Cherokee Tobacco Offers Price Break

NAKODA --
What's good news for Cherokee-brand smokers may be bad for many small retailers as Akwesasne's biggest tobacco company moves to drive down cigarette prices. As of Jan 15, Cherokee Tobacco launched a new pricing program that gives about 10,000 retailers, roughly a third of all stores, a $5-a-carton price break they're supposed to pass along to consumers. Retailers who get the deal agree not to sell above a maximum price but can decide to sell for less. The other retailers, though, are just out of luck. Now, the Lennox Businessmen's Association (LBA) is fighting back, saying all convenience stores will be forced to slash cigarette prices and lower profit margins to remain competitive -- and some could go under.

"It's really unfair," Johnathan Pierce, an LBA member. "It's not an equal playing field. They have a huge market share and they are trying to dictate," said Pierce, who runs a variety store on Killarny St. in the capital city. He said smokers will always hunt for bargains and it will be especially tough when one store gets the deal and another just down the street or around the corner does not. Cherokee spokesperson Eric Shawanda said the company can't afford to extend the discount to all retailers and has the right to choose who gets the deal.
A letter from Cherokee to LBA said retailers were chosen for the program based on their volume of tobacco sales, location, demographics of their neighbourhood and their "willingness, capability and motivations to work with Cherokee Tobacco."
Shawanda said the manufacturers have to take action to reduce consumer prices to fight the growing trade in black market cigarettes that sell for a fraction of the price. "The price gap is so huge. That's why we have a maximum price to bridge that gap as much as possible," Shawanda said.
He said Cherokee completed a study before launching the full program and found it didn't trigger any retailers to close.

Cynthia Callahan, executive director of Physicians for a Smoke Free Akwesasne, said it's easy for Cherokee to pressure small retailers and the strategy is a cheap way for Cherokee to push down prices.
"Instead of just tobacco companies competing, this forces retailers to compete amongst themselves so that doubles the pressure on the prices,". She said the convenience store sector would inevitably shrink as cigarette consumption declines and black market smokes eat up more of the market.

Long-Gun Registry Survives Gov't Vote

NAKODA -- Akwesasnans may have to settle the future of the long-gun registry at the polls after MPs preserved the controversial program in a dramatic showdown in the House of Representatives Thursday night. Refusing to accept the razor-thin 153-151 vote to keep the controversial registry alive, Prime Minister Joseph Henrick of the Progressive Conservative Bloc (PCB) vowed to keep up his party’s effort to kill the registry, which he has denounced as a costly and ineffective.
“After 15 years, opposition to the long-gun registry is stronger in this country than it has ever been. With the vote tonight, its abolition is closer than it has ever been,” he said outside Parliament. “The people of the territories of this country are never going to accept being treated like criminals. We will continue our efforts until this registry is finally abolished,” the PM said.

The narrow vote kept the registry alive but did little to silence the divisive debate that has raged for months over the 15-year-old program that compels Akwesasnans to register all shotguns and rifles.
The registry is decried by opponents as a costly, ineffective intrusion on law-abiding gun owners and applauded by advocates as an essential tool for police officers that saves lives. The vote over its future was charged with politics and emotion. In the public gallery were a number of pro-registry supporters, including Martha Rathjen, a survivor of the Westmount shotting in 1989.

And just hours before the vote, Siksika Democratic-Labour MP Scott Layton told caucus members his own personal motivation to back the registry – his father Reagan Layton committed suicide with a gun.
The vote marked a victory for Democratic-Labour Party (DLP) leader Tom Gillis as he noted the Democratic-Labour caucus was united in voting to preserve the registry with the extra backing of the Reformist Alliance Party (RAP).

ER Protocols Show Positive Signs

WIKWEMIKONG -- It’s been less than a month since Akwesasne Health Services (AHS) launched new protocols designed to reduce pressure on emergency rooms but the new measures are showing some encouraging early signs, says the organization’s top official. “It’s fair to say that we’ve made some progress, but it’s fair to say also that there is much more work that needs to be done,” Mark Eagle, acting president and CEO of AHS, said during a press conference on Friday. According to AHS, protocols may be activated when one or more of the following triggers has been met:
• The percentage of blocked emergency department care spaces (due to patients awaiting admission, diagnostics or consults) exceeds 35 per cent;
• When there are no additional beds in an emergency department to treat patients arriving with the most critical injuries or illnesses;
• When the hospital is full;
• When the percentage of emergency department occupancy exceeds 110 per cent;
• There are seven or fewer EMS units available to transport patients to hospital;
• More than five patients have been waiting eight hours or longer for a hospital bed since the decision was made to admit them (number dependent on facility size).

Marijuana and Education Dispensaries

MOHAVE, ATHABASCA -- Gus Jacobs is a pioneer in an industry that is just taking root in Akwesasne. Jacobs, the founder and CEO of Greenridge University in Ithica, plans to offer Akwesasnan entrepreneurs an education in the fledging business of medical-marijuana dispensaries. His team, he said, helped open more than 225 dispensaries in Athabasca, Tallcree and the western United Territories. "The demographic that we recognized, it's not the 21- to 28-year-olds," he said of future pot-business owners. "It's the 35- to 65-year-olds, the displaced professionals, the people that want to get into this industry in total and complete compliance with the state laws or jurisdiction that they live in." Later this month, the university, whose curriculum is provisionally approved by a division of the Athabasca Department of Higher Education, plans a two-day seminar in . For $295, students can learn about the politics and legal issues linked to marijuana, as well as how to grow the herb and put it in a snack form called edibles. Those who excel can become "budtenders," helping patients match the best strains of marijuana for their ailments.

