Lars Rebuffs Trust-Building Measure
At this morning's press conference, the Foreign Ministry announced that the Grand Duchy of Lars has failed to respond to a diplomatic note send by Foreign Minister Jedreck proposing greater cooperation in border affairs. The Ministry spokeswoman said that Minister Jedreck considered the diplomatic overture a failure and will recommend to Prime Minister Musayev that a greater military presence be placed along the frontier.

Press release from the Frontier Police of the Grand Duchy of Lars.

The Border Police, through its spokesman and police chief, invited the Grand Duchy's interior ministry to await the end of the ongoing investigations on the possible collaboration between groups of drug traffickers and the border guards of the Republic of Crotobaltislavonia.
Preliminary investigations suggest in concrete terms the possibility that the various drug traffickers pay the officials of the crotobaltislavonia to be directed to poorly guarded border areas.
For the following reason, the collaboration can not take place in safe criteria for Lars law enforcement agencies.

-Head of the State Police.

Conscription In Doubt
Tomorrow's conscription order is in doubt tonight. The Defense Ministry and the military services continue to scramble to make ready for the influx of new recruits. However, experts are saying that less than half of all young people ordered to report will do so, which would overwhelm police and security agencies. Officials are already laying blame for the policy failure, with most pointing fingers towards the Prime Minister's office. Eduard Frei, leader of the T Alliance - Twents For Crotobaltislavonia, had this to say, "what was Musayev thinking? And why was he even thinking it? He was supposed to step back from his emergency powers on the first of January. There will be a hearing in the Assembly, I guarantee it."

Hamar Sea Showdown Prompts Air Force Modernization Call
With Justosian naval units now in the eastern Hamar Sea and Aurarian naval units responding from the west, a potential showdown is taking shape tonight, one that Crotobaltislavonia will not be able to affect. Armchair generals are calling for action to rectify the situation. "We're a landlocked country. So the Air Force is the way to go here. If Kadikistan would sell us some long-range bombers and anti-shipping missiles, and allow us to overfly their country, we could do some damage." Asked to respond, the Air Force high command would say only that the H2 air base's runway was long enough to accomodate strategic bombers.

New Year's Protesters Arrested
The seven men and three women responsible for the New Years protest in Red Square have surrendered to Banja Luka Police. The men and women, all middle aged parents, were accompanied by their lawyers and political operatives of the Free Crotobaltislavonia Now movement. Sources within the District Procurator's office have leaked that the Procurator has been in contact with the Government and is mulling dropping all charges. "They're just some folks whose kids might be carrying guns in a month. No one wants to put them in jail. Expect the SPA. They want everyone in jail."

The Breaking News graphic appears and slowly fades. Maria, wearing a black commando sweater, blue jeans, and her red sneakers, is standing next to a line of young men and women who shuffle forward every few minutes.

"Good day. I'm Maria Garva and this is CBS Breaking News. At this hour, the Defense Ministry is reporting that over ninety percent of the Motherland's eighteen-year-old sons and daughters have heeded their country's call and reported for duty. However, after consultations with business and religious leaders, and Defense Ministry officials, the Prime Minister's office has decided that all of the young people who show up for service are to have their names checked off and then told to return back to their lives with the thanks of the State."

Maria turns and starts to stroll down the line of young men and women. "As you can imagine, with this much support for the Motherland, a few of these patriots have reacted in anger after being told to go home. Reports of disruptions have come in from across the country." Maria pauses next to a Slavonic peasant girl fresh off the steppe with blonde hair, bright blue eyes, a flat face, and a tall and wide body. Looking up at the girl, Maria says, "this is Svetlana from a farm near Foca. What are you thinking right now? What made you come?"

"My older sister died in Trivodnia. She answered the call to fight the Yids..."

"I heard that!"

Svetlana looks back at an Orthodox Jewish boy with a sheepish expression on her face, shrugs her broad shoulders and says, "you know what i mean." Back at Maria: "what kind of a comrade would I be if I refused this summons."

