Pelasgian Empire
Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Public Statement

23th of December, 1956
To whom it may concern.

Kadikistan has no right to dictate to other countries what nations they are free to recognise and which ones they are not. While this commanding, belligerent attitude is nothing new from the hypocritical neo-Imperialists of the far Left, its magnitude and bluntness are so unprecedented that it warrants a clear and direct response. Let us then deliver it unto the Right Honourable Commissar Leninov: the Koinvoulio's legislators shall vote as they see fit, according to their own conscience and to the interests of the Pelasgian Empire, regardless of the empty threats of Kadikistan's oligarchs, as per their oath. Indeed, the only thing Kadikistan has achieved is to push even more legislators in favour of the proposal, by blatantly disrespecting Pelasgian democracy. Furthermore, there is no grounds whatsoever on which Kadikistan can somehow base the claim that recognising a sovereign, independent state is somehow a "path to war," or that sanctioning a criminal regime, which is not part of Kadikistan's territory or under its jurisdiction is in any way a legitimate casus belli.

All countries have the right to their own independent diplomacy, including Saaremaa, though judging by the fact that Kadikistan has released a statement on the matter, whilst Saaremaa itself has not, we would further question just how independent Saarema is. If Kadikistan fails to recognise this basic fact and chooses to go head first into global war, then it is its own choice to start an unjustified and unjustifiable war, and claims of our sound diplomacy and parliamentary democracy being the "path to war" are nothing but pathetic excuses and propaganda. Pelasgia is forcing nobody's hand; Pelasgia's obligations to come to any compromise with Kadikistan with pertinence to the fashion in which the Empire chooses to conduct its diplomacy begin and end in the the Kalahari. Neither Saaremaa, nor Loago, two different, sovereign states, are in that area, and thus our conduct towards them is not restricted by the Status Quo Treaty. Alas, we are forced to reiterate in the strongest terms that which we have said time and time again: Pelasgia's wish for peace and diplomacy to prevail in Europe should not be mistaken for weakness or even the slightest willingness to appease any and all countries breaching customary international law and blatantly disregarding basic human rights.

Signed and Sealed,

Ikaros Dragases

Minister of Foreign Affairs

THE EMPEROR'S SPEECH FOR CHRISTMAS - ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH SLEEPS

Complete transcript of speech given by His Imperial Majesty - Gregory VII of Propontis sleeps at 89
by Daphne Solomontos, Political correspondent

"Our People,

Today we, the Pelasgians, along with all the faithful Orthodox Christians of Europe, celebrate the birth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ of Nazareth, who would go on to sacrifice Himself for our sins. From the sacred Temple Mount in Hierosolema, to the Areopagus at Anthene; from the Hagia Pronoia in Propontis, to the isolated Convents of mountainous Moesia, His message has reached us all, through the mouths of His apostles and from the mouths of the clergymen and nuns of his Great Propontine Church. Regardless of our mother tongue, we are all united in the spirit of charity and love, that the gifts of the three Magi and the care of Joseph for his foster-son respectively exemplify. We think it not too bold to say that there are none among the faithful who cannot benefit from aspiring to the example of Christ's humility, for the King of Heaven was born in a mere stable, along with the lesser creatures of God.

In these times of trouble, of bloodshed, of terror, of poverty, and of depravity, we should all be grateful for this moment of peace and warmth, and we should savour the familial, communal, and friendly bliss that Christmas brings with it. Amidst this celebration of Christian values, We promise to continue upholding the laws and commandments of the Lord, and to faithfully represent the Sacred and Indivisible Holy Triad on this earth, so as to deliver the sinful and the fallen from the plight. In becoming a father, We now feel the weight of the responsibility more sharply than ever before, and We vow to work twice as hard towards the goal of being a true shepherd to God's flock.

Of course, we could never hope to achieve this without the aid of the ever vigilant and caring men and women of the Church, as a shepherd cannot protect his sheep without the aid of his most loyal and true friends, his dogs. One such watchdog of men, the noble and caring Ecumenical Patriarch Gregory VII of Propontis was sadly and suddenly taken from us, as he slept in the early morning hours of this very Holy Day. His duties will temporarily be carried out by the Metropolitan of Therme, the Empire's Co-Reigning City, until such a time that We, at the advice of the Holy Synod of Bishops, have chosen a man worthy of succeeding such a dedicated servant of God.

Patriarch Gregory came to Us from a small chorion, a village near the town of Nestane in Euxenia's rural, mountainous centre. His dedication and piety earned him the love and respect of all in his church and in his community, and he soon rose to lead the faithful of Telmessus, the Pearl of the Long Sea, where he had lived and studied for many years, though it was in the Convent of Saint Spyridon in the Glaretzides Isles that he first earned his clerical name. His All-Holiness presided over the Great Church of Christ in Propontis in many times of hardship and peril, through wars, disasters, attacks, and tests of faith, but his resolve always enchanted the pious men and women of Tiburia. Even with his last words, he expressed his fear for his flock, for his unwavering concern about their plight was always what set him apart from other religious leaders. Now he sleeps, and awaits the Resurrection of the Dead that was promised, being at last reunited with his maker in Heaven, so that he reap the crops of a virtuous and good life.