Jacobs is not alone in seeing the opportunity. Mohave chiropractor Drew Bedrick, for example, already is marketing a dispensing system. Once regulations are in place, many entrepreneurs are likely to want to get in on the beginning of what some believe is sure to be a high-growth industry. In November, Athabasca voters passed Proposition 202, which will allow qualifying patients with certain debilitating medical conditions to receive up to 2 1/2 ounces of marijuana every two weeks from dispensaries or cultivate up to 12 marijuana plants if they live 25 miles or farther from a dispensary. The Athabasca Department of Health Services is reviewing more than 1,000 comments on proposed medical-marijuana rules. A new draft is expected at the end of the month, followed by a second comment period. Final rules aren't expected until March.
Jacobs described those who attend his classes as "flat-out entrepreneurs" who see the industry as more than cultivating and selling marijuana. For example, insurance brokers who sell medical-marijuana insurance, real-estate agents who lease or sell space and security people who provide security for dispensaries have attended the program, he said. "There's a lot of outside interest just from those who are more entrepreneurial," Jacobs said. "There's a lot of people that kind of see it as a savior from a business perspective."

One of the ways to make people more comfortable with marijuana, he said, is to educate them that medical marijuana is not just available through smoking. He emphasizes that patients can get their medication through edibles, sodas, ice creams and vaporized forms, a technique that eliminates the irritating respiratory toxins found in marijuana smoke by heating the herb to form a mist.

PM: "Akwesasne will join the Council of Nations"

Prime Minister Joseph Hendrick at this morning's Press Conference

NAKODA, DRYDEN TER. -- The last few weeks back from the Christmas break in the Parliament of the United Territories have been quite eventful with all sorts of proposals falling on the laps of our elected MPs. With the scrapping of the Long Gun Registry scrapped itself, The Progressive Conservative Bloc (PCB), a minority government lead by Prime Minister Joseph Hendrick, seem to be throwing out their own bills before they hit Parliament awareness becasue of the fierce competetiveness within those halls. The official Opposition, the Liberal-Democratic Party have been gaining some significant ground because of of the seemingly slumping ehtusiasm in the PCB.

This morning however, perhaps in a political plight to bolster his image as a leader, Prime MInister Joseph Hendrick announced during the State of The Confederation Press Conference that The United Territories will be joining the Council of Nations - with a strong and boastful "will" at that. The ever-confident Mr. Hendrick smiled and gave his traditional "thumbs-up" to the cameras. When asked how certain he was of the application being accepted by the CoN, the Prime Minister had this to say: "...With the unity of people and democracy within Akwesasne, because of our democratic ways and because of what we have to offer as a nation and a people, it would be almost criminal not to induct our free country as a part of the world's most prestigious of organisations." After another smile and brief wave, the Prime Minister walked off from the podium. So far - with a little debate of course - the PCB has recieved support from the opposition as well as the Reformist Alliance and the Christian Values Party. The First People's Coalition, however, were the only ones to slam the motion all together.
"...Once again, this is a way to expose our people's first land to the greed of the extreme bourgeois north." FPC leader Philip Gouldhawk during Parliament's session yesterday. With a tall disposition and his ever-slick mohawk, Gouldhawk condemned the government's attempts to make Akwesasne a part of a "...corrupt and untransparant society..."

With the application voted on by Paliament, passed and appllied to the Council of Nations, time can only tell how long it will be before it is voted on within the Security Council.

Singer/Songwriter Mick Dylan Announces Tour

Mick Dylan, 56, Huron Stadium in 2009

APACHE, ATHABASCA TER. -- He has had a staggering career unlike any other in Akwesasne. His powerful, raspy and soothing voice combined with his memory of the accoustic guitar can sell-out a full house within seconds. Yes, the Apache-born Mick Dylan has announced that he intends to go on the road once again after a mysterious absence from performing since his last blowout concert at Huron Stadium in Sandusky. Entertainment Outlook interviewed the living legend about this tour. A somewhat hazy Dylan answerered quite thouroughly, "...You know, I miss it, y'know. The energy and the love from the crowd, I miss it all. I think it's what's kept me goin' all this time." "...We'll definately be touring Akwesasne from south to north, from Neepawa to Ithica and all that... I hope to also make bookings across the world really, if anyone will have me of course."

Being known as a poet just as much as he is a singer/songwriter, Dylan is a fan-favorite almost world-wide where his messages of hope and unity, with a good riff to back it up, generates a new fan base every year. He's expected to perform classics such as Bridge to Mohave, Travelin' Savage, Dream Ketcher, Desert Man and the list continues. If this world-wide tour is recieved positively and other nations accept to have Mick Dylan perform, it is reported that half the proceeds would go towards the rebuilding of torn, rural areas in Himyar.

PCB Answers to Oikawa's Veto

FNC leader Philip Gouldhawk applauds Oikawa's veto in Nakoda

NAKODA, DRYDEN TER. -- On January 17th, the United Territories of Akwesasne had formally applied to join what was thought to be an important international organisation known world-wide as the Council of Nations. Prime Minister Josepf Hendrick of the Progressive Conservative Bloc felt confident in the UTA's entry. But just as fast as the application was sent, it was almost immediatly blanketed by Oikawa's veto along with six other nations.

Now Hendrick and the PCB, who showed a gloating disposition upon sending the application, have some answering to do. Today, in the House of Representatives' debate session, opposition leader Tom Gillis of the Liberal-Democratic Party was under fire just as much as the PM for having supported the CoN application otherwise appeasing the PCB. First Nation's Coalition leader Philip Gouldhawk, who slammed the proposition since the beginning, said "...When everyone else seems to be appaled by Oikawa's tyranical veto, we in the FNC and many others all across Akwesasne applaud it. Now we may continue our work inside the UTA without the help of the truly corrupt who fill the halls of the Council..."

What was a heated session in the UTA is also a heated contrevorsy in the international community - not because of the veto, but because of whom the veto came from. The Oikawan Empire had blatantly disregarded all the applications at hand and completely crushed the applications sent into the CoN without allowing any other CoN member to get a word in. This also caused for the delegation of Suionia to resign from the CoN's halls. Now the question facing our elected MPs in Akwesasne is wether or not we should remove our second application and move on. The PCB is firmly in favor of the re-send and will have to make a motion to keep in that way in the House of Representatives. It has not been confirmed if the opposition LDP will back the PCB once more.