Maria nods and then asks, "what will you do when they turn you away."

"I will go back to the farm and do my chores. And, God willing, my boyfriend and I will get married and have children. I will serve the Motherland by giving her babies."

Svetlana shuffles out of the frame and Maria turns back to the camera. "The Defense Ministry is now saying that all who refuse to report will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I'm Maria Garva. This has been CBS Breaking News."

A Ministry of Information graphic appears on screen with brass fanfare. The graphic fades to reveal a young Slavonian man sitting at a desk and looking smart in a dark blue suit and tie. He is all business as he arranges his papers and then looks up at the camera.

"Good afternoon, Comrades. And now the news. Chief Cabinet Secretary Radomira Stojanović appeared before reporters immediately after Prime Minister Musayev's address this morning. Secretary Stojanović announced that Presidential and National Assembly elections are now scheduled to take place on February twenty-fifth. The Secretary also said that the Prime Minister, National Assembly members, and other State officials hoped to have a revised Basic Law completed by the election.

"It was no sooner than Prime Minister Musayev announced his plans for Jewish deportations to resume, that Jewish fighters in Orlitz-Slavonia resumed their campaign of violence against government targets. Sporatic firefights between the malcontents and security forces have been reported throughout the day. Before he left for a conference with the Fleurian Republic, the Prime Minister said quote no more games; renegades will be hunted down and if they do not surrender, they will die unquote. Security at the border with the Polesian People's Republic is on high alert to prevent reinforcements from slipping into the district.

"Also making news from Orlitz-Slavonia, General Alexander Radek has released an audio message in which he threatens to quote unleash my Dogs of War on the Yids unquote. Police in Orlitz-Slavonia are discounting the threat, saying that General Radek has no more than a dozen followers at this point in time.

"Closer to home in Banja Luka, Banja Luka Police have announced the capture of Deputy Prime Minister Melchol Tirzah's assassin. Police have identified the suspect as fifty-year-old Marko Radana Zima, a local itinerant with a history of contact with law enforcement. Mr. Zima's family say he has never held anti-semitic viewpoints and that he is a not a violent man. Police have not revealed a motive for the killing.

"And now, an announcement from the Ministry of War."

"Good morning, Comrades. And now the news. Moments ago, the Ministry of War wrapped up its morning press conference. New details have been released about the increased Army presence in Orlitz-Slavonia. Spokeswoman Anselmetti said there are now five infantry combat brigades and special forces assigned to the fourth Corps in the district. She reiterated that the rules of engagement authorize the Army to meet any organized resistance with lethal force.

"Also coming from Spokeswoman Anselmetti, the Ministry of War has picked up news that Gunnland's military presence in Elben maybe increasing in the near future. The spokeswoman said there would be no immediate realignment of forces. However, the intelligence will factor into long-term plans for the defense of the Motherland.

"In other news, the National Assembly has opened debate on clean coal standards..."

Re: Cultural Restoration

The Prime Minister's office has submitted a raft of bills to the National Assembly that would reestablish three cultural organizations in Crotobaltislavonia that have been dormant since the fall of the monarchy. These include a ballet, a symphony, and an equestrian school.

Artists, performers, musicians who are interested in becoming associated with a new ballet or symphony should contact the State Guidance Counselors in their local communities for more information about auditions in the future.

Riders and trainers who are interested in becoming associated with a new equestrian school should contact the Joint Armed Forces Recruiters in their local communities for more information about training in the Kingdom of Elben.

The Free Canton came into possession of a male and female of the world-famous Lipinzer breed of horses last year as part of reparations from the Free State of Trivodnia. These horses and their offspring are expected be the foundation of the new school. No other horses will be considered at this time.

Should these institutions come into being, they are hoped to be the first steps in restoring Crotobaltislavonia's tradition of cultural diversity and excellence as a crossroads of Gallo-Germania.