We, along with all of Our Family, wish upon all Pelasgians, as well as all the followers of the Faith on Europe, a Merry Christmas."

NORTHERN PELASGIA CLAD IN WHITE

Snowy weather surprises authorities and citizens alike
by Demetrios Kouveles

In a highly unexpected event, most residents of Pelasgian territories on the Long Sea woke up to find their cities, towns, and villages covered in white, as the north coastal areas of Pelasgia, from Diospolis to Heracleopolis, as well as the Archipelago's islands, have been covered by snow. At the same time, the more southern, inland areas of Pelasgia, most of which have traditionally seen snow, being mountainous, with the exception of the arid west, have seen an unprecedented wave of snowfall and snowstorms, leaving local authorities oblivious as to how to deal with the resulting problems. In Aethyia, two major road networks connecting the Theme with the neighbouring Pierrheia and Euxenia have seen numerous accidents and have been temporarily closed down, while entire Nomarchies (Prefectures) of more mountainous Themes, such as Pierrheia, Euxenia, Mopsia, Brennia, and Euroia, have been cut off. The Imperial Police and Imperial Land Army have been brought in to aid in reopening the temporarily obstructed infrastructure networks of the country.

Despite creating quite the headache for the Imperial Ministry of the Interior and the Imperial Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, this unprecedented snowfall has at least allowed schoolchildren across the nation to rejoice, as what would have been the first day of classes for the current semester has had to be cancelled in many parts of the country, as most children in the coastal areas of the Empire are not familiar with walking on ice and snow, leading to fears of injuries, while in others parts of the country school is simply inaccessible for the vast majority of students. To ease the worries of parents and teachers alike, the Imperial Ministry of Education has made it clear that all schooldays that have had to be cancelled due to snowfall will be made up for with extra hours of schooling for the rest of the school year, and possibly less vacation time for Easter and Summer. International Politics - The conflict in Saaremaa flares up as accusations of war crimes surface on both sides. International support for the Saare resistance against Kadikistani occupation draws thousands of international volunteers, while rumours of weapons shipments from the Empire and the other Trier Concord states, as well as growing voices for the creation of a Pelasgian volunteer force, leave the public wondering what Pelasgia's official stance on the conflict is. International Politics - Political crisis in Trivodnia seems inevitable, as the left and right fight over changes to the country's constitution, and public sentiment wavers between maintaining and abolishing constitutional neutrality in the face of Marxist-Leninovist aggression. [page 7]

CHAIRMAN BOGITZIS STRIKES BACK AGAINST GOV'T TOLERANCE OF REACTIONARIES

DKKP responds to Reactionary Legion by creating own Foreign Brigade & question Gov't in Parliament
by Demetrios Kouveles

For weeks, the Propontis regime has simply watched with pleasure, as the innocent common people of Cumbria are subjected to the boundless cruelty of fascism. The Internationalist Communist Party of Pelasgia, tired of the spineless wavering of the Social-Capitalists who form the lesser half of the Imperial apparatus’s executive branch, has decided to firmly respond to reactionary attacks upon the sole legitimate government of all of Cumbria: the Democratic Republic of Cumbria, led by General Roman Becker and supported by the Glorious Leader of the Kadikistani Revolution, Comrade Leninov.

This decision comes in response to the formation of a reactionary group of mercenaries, junta-sympathisers, and social-capitalists, calling itself the “Pelasgian Volunteer Legion,” which departed yesterday from the port of Propontis, numbering three and a half thousand vicious lackeys of the capitalist system. The DKKP, under the leadership of Chairman Ioannis Bogiatzis, and with the support of the unjustly imprisoned former leaders has put together a recruiting programme for Pelasgian International Brigades, the first of which, numbering three thousand and two hundred men, has been put together and will ship off to Cumbria from Leontis tomorrow.

In the Koinovoulio, the legislative segment of the Imperial regime’s political apparatus, the DKKP’s Chairman submitted an official question to the government, demanding to know precisely what the Propontis government’s position on the Cumbrian Insurrection was. In the heated debate that followed, lasting over an hour, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ikaros Dragases, stated that “the Empire [sic] currently remains neutral on the issue of the Cumbrian Civil War [sic], but we have repeatedly urged all parties involved to peacefully work together to create a state which would represent all Cumbrians.” In response, Comrade Bogiatzis pointed out that such a state already exists, and is being undermined by reactionaries from across Europe, with the silent tolerance, if not support, of the Imperial regime. GRAND NAVAL REVIEW IN PROPONTIS

Naval show of strength, aerial need for modernisation
by Konstantinos Kalamariotes, Defence analyst

Yesterday, a Grand Naval Review was held to celebrate the successful fulfillment of the Empire’s Naval Modernisation and Expansion goals for 1956. The First Fleet of the Imperial War Navy, the oldest and mightiest of the Empire’s fleets, in the attendance of His Imperial Majesty, paraded off the harbour of Propontis, putting its newly acquired warships on display for all to see, as they sailed through the Strait of Hellē between Propontis and Chalcedon, their destination being Sestos, the Fleet’s headquarters.

