Varinia enters the era of the 3rd Republic
​

In a historic vote, the Varinian people approved the constitution of the United Republic, thus the country enters in the era of the 3rd Republic. The turnout for the referendum exceeded all expectations, around 78% of the people of voting age expressed their democratic right regarding the future of the state. At the question asked, " Do you agree on the adoption of the 3rd Republican Constitution and the transformation of the People's Republic into the United Republic?", 78% voted for and 22% voted against. Constitutionally, if the no camp won, the 2nd Republic would have been legitimated by a peoples vote and Varinia would have remained a people's republic with Marxist-Leninovist Elements.

The yes camp was supported by the Communist Workers' Party, The Prometheist People's Union, The Agrarian Party, the National Party and the Christian Democratic Union, Sabine Schneider presenting herself as the main image and spokesperson of the reform campaign. The no camp was supported by a splinter group from the Communist Workers' Party, who called themselves the Party of the Left, in respects of the name the Communist Party had in exile. They were led by Olaf Kieffer, a staunch supporter of Marxism-Leninovism. President Roman Becker was ambivalent regarding the subject, declaring that he doesn't want to influence the will of the Varinian people, even though he was the one who opened the gates of what was called for a short time "The northern hermit kingdom" to reforms.

The 3rd Republican Constitution transforms Varinia into a directorial republic, with a Saatsrat, a State Council as head of state, made of a representative from each recognized ethnic group in Varinia, Germans, Jews, Kerns and Ivernian Gaels. The devolution represented in the constitution creates four regional legislatives and governments, each for the historical region they represent, with Katte in Arendorf, Dierland in Rotbach, Maetia in Aentieg and Votadinia in Pennsans. Warnen, is represented by the national legislative and government, based in Hartem. Other autonomous regions, like the Arvor Peninsula or the city of Rotbach were integrated in Votadinia and Dierland, respectively. The Constitutional Court will keep track of all amendments and laws given by the regional parliaments to be sure that the fundamental laws of the United Republic are upheld and there will be no abuses. The national parliament, called the United Assembly is a true bicameral parliament, made of the People's Chamber, where MPs are voted directly by the people and the Syndicalist Chamber, where each Trade Union, Syndicate or Cooperative sends a delegation.

Economically, the 3rd Republic promises the return of private enterprise, but with the obligation of respecting the labor laws of the United Republic and the compulsory membership of workers in a trade union. The state relinquishes control over the companies it owned, reorganizing them in shareholding enterprises, with each employee having a share and it's administration being given to the syndicate or trade union from which the employees are a part of. The state also totally liberalized the prices in Warnen, Dierland and Katte, as in Maetia and Votadinia, thanks to the reconstruction process, the planned economy still holds on for 5 more years.

Socially, the 3rd Republic makes education compulsory up to the 12th Grade and gives free University education to all for the first specialization. It supports the creation of a unitary and universal health service where every trade union member has access to it freely. It recognizes the Kerns as a national minority and the Kernish language as Endangered National Heritage. Catholicism loses it's state religion status, Varinia officially becoming a secular nation. It decriminalizes homosexuality, adultery and abortion.

Militarily, the Revolutionary Insurrectionist Army, The Revolutionary Guards and the International Legion are united together into the Warinische Landeswehr, the Varinian Territorial Army. The constitution stipulates that the army cannot be deployed outside the national borders only as a defense measure once the country is attacked. This was a special request of Chancellor Schneider as she said that "we must legally leave behind the days of Varinian imperialism that brought so much suffering in Loago in the colonial years and have radicalized the Gothic Sea so much in the recent years." Article 113 of the new constitution also stipulates that all foreigners who served in the International Legion, now reformed into the International Volunteer Brigades, part of the Landeswehr, are given Varinian citizenship.

"The vote today showed us that the people want a future in which Varinia returns to it's normal self. We want our country to be a vanguard of political, economical and social progress and we will do anything possible to see it happen. I congratulate the people for this great victory and hope that we will leave behind the desperate days of strife and war," stated Chancellor Sabine Schneider after hearing the results of the referendum. Roman Becker also commented and congratulated the Varinian people for this result. As of the new constitution, with the abolition of the office of President, Becker is now just the General Secretary of the Communist Party, though he declared that when the elections come, he intends to candidate for the position of the German member of the Staatsrat.