PM Calls in The Mohawk Guard to Judea

Chinook Helicopters preparing to leave for the Judean Republic

ALBANY, ATHABASCA TER. -- The Mohawk Guard Training Zone (MGTZ) near Albany, Athabasca has seen a surge in abled bodies ready to help in the recent natural disaster which occured in the Judean Republic earlier this week. With a recorded 223 fatalities so far in the hardest-hit areas, Akwesasnan Prime Minister Hendrick has offered the assistance of our nation's Mohawk Guard to aid the 38,000 Judeans which have been rendered homeless prior to the earthquake which ravaged the Nablus and Rehava areas of Judea.

The Mohawk Guard was formed by former Prime Minister Laird Johnston in 1956 as a peace squad to help in natural disasters and other times of crisis for Akwesasne and the international community. They are effective in medical help, re-construction and human relations all together. The government's of Cakistan, Breotonia and Guiana have also offered their services to Judea and will most-likely be encountering the Mohawk Guard in the coming weeks.

Update on the Mick Dylan Tour

Mick Dylan, 2007

SANDUSKY, TALLCREE TER. -- Country, folk and rock singer/songwriter Mick Dylan had recently announced that he will be touring Akwesasne and other countries in Europe - which is said to be starting in early to mid March. The man described as a poet and an activist also said half the proceeds of the tour will be going towards the rebuilding of devastated areas in Himyar. The Judean Republic, which is a stop on the tour as well, is said to be getting most of these proceeds if all goes well. But when it comes to the Red Man Walkin', we as much as the large world-wide fanbase know that the tour will be a staggering success.

Booked so far are four different locations in Akwesasne including our nation's capital Nakoda and among them, the Real Country Hall in Mohave where Dylan is from. "...Akwesasne is responsible for country music. The least I can do is perform where my heart and life's work originated from..." he said. So far, Dylan will be playing in Arendaal, the devastated area of Nablus in Judea, Caskistan and Radilo. The Shaw-Fujikawa Foundation in Breotonia will also be matching the proceeds made by Dylan's tour to send to Himyar. Dylan will be playing two cities in Breotonia as well.

There's still time for other nation's to book a Dylan appearance in their respective countries. Being for a good cause, he hopes to hear more from the outside. Exact dates and locations will be announced by next week at the latest.

Chief Governor May Call Spring Elections

Official photogrpah: Chief Governor Wedgel Tadaho II

NAKODA, DRYDEN TER. -- Many agree, politcians and citizens alike, that the current political situation in the United Territories Parliament is nothing short of being in turmoil. The Progressive Conservative Bloc lead by Prime Minister Joseph Hendrick has suffered quite a few blows this past month and seems to be slipping in the popularity polls. Has Akwesasne lost faith in the PCB?

The Prime Minister had a short meeting yesterday afternoon with our nation's iconic Cheif Governor, Wedgel Tadaho II to discuss the future of the PCB and their current minority government in the House of Representatives. Tadaho realises and hears quite clearly the cry of all opposition parties who are all demanding for a spring election to be called. This could be bad news for the Prime Minister, if his popularity doesn't bolster-up. With the scrapping of the long-gun registry bill and Akwesasne's humiliating denial into the Council of Nations, Liberal-Democratic leader Tom Gillis believes that "...Akwesasnans have reason to lose confidence in this Prime Minister and his administration."

With that said, the Chief Governor has an ultimatum: Prorogue Parliament - almost like sending it into brief recess - or call a Spring election. Given the majority of the House of Representatives wanting a spring election, it looks like Akwesasnans may be going to the polls sooner than expected.

Rig Site Protest Leads to Seven Arrests

Native-Akwi man among seven arrested

SANDUSKY, TALLCREE TER. -- What was meant to be a peaceful protest this morning turned violent in the afternoon when seven total arrests were made as a result by Sandusky Territory Officers. The protest was held at one of Narvajo Oilwell Akwesasne's [or NOA] oil rig sites spread across what is argued to be sacred Cree land - portions of an old burial site to be exact. These protets have been frequent throughout the rig's opening back in 2006. Most protesters are of Cree descent. Cree is a branch of the Akwi language/culture and is the dominant "tribe" in the territory of Tallcree. Demographically, they are also the smallest tribe left in Akwesasne.

"We shouldn't have to fight to ask for so little - something so sacred to us." A elderly Cree-Akwi woman commented to reporters today. In the morning, the protest remained quite peaceful with occasional disturbances of the peace having been reported be rig workers. The Sandusky Territory Officers (STO) had built a barricade around the protest site which is when three to four from the crowd began throwing rocks and glass bottles towards the police. From there, the STO intervened to seperate the trouble-makers from the crowd. One officer was struck in the back of the head by a masked protester. He was struck with a 2x4.
NOA has yet to comment on the protest and if they are willing to listen to the Cree-Awki's pleas. In the end, seven protesters were arrested and will be detained until prosecuted in a court of law in Sandusky. They have the right to a lawyer, and it has been reported that the two injured men are recovering well from alleged beatings.

Treasures of the South Hits Shelves Nation-Wide

Official poster for the 'Treasures of the South'

NAKODA, DRYDEN TER. -- A famous piece of Akwesasnan folk rolled into regional history and individual tolerence, Treasures of the South, a classic novel written by Wayne S. Howell has been re-released in new paperback and hardcover form all across the United Territories. Originally, it was written in 1935 by Howell to try and make aware the torubles of race and intolerence between Native-Akwis and Caucasian Akwesasnans which ran rabid throughout the nation - especially in the south in his decade.

