SOCIALIST LABOUR PARTY AT BREAKING POINT - ELECTION NEAR?

As the junior gov't partner nears internal collapse, the senior partner adopts an electoral spirit
by Konstantinos Gkiones, Political correspondent

The Socialist Labour Party (SEKP) continues to display an image of disunity and decay, as three more SEKP-affiliated Thematic Bouleutae in Mopsia defected to the Progressive People's Party (PLK). Merely a week ago, seven Thematic Bouleutae in Brennia defected to the Pelasgian Prometheist Party (PKP), depriving the SEKP of its majority in the Theme's Boule and forcing it into a coalition with the broader left. Across the nation, the PLK has attracted many of the traditional working-class supporters of SEKP, not in the least bit due to their uncompromising stance on issues of workers' rights and the open and widely-respected charity works of many of its most prominent members, including the party's current President, Dr. Vartholomaios Lymperopoulos. Dr. Lymperopoulos is the Assistant Dean of Medicine in the Metropolitan Academy of Therme, being widely considered to be the spiritual successor of Dr. Gregorios Papalambrou, the man who invented the Papalambrou Cernival Smear Test, commonly refered to as the Pap Test for Breat Cancer; in recent weeks, the President of the PLK has given multiple speeches denouncing the government's neglect of the Empire's weakest citizens, citing the reduction in public health funds to fund defence as an example of this policy, while also pointing to his own free medical clinic for the poor as a model for fully publicly-funded health in Pelasgia.

The PKP, on the other hand, has managed to attract many of SEKP's urban middle-class Social Democrat and Democratic Socialist supporters, importing a Pelasgised version of Varinia's Prometheism. Its blend of high civil rights, high political freedoms and government intervention to use the market for the benefit of the workers and citizens has earned its rallies rather high attendance in many major urban centres which where up until now seen as unbreachable SEKP storngholds, including Telmessus and Epachthus. Indeed, the lack of a unified front to make demands of the Liberal Union has essentially rendered the SEKP helpless to the market liberal policies of the government's senior partner. As such, many of its voters feel betrayed by its lack of any significant resistance to current government measures seeking to reduce social spending in favour of defence, policing and lower taxes, while even those who understand its 'predicament', so to speak doubt whether a renewed mandate would rid the Socialist Labour Party of its sectarianism and the tensions between the various interests and ideologies it seeks to unite and satisfy under its 'big tent' policy.

To add insult to injury, the Liberal Union is already on an electoral warpath, with Prime Minister Sophokles Krevatas visiting his mother's native island of Chandax to reassure the local supporters and voters of his regard for their concerns and his party's continued commitment to the liberalisation and self-strengthening of Pelasgia. With plans to visit other islands and locations around the country, the government is already beating the drum of an election; and with the right and left still largely divided since the fall of the Militarist Regime, the Liberal Union seems like the only political faction ready for such a prospect. Indeed, if the government is able to cash in on its financial, diplomatic and defensive successes, not least among which is the Pacification of Philistaea and the renewal of the Status Quo Treaty, one could very well expect them to dominate both houses of the Koinovoulio, with more than half the seats. PRIME MINISTER SOPHOKLES KREVATAS DIES OF CARDIAC ARREST

Authorities announce death in official statement - uncertain succession - state funeral planned
by Anaxandra Psarianou, Political correspondent

"His Excellency, Sophokles Krevatas, son of Aristeides and Euridice, of the genus (maternal family) of the Aigadiotai, Citizen and Representative of Leuktron, Prime Minister of the Pelasgian Empire, Grand Cross of the Imperial Order of Saint Valentian the Great, Patrician Nobelissimus (hereditary noble) and Authente (Lord) of Paroreion, Melingia, passed away today, at 1:05 AM, in his cabin aboard the passenger ship Tiverias. His Excellency was provided with medical aid by his personal physician, Dr. Agesilaos Theocharides and the crew of the Tiverias, but was not unfortunately not revived, having passed away due to cardiac arrest. By joint decree of the Koinovoulio and His Imperial Majesty, the Sovereign, a state funeral is to be held for Mr. Krevatas with full honours. According to the wishes of His Excellency's family, the late Prime Minister will be buried in the ancestral seat of the noble family of Krevatas, Paroreion, Melingia, next to His Excellency's father." With these words, the temporary head of His Imperial Majesty's government, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister Ikaros Dragases announced the death of the man who dominated Pelasgian politics for the last two decades to all Pelasgians.