The Review was led by VPP Poseidōn, the lead ship of the new Poseidōn class of aircraft carriers. The crown jewel of the Empire’s naval might, the Poseidōn will serve as the new flagship of the First Fleet, replacing the older VPP Andronikos II Komnēnos, a Nymphē class aircraft carrier. Following the Poseidōn was VPP Attalos Laskaris-Komnēnos, a Laskaris class guided missile battleship, the lead ship of a new class of warship which is unique in the world. Though not actually a class of its own, but, rather, an upgrade of the older Komnēnos class super dreadnoughts into modern missile-focused warships, the new class is meant to symbolise the transition from the Komnenian Propontine Empire into the Laskarid Pelasgian Empire. The VPP Attalos Laskaris-Komnēnos, which is named after His Imperial Majesty, is captained by the Emperor’s half-brother, Theodōros Laskaris-Phouskarnakēs.

Five more Poseidōn class aircraft carriers are under construction by Imperial Shipyards A.E., one of which is meant for export to an ally, though the specific ally has not been named, while three more of the five Komnēnos class battleships will be converted into Laskaris class guided missile battleships, the fifth one, VPP Andronikos III Megas Komnēnos, named after the late Emperor, will be turned into a museum ship, while still in official active service, becoming the sixth such commissioned warship in the Imperial War Navy, along with the Trireme Pampelasgias, the quinquereme Valentios, the dromon Himerios, the classic frigate Amphitrite, and the dreadnought (technically an armoured cruiser) Isaakios IV Komnēnos.

These capital ships were followed by the fleet’s new guided missile cruisers, twenty-four warships belonging to the Pityoussa, Prinkiponēsoi, and Chalkonēsoi classes of cruisers. These newly commissioned ships represent the cutting edge in cruiser technology, being able to easily dispatch any and all traditional gun cruisers, as well as any other ship that gets within the range of their missile systems, with ease. Complementing the First Fleet’s new cruisers were the Anthene class anti-submarine frigates, and the Megas Doux, Nerēis, and Arethousa class guided missile destroyers, which are meant to complement the existing Lythe class destroyers. The Lythe class form the backbone of Pelasgia’s destroyer force, and most expected to be converted into the new Himerios class of anti-submarine destroyers by 1960.

Complementing the First Fleet’s surface fleet were a pack of newly completed Oceanus Class Submarines, a revolutionary class of underwater boats which are powered by diesel-fueled electric generators, allowing them to remain submerged in extreme depths for prolonged amounts of time. While rumours of another new class of submarines have been circulating, no such boats made an appearance in the Grand Naval Review; instead, the attending crowds were captivated by the Naval Aviation Arm’s brand new Eiffellander-made Sturmvogel fighter jets, which were purchased as part of an agreement between the two allied nations. The jets, which are based on the VPP Poseidōn, flew over the harbor at astounding speed, impressing all those attending, including His Imperial Majesty. The Sturmvogel jets were followed by indigenous Pēgasos Xiphias carrier-based jet fighter-bombers, which took part in the Pacification of Philistaea during last year’s Augousto-Septemvriana. The review was concluded with a parade of the Imperial Marines’ First Marine Division across the Propontine side of the Strait.

Being an important part of Pelasgian naval culture for centuries, the Grand Naval Review has always attracted thousands of Pelasgians from all corners of the Empire, and this year’s Review was no exception. As usual, excitement of defence analysts with the Empire’s naval capabilities, and sentiments of national pride were mixed with protests and lamentations of the Empire’s aging air fleet, especially by Senators who are former officers of pilots of the Imperial Military Aviation, such as retired Pterarch (Air Chief Marshal) Iakōvos Vrettakos, who caused a stir in the Senate last year upon saying that “the Land Army stands ready to defend the Empire’s land borders, and the War Navy rules the seas, but the Military Aviation’s bases could easily be mistaken for a junkyard.”

To placate such doubts, the Imperial Ministry of National Defence has announced that by the early years of the upcoming decade, the Empire will have provided her aerial forces with a new jet fighter-bomber as its primary fighter, putting the rotor planes which currently make up more than half of the Imperial Military Aviation’s air fleet to rest. In what many consider to be a surprising development, Imperial Authorities have almost confirmed that the plane will be the new Adamidēs-Aetos S.56, the automobile group’s first plane. Though virtually all of the Empire’s aviation contracts have traditionally gone to Pēgasos A.E., the main competitor of the Kerasuntine automobile group, the delays and failures to produce any satisfactory designs by the former have allowed to latter to bring the two companies’ rivalry in the automobile industry into the aviation sector, gaining a firm foothold.

