Duchess addresses Senate, lays out new foreign policy

Chagny

Grand Duchess Mireille addressed the Senate in Chagny yesterday. Her topic was the foreign policy of Bourgogne in Gallia and Germania in the months and years after the Seven Days War.

Excerpt: "For a long time it seemed Bourgogne was half in and half out, in Trier, in Trivodnia. Much has changed since the war to the east and we must go forward looking to build new relationships with new partners. To the south, the states around the Retalian Sea continue to strive to find some kind of order, especially Eiffelland and Serenierre. To the north, there is the Council of the North. To the west is Engellex and beyond Westernesse. Where do we turn?

"One might say the natural choice is to follow our sister monarchy Elben and seek entrance into the Council of the North. That is something we shall pursue and in due course will lay before the Senate for its consideration. We will also seek to strengthen ties to our brethren in Gallia for Bourgogne must never forget its heritage...

"In the meantime, we will continue the reforms of our illustrious predecessor of blessed memory to ensure that the armed forces of Bourgogne remain strong so that those who would wish the grand duchy harm will think twice. We will work with our brothers in Elben to forge new and stronger ties going forward...

"In conclusion, for my own part, I call upon all of you, in this chamber and across Bourgogne, to put aside factional differences and look to the ties that bind us together under God."

It is regrettable that Bourgogne has failed to provide any humanitarian aid to the honorable peoples of Occitania. Shame!

The recent turn of events in Bourgogne are most concerning and we are wholly opposed to the imposition of the problematic Elben royal family to the grand ducal farce. We believe it is essential that Crown Princess Mireille must renounce ANY claim to the throne of Serenierre, which was rightfully toppled in 1927.

Detalls of incident in Retalian Sea remain unclear

Trier

Details of the incident that has recently occurred at what is known as the Retalian Gate, the main route into the Retalian Sea, remain few and conflicted. What is known is that a Serenian flagged cargo vessel was rammed by another vessel, its origin unknown. There are reports of speedboats on the scene and a submarine of the Pohjanmaa Free Navy as well. A destroyer and other vessels of the Eiffellander Navy responded with force described as "disproportionate" against the speedboats.

Sources familiar with Eiffellander affairs have noted that increased tensions with Serenierre over what Serenierre alleges as Eiffellander restrictions to free passage through the Retalian Sea may have caused Eiffellander commanders to adopt loose rules of engagement for self defense.

Mireille visits Senate leaders, discusses domestic agenda

Chagny

Meeting senior members of the Senate yesterday, Grand Duchess Mireille laid out her domestic agenda. Her points included efforts to reduce the costs associated with having a family, continuing to build a partnership between Bourgogne's faith communities and the government, and ensuring that military reforms are successful in the wake of the Seven Days War last year.

The grand duchess, accompanied by her husband, met in private where her agenda was discussed and she and the leaders had a frank and honest discussion. A spokesman indicated that this and other meetings are not only for discussion, but are to serve as trust building measures as Mireille continues to firm up support.

The spokesman noted that the members of the leadership were eager to learn more about the grand duchess' reforms in the wake of the recent Retalian Sea incident involving Bourgogne's near neighbors Serenierre and Eiffelland.

Grand Duchess Mireille to meet Duke of Choiseul, board of Society

Chagny

The grand duchess will be meeting today with the duke of Choiseul and other members of the board of the Society for the Restoration of the Monarchy at the society's home at Club des Royaumes. The late morning meeting followed by a working luncheon is another stop for the grand duchess as she continues to build support for her agenda. Her husband, Crown Prince Leopold of Elben, is not expected to accompany her to today's meetings.

The society, the association of Serenien emigres in Bourgogne, is widely respected by members of the Burgundian aristocracy and court watchers say its formal acceptance of Mireille as its chosen claimant to the Serenien throne would do much to strengthen her own position as grand duchess.

COMMISSARIAT FOR EXTERNAL RELATIONS
The efforts on part of the nascent royal family of Elben to set the region of Gallia on fire will not be tolerated. The treacherous conduct of the Valvoisette clan is most known and they have clawed their way into the boudoir of the Crown Prince of Elben and now have, by sheer accident of fate, become poised to destroy Gallia.

His Excellency, the late Grand Duke of Bourgogne, was wise in his decision to hold his supposed claim to the toppled throne in abeyance. The Serenien Government calls on Crown Princess of Elben to focus on her husband's titles and let history dictate the status of her own supposed claims.