Independent analysts have declared that the adoption of this new constitution represents a formal declaration of independence of Hartem from Marxism-Leninovism and from Leninovist Kadikistan. As a response to that, Chancellor Schneider declared that Varinia and Kadikistan still have the warmest and friendliest of relations but also declared that the alliance might even evolve more with the New Order in Ivar. Olaf Kieffer and the members of the splinter group Linkspartei, declared that Varinia has abandoned the path to communism, becoming again an agrarian-feudal state. He even declared that he doesn't feel safe in new Varinia and that the headquarters of the Linkspartei will be moved from Hartem to Calidia.

Great War Trial begins in Hartem
​

The Great War trial is set to begin this week in Hartem, bringing in the capital the main leaders of the white movement who rebelled against the legitimate Hartemer government. The main fascist leaders are accused of high treason, plots to destroy the Varinian state and crimes against humanity. The first brought to the hearing, will be the main leader of the Pennsans regime, Tregan mab Treeve, who led the main campaigns against the legitimate army. Together with Tregan mab Treeve, the members of the Pennsans government and more than 900 officers and members of the White Army. The Prosecutors have declared that they also want to accuse Tregan of using child soldiers to try to delay the surrender of Pennsans until a potential Ivernian invasion would take place to help the rebels, this bringing the death of more than two thousand teenagers between 10 and 17 in Pennsans alone. The Prosecution requested a delayed start of the trial until the SVB would provide the reports on the investigations regarding the Arvor Labor Camps and the use of prisoners as slaves to extract nickel and other iron minerals from the Peninsula and smuggle it to Loago to receive hard currency to fuel the war.

Republicans who were first leading the separatist movement and have been toppled by Tregan mab Treeve and the National-Syndicalist movement have reached an accord in the latter part of the war with Roman Becker that brought a their switching of allegiance from the rebels to Hartem. As per the accord, the republican leaders are not to be prosecuted. The members of the white army that joined during the course of the war the Landesheer enjoy the same privileges. Those have been parts of the policies of reunification created by Roman Becker.

"I hope that all war criminals will be dealt upon. I will not accept the modern Varinian state, which has always been a vanguard of human rights to become a stage of destruction and barbarism. I trust in the Hartem Tribunal that it will separate the the culpable from the innocent and will bring a fair trail that will be the basis of a new society and country that leaves behind the barbarism of war," declared Roman Becker.

"There are many heads of indictment, from the typical high treason and defection, which is universal to all those brought before the court to extremely serious ones like war crimes and crimes against humanity. There were two accusations of genocide filled for Neven Hemon and Annaeg Riou, whose militias acted more like death squads who roamed the lands of Maetia and Votadinia purging the territory of German settlers. What are even worse are the accusations regarding the Arvor Labor Camps. Under the leadership of Aela Tanet, four labor camps were constructed were nearly ten thousand people worked as slaves in the nickel mines. We will do anything possible to see such cases resolved and justice to be served," stated Lothar Fersen, one of the prosecutors.

Sabine Schneider calls for the ideological reform of communism

Calling for the first congress of the Varinian Communist Workers' Party, Sabine Schneider declared that communism needs to be ideologically reformed and cannot just copy the recipes it imports from Kadikistan. She called for a more inclusive politics, calling for the reformation and the transformation of the CWP into the Varinian Socialist Party and officially leaving behind Marxism-Leninovism as an ideology and replacing it with multi-tendency democratic socialism. She supported the move by calling for the unity of socialists from all around the world, stressing on the importance of the destination, not of the road taken to arrive to it.

The calls for reform have been received with criticism, even the old mentor of the Chancellor, Roman Becker turning against her and declaring that she should concentrate more on leading the provisional government, not the party. Olaf Kieffer, the head of the Linkspartei, now based in Calidia was even more radical and his statements even made General Abner Speyer, the general director of the SVB to raise the threat of terrorism from "medium" to "high", as the Rakvere based leader declared that: "Varinia has turned from the real path of communism, now going on the path towards bourgeois dictatorship. With this, the Linkspartei and it's military wing, the People's Liberation Army, declares a people's war against revisionism and this government of Varinia, which has betrayed the people."

Sabine Schneider defended her opinions: "I believe that the economical stagnation that the 14 year plan brought as a direct result of the way communism was implemented in Kadikistan. I want to see the Varinian people united and that can't happen when our ideology is so sectarian." When asked what she thinks of the criticism coming towards her, she declared that the congress will sort it all out and history will prove her right.