Mr. Krevatas was born in the town of Paroreion, a medieval Propontine fortress where much of the population of Leuktron resided until Leuktron itself was refounded on the once more safe plane below in the eighteenth century. Paroreion was once the seat of the Despots of Melingia, being passed on to the Krevatas family by the the reigning dynasty due to their loyalty and valuable role as Imperial advisers. Raised in the shadow of his father, Aristeides Krevatas, a political giant of modern Pelasgian history, Mr. Krevatas became a noteworthy statesman in his own right, spearheading parliamentary opposition to the Junta's regime while striking a careful balance between the Koinovoulio and the Senatorial elites in particular on the one hand and the Emperor and the military leadership on the other. A father of three children and dedicated husband for over three decades, Mr. Krevatas leaves behind him a loving family as well as an impressive record of political achievements. Though his was not an easy life, he has certainly earned the honour of a state funeral as well as the mourning of the many of the nation's most prominent figures, if not the whole nation itself, in addition to his own family and friends.

Despite the crushing certainty of Mr. Krevatas' death, the only effect the event in question seemed to have had on the Empire's politics is one of crippling uncertainty; with the left and right devided into splinters upon splinters of once mighty factions, the Liberal Union seems to lack unified leadership and to have many heads vying for the same body of voters and legislators. Whether one might look at the Classical Liberals of Mr. Protospathariopoulos or the Modern Liberals of Mrs. Logothetou, or even the more Nationalistic or Welfarist factions on the fringes of the bloc, one thing seems certain: this hydra in conflict with itself can only end up dead or wounded. And with the Liberal Union's unity, the chance for a strong, united parliamentary majority in the Koinovoulio seems to have vanished too. Mr. Krevatas' body might not yet be cold or buried, but the effects of the loss of such a great man for Pelasgia's political scene are already starting to show. [continued on page 2]

In the name of the Committee for Justice and the Rejuvenation of Socialism, the Kadikistani State, the Communist Workers' Party and indeed the Kadikistani people, we hereby wholeheartedly and sincerely offer our condolences to the Pelasgian people and especially those close to the late Sophokles Krevatas. Though we had many differences and even outright conflicts with Krevatas, it is in our nature to show our respects to a strong statesman such as the former Prime Minister of the Pelasgian Empire. He was a man that always acted according to his own ideal and while we truthfully believe he was wrong on many fields, we are convinced that his prime motivator was love for his country. The latter being something every Kadikistani understands and respects. Whomever replaces Krevatas will have big shoes to fill.

Signed,

SEKP FRAGMENTS - SNAP ELECTION TO BE HELD ON SUNDAY

Right and centre unite to stop growing leftist claim to power - Imperial intervention?
by Anaxandra Psarianou, Political correspondent

"Strength in unity," remarked Homer in his ancient writings, but for all their references to ancient texts and events, both the left and right seemed to have learned this particular lesson rather late. As Sunday's snap legislative election nears, the once mighty Liberal Union is on the verge of breakup, its Senators and Representatives flocking to numerous factions and other parties. The Union's breakup was finalised when Ms. Logothetou's Reformist Party (KM) broke off, acting as an independent modern liberal voice in Imperial politics. To the left, SEKP, the largest and most prominent successor of the former United Left, has fragmented into three main factions, as its own parliamentarians flock to Dr. Vartholomaios Lymperopoulos' Progressive People's Party (PLK) and to the Prometheist Party of Pelasgia (PKP). From those few who have not joined any other party, a new party by the name Coalition of the Moderate Left (SEA) has been formed, aiming at capturing the votes of mostly urban and bourgeois centre-leftists.