The Free Canton of Crotobaltislavonia notes the existence of the People's Republic of Justosia. However, at this time, the Free Canton cannot recognize it as the legitimate sovereign government of that land. The Free Canton does offer its encouragement to all of the free peoples of Justosia who seek the liberation of their homeland from the unstable regime in Avalon.

Milica Živković, Grandmaster of the Banja Luka Chess League and CEO of CBS Chess, strongly denies the Elbener charges of rankings manipulations. Miss Živković released a statement:

"Maybe we do things a little different south of the Innensee. But the results are always the same. Crotobaltislavonia has the best players on Europe. Play against us and its checkmate everytime. We'll prove it again, anytime, anywhere."

The Ministry of Culture and Sport and CBS Chess, in the interest of friendly competition and upholding the justice of sport, invites the Elbener Schachbund to send its best player to Banja Luka for a test match against Miss Živković.

The Anti-State, conscious of the history of anti-Masonic pogroms throughout Gallo-Germania and deeply appreciative of the important role that enlightening Masonry played in securing our own freedoms and continues to play in our political life, extends a natural hand of protection over the Jewish people, a community that has suffered a similar history of attempted destruction at the hands of ignorant and hateful demagogues throughout its long and proud history in the face of the most severe of adversity.

As such, the Anti-State proclaims the sanctity of all Jewish life, wherever it may be, and whatever destitutions it might suffer under the current political circumstances it might find itself in.

The Anti-State considers this position to be non-negotiable. Should Jewish communities be denied their existence, we will move strongly to guarantee their existence, against obstacles, if necessary.

We trust the state actors of Gallo-Germania to treat responsibly as regards the question of the Jews.

All-Union People's Commissariat for External Affairs
Wisdom is lost on the self-proclaimed Anti-State. Indeed the world is very well-aware of the depth en ferocity with which the Kadikistani Union has defended its friends in the past. Unlike any other military organisation the Rurikgrad Pact has an unrivalled joint combat experience with unquestionable unity displayed time and time again. We hereby guarantee that our resolve has not weakened since the Six Days War. Should the world require another demonstration of militarized socialist solidarity we'll have no other choice than to oblige.

Should the sovereignty of Crotobaltislavonia be breached by a foreign power this will activate the bilateral defence treaty between the Free Canton and the People's Federal Socialist Republic of Kadikistan. That in turn would activate the whole of the Rurikgrad Pact. The 'obstacles' that the anarchists of the Far East would need to overcome would be nothing less than the People's Republic of Xinhai, The Kadikistani Union and the Northern Cooperatives, not to mention our friends in the Himyar and Gallia. Therefore these treats should be perceived as they are, empty and almost laughable.

The freedom for the Slavonian people to manage their internal household is guaranteed by the Free East and unlike the claims coming from Touzen, ours are not empty.

Signed,
Petar Kujundzic
People's Commissar for External Affairs

Unlike Ivar, the Anti-State has no necessity to summarize the assets available to it for the successful prosecution of its political agenda. Their proven effectiveness in guaranteeing the liberties of oppressed peoples throughout the world speaks for itself, and we are highly confident in their continued effective utilization in the future.

What the People's Commissar for External Affairs should rather be concerned about is the treatment of Jews in the collection of puppet regimes he has seen fit to install throughout Gallo-Germania. Instead of posturing to demonstrate strength in front of an increasingly fractured domestic audience, we encourage him to proactively mediate with the Crotobaltislavonian and Polesian regimes to effect either the humane treatment of Jewish citizens or their ability to emigrate to a location of their choosing.

Whatever the inclinations of the government in Ivar, surely it would not be keen to be seen in association with the antisemitic spooks that have poisoned the minds of the most deplorable men throughout European history.

Milica Živković, Grandmaster of the Banja Luka Chess League and CEO of CBS Chess, has entered into a series of practice games against other masters and students in preparation for the test match against Wilhelm Keith. Miss Živković said, "I am practicing my endgames. Mr. Keith is outmatched and I will finish him quickly. I predict a checkmate in under a dozen moves in Game One."