Six Communist Party activists killed in Maetia

Six members of the Communist Workers' Party have been killed in north-west Maetia. The activists where sent from Hartem to organize the resuming of operations at the Din Rheged Nickel Mine. The mine has ended it's operations when the White Army took control of Din Rheged and was extensively damaged as when the authorities counterattacked, the rebels used it as a bunker. Nickel mining is one of the most important activities in Maetia and Votadinia and the resuming of operations it necessary for the rejuvenation of the war torn land.

The six activists have been attacked and shot in the back of their heads. The Guardians of Peace declared that they came from Hartem by train and wanted to go to see the mine directly, before returning to the town and check in at the Hotel where they reserved accommodations for two months. Concerned that the delegation isn't returning, the Guards came to the mine, only to find the activists lined up and shot in the head. The guards blocked the zone and started an investigation.

Under the protection of anonymity, one Guard talked with reporters from the Nord-Gazette: "We found them lined and shot in the back of the head. Near one of them was a sheet of paper with the letters KKA and underneath it, <<A Kadikistani punishment for Kadikistani Slaves. Beware the wrath of God and Folk>>." The execution by shooting in the back of the head is a well known Kadikistani method, but we don't yet know who are the ones declare that they bring upon the wrath of God.

Crown Council elects new King in Maseru

The Crown Council has completed the summit held secretly in Maseru, has elected the head of the von Osten-Sacken family, as the new king of Varinia. Thus Ricimer von Osten-Sacken was elected and will be crowned as Ricimer III. The Crown Council is made of the members of the Varinian gentry and since the Home Rule treaty with Loago, the tribal chiefs of the Wala and Fante peoples are members of the council. As Varinia is an elective monarchy, the Crown Council comes together every time a king dies and elect a successor, any member of the gentry having a right to nominate himself as a potential king and since the treaty with Loago, even a tribal chief has the right to become a king, though it is highly unlikely.

The Crown Council met in secrecy out of fear of any kind of potential attack either coming from Beckerist supporters in Varinia proper or from followers of Masimba and the League of Communists in Loago. Thus, the whole event was covered in secrecy by the SVB and the results were published only after the members of the council dispersed, as it was a risk too great to have the people know that they are together in a single place.

His Royal and Imperial Majesty, Ricimer III has thus been elected King of Varinia, Emperor of Loago, Mweneluaga (head of the Wala tribes) and Duke of Warnen. He has been the head of the von Osten-Sacken family, which was between the 12th and 18th centuries Grand Dukes of Katte. They lost the Duchy during the conflicts for the federalization of the kingdom and then entered business, using their last cash to buy a ship to transport freight between Hartem and Getijdam in Ulandesa, Keararzhel in Montroulez and Rurikgrad in Kadikistan, building from that a huge commercial empire that is now the biggest privately owned shipping company in Varinia and Loago.

There is still an ambivalence regarding the way the Kingdom will develop from here, as it is the first time a king is elected from a family whose wealth comes from business, not historical properties. But in his youth, Ricimer was attracted by the Knights of the Viridian Cross and was for a few years a member of the Order of Saint Wulfila, the modern form of the old crusader order. So the way the state will take, either traditionalist, either for a more modern business approach, is still unknown.

"It is a great responsibility. I will do my best to keep up with the royal traditions of my ancestors and I will do my best to represent the Varinian and Loagin peoples and to uphold the traditions that are held so high by the people. A new era is coming to Varinia, one of peace in which the spiritual concord has been reestablished and we are from now looking towards a day of tomorrow full of hope," stated him royal and imperial highness at the press conference organized after the summit.

Euric Sigisvult appointed head of the transitional government

His Imperial and Royal Majesty, King Ricimer III has appointed Euric Sigisvult as the head of the transitional government, thus becoming Chancellor of the Kingdom of Varinia, until elections will take place. The appointment of Euric Sigisvult comes after the head of the government in exile, Sebastian Dunst, declared that he wishes to retire from politics, stating that seeing a new king being elected and sitting on the throne of Varinia has been his greatest aspiration since the coup d'etat that brought the republic. Sebastian Dunst will thus return to the position he had before the Emergency, that of the Minister Plenipotentiary and Ambassador to Trier, in the Kingdom of Eiffelland.

Euric Sigisvult was the minister of external affairs of the government in exile and he was the acquisitions of the ships for the Catholic and Royal Navy from the Empire of Pelasgia and the Kingdom of Eiffelland and is also one of the supporters of the Northern Status Quo Treaty and one of the theorists of the Varinian geopolitical strategy, calling for military neutrality, as being so close to either socialist or capitalist powers, a military alliance will make Varinia one of the first battlefields of any potential war between Kadikistan and the Trier Concord.