While the majority of the Imperial Military Aviation’s aircraft will probably still be 1950s Pēgasos jet fighters and fighter bombers by the time the S.56 is introduced, it will come to dominate the air force’s ranks by the end of the 1960s, signaling grave problems for Pēgasos’s already struggling aerial sector. The import of carrier-based aircraft, something which would previously be unimaginable, is further proof of Pēgasos aerial branch’s precarious state. One might rightly wonder as to how the Pelasgian automobile giant will manage to salvage its aviation branch. [continued on page 2]

WORKERS SEIZE THE MEANS OF PRODUCTION!
Unpaid workers take over shut down prinery in Anthene, Æthyia
by Christos Papanikolaou, Political correspondent

The phenomenon of factories being closed down due to economic troubles in Pelasgia is far from new; the capitalists in control typically take their capital and start a new business, while the old workers are left unpaid by the bankrupt company, a legal person of its own, which uses its remaining funds to pay off any debts to the state and to banks, leaving the workers out of work on a day's notice and with nothing to fend for themselves, typically after days or weeks with no pay. The issue has been brought forward by both the Socialist Labour Party of Pelasgia (SEKP) and the Internationalist Communist Party of Pelasgia (DKKP) in the Koinovoulio several times, in addition to being constantly scrutinised by intellectuals and other independent commentators, but complaints over Pelasgian labour law have failed to illicit change by the Liberal Union-dominated Coalition Government, which remains committed to "protecting domestic industry, safeguarding personal economic liberty in a free market, and attracting foreign investment to Pelasgia through preferable work conditions," such as the recent opening of factories by Gallo-Germanian automobile companies and other heavy industries which find their home countries' increasingly service-dominated economies too expensive for them to successfully compete with foreign production.

And yet, with the Imperial authorities showing their complete disregard for the Pelasgian working class, especially the citizens of the parangoupoleis, the industrial slums where many low-wage or unemployed unskilled workers live and work, residents of the parangoupolis of Asbestopyrgos, in Metropolitan Anthene, have taken over their old prinery and started operating again on their own. The prinery has actually managed to turn a profit again, which is especially surprising considering the labour model chosen by these workers: all employees, regardless of their position or skill, are paid the same, and the workers together make decisions for their business. The workers have formed a separate "Union" (Syndikato) which they claim is distinct and separate from the "bought out, corrupt Typographic Workers' Union". The incident has inspired workers across Atthis, the traditional region of Æthyia where Anthene, Anaktora, and certain other cities are located, to threaten similar action in case their concerns and demands are not addressed by the authoerities or their employers.

In the meantime, Imperial Police are patrolling the area and have made their presence visible, though they have not yet attempted to surround the factory. The Typographic Workers' Union (ESTE) and the SEKP have condemned this action as "unilateral, illegal, dangerous, and illegitimate", calling on the workers to negotiate peacefully and legally for their "legitimate grievances", while the DKKP has stated that "while the growing class awareness exhibited by these prinery workers is commendable, the circumstances are not yet ripe for the Revolution to occur." The government has so far declined to comment on the issue, though the Prime Minister met with the Minister of Public Order and Citizen Protection on Sunday. Despite these official condemnations, workers across Atthis and the rest of Æthyia are slowly but steadily expressing their support for the "Independent Labour Union of Prinery Workers of Asbestopyrgos". "We are interrupting our scheduled broadcasting to transmit a piece of breaking news to you. Thank you for your understanding. My name is Prokopios Charalampides, and this is VIRT 4, the international broadcasting service of the the Imperial Radio and Television Foundation. It was just announced by the Holy and Sacred Synod, which is convening at the Ecumenical Patriarchate's Temple of Saint George, that Metropolitan Archbishop Eustathios II of Therme and all of Pierrhea has been recommended by the President of the Synod, Patriarch Nikodemos IV of Edessa on the Orontes, to His Imperial Majesty as the successor of Ecumenical Patriarch Gregory VII of Propontis, in accordance with the wishes of the Synod of Bishops. While the Emperor can technically elevate any bishop of his choice to the Patriarchal Throne of Propontis at his own discretion, no Emperor has gone against the recommendation of the Synod in centuries. We will come back to you with more information as soon as possible."

Normal broadcasting resumes with the reading of Ioannes Ioakovides's play Ho Pareisaktos, until another news flash interrupts the play's reading.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we are interrupting our scheduled broadcasting once again, this time to inform you that His Imperial Majesty's representative, the Curopalate, has publicly announced the confirmation of Archbishop Eustathios II's election to the Patriarchal Throne of Propontis. The Patriarch is to be sworn in tomorrow morning, in the Imperial Cathedral of Hagia Pronoia in Propontis. Thank you for your understanding, and have a good night."

O LORD, PRESERVE HIM, UNTO MANY YEARS!

Eustathios II of Therme now Ecumenical Patriarch of Propontis
by Artemios Gletsos

Today morning, Metropolitan Archbishop Eustathios II of Propontis was ordained Eustathios of Propontis, succeeding Gregory VII as Ecumenical Patriarch of Propontis. In strict accordance with tradition, His All-Holiness's ordainment ceremony took place in the Hagia Pronoia, the Imperial Cathedral of Propontis, the Ecumenical Patriarch took his oath in the presence of the Emperor and the other Patriarchs of Orthodox Christendom, all of them dressed in white and golden amphia of Propontine silk, wearing their jewel-ornamented golden mitres, and holding their sceptres. The choir of the Cathedral then sang the Patriarchal Polychronion, as the Emperor placed the mitre of the Ecumenical Patriarch on the head of His All-Holiness, the latter rising after the chant's end and walking delivering prayers and blessings for the Empire and all of Europe. His All-Holiness was then greeted by a large crowd, being flanked by palm branches on each side, as Christ had been upon his entry into Hiersolyma.

