rule of law in the Petits-Pays, and that the social contract and privileges given to its subjects are taken seriously.”

The Knights of St. Joseph wish to express their profound disappointment in the failure of Judge Millerand to acknowledge what the Crown and all with clear heads and impeccable morals can see plainly: the perpetuation of malicious and slanderous gossip that brings nothing but humiliation to the Royals that so generously gave Le Temps the freedom from censorship, and the straining of otherwise good relations with the international community, in this particular case the Lands of St. Joseph. We are nonetheless grateful for the efforts of the Crown to protect the honor of @Petits-Pays and the good relations with the Knights, and we will keep this in mind for the days to come.

Air Travel to the Boches!
Compagnie royale d'aviation begins historic new flights to Eiffelland changing travel times forever
(Picture: An F.60 Goliath air taxi at Orly air field)

The future transit time to all major Eiffellander cities from Le Vieux-Bourg has halved if not more as the Compagnie royal d’aviation (CRA) or “Air Royale” as it has been nicknamed, began flights to Eiffelland today. Before travel was limited to within the realm, but this new expansion of lines marks a new era for passenger travel. The very new company which also begins flights to Vrijpoort next week has declared itself the future of travel, now possible today. The air company which refers to its planes as air taxis has taken former bombers for the war and changed their purpose for peaceful reasons.

It is the hope of air royale to continue traffic to as far the Lands of Saint-Joseph with stops in Remion in the future. Competition will be stiff as rival air companies will continue to appear. Aéropostale which already does air mail across Europe using former fighter and scout aircraft, has suggested that we will see Aérotaxi before the year ends with an emphasis on travel towards Auraria and Cathiopia. Additionally, Compagnie générale transaérienne (CGT) plans to use a similar planes to start flights next month to Engellex and Jutegn.

The age of flight is upon us, as Air Royale’s operations have drawn huge crowds to Orly Air Fields, which are located outside of the capital city Le Vieux-Bourg. Orly Air Fields which has been home to the Chouette Flight School and Fighter Squadron for the Army of the Air has historically also offered balloonists or aeronauts a port for travel. Ballooning has been both a hobbyist and legitimate means of transportation for decades.

There is a legitimate worry that this new era of flight will challenge more traditional and proven methods, but not everyone shares such worries. Air Royale obviously comes with some support from the Crown, and additional support from Vrijpoort’s business class, but balloonists can still operate via private persons and with a certain degree of honesty and personality that these larger companies do not offer. Knowing a pilot enlisted in a company is quite different than knowing a balloonist.

Either way, the dawn of a new age is upon us and is possible for around 100 Écu depending on the flight route.

Also we look forward to the air age. The Eiffellandian airliner Luftfahrt Eiffelland is setting its steps in this new era as well. Soon it will extend its services to cities in les Petits-Pays as well, like it already provides services to Vrijpoort and Wien, as well as cities in Sachsen-Holstein and Salen.

would like to point the attention of Air Royale to its civil aeroplanes. Especially the zeppelins may interest you, because they make non-stop transthaumantic flights possible. Due to stringent safety regulations in Eiffelland, hydrogen is not allowed to fill zeppelins. Of course that makes the use of zeppelins more expensive, but hydrogen is really not safe for use in passenger aircraft. But of course Darner produces other planes as well. Its newest plane can fly over a distance of up to 3000 km.