CBS Chess has relented and agreed to live television coverage of the test match on the condition that Miss Živković's face not be shown. CBS Chess officials arrived in Lenz, Elben this morning and report that the site at the Grand Hotel is acceptable. "Certainly not below a player of Miss Živković's stature. She is used to the best because she is the best."

A Ministry of Information graphic appears on screen with brass fanfare. The graphic fades to reveal a young Slavonian woman sitting at a desk and looking smart in a dark green turtleneck sweater. She is all business as she arranges her papers and then looks up at the camera.

"Good morning, Comrades. And now the news. Yesterday there was another act of disruption by Jewish partisans. The organization calling itself Jews On Buses used its buses to block the southbound lanes of Highway One between Banja Luka and Novi Grad. Traffic was halted for over two hours while highway police and road maintenance responded to the disruption. Police are now reporting the arrest of twenty-one men and women. The Free Jewish Coalition is denying any prior knowledge of the disruption, but says that Crotobaltislavonia should expect more civil resistance in the coming weeks and months.

"Milica Živković, Grandmaster of the Banja Luka Chess League and CEO of CBS Chess, is now saying that she will not arrive in the Elbener resort of Lenz before her opponent, Wilhelm Keith. Officials with the Ministry of Culture and Sport are in negotiations with their counterparts from Elben to try to resolve the scheduling issue. Negotiations also continue over when exactly to the test match between Miss Živković and Herr Keith will actually take place.

"Sources within the War Ministry are saying modernization of the Army is complete. The sources report the Army's combat forces are now organized into four corps, twenty-two brigades, and thirty regiments, The sources also report that production at Tank Plant Number One has reached full capacity and that all front line armored units will be equiped with the M-Two-Kay-Eighteen main battle tank as soon as next month. Air Force modernization is expected to move to the fore in the new year."

The Ministry of Culture and Sport and CBS Chess are proud to announce Grandmaster Miss Milica Živković has taken Game One against Herr Wilhelm Keith. Herr Keith opened the game on white, but Miss Živković immediately took the initiative with the Crazy Ivar Thrust. As usual, Herr Keith played a Retalian Defense but was unable to overcome Miss Živković's random attacks and retreats. The endgame was a classic King's Chase that forced Herr Keith into checkmate.

After the game, Miss Živković had this to say, "Keith was up to his usual tricks on and off the board. He is so transparent, I cannot understand how he is Elben's best. I look forward to beating him in Game Two."

The Ministry of Culture and Sport and CBS Chess are sad to announce that Miss Milica Živković was defeated by Herr Wilhelm Keith last night in Game Three of their test match. With Herr Keith playing white again, both players opened with Thibault strategems, tentatively fencing with each other. A failed Queen's Thrust Gambit by Miss Živković led to a rapid exchange of pieces with Herr Keith that she was unable to recover from. The endgame resulted in Miss Živković being checkmated.

After the game, a multi-day affair due to slow play and inclement weather, Miss Živković had this to say, "Herr Keith's patience paid off for him tonight. I gambled and I lost. But his play is not without weakness. I am already thinking Capa Ferro for Game Four."

"Good afternoon, Comrades. And now the news. International condemnation of Jewish exile from the Motherland continues to grow. The Free Canton recently received correspondence from the so called Anti-State, which called upon Crotobaltislavonia to respect its Jewish population. Chief Cabinet Secretary Stojanović has responded publically by saying quote the Motherland has stopped the forced deportations unquote.

"The National Assembly has approved the Air Force bill by a vote of fifty-two for and fourty-eight against. The bill authorizes extra funding for new warplanes this year. Presently, the Free Canton relies on Kadikistan to patrol its skies and intercept intruders.

"The seven men and three women arrested for the New Year Protest were in court this morning where they were formally charged with protest without permission. After public outcry, the District Procurator for Banja Luka declined to charge the nine with crimes against the state, an offense punishable with the death penalty.