As the PLK is leading the polls, with workers and farmers from the lower classes flocking to vote in the wake of the Angelopoulos Prinery Incident in Asbestopyrgos earlier this year, the right and the centre seem to have struck an unholy alliance: the classical liberals led by Mr. Protospathariopoulos have joined forces with the conservative National Rally (ES) of ret. special forces Captain Alexios Pantatzes and have formed the National Patriotic Unity Front (EPME), led by Eugenios Chalkondyles, a member of the National Assembly from Acte on the Archipelagot island of Syra. Mr. Chalkondyles is seen as a de facto moderator between the conservative and liberal factions in Pelasgian politics, facilitating their cooperation to avoid a possible left-wing victory. The political fringes, represented by the DKKP and the Nationalist Party also seem prepared for an election, as the former hopes its new platform will attract more voters despite the splitting off of a smaller faction of Orthodox Marxist-Leninovists and the latter hopes the increased threat of internal terror and external Communist aggression will earn it wider support among the voting public.

Due to the political dead end in which the Koinovoulio might find itself, His Imperial Majesty, the Emperor, and the President of the Senate are reported to have secretely met to discuss the Constitutionality of Imperial intervention. The Emperor has also recently held an emergency meeting with the Imperial War Council, but the issuing of an ultimatum by Kadikistan to Bourgogne and the Free States is thought by many to be a more likely reason for the latter meeting. We are shocked and saddened by the news of Prime Minister Kravates’s death. We remember him as a man of stature who carried out his tasks with wisdom, and with the interest of all the Pelasgians and the whole international community in mind. Pelasgia lost a great man with whom we enjoyed cooperating. On behalf of the Government, Parliament and People of Eiffelland, we reach out our condolences to the Government, Parliament and People of Eiffelland, especially to Prime Minister Kravates’s family and friends.

Matthias Graf von Seydewitz, Chancellor

OOC: I don't know if you are going to RP the funeral, or already RPed it, but if foreign delegations are/were allowed and there is no war, my Chancellor will be/have been there to represent Eiffelland.

PYRRHIC VICTORY FOR THE EPME - NEGOTIATIONS FOR COALITION

Well below the 50% mark in the National Assembly, Mr. Chalkondyles needs broader consensus
by Anaxandra Psarianou, Political correspondent

As of the morning of Monday, June 12, 1957, the results of the elections that took place on Sunday have finally been announced. Having united the forces of the classical liberal majority within the Liberal Union and the conservative National Rally, the National Patriotic Unity Front (EPME) led by Eugenios Chalkondyles has barely managed to match the level of support once held by the ruling party of the late Prime Minister, dropping one point below the previous 33% to 32% in the National Assembly. As the Progressive People's Party (PLK) celebrates immense electoral success, having attained 29% of the vote in its first general election, the once mighty Socialist Labour Party of Pelasgia (SEKP) finds itself reduced to 5%, while even the recently formed Prometheist Party of Pelasgia (PKP) has managed to surpass it at 7%. Similarly, the DKKP has fallen to 6%, losing 1% probably due to its fragmentation, change of ideology and the current tensions with Kadikistan. On the other edge of the political spectrum, the Nationalist Party has risen to 8%, while the Marcantile Union remains stable at 16%. The new Reformist Party, a splinter from the formerly dominant Liberal Union, has managed to gather 4% of the vote, becoming the smallest faction in the new National Assembly.

In the Senate, the EPME has garnered support from the Liberal Union and National Rally strongholds in Old Pelasgia, Opsicia and Euxenia, while the PLK has swept accross the Themes formerly dominated by the SEKP, in the south and west of the Empire. The Nationalists have also gained ground, as has the Mercantile Union and the PKP, though both the DKKP and the SEKP have fallen, signifying the withering away of what remains of the United Pelasgian Left. Indeed, the PLK seems to be more a spiritual successor to the vision of Dr. Garyphallides than either one of the actual successors of his movement. The Reformists have only barely made it into the Senate, being far too similar to the SEKP for hardline Liberal Union supporters and far too much like the Liberal Union for SEKP voters.