"I am glad to see that one of the most important politicians of our time, Sebastian Dunst managed to see his and why not, our dream come true and see the disappearance of the abomination that was the Beckerist regime. After three years of ultra-militarized Prometheism and a covert war between Kadikistan and Varinia, an economic crisis which the Prometheists brought upon us by giving more than 40% of the budget to the military, three coup d'etat and a civil war, I can say that in general, the economy is in shambles. But not everything is lost. Even the Kadikistani, in their days of dominating Varinia, understood the necessity of keeping the Warnen, Katte and Dierland regions stable and prosperous by pumping money in the People's Republic, too keep the industrialized south in good state. The war, in the north brought devastation, but it was limited to the Votadinia region, with low intensity fights taking place in Maetia. The poorest region in Varinia has been the most destroyed and we will respect the reconstruction plan and we will see it become even better than it was before. The Bonn and the Shilling are hit by a huge inflation. Economic reform would not be enough. We have a great geopolitical situation now. Being open to both the capitalist and the Kadikistani market brings us huge opportunities. The fact that the Kingdom and the Empire of Loago are constituent nations of the Arctic Crown again, brings a huge boon. We have everything for a recipe of economical success. What we need is not only to reform to foundations, but to demolish and to rebuild the foundations of our economy. That means we need a completely new currency, a fresh start," stated the Honorable Euric Sigisvult, Chancellor of Varinia as he started to describe the 9 points program of his transitional government.

The 9 Points program:
1. Lex Lustratio - The complete de-communization of Varinia and the banning of the people who worked with Roman Becker or were members of the Central Committee of the Communist Worker's Party or Varinia, the Party of the Left of the Popular Front.
2. The Krone - The disbandment of the Bonn and Shilling currencies and their replacement with a common currency, the Krone, which will circulate in Varinia and Logo and will replace the Bonn 10.000:1 and the Shilling 3.000:1.
3. Lex Reversio - The return of nationalized property back to the 1955 owners.
4. Institutional Disbandment - The disbandment of all institutions created by the communist regime and a return to the status quo of 1955.
5. National Stabilization - A return to political and economical stability.
6. Reconstruction - Rebuilding the areas affected by the Emergency.
7. Economic Obligations - The beginnings of the payments to Bourgogne, Eiffelland, Pelasgia and Kadikistan.
8. Elections - The return to the democratic process.
9. Cultural revival - The return of Hartem to the cultural powerhouse it once was.

Chancellor Euric Sigisvult visits Pennsans



His Excellency, Euric Sigisvult, Chancellor of Varinia and thegn of Sudhafen has visited Pennsans today to oversee the reconstruction process of the ancient capital of the north. His Excellency was accompanied by The Reverend Monsignor Visimar Rodolfing, the Grandmaster of the Order of Saint Wulfilas and by her excellency, Brunhilde Athaulfing, the Minister of Development and Reconstruction. They have visited the center of the city, to observe the reconstruction process and then went to Heilaga Hausin, the temporary town built for the refugees that left the capital of Votadinia as the fighting became intense. It should be noted that though the temporary town has no official name, the fact that the people start to refer to it by it's Varinian Germanic name shows that more and more Varinians come to the north to find their luck in the rebuilding.


Out of the three, Visimar Rodolfing was the most popular member of the delegation, as the people flooded to receive his blessing. This has taken by surprise the White Guard, the soldiers not knowing that to expect from the crowd and fearful of a potential Celtic nationalist terrorist. But at the orders of the grand master the soldiers laid down their arms. It was a moment which really showed that the centuries old rift that was started with the Nordic Crusade, has come to an end, especially when the Holy See, through the Order of Saint Wulfilas is the biggest donor of supplies to the war and poverty stricken people of the high north of Varinia.


"The reconstruction process is going smoothly. We will continue the plan of Chancellor Sabine Schneider, as it is imperatively necessary to keep a sense of stability and continuity to reach maximal efficiency. The city of Pennsans has been cleared of rubble and work has started on the process of rebuilding the old town. As for the newer parts of the city, we have decided to scrap the communist plan of building panel blocks, as that would rise the density of the town greatly and in the long run it would bring more problems. We will use Bauhaus architecture and respect the general sizes of the buildings in the old town. This may mean that there will be no building higher than six levels and the surface of the city may rise over what it was before the war, but in the long run it would create a town more airy, which will rise it's comfort levels," declared his excellency, Euric Sigisvult.