The Ecumenical Patriarch went on to visit the Patriarchal Orphanage of Saint Spyridon, the Patriarchal Hospital of Saint Anargyroi, the Patriarchal Academy of Propontis, and the Great Patriarchal School of the Nation, as per tradition. During his visit in the Academy, the Patriarch made it clear that he had no intention of withdrawing the Church's ban on the book "The Heartache of Mary", which has been submitted by the Academy of Anthene for consideration of the committee awarding the Brienne Award of @ , as well as its anathema on the book's author, Theochares Sartzetakes. He then went on to welcome the envoy of @ to the Ecumenical Patriarchate, and to appoint His Holinness, Quintus II, as Catholic Patriarch of All Marken in the North. Finally, before retiring to his private chambers, His All-Holinness indicated that the Patriarchate intends to be active in its protection of the faith from persecution across the world, as well as internal division, corruption and heresy, while taking particular interest resolving the dispute between the northern Patriarchates over the Sees of Trivodnia.

His All-Holiness is expected to announce the composition of the Permanent Patriarchal Synod, which is staffed by Logothetes and other important officials of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, acting as the Patriarchate's de facto government and administration, while the creation of a new Logothesion tasked with dealing with dogmatic divergences and corruption, in coordination with the Logothesion of the Dogma and the Logothesion of the Praetorium. The expansion of the Church's humanitarian, missionary and social efforts is also in order, according to trusted sources. The extremely active and energetic display of His All-Holinness in his very first day of office is considered by many to be indicative of a shift in Church policy, away from a mere symbolic and passive tolerance or reforms, into an active role of influencing public opinion, taking part in public debate, promoting traditional values, expanding Orthodoxy, and resisting the increasing secularisation of Pelasgian Society. The Koinovoulio, the Empire's Common Parliament, approved a major set of sanctions against @ , in response to the country's refusal to release journalists and humanitarians which it illegally arrested after a large-scale raid against the offices of the Associated Press and European Press Agency in Villesen, the Democratic Republic's capital city. The package comes after Villesen's blatant rejection of a de facto diplomatic ultimatum by Eiffelland and Pelasgia, as well as months of unaddressed reports of human rights abuses, amounting to near genocide, by the Serazinist regime.

As part of the package, Serenierre has been designated as a parriah state, with the Imperial embassy in Villesen being reduced to an Honourary Consulate and temporarily withdrawn for consultation with the government, with the Empire temporarily ceding its representation in the Democratic Republic to the embassy of @ , in addition to the the diplomatic mission of Serenierre being reduced through immediate deportations of several of its officials, pending a possible full deportation, according to political insiders in Propontis. Additionally, the ambassador of Serenierre has been summoned by His Imperial Majesty to answer for his government's actions.

The package also levies a new tax of 25% on all imports from Serenierre, including an outright ban on certain imports, as well as a ban on several exports to Serenierre, including weaponry, with additional restrictions on non-prohibited exports, as part of its parriah state status. Moreover, visas from Serenierre have been cancelled and the issuing of new visas has been temporarily put on hold, with preference being given to political dissidents and Burgundian minority members from Serenierre as refugee applicants; Pelasgian citizens have also been recalled from Serenierre.

The Imperial Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ikaros Ioannou Dragases, admitted that the package, which was introduced and passed nearly unanimously in day's time as an Imperial Decree, had been in the government's drawers for a long time, stating that "these sanctions have been in the making for a long time, as Serenierre continues to defile its own citizenry and show blatant disrespect for the international community," before adding "Enough is enough; we shall no longer stand by idly while the Generalissimo in Villesen acts in a manner befitting the Dictator of Chetnik. We await similar responses from our international partners." The leader of the Internationalist Communist Party of Pelasgia, one of the few forces in the Koinovoulio to vote against the Decree, retorted by saying that "the Propontis regime continues to distabilise Europe and lead it on the path of war, by challenging states such as Serenierre for merely protecting their citizenry from the machinations of the global capitalist cliques."

While these sanctions are extremely severe in and of themselves, government circles have implied that far more severe measures might be coming Villesen's way if it fails to fall back into line with customary international law. Sheridan, a country widely considered to be funding global far-left terror, has also been mentioned as a possible target of future Imperial sanctions. [continued on page 2]

GOVERNMENT OF SERENIERRE
COMMISSARIAT FOR EXTERNAL RELATIONS

PUBLIC STATEMENT

22. Février. 1957

Upon instruction from
Généralissime Nicolas E. Serazin, the following statement has been issued:

The People's Republic condemns the actions of the Propontis regime. The imposition of sanctions on the lawful exercise of sovereign state power by Villesen is an undue intrusion into our domestic affairs by a corrupt, backward regime which is desperate to safeguard its precarious ideology.

The People's Republic shall, henceforth, officially break diplomatic relations in toto with the illegitimate usurpers of power in Propontis. All trade links shall be broken and the People's Republic shall no longer engage in mercantile relations with the regime of that most horrible land.