As the void left behind by the sudden death of Mr. Krevatas becomes all the more frightening, the country finds itself on the brink of war, with a caretaker government largely consisting of the same ministers as the cabinet of Mr. Krevatas having been appointed by His Imperial Majesty until Mr. Chalkondyles, Mr. Lymperopoulos, or any other political leader for that matter, can manage to form a government. On the one hand, EPME has approached the Mercantile Union, the SEKP and, according to rumours, even the Nationalists, about the creation of a Government of National Unity, to avoid the growing power of the populist left, while the PLK has approached all factions on the left about the possibility of a Government of the United Left. Even if either factions manages to succeed in convincing all factions it has addmitted to be courting, the EPME would have a tight and fragile majority of 53% (unless rumours of it courting the Nationalist Party are true, in which case it would be hoping for 61%), and PLK would only manage to gather 51%, provided the reform liberal Reformist Party joins its forces with the left.

With the waters before us remaining treacherous and unclear, another election is expected if neither of the two major political leaders has managed to form a government within 48 hours. Rumours have also surfaced of the Curopalate, the highest court official of the Imperial household, meeting with the Areopagites, the justices of the Empire's Supreme Court, and of the Empress having a private discussion with His All-Holinnes, the Ecumenical Patriarch, as another hung parliament seems closer and closer. "Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, this is the Imperial Radio-Television Broadcasting Foundation. I am Theophrastos Papachelas and you are listening to our evening news broadcast for Tuesday, June 13, 1957. Yesterday, late in the afternoon, Mr. Eugenios Chalkondyles, the leader of the National Patriotic Unity Front, announced to His Imperial Majesty that he was unable to reach an agreement to form a government. While both the Liberal Union and National Rally elements within Mr. Chalkondyles' joint ticket as well as the much weakened Socialist Labour Party were willing to cooperate to form a Government of National Unity, the Nationalist Party refused to cooperate without a guarantee of constitutional reform to remove the provisions of homosexuals' rights and other reforms of family law, which Mr. Chalkdonyles was not willing to provide. In a similar vain, the Mercantile Union's demand for several critical industries which are partly or fully state owned, such as the power network and Imperial Shipyards A.E., to be privatised was refused, being inconsistent with the policy of all three parties willing to form a government. Thus, the National Patriotic Unity Front's leader was unable to gather enough support to form a government.

The burden of forming a government then fell on the shoulders of Mr. Lymperopoulos, the leader of the party with the second greatest number of seats in the National Assembly. While the Progressive People's Party was successful in enlisting the support of the Prometheist Party of Pelasgia and the Reformist Party, both successors of the old United Pelasgian Left refused to back Mr. Lymperopoulos. More specifically, the Internationalist Communist Pa labelled him a "revisionist reactionary in cahoots with the bourgeois establishment", while the Socialist Labour Party of Pelasgia refused to cooperate with what it saw as opportunistic populist newcomers, who would soon fail to deliver on their promises to the Pelasgian people. As such, late in the afternoon of today, Mr. Lymperopoulos also notified His Imperial Majesty of his failure to attain the support needed to form a Government of the United Left. As both sides have made it clear that they will not support a minority government, not that such a government would have a chance of lasting for long in such a tense political climate, the only option now seems to be another election, while a caretaker government under the Areopagus seems destined to continue heading the country's executive, at least for a little longer.

Elections are assumed to be declared shortly, after the remaining political leaders declare their failure to form a government and gain the support of the National Assembly. In other news, the Imperial Armed Forces continue their mobilisation, as people across Pelasgia and Europe wonder whether the ongoing international crisis surrounding Novo Srbja will resolved without the use of arms..."

"Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, this is the Imperial Radio-Television Broadcasting Foundation. I am Theophrastos Papachelas and you are listening to our evening news broadcast for Thursday, June 15, 1957. With a second snap election scheduled on this Saturday, both sides of the political spectrum seem to be consolidating their strength, in preparation for one of the most crucial elections in recent Pelasgian history.