The work at the Nickel mines near Rheged, Pennsans and in the southern part of the Arvor peninsula have began production, thanks to the highly increasing number of Germanic colonists arriving in Maetia and Votadinia. ​

Thiudareiks University seeks foreign academic support​

Roderic Welling, the Rector of the Thiudareiks University, the most important institution of higher learning in the Kingdom of Varinia, has stated his plans to create one of the biggest and most important anthologies of history that have ever been written today. He is a known historian that also studied linguistics, specializing in the evolution of Eastern Germanic languages, especially on the Burgundian language. His project is to create a work of history divided in three parts, a history of events, presenting the migration era and showing how Germanic peoples leaving their Urheimat in Northern Germania came to Eiffelland, Andaluz, Engellex, Bourgogne, Gotarike and Gouw Marken, a linguistic history to show how the languages evolved, especially the Western Germanic languages, like Batavican, Markenese, Eiffelland German, Twentish and Engellexic, how the northern Germanic language of Geatish survived and how the Eastern Germanic languages broke off, some becoming Tiburanized, like Burgundian and Andal, while Varinian remained German. A smaller chapter is also dedicated to Germanized peoples, especially the mixing of Celtic and Germanic cultures, concentrating on the Kerns in Varinia and on Capitollium. The last part of the anthology is about the evolution of the culture of the Germanic states, going from the middle ages, when the said cultures were starting to show individual characteristics up to present day.


For this great work, Roderic Welling has called in the support of the Royal Academy of Varinia from which more than 25 historians, 20 linguists and 10 ethnologists volunteered to work on the anthology, but now is also seeking the support of foreign academies and universities, especially from [MENTION=18]Eiffelland[/MENTION], [MENTION=16]Engellex[/MENTION], [MENTION=26]Bourgogne[/MENTION], Ulandesa (@Winfrew), [MENTION=72]Capitollium[/MENTION] and [MENTION=665]Gouw Marken[/MENTION].


"What we want to do here is to map the way the Germanic peoples have evolved. Considering their diversity and huge numbers, it is a work that we will finish in three lives at least, but when it will be finished, it will be one of the greatest academic resources for historians, linguists and folklorists alike. But we cannot do this by ourselves and considering that this is something that the whole world can use, we will call volunteer researchers from all over the world to help us. It will be a reference work for generations to come," stated Roderic Welling.

Justice:: Sabine Schneider has been acquitted by the Tribunal of Hartem for her collaboration with Roman Becker, based on her attempts to reform the communist regime and to bring back democracy.
Social:: A huge downturn of the Prometheist Pillar is shown in the recent weeks, as nearly 25% of the people affiliated to it chose to switch to the Catholic Pillar. This may be a problem as the institutions of the Catholic Pillar aren't adapted for such a huge number of people switching over and it will need time to be ready to receive them all.​

Chancellor Euric Sigisvult has signed an accord today with his Pelasgian counterpart, Deputy Prime Minister Ikaros Dragases to recreate the world famous Varangian Guard. Aishafen has been declared the first completely rebuilt settlement in the north. We move now from the studio to our correspondent at the Hunimund Palace, Arius Aoricing.

Arius Aoricing: After a meeting today with the Pelasgian ambassador, Chancellor Euric Sigisvult declared an accord has been signed between Hartem and Propontis to continue the existence of the famous Pelasgian royal guard, the Varangian Guards, in it's traditional form, with Germanic volunteers. Created at the beginning of the 10th century, the first Christianized Varinians have been employed by the Southern Tiburan Emperors as members of an elite military units, which will serve the emperor as it's personal lifeguards. While small until the complete Christianization of the Varinians, the Nordic Crusade has create a huge Varinian diaspora much of it finding employment in north Himyar, especially in Propontis. The tradition of serving in the Varangian Guard became similar to a rite of passage for many young Varinians who chose to do their military service in the Pelasgian Empire. This tradition was stopped by Roman Becker, who brought Varinia in the camp of socialist states and thus made it hostile to Propontis. Through the accord now signed by Euric Sigisvult, Varinia is allowing again young men to go to Propontis to serve as part of the Guard. The Volunteers must be unmarried Varinian catholic, between 19 and 30 who first must have completed their basic training in the Varinian Catholic and Royal Army. This is Arius Aoricing, Boreal News.

Kaethe Hunulfing: Thank you Arius, we now go north, to the Arvor peninsula to visit the village of Aishafen and our correspondent there, Valamir Edicing.