"Before the break, CBS News' Nazario Capaldi has resigned from his position as chief co-anchor with that network amid continuing police investigation of his relationship with co-anchor Maria Gavras. Miss Gavras was murdered earlier this month and the Banja Police are now officially calling Mister Capaldi their prime suspect.

"And now a word from the War Ministry."

The Army's new "Be All That You Can Be" recruitment ad begins.

A young Slavonian woman is sitting on the edge of an overstuffed leather armchair with one leg crossed over the other. She is wearing a chic, dark gray skirt suit with a black undershirt and black high heels. In a matching chair is a middle-aged Yiddish woman. She sits with an air of intellectualism, relaxed and confident. She is dressed more conservatively in a pink pants suit, a grey undershirt, and skin colored high heels.

After a moment of silent conversation with her guest, the Slavonian reporter looks at the camera. "We return to our interview with the Free Jewish Coalition's candidate for President, Professor Lihi Hodiah. Comrade Professor..."

"Dear, we're all friends in Crotobaltislavonia. Please call me Lihi."

"Of course, Lihi, we were talking before about Jewish issues in the Motherland. But let's turn to more technical matters. A raft of amendments to the constitution is due in this week. Official sources are saying that the Prime Minister's powers will be expanded at the expense of the President. Does this concern you?"

"Absolutely not, Vasa. The executive powers will be curtailed, as they should be. But we are also learning that the President will be a handbrake for the State. The President will have the usual powers of a ceremonial head of state. But she will also have the power to refer any act of Government or the National Assembly to the Supreme Court for review before it the act goes into effect. And the twenty-year term should not be taken lightly."

"Of course. And how do you feel about..."

The Ministry of Culture and Sport and CBS Chess are sad to announce that Miss Milica Živković was forced to resign from play last night in Game Four of the test match with Herr Wilhelm Keith. Playing white, Miss Živković opened with Capa Ferra. However, Herr Keith was able to fend off the attack with Retalian before playing a masterful Thibault strategy in the endgame, forcing the capitulation.

After the game, Miss Živković had this to say, "Herr Keith is a capable player. But the match is not over yet. I still have a trick or two up my sleeve. Watch out in Game Five."

Herr Keith leads Miss Živković three games to one in the best of twelve test match.

A young Slavonian man is sitting back in an overstuffed leather armchair with one leg thrown over the other. He is wearing a dark blue suit and brown brogues. In a matching chair is a Germanian man. He too sits back in his chair, finger tips steepled and legs splayed a little, looking relaxed and in command. He is dressed in a black suit with shiny black dress shoes.

After a moment of silent conversation with his guest, the Slavonian reporter looks at the camera. "We continue our conversation with our guest this evening, Eduard Frei, leader of The T Alliance - Twents For Crotobaltislavonia political party. Now Mr. Frei, in a moment I'll ask you about the constitution that is due to be released tomorrow morning. But first, I'd like to know your thoughts about Crotobaltislavonian relations with Fleur, which is just across the border from Sokolov District, where most of Crotobaltislavonia's Twentish GalloGermanians live, including yourself."

"Andreja, as you know, relations with our Fleurian neighbors could be better. But remember, my people have no quarrel with Fleur. Many, many people I know have family and friends on the other side of the frontier from before the fence went up. It was our Slavonian brothers in Banja Luka who decided to make a fight with Fleur that wasn't there before because of their friends in the ... east. Which is why we need more, many more, voices in government. Crotobaltislavonia is a crossroads of GalloGermania and has so much to offer. There are the Slavonians, obviously. The Twentish Germanians, obviously. The Yiddish and other Jews. Our southern Gallo minority. And the Crotobaltian gypsies, who have been here for God knows how long. We have lived together in peace before."

"You mentioned the Yiddish and the Jews? Do you think they still want to live here? After so much strife? With a homeland waiting for them in Polesian?"

"Rubbish, Andreja. Absolute rubbish. Some of the oldest cities and towns in Crotobaltislavonia were founded by Jews. This is as much their homeland as it is ours."