To the left, Dr. Lymperopoulos has openly declared his support for constitutional reform and a possible referendum on the current status of the Monarchy and the Orthodox Church, while also advocating for minority rights in terms of language, religion, education and equal access to public services and employment. He has also vowed to repeal the Semetic Migration Decree, which was passed to restrict the migration of primarily Muslim Urudoah and Jewish persons to the Empire and Philistaea in particular in the wake of the Augousto-Septemvriana. Both the Socialist Labour Party and the Reformist Party have seen their membership and voting power leaking to the Progressive People's Party, the latter being essentially absorbed into the left's leading faction. The Prometheist Party has pledged itself to cooperate with Dr. Lymperopoulos' Progressive People's Party, effectively solidifying its chances of a majority, while the Internationalist Communist Party of Pelasgia is bent on reclaiming its lost seats.

On the right, the Liberal Union and the National Rally have responded by dissolving the National Patriotic Unity Front as well as their individual parties, forming the new Imperial Party, a coalition of the centre-right meant to counter the growing influence of the left. The Imperial Party is considered to be a direct response to those within the Progressive People's Party who seek to limit Imperial influence in politics and to alter the character of the Empire from a Pelasgian-dominated country into a multi-ethnic commonwealth of sorts. In this way, the Imperial Party combines a wish to conserve the socio-economic policies of the Liberal Union as well as a goal to conserve the institutional, cultural and political framework of the realm. Concerned at the prospect of a potential social democratic victory and having been granted assurances of increased and continued liberalisation of large sectors of the economy, the Mercantile Union seems willing to support a prospective Imperial Party government. At the same time, the stance of the Nationalist Party, whose tough stance on several crucial electoral issues seems to have gained it increased support in the previous snap election, remains a mystery.

In other news, the Imperial military has announced its own demobilisation, as the crisis over Novo Srbja has been peacefully resolved. Kadikistan boasts of a victory, but the newfound unity of the Western powers in support of Bourgogne and its desertion by @Sereniere tells another tale..."

"Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, this is the Imperial Radio-Television Broadcasting Foundation. I am Theophrastos Papachelas and you are listening to our evening news broadcast for Saturday, June 17, 1957. The official results for this month's second snap election have finally been announced.

Having won thirty-three percent of the vote, the Progressive People's Party has just earned itself a place in history, being the first left-wing party in Pelasgian politics to have ever led the polls. Though the Imperial Party was able solidify its voter base, it only came in as a close second, securing thirty percent of the popular vote. Moreover, the Mercantile Union's unwavering and rigid stance seems to have made it few friends, its previous sixteen percent having been reduced to a mere eight percent. The Prometheist Party has instead found itself rising to nine percent of the popular vote, equal to the strength of the Nationalist Party's nine percent. The Internationalist Communist Party has managed to reclaim a single percentile point, while the Socialist Labour Party has seen itself removed from the National Assembly entirely. The Reformist Party has managed to maintain its four percent, essentially guaranteeing the democratic faction its majority in the National Assembly.

The Internationalist Communist Party is currently in the process of negotiating the possibility of supporting a minority government led by the Progressive People's Party, with Dr. Vartholomaios offering to ease restrictions on the far-left party and what he has called 'unfair and hostile policies of the far-right Propontine establishment seeking to undermine the DKKP's electoral success'.

In the Senate, however, the Imperial Party and the right have earned a clear majority. More specifically, the Imperial Party has earned thirty-fourt percent of the seats, while the Mercantile Union has earned ten percent of the seats and the Nationalists another eight, leaving the Progressive People's Party with twenty nine percent of senatorial voting power, the Prometheist Party with eleven percent and the Internationalist Communist Party with eight percent. Neither the Socialist Labour Party nor the Reformist Party has earned any seats in the Senate. The right-wing might find itself lacking in the unity required to form a government, but it's most certainly united in its opposition to a left-wing government, vowing to vote down practically and all policies put forth by a prospective left-wing government headed by Mr. Vartolomaios due to their stark opposition in a plethora of core policy issues.