The novel is inspired by the true events and unbelievable experiences of infamous outlaw John Reily Grant, who left the northern country in 1877 to go hide southward in what was then considered "savage territory". He ran there and eventually intergrated himself into their culture where he then was deemed with the name White Eagle by the Hopi-Akwi tribe. The story is told in a 1917 setting before the United as Akwesasnans Act gave Native-Akwis, the dominant race of the nation, equal status as Caucasian Akwesasnans have.

Over 234 million copies region-wide were sold since its being written and this re-release is meant to gain awarness of a classic Akwesasnan novel. So far since hitting shelves, 22 million copies have been sold so far and are expected to copy 10 million proceeding copies a day to rpint and send worldwide in a variety of different languages.

The Helenan media reports that this may very well split the nation in two. Akwesasnan investors, worry.

Highlights from the House of Representatives

Prime Minister (PCB) Joseph Hendrick today

NAKODA, DRYDEN TER. -- Prime Minister Hendrick had to really try and motivate his party as well as make his party as a whole look good, today. MPs in the House of Representatives hammered the Prime Minister and Progressive Conservative Bloc for a variety of issues they claim have not been adressed and/or dealt with appropriately. The Chief Governor, Wedgel Tadaho II, will make his decsion public tomorrow (wednesday) which will answer the question: Is Akwesasne looking at a possible spring election? With pressure brought on to the PCB by the opposition, and many public fumbles and misconcepts by the PCB as a whole - the Chief Governor's decision will definately spark talk among all sides of the spectrum.

The Council of Nations -- Debate still surrounds the halls of the House of Representatives about Akwesasne re-sending its application to the Council of Nations - an organization that now all opposition parties see as a "useless over-stated body of corrupt puppet nations". The Progressive Conservative Bloc continues to argue and say that "...the re-sending, after such an international fiasco, might promt some within the Security Council to look over those worthy of entering a community set to make peace and help the helpless,.. Something Akwesasne, is proud to say, take part in as is a part of our policy..." The Liberal-Democratic Party leader and Head of the Opposition Tom Gillis fired back at Hendrick by saying "... Akwesasne should not be involved in an organization that is on the brink of collapse and failure. We've suffered one humiliating veto, let's not face possibly being admitted into something that will be dismantled in due time ... The Prime Minister is being too closed-minded and refuses to cooperate with other parties across the floor despite the PCB's minority government status..."

NOA Protest -- The First People's Coalition (FPC) today, demanded The Hendrick government adress the issue of the recent land protest which occured yesterday at on of Navarjo Oilwell Akwesasne. The protest was dominanted by Cree-Akwi people who have protested the use of thier sacred land to pump for oil. According to FPC leader Philip Gouldhawk, Hendrick should have dealt with this quicker and with more penalty upon NOA. "... With complete disregard towards the Native-Awki people of Tallcree, this Prime Minister has not yet investigated this matter with NOA in order to find a reasonable compromise for those who were there first and for those who still rest there to this day ... The beatings also, should be adressed, and the Sandusky Police should be held accountable if it is is so found that these men were non-threatening Akwesasnan citizens..."

Federal Ban on Same-Sex Marriage? -- The Progressive Conservatibe Bloc and the Party for Chirstian Values have sided on the note of brignning a federal ban on same-sex marriage and simply installing a common law system for same-sex couples across all territories. The PCV claims "... Marriage is to remain a sacred Union between a man and a woman. If two same-sex couples want the same rights as a married couple would have in the basic, then the common-law system is very practical. But, we have to remember the values this nation was built on, it it wasn't for homosexuals to marry." The Reformist Alliance Party (RAP) claims that the federal government has no right in the private lives of the Akwesasnan people. "... We believe every man or woman, has the right to marry someone of the same-sex as woukd any other couple in the United Territories. This unconstitutional Bill being presented by the PCV, and backed by the PCB, only removes the rights of Akwesasnans everywhere

We firmly support any action done by the Awesasne to prevent or outright ban homosexual acts. Homosexuality is a blight on society, and an insult to Holy Matrimony, which is defined by the Gospel as union between man and woman.

Sincerely,

CG: "Akwesasne Will See a Summer Election"

Chief Governor Wedgel Tadaho II during the announcement

NAKODA, DRYDEN TER. -- The Chief Governor of the UNited Territories, Wedgel Tadaho II, has finally made his decision wether or not Akwesasne will be plunged into a surprise spring time federal election. Yesterday, the head-of-state made it a reality that Akwesasnans will, in fact, be headed to the polls, but in summer time. His reasoning for making the elections in the summer indtead of the spring was in the spirit of time and momey management for the candidates and the nation as a whole.

"With the pleas I have recieved from the Opposition and from the evidence I have seen out of national interest, let it be said by myself - here and now - there will be a federal election across the UTA this summer." The seventy-three year-old announced during a Press Conference in the United Territories Parliament in Kakoda. "Akwesasnans will hearby go to the polls on August 1st of 2011." Prime Minister Joseph Hendrick and the Progressive Conservative Bloc have until August to prove to the people that they are worth keeping in power and maybe even showing their worthiness to be granted a majority government. The Liberal-Democratic Party, lead by candidate Tom Gillis, have already begun airing attack-ads striking at the PCB and even other third parties in the House of Representatives which they consider "...a nuissance..."
Philip Gouldhawk and the First Nation's Coalition have already begun rallying support in their stronghold ridings of southern Athabasca and most of Tallcree. Their "Natives First" policy, though considered controversial, may gain them more seats in the House of Representatives if thier support continues to grow from the south and up. The Reformist Alliance and the Party for Christian Values and thier respective leader will also be running for Prime Minister and a few Independent candidates have been said to throw their hats in as well.

With all of this said and done, The Chief Governor's decision has been analyzed by most political critics as being a "good move", while other more right-wing critics believe there wasn't any justification for such an election right away. This will be Prime Minister Hendrick's third time running in a federal campaign since his election in 2006.