THE LIBERAL UNION LIVES UP TO ITS NAME

Gov't focus on defence, reduced funding for entitlements
by Anaxandros Xanthos, Political correspondent

After months of dancing to the tune of the socialists and their covert counterparts, who like to style themselves "reformed liberals," the Liberal Union has returned to its historical roots, with Sophokles Krevatas mimicing the classical liberal policies of his father, the late Aristeides Krevatas, one of the few modern Pelasgians to be awarded the title of "Ethnarch," or "leader of the nation," by the Pelasgian public psyche. Thus, the government has finally decided to honour the social contract, focusing more of the Treasury's funds towards the defence and public security of the nation, with the Imperial Armed Forces, the Imperial Intelligence Service (VYP), and the Imperial Police. To compensate for this increase, the government has decided to increase university tuition, increase hospital and clinic fees for minor treatments, scrap plans to increase health coverage and to reduce healthcare costs in the nation's poorer districts, as well as to reject a proposal for the public insurance provider, the Vasilikos Organismos Koinonikes Asphalises (VOKA), to cover costs of medication for all citizens.

These moves have generated protests by the Socialist Labour Party (SEKP), the coalition government's junior partner, raising the already considerable tension between the the governmental partners. However, SEKP cannot afford a snap election due to its current internal division and public dissatisfaction with its policies, which would especially increase if it were to compromise government unity during an ongoing diplomatic crisis with the People's Republic of Serenierre; Mr. Krevatas is aware of this, and has taken advantage of it repeatedly, as was seen during the Angelopoulos prinery incident, with each classical liberal policy pushed through the Koinovoulio by his administration binding the two parties closer together, and increasing the dependence of SEKP on the Liberal Union.

Moreover, this new shift in policy has drawn support from the market liberal Mercantile Union, as well as the conservative National Rally and the Nationalist Party, the latter two lamenting reduced social coverage but praising the government's focus on the nation's security and its global role in fighting the expansion of Communism across Europe. As one would expect, the International Communist Party of Pelasgia (DKKP) protested this decision most vehemently. Likewise, many commentators have grown concerned at the increased spending of the clandestine activities of the VYP, which has been criticised for its lack of public accountability. Reports of Pelasgian arms and equipment being seen in Cumbria have been dismissed by the government, and the Koinovoulio rejected the DKKP's proposal for the formation of a special committee to examine the issue, but that has done little to silence the critics of the VYP and the Imperial ministry of National Defence. Transcript of the evening news broadcast of VIRT 1 of Thursday, March 9, 1957 [Translated to Engellexian].
This transcript is hereby entered into the VIRT Archives with the serial number ΑΠΔ/ΡΣ1/09/03/1957 and is classified as: PUBLIC
Propontis, Thursday, March 10, 1956.

"Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, this is the Imperial Radio-Television Broadcasting Foundation and you are listening to our evening news broadcast for Thursday, March 9, 1957. This morning, the Imperial Police's Inquisitive Committee delivered its final judgement on the three Special Constables brought before it with relation to the the death of a prinery worker. According to the Plaintiff, the worker's wife, the worker died as a result of an allergic shock due to coming in contact with great amounts of teargas as well as repeated strikes to the head, arms and torso by the batons of two of three Constables. The Committee found that while the strikes did cause pain to the worker, they were not fatal, and they were also necessary, as the worker had been resisting arrest, as per the testimony of his colleagues, and was in the proximity of several blunt objects which could be used as weapons, leaving the Constables with no choice but to use force.

"The Committee judged that it was the allergic reaction to teargas that put an unfortunate end to the young man's life, after hearing the opinion of the physician who conducted the autopsy and two more medical experts. The Plaintiff then asserted that the two Constables had a duty to take the man out of the building immediately, and acted negligently, resulting in the man's death. The Committee sided with the Defence, finding that the Special Constables had no specific responsibility to move the man out of the building immediately, since they lacked the medical expertise to see that he was having an allergic reaction, and had to detain other suspects. The third Special Constable, who was the Anthypastistes (Warrant Officer equivalent) responsible for the use of teargas against the building, was found to have not made excessive and unwarranted use of teargas, since no incidence of death due to teargas allergy had ever been reported in Pelasgia before, and the teargas had to be used to rapidly evacuate the building for the security of the Constables and the workers themselves.

"Though all three men were found not to be at fault by the Committee, the Committee's report stressed the importance of learning from these events and re-evaluating riot police methods in future cases. The Committee recommended attaching physicians or adequately trained medics on a squad level (instead of a platoon level) and moderating the use of teargas or inquiring into the methods, costs, and possibilities of production of a non-allergic version of teargas. The Plaintiff attempted to appeal the decision, but the civilian Court of Appeals of Anthene rejected the appeal on the same day, as the appeal's sole claim of the Inquisitive Committee being "biased" was found to be unsubstantiated and inadmissible. Peaceful protests had already been occurring outside the General Police Directorate of Atthis before the judgement was made, though riot police were able to push the protest line back two streets away from the building's cordon before the judgement was announced by using teargas. When a group of youths attempted to incite a riot after the decision was announced, they were quickly detained and are currently in custody.

"The trial of the arrested prinery workers with regard to their alleged illegal occupation of the Angelopoulos Prinery in Asbestopyrgos, an industrial suburb of Anthene, is due to commence tomorrow, after a hearing took place last week. Moving on the the Brienne Awards for 1957 in @ ..."