As Pelasgia heads for a constitutional crisis on top of a political one, one cannot help but wonder how the Empire can hope navigate the rather treacherous waters it finds itself in. In other news, Novo Srbja seems to be on the verge of lasting peace, as Novosad and Srbja negotiate after decades of civil war. The Orthodox Church will continue to provide support to the people of the war-torn nation for the foreseeable future, according to sources..."

"Good afternoon comrades, this is the Stathmos 806, the true voice of the Pelasgian proletariat. I am Markos Daphnaios and you are listening to our evening news broadcast for Saturday, June 17, 1957.

Earlier today, we witnessed what reactionaries and revisionists have taken to calling the electoral victory of the first 'leftist' party in Pelasgian political history. Comrades, let us not be fooled by these blatant lies: the Progressive People's Party, the Prometheist Party, the Reformist Party and all such organisations are false opposition groups, under the guidance if not the direct control of the capitalists, meant to steer popular support away from the one true defender of the Pelasgian workers and peasants: the DKKP.

Having recently been honoured by our Kadikistani comrades in being called 'the greatest Communist Workers' Party in Himyar', we cannot let our guard down now, and let the Pelasgian people be fulled into believing the lies of those who seek to postpone and reverse the awakening of the working class's wrath.

While Dr. Vartholomaios Lymperopoulos has naively offered to loosen the noose which the Propontis regime has tied around our neck, to stem our Party's continued growth, in exchange for our support for their revisionist government, we shall not fall prey to such obvious attempts to soil the DKKP's image through convincing us to moderate our stance.

As such we refuse the offer of Dr. Lymperopoulos, like we refused his offer of a ministry in exchange for participating in a coalition government. Moreover, we publicly proclaim for all to hear, through the mouth of our General Secretary, Comrade Ioannis Bogiatzis, that the DKKP shall stand by its unwavering commitment to its policy: No moderation. No revisionism. No bourgeois coalition-building. Only Socialism.

Only through a clear popular mandate, not a meagre electoral 'mandate', and through the people's open seizure of the means of production, under the leadership and guidance of the DKKP, will the Pelasgian proletariat be delivered from its current exploitation and oppression.

As for the 'crisis' the bourgeois system finds itself in, it is merely the result of its own internal failures. Let the workers and peasants of Pelasgia and Europe not be fooled: bourgeois 'democracy' cannot save you. Even if the revisionists manage to form a government, it is doomed to fail as long as it remains within the bounds of the capitalist system; the elitist Senate has already proven this point, as Comrade Bogiatzis remarked, by vowing to block all legislative action by the new National Assembly.

Look not to the Forum of Valentian for salvation. Only you can save yourselves. You have nothing to lose but your chains. Workers of the world, unite!

THE GREAT APOSTASY - PARLIAMENT AT WAR WITH ITSELF
Political crisis turns constitutional as Senate and National Assembly collide
by Anaxandros Xanthos, Political correspondent

The climate of political insecurity and fragility which succeeded the death of Lord Krevatas has seen Pelasgia reduced to lacking an elected government for nearly half a month, with no less than two snap elections taking place with only a week's time between them. With the first session of the National Assembly having failed to produce a government, the first chance for a united government of the left was lost, much to the relief of the country’s political class and the business world, having been ended by the DKKP of all parties. While the initial reactions to the Internationalist Communist Party (DKKP)'s decision were mixed, the events that followed more than vindicated its decision not to be tied to a government lacking a Senatorial majority.

The right wing-dominated Senate has remained steady on its vow to block any and all action of the National Assembly, legislative or otherwise, within its constitutional reach. In the meantime, an interim government headed by the Areopagus, the country’s Supreme Court, continues to head the country’s executive, while the Progressive People's Party (PLK) has made loud and public pleas to the parliamentary minority of the right to grant the PLK and its partners the support needed for a minority coalition government.