Valamir Edicing: Aishafen, of as it was formerly known in the last century in Gaelic, Oighear Cuain, meaning Ice Harbor is a small village west of the biggest town in the Arvor Peninsula, Roz an Arvor. It was destroyed in the fighting between the Red Army and the Kern militias, when the town of Roz was retaken for the last time by the communists and the Kerns tried to conterattack, but they were pushed back and retreated to the fishers' village of Aishafen, before the Kadikistani Northern Fleet bombed the village, destroying it. The Friends of the North Association worked on rebuilding the houses and the docks of the village. Eiffellander, Pelasgian, Ivernian and Varinian volunteers worked together to reconstruct twenty five traditional wooden houses and donated to the villagers who returned, three fishing boats. Out of the twenty five families that lived in Aishafen, only twenty returned, as three were completely wiped out by communist forces, a mass grave being found two kilometers south of the village. The villagers described the assassinations as being the work of the Kadikistani general Sergei Moravscik, who was suppressing the activities of the Kern partisans, especially of the Camulus group. Aishafen is the first settlement in the north to be declared as completely reconstructed to it's pre-war levels. The Committee for Reconstruction declared that if international support and donations would continue at this level, the rebuilding will be easier and shorter than it was ever anticipated. Kaethe Hunulfing: Thank you Valamir, we now return to our studio in Hartem. I am here with an amazing woman who has transformed Varinia into her homeland is is actively working to change the world for the better. Frau Freudenberger, can you tell us, why Varinia?

Ulrike Freudenberger: Good Evening, Frau Hunulfing, I am very happy to be here. Why Varinia, you say... Well... As you know, I was born in Eiffelland, in Bad Hersfeld. I can say that I lived a stereotypical life on the coast along the Long Sea, what many Varinian teens are dreaming to see, warm summers, the sea, golden sands... But I wasn't every attracted of it all. In those days, in the 1910s and 1920s, Eiffelland and Varinia were enjoying good relations, which I think they enjoy today too, with the small exception of the Becker regime. My father died of a severe flu when I was small and my mother had to go to Hartem to work on a common project between Eiffelland and Varinia. Even today I didn't understood exactly what she was doing in Hartem in those days, but I remember that she left me with my aunt, who had no children and no husband and I grew more with her. I was still very attached to my mother. She was away for around 5 years, from when I was 12 to when I was 17 and she was always sending postcards from Varinia, as she was visiting the country and I was fascinated by them. I mean, when it was late May and Bad Hersfeld was already filling with people coming to spa and it was already extremely hot, my mother was sending postcards with snow from Votadinia and Maetia. One Christmas, she sent me a letter along with some photographies from Hartem. It was when I was 14, I believe, so I think it was 1926. In that year, Hartem was hit by a huge blizzard. I was looking at the images showing the city flooded with snow and how even if in an atmosphere so strange and exotic for an Eiffellandia, I was looking at the Varinians in the images and how their lives continued unaffected by the blizzard. From then I started to love snow and winter and cold weather, but for misfortune of a strange teenager, December in coastal Eiffelland is closer to what a Varinian would call dog-days, than a real winter. After my mother returned she told me her stories and my fascination grew even more and one day I bought a Eiffellander-Varinian dictionary and I can say that was the moment I was hooked by Varinia and I went to university at the Faculty of Foreign Languages, specializing on Varinian German.

K.H: You also worked as an ethnologist here and even published some books about the Varinian Folklore.

U.F.: Yes, teachers at the University observed my interest in Varinia and helped me write my degree thesis about the evolution of winter traditions in the Oriental Germanic peoples. It was more of a work of history and ethnology than linguistics, but I managed to go through it as I also analyzed how the etymology of those traditions evolved, especially in the Tiburanized Germanic peoples like the Burgundians and Andals. Then, I heard of a grant offered by the Varinian ministry of Culture, given in collaboration with the Varinian and Eiffellandian ministries of Education. I applied for it and I was selected. I managed to accomplish my dream of coming to Varinia. I was 23, it was 1935. The ministry wanted to present the Varinian culture to the whole world but through a series of books easy to read, not necessarily with an academic rhetoric. That is how I published my series on Varinian folklore, The Man and the Moose (1937), The Image of Winter (1940) and From Dogs to Dragons, an evolution of the Varinian epic poem (1942). During this time I decided to apply for a Varinian citizenship and with it I renounced my Eiffellandian one, as in those days, neither country accepted dual citizenship. I managed to get a job at the Ministry of Culture and I am now teaching Anthropology at the Faculty of History from the Thiudareiks University.