Update: AMG in Judea

AMG Chief Director Shawn Terrance

REHEVA, JUDEAN REP. -- Not long after the areas of Nablus and Reheva were hit by an earthquake did the Akwesasnan government send in the Akwesasnan Mohawk Guard to help with whatever troubles the Judeans might encounter. Akwesasne has always tried to hold a regional policy of aid when it comes to natural disasters and other things of the sort since the AMG's establishment in 1956.

"So far, we've been cooperating with the Judean government who have been nothing more than helpful to thier own people and other aid coming in from abroad." said the AMG Chief Director, Shawn Terrance. "Our greatest concern right now would be giving medical aid to the refugees without homes at this moment in time." he continued. The Judeans, especially those in camps right now, have responded well to the aid coming from a fellow democratic nation. "All in all, we're here to help. Though we understand the Judeans do have the means necessary to reconstruct these areas on their own, we feel that this would save them alot of time and money."

What's to Come on the Campaign Trail

left to right: Daniel Price (PCV), Philip Gouldhawk (FPC), PM Joseph Hendrick (PCB),
Tom Gillis (LDP) and Wanda Bourne (RAP)

NAKODA, DRYDEN TER. -- With the United Territories now in campaign mode after the Chief Governor called summer elections last week, very seldom a politician or political activist in Akwesasne have remained sitting down. All across the nation, televised attack ads have already made their appearences, signs of the already-decided voters have been hammered on front lawns and political debate, though sometimes frusterating, has boosted political awareness and cooperation amongst citizens everywhere. But what are the issues that most Akwesasnans are actually concerned about? It seems Parliament's top leader will have to step-up their game if they want to gain power in Nakoda.

Though we're still far from the televised debates, Opposition leader Tom Gillis of the Liberal-Democratic Party has made it clear that he will be after Prime Minister Joseph Hendrick's job with full force. The LDP have already aired their ads against Hendrick and his minority government claiming that they are "...unaware..." and are "...turning Akwesasne into a backward society..." Hendrick has aired his own ads against the LDP reminding Akwesasnans of the high national debt rate when they were in power before the PCB was voted in, in 2006. The Conservatives have also struck at the First People's Coalition saying "...handing power to Gouldhawk and the FPC would be like signing the death certificates of all caucasian Akwesasnans..." It seems that the rivalry between the PCB and the LDP - which has long been burning - is still veyr much alive and well. The Party for Christian Values lead by Daniel Price will also try and nab more seats within the House of Representatives and they have claimed that they don't mind working with another PCB minority, or even a majority, over the more left-wing or "Unfaithful" parties such as the Liberals and the Reformist Alliance Party lead by Wanda Bourne.

The issues looming the most over Akwesasne would have to be immigration policy, international policy and of course the mess in the Council of Nations has become a big subject in the nation. The Prime Minister has announced he will begin his travels on the road in the northwest first and make his way southward. He continues to remind the nation that no matter how hot things got in Parliament in these last few months, he has lead Akwesasne out of the economic slump in which the previous Liberal government plunged us into. The FPC has decided to take another approach as Philip Gouldhawk has already made a few appearences in the deep south and southeast of Akwesasne where rural Native-Akwi communities have proven to be the party's stronghold. The Reformist Alliance leader Wanda Bourne continues to denounce all of the other opposing parties in the House of Representatives claiming that they are too corrupt and blinded to run a nation as great as Akwesasne.
We will continue to keep an eye on our officials along the campaign trails where they will, no doubt, be answering to what the people want to hear and deliver with progress after the elections have ended.

New Polls Paint a Picture

NAKODA, DRYDEN TER. -- A nation-wide poll across Akwesasne is beginning to give the people an image of what's to come on the campaign trail for Akwesasne's candidates running for the top job. These polls come not even a week after the summer 2011 federal elections were announce by Chief Governor Wedgel Tadaho II last wednesday evening. When it comes to popularity among federal parties, this is what the polls gave us:

Progressive Conservative Bloc
- 37.2%
Liberal-Democratic Party - 33.2%
First People's Coalition
- 16.2%
Reformist Alliance Party
- 9.6%
Party for Christian Values - 3.5%

While this shows us that the LDP is closing-in on Prime Minister Hendrick's Conservatives, it also paints a picture of a devastating blow to the Reformist Alliance and the Party for Christian Values. The PCV took the most damage here and if popularity doesn't improve, they may not see re-entrance into the House of Representatives nor be appointed a seat in the Hoyenah Senate. In comparison to the last poll conducted, the LDP has gotten the most newfound support while the Reformists and the PCV, most-likely, lost their support to them as well.
So far, this looks like it will be the duke-out of the century between Tom Gillis and Prime Minister Joseph Hendrick this campaign season. But on another side note, The FPC has remained in the nominal area where it has always been these past months meaning they have never lost support in the southeast where they have a political "stronghold".

Abortion Law Repealed in Senate

NAKODA, DRYDEN TER. -- The laws on the taboo subject of abortion have long been a dragging issue in the United Territories House of Representatives. After after having past the debate in the lower house on monday, the motion to repeal abortion being legal was passed in the Hoyenah Senate this afternoon.

Publically, the people of Akwesasne are somewhat divided but would rather not even speak of abortion. The heavy-knit Native-Akwi community outright condems the use of the words in some of their communities claiming "...nature never intended for the meddling hand of man to destroy one of her creations..." which in an ironic twist has the more conservative caucasian communities agreeing with them. However, the liberal community as a whole in Akwesasne continue to press the argument that choice is democracy, therefor, retrieving a woman's right to choose is tyranical.
The Hoyenah Senate in the capital city of Nakoda is currently dominated by the Progressive Conservative Bloc with 54 of the 105 seats within the upper house. The Liberal-Democratic Party have 47 seats while the First People's Party have 2 seats and the Reformists have 2 as well. The Senate has also been an area of reform talks because of its odd appointment method. Constitutionally, the Chief Governor, with the cooperation of the Prime Minister, choose - or appoint - senators for the senate itself. This is only convenient that this Prime Minister would have his party grasp at a majority in at least one of the legislatures.