On top of top of this flammable and volatile atmosphere, Sunday saw the revelation of the connections of several PLK members which were former members of the Socialist Labour Party (SEKP)'s radical wing, with anti-government groups in the far left, including the infamous Islamic Popular Liberation Front, which took part in the anti-Imperial insurgency in Philistaea during last year's Augousto-Septemvriana. The PLK maintains that these connections were merely back channeling and attempts to find a peaceful way to bring the rebels to the negotiating table so as to peacefully settle their grievances, pointing out that there are reports of the right and centre having similar contacts during the conflict.

This, however, has done little to alleviate the concerns of the Senate, with an increasing numbers of reports coming out of the Common Parliament's upper house stating that the Senate is considering radical measures to prove its supremacy over the National Assembly.

Regardless of who is to come out on top, the people of the Empire are already lamenting the polity's failure to come together to bring an end to the ongoing crisis, with many using the term "Apostasy" to refer to what they see as an abandonment of political duties and responsibility to the Empire's citizens from sides of the political spectrum. SENATE APPOINTS GOVERNMENT UNILATERALLY
PLK and partners reject appointment, vote Article 120 into effect
by Anaxandros Xanthos, Political correspondent

Earlier today, the Senate announced its appointment of a new government, headed by Imperial Party leader and National Assembly member Authente (Lord) Eugenios Chalkondyles, as well as a number of former ministers of the last Krevatas cabinet, including Ikaros Dragases Esq. as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Megas Doux Nikolaos Kallerges as Minister of National Defence. As the Senate acted without consulting the National Assembly, a majority of National Assembly members voted Article 120 of the Imperial Constitution into effect; as per the article, the National Assembly is openly calling on private citizens across the Empire to resist the Senate's actions, which they have deemed "unconstitutional and undemocratic", while ignoring the orders of the new government.

The Senate maintains that the appointment is constitutional, as the constitution's Dedelomene Principle states that the government must have the support of the majority of the legislature's members, without specifying which house, if not both, must provide said support. While it is considered to be a Constitutional Convention that only the National Assembly can grant and withdraw support, the Senate's President, Theodosios Laskarides Esq., has pointed out that as Pelasgia follows Propontine/Tiburan Civil Law and not Common Law, conventions and precedents, unless written down, are not binding. While opposite voices have claimed that breaking such precedent would cause a constitutional or political crisis, the Senate's President further pointed out that the Empire is already in such a crisis, adding that "if breaking a convention is necessary for the crisis to be resolved, let it be so."

As the Senate maintains that it is, by convention and by law, the dominant House of the Common Parliament, the National Assembly be a de jure advisory body to the Senate, most of the civil service has ignored if not outright refused calls to disobey the new government. The Ecumenical Patriarch has already sworn in most cabinet members, with the exception of certain Jewish and Tiburan Catholic cabinet members who were sworn on by His Imperial Majesty and their respective religious leader in the Great Palace of Propontis. In his first statements as Prime Minister, Lord Chalkondyles called for general peace and order, while infrorming the Empire's international partners of a wish to go forward with a state visit to Ayyubistan and joint exercises with Nichtstein , both of which were already examined. A government spokesperson also made reference to a potential normalisation of relations with Serenierre following the deportation of the Pelasgian journalists held by that country.

As news of the new government being sworn in by the Sovereign broke out, the Varangian Guard Regiments of the Great Palace of Propontis, which have just returned from Varinia , had their hands full, being placed on standby around the Imperial residence, though no violence was seen there. Police are so far observing the crowds of protestors both supporting and opposing the Senate's decision, though no major moves have been observed on either side. As Senators were exiting the Senate House in the Forum of Valentian, the President of the Senate, Theodosios Laskarides Esq. was struck by a member of the Progressive People's Party (PLK)'s radical wing and was taken to Saint George's Military Hospital for treatment, though doctors say he was not severely injured and expect a full recovery. Dr. Vartholomaios Lymperopoulos of the PLK has repeatedly called for violence to be avoided, but since the motion to activate Article 201, which was technically vetoed by the Senate, this has seemed increasingly difficult. The Senate has responded by returning to the Senate House for a closed session, the deliberations of which remain unknown, while Imperial Police have arrested the National Assembly member in question. "Though the operetta Golpho he Voskopoula never caught on in the cream of Propontine society, it offered a unique link between traditional music and folklore, particularly that of the Empire's diverse rural areas, and the imported musical styles of Gallo-Germania, allowing the common populace to experience opera for the first time. The common, demotic parlance employed by Elektraios was particularly pivotal in this regard-

We are greatly concerned for the Pelasgian government and its people over the turn of these recent events. I myself am disheartened seeing such a large great power succumb slowly to internal conflict. We pray that the situation stabilizes in the Empire and that more drastic measures will not be necessary or taken.