Society for the Restoration of the Monarchy
The Society at this time has no comment with respect to the Valvoisette line's claim to the throne of Serenierre. Our genealogical archivist is researching the matter and we shall officially deliberate on the matter after his findings.

While I was never much of a Royalist, I think the Crown Princess of Elben will prove to be an interesting personality to cover. Although, I do feel split. As a pureblood Serenien patriot, I detest her mission and what she stands for. But as a feminist and a woman, I must say the optics of a pregnant woman standing firm and taking charge is a great message for young girls to see everywhere.

Grand Duke lays wreath, confirms new regents

Chagny

Grand Duke Charles VII and his family visited the masoleum of his immediate predecessor Charles VI today, surrounded by senior members of Burgundian society. There they placed a wreath and paid their respects and a priest recited the De profundis. The ceremony comes as official mourning for the catastrophic deaths of Grand Duke Charles VI and members of his family near its conclusion.

Later this afternoon in front of the Senate in a televised ceremony, the grand duke will confirm his son Leopold and daughter-in-law Mireille as his regents. His prepared remarks at that event have been released to the press. The grand duke will express his hope that with this peaceful transition of power after the recent tragedy that Bourgogne's foundations are have not been undermined, but are only stronger for having weathered the storm.

Bourgogne has returned to some sense of normalcy, but polls show there is still much uncertainty among the populace despite the trust building efforts of the grand duke, led by his daughter-in-law Mireille and his son Leopold. Markets as well remain unsettled, with a general trend of investors placing their funds in only the most secure sectors of the economy.

We still mourn for the passing away of Grand-Duke Charles VI. We believe that Bourgogne will be in good hands with Grand-Duke Charles VII on the Throne, being represented by Crown-Prince Leopold and Princess Mireille. We wish them all the wisdom they need to lead Bourgogne to a bright future.

It is good to see that Bourgogne emerged from the turbulent period after the death of Grand-Duke Charles VI. We wish for a bright future for Bourgogne and look forward to a fruitful cooperation with the new government. We invite Crown-Prince Leopold and Princess Mireille to a visit in Trier.

Catholic group marches through Chagny

Chagny

Yesterday afternoon a large group of men and women staged an unannounced march through the streets of Chagny to the Church of Saint-Nicholas-du-Chardonnet, arriving in time for Vespers. Police estimate their number at around five hundred. The group carried banners bearing the Sacred Heart and calling for obedience to Christ the King.

Speaking to members of the press who had arrived on the scene, a man claiming to be the spokesman for the group said they called themselves the Army of the Little Brethren and had risen up to call Bourgogne to repentance and reparation. "We pray for Grand Duke Charles' soul in purgatory. We pray for Bourgogne's soul, the soul of the people. Our new duke has been sent to us from God. We must embrace him."

Searching the interweb for 'Little Brethren' using several of the major search engines turned up multiple hits linking to messageboards, web fora, and websites where yesterday's march had been planned for awhile by anonymous persons using interweb handles such as RuralCatholicMom and StBasilsServant.

Police told le Soleil that no disruptions were reported aside from some minor traffic delays.

Search for lost emperor leads to Serenierre

Chagny

A team of archaeologists from the Ecole Polytechnique de Chagny have been searching for the grave of the Holy Frankish Emperor Louis IV for over ten years, having taken up the cudgels after past attempts have failed to turn up hard evidence of the emperor's final resting place. Louis, renowned by chroniclers of his reign for his attention to administration and justice, fell off his horse while leading a group surveying land for a castle. Chronicles record that due to the heat of the summer, the emperor's funeral was held at a small village church and then promptly buried. Since then, the village has been lost in the mists of time.

But Francois Ducard of the Ecole told le Soleil that new evidence points to a village now known as Chalonierre across the border in the Serenien Republic. "The medieval village we now know was wiped out by plague a hundred years after the death of Louis and not resettled. The original foundations were only discovered a few years ago during the construction of a car park. Work done by our group in conjunction with colleagues in Serenierre have led us to believe that the remains of the church are those of the church described in the medieval chronicles."

The team from the Ecole Polytechnique has recently secured permission from Serenien authorities to travel to Chalonierre to join in the excavations. "We are very excited to have been invited to take part and bring the search to an end. Louis' final resting place has long been a holy grail so to speak and the quest has been going on for a long time. It is an honor to take part in this chapter and have the chance to write the conclusion."