K.H.: So you became a real daughter of the North.

U.F.: Yeah, you can say that. In my life I was fascinated by Germanic culture, not really that much of Engellexian or Eiffellander, as I always was attracted by the niches, so it was either this or Gotarike, but I must say that the merit for all this was of the Ministry of Tourism of Varinia and the postcards they made during the years of my childhood and teenage years. I was and still am fascinated by the north and by the traditional societies, not so much of the globalization, as I see that as a way to create an uniform society from which diversity disappears. I am now doing my best to find as much as possible information about the Kingdom of Gunnland and it's people. I have made some friends from inside it and they send me letters in which they describe it's society and people, but compared to Varinia and the fascination I had for it in the teenage years, which was an open society, Gunnland is a closed one, like a hermit kingdom. This is what probably keeps it's tradition as original and free of foreign influences as possible. That is what I want to do now. I want to concentrate on Gunnland and write about it's culture and folklore.

K.H.: From what I heard, Roderic Welling also called you to help for the creation of the Anthology of the Germanic Peoples.

U.F.: Yes, he did and I will work on the chapters regarding the traditions of the Gunnish and Varinian people.

Hermeneric Ulfing sworn in office

After winning enough votes to dominate the elections but not enough to win a safe majority in the Royal Assembly, the National Syndicalist Union passed unscathed through what might be a normal process in many other democratic nations, but in Varinia it was a real political crisis. Even if the Catholic Party has been seen as the main contender and opponent of the National Syndicalists, the appearance of the Socialist Party under the leadership of the charismatic Sabine Schneider as a serious contestant for the seats in the Assembly has dissipated the tradition-progress antithesis between the National Syndicalists and the Catholic Party and made them unite under their common denominator, anti-communism. Thus, Euric Sigisvult of the Catholic Party has come to terms with Hermeneric Ulfing of the National Syndicalist Union, with Alaric Iceling of the Christian Democratic Party and Ulfilas Alicing of the Liberal Party, thus forming what Hermeneric Ulfing called a Grand Coalition of the Right, with 59% support from the Assembly. The opposition will be represented by the Socialist Party and the Prometheist People's Union and the crossbenchers will be represented by the Yiddish National Party and the Celtic Union.

The new government was sworn in office in a ceremony at the Waiss Haus, the Chancellery of the Kingdom, in Heldenplatz, in the center of Hartem. Hermeneric Ulfing was the first to swear allegiance to the king as his faithful chancellor and to swear to the Varinian folk that he will work tirelessly for their betterment and to defend their interests. He was followed by the other ministers of the cabinet. While the sharing of the ministries was clear since the agreement for the Grand Coalition was signed, but a surprising move still took place, as Sigeric Athaulfing, the minister of foreign affairs in the transitional cabinet was appointed to head the same ministry by Hermeneric Ulfing, from the Catholic Party, immediately as he was sworn in, he declared his resignation from the party and declared that he will join the National Syndicalist Union. Asked for comments, neither Euric Sigisvult, Hermeneric Ulfing or Sigeric Athaulfing gave more details.

In the press conference that followed, Hermeneric Ulfing thanked Euric Sigisvult and Sabine Schneider for their efforts to end the anarchy instituted by Roman Becker and promised a complete return of the rule of law.

"We cannot continue like this. The war in the north has been a grave problem and the reconstruction, while going well, is sadly not going as well as I would like to. We must make Varinia great again. Our GDP per capita has been reduced by nearly a quarter because of the whole fiasco that was the Becker Regime. We must make sure that the memories of all this crises are kept only so that the future generations can learn to avoid communism and to destroy this hydra once and for all. The first mission of the government will be to change the currency, as the Bonn has been reduced to nothing more than wasted paper. We will bring the Krone as fast as possible at a rate of 100000 Bonns to 1 Krone and will create a common currency with Loago, as Reese Bivin's Cabinet will also work to replace the Shilling with it. Varinia must return to what it was before. It is in it's destiny to be a queen of the extreme north and the place where people from all over the world look up to. The days in which foreigners will flock to the Kastanien Allee by the thousands to get a glimpse of both the high and low culture of Varinia will be back. We were a powerhouse during the days of Lena Rees and we will become one again. We are not a people of slaves and we will never accept servitude," declared Hermeneric Ulfing.