COUNTRY UNDER MARTIAL LAW AND DIRECT IMPERIAL RULE
Troops stationed across Empire to prevent insurgency - State of Siege for 15 days
by Anaxandros Xanthos, Political correspondent

In the dead of night, tanks and troops rolled through the streets of Propontis, Therme and other major Imperial cities, putting an abrupt and unexpected end to the confrontation between the two factions of the legislative branch of government. The Imperial Radio and Television Foundation (VIRT) interrupted its broadcasting, transmitting two Imperial Decrees which detailed the enforcement of a nation-wide State of Siege for the next fifteen days, as well as a state of Martial Law for the next fourty-eight hours. Among other draconian measures, a mandatory curfew was imposed, hoarding and withdrawals were prohibited, Special Military Tribunals were established and the Common Parliament was dissolved for two days. As Pelasgians awoke from a long night, they found the confrontation which had plagued Pelasgian politics for weeks finally concluded: the PLK's leadership, which had called on them to revolt against the Senate-appointed government, had been detained, the National Assembly had been reduced to an advisory body, and the Senate and the Great Palace of Propontis now controlled the country, the latter having direct rule of the land until the Senate is to reconvene in two days.

From here, the direction the country is going to take remains uncertain; while there have been calls for revolt or resistance, the Areopagus, the third branch of Pelasgia's government, has pointed out that all actions taken by the Senate and the Emperor were constitutional and legal, albeit drastic. More specifically, the Senate was well within its right to appoint and government unilaterally, as the Common Parliament's dominant and upper house, and to then veto a declaration of Article 120 revolt by the National Assembly. Since the National Assembly members and the leadership of the PLK unconstitutionally and illegally continued to rouse the public to an open insurgency, resulting in clashes in which the President of the Senate was severely injured, the Senate and the Government were then perfectly justified in requesting that the Emperor declared a State of Siege. Following the declaration of a State of Siege, the Emperor was then free to use the emergency powers that belong to the Imperial Prerogative to declare a two-day period of Martial Law.

In effect, this period will most probably be used to allow tensions to die out. There are those who still hope to see conflict, at the end of the day, the vast majority of the lower-class Pelasgian public trust the Emperor's guidance of the political system since his pardoning of the Asbestopyrgiot prinery workers, while much of the Empire's urban middle class has historically presented a rather stoic attitude to changes in government. With talk of constitutional reform already in the air and even the Ecumenical Patriarchate throwing its support behind the new government, one would not be all too wrong in assuming that a transition from a de facto Crowned Democracy to a de jure and de facto Constitutional Monarchy is underway. It would seem that the most important chance for the left to govern the Empire in decades has vanished, though it took the right-wing establishment's full force to achieve this end. What the once-more dominant Great Palace will seek to do with its newly restored power remains to be seen. [continued on page 2]

2. (Business) - To alleviate the concerns expressed by much of the Pelasgian and European financial and business world, the new Minister of Economics has promised reduced barriers to trade and business and more ways to facilitate foreign investment following the State of Siege. The Association of Industries and Enterprises has reacted positively to these news, as has the Propontis Stock Exchange, which is showing early signs of stabilisation following a rough morning. In fact, much of the business world seems relieved that PLK rule was averted.

The People's Republic welcomes the overtures of the Pelasgian Imperial Government in normalising the relations with the People's Republic. The Villesen Government is of the view that steps should be taken to re-open diplomatic offices in our countries in the earlier stages of the process to help ensure a smooth normalisation.