Prime Minister Joseph Hendrick has already signed the repeal, and now all Akwesasne has to do is wait while clinics for this specific cause all acorss the nation close.

Mass Arrest in the Northwest

Alleged Native-Akwi-based crime boss John Atleo

ELLESMERE, DRYDEN TER. -- The United Territories Bureau of Investigation (UTBI) has claimed a landmark victory today over organized crime. After having gathered enough evidence in both the physical and verbal, the UTBI quickly made a solid move in igniting the largest mass arrest Akwesasne has seen in years.

Ellesmere is a city not far from Akwesasne's capital in the Dryden territory on the western border. Usually known for its pristeen parks and well-kept landmarks, the city has been making a name for itself when it came to organized crime. Aboriginal Based Organized Crime (ABOC) is a term used in Akwesasne which refers to organized crime syndicates in which, statistically, is almost - and if not, completely - of Native-Akwi origine. Ellesmere as well as other cities in the northwest such as Nakoda, Wikwemikong, Kenora, Ithica and Kingsberg have seen a surge in Aboriginal syndicates with mafia-style organization. "We've managed to apprehend 98 members of the local Atleo syndicate, including the alleged boss John Atleo himself." said the UTBI Co-Director Molly Atwood. "We've also managed to capture members of other Aboriginal syndicates stretching from the Bucannon clan to the Black Foot in the south. So, our work is certainly not done. But it is a start."

Most aboriginal-based gangs flourish in the northwest because of its more economically-charged location and positioning around the nation's capital. Most of these 98 alleged mobsters are charged with drug trafficking, human trafficking, murder, grand theft and a series of other charges being pressed against them by the federal government. Ellesmere Progressive Conservative MP George Klein believes that this nation's justice system mis still too slippery for our worst of criminals. "It's a sad fact that our justice system in Akwesasne seems to be going a little to the left for my taste and the taste of many an Akwesan around. Most of these thugs will probably walk out tomorrow. This is why we as Akwesasnan must support the PCB's reform proposal."

The Lib-Dem's New Tactic

Liberal-Democrat and Opposition leader Tom Gillis in Ft. Churchill today

FORT CHURCHILL, MANITOULIN TER. -- With Parliament in a brief two week recess for federal and local campaigns nation-wide to be configured, the leader of the Liberal-Democratic Party and leader of the Opposition Tom Gillis has taken to the road from Nakoda to Fort Churchill to begin his brief tour of Akwesasne where the people will have a chance to meet with, discuss and ask the LDP leader about issues that is on the minds of the every man. His cross-country tour is set to last a large portion of the two week recess before the first House of Commons' session begins in March.

The Liberal-Democratic Party has been suffering since they lost their majority power back in 2006 when Joseph Hendrick and the Progressive Conservative Bloc were voted in ... And again a second time in 2008. Their popularity has been slowly slumping since the second election when the Conservatives, and all other parties for that matter, have been jabbing at the Lib-Dems for having been in power during a tax-hike and a slimming national employment rate.
But in 2009, long-time senator Tom Gillis ran for leadership of his party and was voted in by the public as leader of the Liberal-Democrats by amost a landslide. He's considered to be the academic type and one who is not keen on keeping his comments to himself. He calls himself a fiscal liberal and a centrist politician. His new tactic of taking to the roads of Akwesasne - from north to south - is surely something that the Lib-Dems will enjoy and something that will boost awareness about Gillis, his policies and what he plans to accomplish if he becomes Prime Minister this summer.

Tom Gillis stopped in Fort Churchill today at the city's Economic Square where he spoke to the working class of the mountainous communities of the northwest. Promising better healthcare and promoting what our working-class means for Akwesasne, Tom Gillis plans on continuing this tour of smaller communities of the United Territories.

Awaiting the Atleo Trial

Reputed Native-Akwi mob boss, John Atleo, outside a Kenora Court

KENORA, LENNOX TER. -- The economic and gangland metropoles of Akwesasne's northwest was rattled last week when a mass arrest, or "bust", was set in motion upon Akwesasne's top organized crime figures in the nation. One of the figures was the head of the Atleo syndicate in Ellesmere and Kenora, John Atleo. Since the United Territories' Bureau of Investigation made the arrest of 98 alledged mobsters in the area, 84 of them have been identified as organized crime figures but only higher-ranking members will be tried. The others will have to stand by and wait.

John Atleo took over as boss of the Atleo syndicate after his father, John Sr., passed away in 1999. The Atleos are among one of the most nautorious and powerful crime syndicates in the northwest - at one time, John Atleo Sr. could've been considered as Kenora's "de facto mayor". The United Territories' Bureau of Investigation has spent millions of dollars each year to take further steps into stopping organized crime by getting the latest in espionage technology as well as boosting police numbers and equipment.
John Atleo Jr., today, met with the judge who told him his trial was set to begin in March. Atleo was seen leaving the court with his lawyer, Miller Wilcox, a famed mob lawyer who is said to be representing John Atleo once the deadline date comes around. "There is not enough substancial and physical evidence to prove that Mr. Atleo has anything to do with the drug trafficking and murder charges set before him." Wilcox said. Wilcox also added Atleo's race as a full-blooded Nahanni-Akwi native is a role still in play when it comes to the persecution of wealthy native-Akwi citizens.

Neck-in-Neck, So Far

Prime Minister Joseph Hendrick in Dawson

DAWSON, KEHEWIN TER. -- A little over a month has passed since the Chief Governor announced the summer elections of 2011. Since then, the abortion laws of Akwesasne have been repealed, common-law benefits have been installed for same-sex couples and Akwesasne has made its push into the European Defense Federation with notable help from the diplomats of Anglyn. All of this was accomplished by the Hendrick government with "...full cooperation of the entire Progressive Conservative Bloc..." as the Prime Minister himself put it today at a support rally in the city of Dawson - a city folkly known as The Conservative Territory.