PRINERY WORKERS CONVICTED – REMAIN DEFIANT!
Go on hunger strike & call for solidarity due to “inhumane” treatment
by Christos Papanikolaou, Political correspondent

The Mixed Jury Court of Anthene has found the twenty-four prinery workers which were occupying the Angelopoulos prinery in Asbestopyrgos guilty of illegal occupation of a private building, of inciting riots and unrest, of resisting arrest, and of attacking officers of the law. All of the workers have been sentenced to ten years in prison with a five year parole on the condition of good conduct, with the men being returned to the Perdiccas Correctional Institution and the women being sent to the Eurypyle Correctional Institution. The workers will also have to issue a public apology to multiple parties.

An attempt to appeal the decision based on “biased and unfair treatment” failed, as it was rejected by the Court of Appeals of Anthene. In response to this rejection, the workers have decided to go on a hunger strike, calling for public solidarity, especially among their fellow workers, through the mouth of their lawyer, Public Defender Gregorios Lazarides. The workers issued a list of demands including “(1) stopping the relocation of the female workers, (2) launching an investigation into police violence against prisoners, (3) accepting an appeal of the court’s decision, (4) paying them their dues for their work, and (5) bringing the owners and managers of the prinery to justice”.

The President of the Mixed Jury Court, Justice Dionysios Poulopoulos has warned the Public Defender against publically reiterating the workers’ demands and their call for solidarity, on penalty of being charged with contempt of court, with the Public Prosecutor stating that a charge of sedition may be added if the workers spark another wave of riots and civil unrest. As rumours of illegal strikes and lockouts continue to mount, there are reports of the Areopagus, the Supreme Court, reviewing the details of a possible motion to force-feed the workers, despite the reassurances of the official Workers’ Syndiacates (labour unions) that they have the situation under control. ΣΤΑΘΜΟΣ 806
Transcript of the evening news broadcast of Stathmos 806 of Thursday, March 9, 1957 [Translated to Engellexian].
This transcript is hereby entered into the Stathmos 806 Archives with the serial number ΑΠΔ/Ρ/21/03/1957 and is released to the public as the common property of the proletariat.
Propontis, Thursday, March 21, 1957.

"Good afternoon comrades, this is Stathmos 806 and you are listening to our evening news broadcast for Thursday, March 9, 1957. Earlier today, two of the prosecuted prinery workers from Asbestopyrgos died while being force-fed by the Propontine authorities. The workers, along with twenty-two of their comrades, were on a hunger strike since last week, protesting their inhumane and unjust treatment at the hands of the Propontis regime.

"Certain class traitors have attempted to take advantage of the people's wrath to declare sudden strikes without the consent of the Workers' Syndicates, fragmenting the unity of the labour movement, obviously with the covert support of the regime, while others have attempted to give the regime an excuse to use violence against the proletariat, by organising large-scale protests without due notice, at a time when the conditions for a revolution are not yet ripe.

"Whereas the Propontine Crown has suppressed these moves for its own selfish reasons, seeking to safeguard the interests of the industrial capitalists, it has also attempted to satisfy the public with promises of 'inquiries' into the matter. The people reject such farcical notions, as they reject the false idea that bourgeois 'democracy' can free them of their chains! Once the conditions are ripe, the people shall rise to crash the bourgeoisie and their lackeys!

"The Internationalist Communist Party of Pelasgia, the sole true representative of the people's wish for a Socialist Democratic Republic, has called for a protest on the day of the workers' funeral, along with a day-long strike, with the consent of the Workers' Syndicates, to demonstrate to the unity and might of working class to the bourgeoisie, and to show solidarity with our comrades in the regime's hellish prison at Perdiccas! Workers of the world unite!

"
Arise, ye prisoners of starvation!
Arise, ye wretched of the earth!...
"

EDESSINE HERETIC TO APPEAR BEFORE COURT!

Charged with illegal translation of Holy Bible to Demotic Pelasgian
by Artemios Gletsos

Miss Pēnelopē Kokkinou is set to appear before the Mixed Jury Appellate Court of Anaxandria on the Pinarus on Monday, following an appeal of her conviction by a lower court by the public defender, Mr. Demetrios Katarrhaktaios. The Appellate Court is set to judge whether Ms. Kokkinou is guilty of a felony, due to her translation of the Holy Bible to Standard Modern Pelasgian, as well as her local dialect of Demotic Pelasgian, without the approval of the Great Church of Christ in Propontis, which is mandated by both Canon Law and secular Constitutional Law, as per article 3, paragraph 3 of the Imperial Constitution, which clearly states that "the text of the Holy Bible is maintained unaltered. Its translation to any other linguistic type without the approval of Great Church of Christ in Propontis is prohibited." In constrast, Ms. Kokkinou's lawyer has argued that his client was exercising her right to free speech, as per article 5 of the Imperial Constitution. In any case, Ms. Kokkinou is currently in custody in her home city of Anaxandretta, partly for her own safety, according to official reports.