Senate meets behind closed doors on foreign policy

Chagny

The Senate met yesterday behind closed doors for what high level sources describe as a frank discussion of Bourgogne's place in Gallo-Germania in the wake of the Seven Days War and the dissolution of the Trier security framework of which Bourgogne was a part. The content, but no specifics was confirmed by a spokesman of the Regency who said only, "All options are on the table for Bourgogne's future."

According to Professor Jean-Claude Loval, senior analyst to le Soleil, the discussions can only be going in one direction: neutrality. "After the failure of Bourgogne to decisively intervene on Trivodnia's behalf and the subsequent domestic fallout, neutrality can be the only course." Le Soleil asked the professor his thoughts on Bourgogne aligning with Elben and its Council of the North allies. "It's possible in much the same way we aligned with Trier without formally joining, but my colleagues and I don't see it. We are and never have been of the North and our borders with them are not extensive. It is just not a natural fit."

FOOD SHORTAGES EXPECTED TO END BY SUMMER
Agriculture ministry forecasts farmers rebounding

A report released today by the agriculture ministry forecasts the end of occasional food shortages in some areas of Elben by the middle of summer. The shortages, a result of the oil sanctions of Kadikistan and the subsequent small harvests of the past year, have continued intermittently in some areas due to the refugee crisis of the Seven Days War. With the sanctions ended last year, the refugee crisis stabilized, and oil flowing from Caledonia, farmers surveyed for the report indicate it is full speed ahead this year. The ministry report cites weather service data that this year's crops should have excellent growing conditions in all parts of Elben.

"[...] Policies should have been implemented in order to compensate Gunnish farmers for selling wheat and barley in the North, rather than on the world market. This report concludes that the Foreign Office, and Foreign Secretary Larkin in particular, was too eager to secure access to Southern markets. The humanitarian crisis in Elben was avoidable. PLASTIC SACKS BANNED
"We owe it to Elbeners to keep their land clean!"

After months of petitioning, the leaders of the organization Green Elben have seen their hard work pay off as today at the New Palace His Majesty proclaimed a final ban on the use of plastic sacks in Elben. The ban is to go into full effect at the end of April.

Horst Beck, chairman of Green Elben spoke to the press outside the palace. He commented on the effect of a recent documentary, Always With Us, for bringing awareness to the issue. "So many saw the film and realized that our trash isn't going away once it is buried. For a lot of it, it will be there for generations. We owe it to Elbeners to keep their land clean and the king heard our pleas. We owe His Majesty great thanks for acting.

LAND OFFER FROM GUNNLAND REMAINS UNCONFIRMED
Rumors continue to circulate after anonymous sources released redacted documents

The province of Visislava in southeastern Gunnland has reportedly been offered to Elben for an unknown sum of money. The province would provide Elben with a direct border with the Grand Duchy of Bourgogne. The report is based on redacted documents on foreign ministry letterhead summarizing the Gunnish offer and possible negotiating strategy going forward. Most of the details of the offer were blacked out before the documents were released. A spokesman for the foreign ministry refused to confirm that such an offer had officially been received, but did not deny that the documents were in fact genuine.

Border police monitor situation

Chagny

The situation along the border with Neustria remains tense this week as civilians react to the arrest of a man trying to cross from Neustria to Bourgogne to visit family members. The man was confronted by a Neustrian police officer and after a scuffle, the man was arrested and the officer went to the hospital.

Foreign Minister Hugh Villier in testimony to a committee of the Senate yesterday explained that the current situation along the border remains legally murky as citizens find themselves separated from family and jobs. "We're dealing with a lot paperwork right now as people choose their best option. Staying with families and homes they've known all their lives or staying with jobs that pay well and keep their families fed. We're doing all we can to facilitate the process."

Later in his testimony, the minister answered questions on negotiations over the separation of military assets. When confronted directly, Villier acknowledged that Neustria was taking possession of a significant portion of the army and navy, but that negotiations to ensure that the division was equitable were processing smoothly.

"This is just too delicious," she read the newspaper as she bit into a piece of olive oil dipped brioche. It was no secret that Villesen was quite giddy about the disruption in Northern Gallia by the dismantling of the Burgundian state as a power. Divided between the royalty of Elben and the nobles of Ouistreham. Now petty squabbles over border demarcations and military divisions. "This is just too damn delicious." Oh, and the brioche was quite good too.