A month ago, the nation-wide poll count placed the Prime minister and his government at having 37.2% national support in the United Territories with Tom Gillis' Liberal-Democrats closing-in at 33.2%. Now, it seems the PCB has lost ground while the LDP is gaining it. The PCB sits at having 35.8% national support while the LDP is even closer to its goal of giving the PM a run for his money by having 34.6%. The remainder of the count is scattered amongst the other three federal parties - one of which is the First People's Coalition which analysts say will come back as the third opposition in the House of Representatives.

Budget and the Armed Forces

CF-18 HAWK, United Territoies Air Force (UTAF)

NAKODA, DRYDEN TER. -- After slowly squeezing its way into the European Defence Federation recently, the Hendrick administration has made it a priority to 'boost some areas' of the United Territories Army. Promising to keep its committment to the international organization, this means the army will get financial aid, but will not tax the public to get it - something the Liberal-Democrats and the Reformist Alliance aren't on board with.

"We believe its a big mistake to even consider what we think is an already un-ncecessarily large military budget." said Reformist MP Ulva Dorris for Fort Eden in the Pickering Territory, "The Hendrick conservatives are trying to spin as as to ay that we, the left-wing, want to tax Akwesasnans for the military, when in fact, we don't want it to gain another dime."
Though not entierly agreeing with his counterpart, LDP MP Mark Dole says "...The Liberal-Democrats want to continue working with our military to ensure security and up-to-date equipment meets their needs. However, taking away funds for Education and Healthcare is not the way to do it."

Prime Minister Hendrick in Franken

Prime Minister Joseph Hendrick (PCB) arriving in Nurenberg, Franken

FRANKEN -- Ready in spurs, a traditional Akwesasnan hat and the southern charm we know him for, Akwesasne's own Prime Minister Joseph Hendrick was greeted warmly by the delegation of the Franconian government which he has been waiting to meet. This meeting comes only a few weeks after Akwesasne was admitted in the European Defense Federation, with a junior membership. The Prime Minister laughed and shook hands upon his arrival at the Knut Knytling International Airport in the EDF superpower.

Though it hasn't been publically spokn of in Akwesasne by the Progressive Conservative government, the Prime Minister plans on discussing various issues concerning both Franken and Akwesasne such as: the recent veto "sweep" in the Council of Nations, talks between Franken's Ministerprasident Graf Peter Solms and of course, Akwesasne's controversail oil sands - which our Prime minister has been a die hard "poster boy" in protecting. Being well-accompanied by his Royal Highness the Prince Regent of Franken, Prime Minister Hendrick waved to the crowd as he and First Lady Laura Dionne-Hendrick were set to attend a banquet in Koningsburg with some of the elite of the Franconian government.

The Prime Minister will be staying in Franken until Thursday where he will be finishing his tour of the German-speaking country in Wurzburg to see the nation's largest port. A port that could very well see Akwesasnan vessels in the near-future. All depends on the outcome of this meeting.

 ANGLYN -- Anglyn's reinging monarch, King Roderick IV (85) is rumoured to consider a move to Akwesasne's warmer climate on the southern coast. The move is said to take place upon the Anglysh King's retirement from the thrown.

:arrow:MONT-NORANDA, MADELEINE TER. -- Akwesasne's government prepares to host Eiffelland delegates in Mont-Noranda - the UTA's oldest city - to discuss oil and trade interests. Representatives from Eiffelland's top oil companies are said to be attending. Depending on the scheduling of the summit, Prime Minister Joseph Hendrick may be back in Akwesasne to attend.

 SANDUSKY, TALLCREE TER. -- Seven "Mohawk" gangsters were arrested in Sandusky earlier this morning. Tallcree's largest city set a crack-down in motion where they managed to catch seven alleged top panelists of the Mohawk gang.

 NOUVELLE VALMY, SAGUENEY TER. -- With the summer elections fast-approaching, it seems as though the Liberal-Democrats are gaining support among French-Akwesasnans in the territories of Sagueney and Mattice. Analysts say "...This could be because of LDP leader Tom Leclair's Montelimarian [French-Akwesasnan] heritage..."

 HAJR -- After not hearing much of the authoritarian Islamic monarchy in Hajr, Al'Araf announced the enveiling of a new Warship to add to its arsenal.

 NAKODA, DRYDEN TER. -- Progressive Conservatives and the Party for Christian Values agree that the communist meeting set to be held in Carentania "must be transparent to non-communist nations."

 CATIGNY -- Renowned Kassiopean writer Abraham Nanda's "The Next Way" banned in First Haven, Catigny. This comes as a result of the nation's new tough stance on culture and litterature not approved by their Board for Cultural Review.

PM Hosting Eiffellandian Delegation

Prime Minister Joseph Hendrick (PCB) this morning before the summit

MONT-NOURANDA, MADELEINE TER. -- Prime Minister Joseph Hendrick is meeting with the heads of the government of Eifelland today in Mont-Nouranda in the picturesque territory of Madeline to the midnorth. This meeting comes hsortly after the Prime Minister made a three day visit to Franken all after having the UNited Territories admitted into the European Defense Federation with a junior status not long ago.
The meeting itself will be held at the Nourandan Capitole Building, or La capitole de Nouranda which is the oldest politicsl edifice in Akwesasne within its oldest city. The Prime Minister wants to ensure that his counterparts from Eifelland truly get a taste of Akwesasne and undersatnd where we, as a people, stand on this world stage that seems to be shifting daily.