The case has drawn considerable attention, as the accused is the adoptive daughter of a brother of the Edessine Patriarchal Order of the Mother of God, working in the renowned Ecclesiastic School of Our Lady the Saviour in northeastern Anaxandretta. Multiple civil rights and opposition groups, as well as certain members of the coalition government's senior and junior partners have voiced their support for Ms. Kokkinou, though the traditionalist right, ranging from the conservatives of the National Rally to the ultra-nationalists of the Nationalist Party have praised Ms. Kokkinou's arrest and prosecution. The issue has greatly divided Pelasgian society, an otherwise traditional and religious society, which simultaneously prides itself in its respect for political freedom, with many government officials refusing to comment so as to not pressure the courts. As reports of Ms. Kokkinou's translated Holy Bible being confiscated, as well as elements of her other religious writings which contain quotes from it, have been seized and handed over to the Church, tensions continue to mount between the state Church and the "Orthodox Reformers" to whom the defendant belongs.

Dr. Theochar
ēs Sartzetakēs, who is currently living in Bourgogne, has openly stated his support for Ms. Kokkinou in an article he published in the last week's Sunday Edition of Laokratia. Pointing out that many of his own writings remain in a legal limbo ever since the fall of the Junta, having been previously listed in the Codex of Prohibited Works, blaming the Orthodox Church's fanaticism and reactionism for the troubles him and other prominent Pelasgian intellectuals have faced and continue to face; "They very same puritans who torched piles of the very same works that earned out language's modern incarnation respect across the overseas ten years ago are now bringing a twenty-three year old girl [sic] to court over translating and interpreting the bible [sic], as if they have any ownership over it," he said in the aforementioned article. A spokesperson for the Edessine Patriarchy replied that "Mr. Sartzetakēs is lucky to have escaped excommunication and is in no position to tell God's One True Church or the Pelasgian Polity how they should enforce their own rules," the first part of his statement probably being a reference to the Chandacian author's controversial and technically non-legal series of books, dealing with altered or 'heretical' version on and views of Christ's life as philosophical parables. To whom it may concern.

The title of the article is needlessly sensational and editorialised, giving the impression that Ms. Kokkinou is being prosecuted for her religious beliefs and not for her failure to attain the consent of the Great Church of Christ in Propontis for her translation of a book which, as far as the Empire is concerned, falls under the intellectual and historical authority and jurisdiction of the Church, as per the Imperial Constitution.

EIGHTH CONGRESS OF THE PELASGIAN LEFT SETS NEW COURSE FOR THE DKKP

DKKP to follow lead of 9th Congress of Kadikistan's KCWP - Small splinter faction breaks off
by Demetrios Kouveles

The 8th Congress of the Pelasgian Left has finally concluded after nearly a week of discussions, in response to the current fragmentation that plagues the Marxist-Leninovist front; it is the first such Congress since the fracturing of the United Pelasgian Left last year, being held by the Internationalist Communist Party of Pelasgia as the sole true successor of the United Pelasgian Left, thought it lacks both recognition and participation from the reactionaries of the Socialist Labour Party of Pelasgia (SEKP). With an attendance of over six hundred Party members, including the DKKP's thirty-one Members of the National Assembly as well as its nine Senators, the Congress debated and discussed the issues surrounding the death of the Glorious Leader of the Global Revolution, the late Comrade Nikolai Leninov, and the resulting change of power and conflicts of succession in the Democratic Republic of Kadikistan.

Ultimately, the Congress decided to echo the sentiments of the declarations of the 9th National Congress of the Kadikistani Communist Workers' Party, recognising the need for the Revolution and its sole ideology, Marxism-Leninovism, to evolve in order to survive and facilitate the liberation of the European proletariat from its chains. Thus, the DKKP has publicly proclaimed its support for the National Committee for Justice and Rejuvenation of Socialism, the lawful authority which has taken over the government of the Democratic Republic during the difficult transitionary period, adopting several reforms to the DKKP's economic, social and administrative plans and programme, in strict accordance with the teachings of Comrade Nikolai Leninov and Comrade Karl Marx. Chairman Bogiatzis went on to publically denounce the vicious oligarchic elements within the clans which have sought to turn the People's Revolution into a feudal system of their own by raising their arms against the Committee, while also denouncing the reactionaries of the self-proclaimed "International" which currently resides in Calidia.

These decisions were opposed by a small minority of six delegates, including one Member of the National Assembly, who have broken off from the DKKP, forming the Popular Union of Workers and Peasants (La
ïki Agroto-Ergatiki Enosi - LAEE). The delegates openly and loudly voiced their opposition to the Party's necessary reforms, insulting the Chairman, Comrade Bogiatzis, before being escorted outside the premises by fellow party members as well as members of the Pelasgian Revolutionary Struggling Youth (Pelasgiki Epanastatiki Agonistiki Neolaia - PEAN). The members then boarded a single taxi and promptly left the premises of the Congress, which was held in the DKKP's offices at 25 Ergatopateron Street, Propontis. PEAN has reportedly placed its headquarters at a small office on 143 Dimon Street, outside which protesters have gathered to denounce the reactionary traitors of the struggling people. The LAEE-affiliated National Assembly Member has since resigned his seat and handed it over to a DKKP Parliamentarian. The DKKP remains committed to the Marxist-Leninovst International, with Comrade Kalogeropoulou, the Party's spokesperson, stressing its renewed confidence in increased electoral gains at the next election.