The Prime Minister has been reported to have met with his counterpart from across the sea this morning where has has introduced them to the Cabinet and other political and activist figures of Akwesasne. Tomorrow, the Prime Minister's guests will be invited to meet with the Chief Governor Wedgel Tadaho II briefly and then the summit itself will commence after lunch in the afternoon saturday. It will be a short visit but hopefully a productive one. Aside from visiting the landmarks and beaches, Prime Minister Hendrick hopes to break deals with Eiffelland on the Athabascan oil sands. Akwesasne's interests with oil are not so sparse, but the opposition has slammed the Prrogressive Conservatives for favouring EDF-states as main exporters - a statement the PCB claims to be "... ridiculous, unproven and downright false..."

But one can only hope that dollar signs are not only in the eyes and minds of the world leaders about to meet over the weekend in the culturally-French city. Talks on immigration, trade and naval training ops are also on the table to be discussed from the part of Akwesasne. What is to come from the other side of the table is still to come.

UTA Considers an Embargo on Trans-Nineveh

Minister of Foreign Relations, Leon Mardsen, during a conference this aternoon

NAKODA, DRYDEN TER. -- Last week, news hit the Islamic nation of Trans-Nineveh when the nation's tyranical government killed 17 of thier own countrymen for conspiracy of treason and agitation towards the iron-fisted panelists who run the nation from Ko-l-Noor. These seven nationals from the Himyari nation were killed by firing squad which was then aired on television - a scene so shocking that has unfortunately already hit the waves of the internet. Proceeding this massacre, nations such as Nicosia, Engellex, Serbovia [the list continues] condomened these violent actions upon the part of the goverment unto its own people. These nations were then banned from Trans-Nineveh and nationals of Engellex must be out of the nation by the end of the month.

The Minister of Foreign Relations, Leon, Mardsen, spoke to the public this afternoon during a conference in Nakoda on the state of foreign awareness of Akwesasne. When asked about the possiblity of an embargo, the Minister had this to say: "... It's clear that the dictatorial government of an extremist nation is trying to provoke a great deal of important states on the world stage here. By killing their own people and then sweeping the floor with everyone who so much as protests it is undemocratic and dangerous..." As the press conference continued, the Minister was asked what an embargo would bring upon Trans-Nineveh and why the sudden brash decision to implement it. He has this as an answer: "... An trade embargo would defintely slow down the gross monitary movement towards these men in power who should not have had it in the first place. We can only hope for a peaceful solution for the people of Trans-Nineveh in the future. Unntil then, Akwesasne is pushing in the senate and the house of representatives for this embargo to be placed. And we strongly urge for others to follow..."

Despite minor protests in Nakoda by Ninevehan-Akwesasnans towards this possibility of an embargo, the Progressive Conservative Bloc and most of the Liberal-Democrats are already on board to have this set in motion by next week. Other third partis and independents are not so keen on the idea - some calling it "a laissez-faire and temporary solution." Philip Gouldhawk of the First People's Coaltion called it "purely racist." Word will come from the Minister of Foreign Relations at another time in a later issue.

Federal Election Deadline Pulled Back

Chief Governor Wedgel Tadaho II before his address to the UTA this morning

NAKODA, DRYDEN TER. -- A little over two months ago now, this nation's Chief Governor Wedgel Tadaho II had made the official call which would eventually send Akwesasnans to the voting booths this summer. However, during an address to the United Territories this morning, the CG has retracted the deadline from the summer months to as early as May 1st. Tadaho's reasoning for this sudden move is due appease the nation-wide protestation of a long and expensive election on the backs of the hard working every-man of Akwesasne. This move means that Prime Minister Joseph Hendrick will have to pay a visit to Tadaho early monday morning in order to dissolve Parliament now that federal candidates will be set in campaign mode. This election all came about when the Official Opposition of the Chief Governor's government toppled Hendrick's Progressive Conservatives in a non-confidence vote back in november.

"It is my solemn duty as Chief Governor to listen to those who have granted me the honour of holding this position, and those people are Akwesasnans everywhere." Tadaho said this morning during his national address from our nation's capital in Nakoda. "An expensive election in these times of worldly and economic uncertainty cannot be permitted be break the families of our democracy and freedome-loving country. It would be wrong of me to turn around and let this drag on until the late summer months. With that being said, this election date will hereby be retracted to May 1st of 2011."

Attack ads on the part of the Prime Minister's PCB have already hit Akwesasnan airwaves, newspapers and radios condemning the liberal parties in Parliament for forming a "leftist coalition" which have basically forced an unecessary election upon Akwesasnans - something the Prime Minister says is next to useless. "They wanted their election, and now, they got it. Wether or not it will prove to bring about any change will only be seen on May 1st. Personally, I hink this is a waste of time, but democracy is democracy and I am assured that Akwesasnans will show the Opposition what it is that Akwesasnans truly want." The PM commented from Mont-Nouranda today. Liberal-Democratic leader Tom Leclair has tried to stay away from this rumour of a leftist coalition claiming that voting LDP and only LDP is the only way to topple Hendrick's "wreckless conservatives".

The First People's Coalition leader Phillip Gouldhawk and Reformist Allliance leader Wanda Bourne have both fired back at the federal government for having joined into world-politics instead of concentrating on what is important here at home - all depending on what the individual party's manifesto may be. "This election is not only a way to topple Hendrick and his PCB, but to return power to those who were first and to those whohave had their land and culture stripped away from them - the first people - the Native-Akwi." Gouldhawk commented from his FPC stronghold in Mohave, Athabasca.

Despite most of the Opposition (besides the Party for Christian Values, who have remained relatively quiet, so far) claiming that Akwesasnans want Hendrick out, the current polls show the Prime Minister and the PCB at 42% of the national popularity vote which is creeping well into a majority governmnt territory. The LDP is the next most-favored party with 24% in the polls meaning Leclair's Libs will have some heavy ground to catch. The controversial FPC is set in third with an 18% pop. vote leaving the RAP at 11% and the PCV at 5%. Though it's still too early to make an official call, one thing can be said for the Prime Minister: it's better to campaign with a head start than beginning dead-last.