Justice: The Hartem Tribunal decided to make the song "Moorsoldaten" legal again after Sabine Schneider won the trial again the state. Schneider sued the state after the Sigisvult cabinet banned the song calling it a communist anthem, but she reasoned in court that the song is about the struggles of the forced labor prisoners and that it should also represent the liberation from the Becker Regime.
Hartem: The biggest land return through Sigisvult's Lex Reversio was decided by the Local Council and the Commerce Room of Varinia and involved the return of 15 houses and apartments and 10 companies to their rightful owners after the state illegally seized them in the communist nationalization.
Foreign Affairs: Chancellor Hermeneric Ulfing declared that the Kingdom of Varinia is disappointed by the way Borovanger is being transformed into a battleground to test new weapons and strategies by the grand powers and that the Prometheist Government of [MENTION=2082]Borovanger[/MENTION] will always have a safe place in Hartem.
Loago: Six members of the Public Force have been killed in a shootout with the rebels from the League of Communists. The Public Force has set up checkpoints in northern Loago, while in the south the Fante are clearing the land of any supporters of Masimba.
Pennsans: More and more workers are arriving from the south to join the reconstruction of the capital of the northern regions. The Catholic and Royal Army as also been mobilized in Maetia and Votadinia to help the workers.
Gunnland: Ulrike Freudenberger goes to Gunnland to work on her new historical and ethnographical articles for the Anthology of Germanic History prepared at the Thiudareiks University. She hopes to finally shed a light on the fascinating kingdom whose intricate power and clan relations still keep many away from the effort of trying to understand it.

Royal Family visit to Eiffelland

The spokesperson of the royal family declared in a press conference two days ago that His Royal and Imperial Highness, Ricimer III and the royal family will begin their international tour. It has been a tradition of the Varinian kings to begin an international tour after coronation to generally present the foreign policy and visit the countries that have good relations with the kingdom, but as the days of absolutism ended and the parliament led the executive, the tour lost in importance, but it still remained an important event, presented sometimes presented as a rite of passage of the newly crowned kings. Even so, as the relationship between the Kingdom of Varinia and the Kingdom of Eiffelland became better and better since the beginning of the 19th century, Eiffelland has been the first country to visit and the tradition will continue this year.

His Royal and Imperial Highness has a special relation with Eiffelland, as the father of King Ricimer, Andreas von Osten-Sacken was the ambassador of Varinia in Eiffelland in the first half of the century and King Ricimer studied at the Konigliche Gymnasium. The King of Eiffelland have always been described by King Ricimer as a childhood friend. When asked about this, The Right Honorable Hermeneric Ulfing, Chancellor of Varinia, declared that the relationship between Varinia and Eiffelland is warming since the anti-communist revolution, as Nord Airlines have now placed an order for some short range airliners, but the relationship is more political and social than military, as Varinia is bound by the Northern Status Quo Treaty not to enter any kind of military alliance. As for more economical cooperation, Chancellor Ulfing declared that the Varinian economy is not yet ready for a free trade agreement with Eiffelland.

Royal Bank presents the Krone

In a press conference held at the Kriemhildehof Palace, the headquarters of the Varinian Royal Bank, the Honorable Amelie Ariaric, the Governess of the Royal Bank and The Right Honorable Hermeneric Ulfing, the Chancellor, have presented the new currency. The new Krone is part of the government's plan to make the inflation ridden currencies of Varinia and Loago obsolete and to replace them, and with this, create a common currency between the Kingdom and the Empire. The Krone is to replace the Varinian Bonn at a rate of 100,000 Bonn to 1 Krone and the Loagin Shilling at a rate of 30,000 Shilling to 1 Krone.

The new currency will see the reappearance of subunits, which have fell in disuse when inflation went over 100%, but the apogee was 1136%, which was reached towards the end of the last year. The new subunits, called Or, will be represented by brass coins representing 1, 5, 10 and 50 Or. The Krone itself will be represented by banknotes with values of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 200 and 500 Krone. On the obverse, all banknotes will have the Ice Crown, representing the Monarchy with Varinian and Loagin decorative motives, while on the reverse, the banknotes will have portraits of either Varinian or Loagin personalities. The 1 Krone will have Duda Uniling, a Varinian impressionist painter, the 5 Krone will have Anesu Vera, the first Loagin member of the Royal Academy, the 10 Krone will represent King Arthyen I, the mab Griffyn king who created the first Parliament, the 50 Krone will have Empress Nakay of Loago, which created the Seashell Road of commerce to Pelasgia, the 100 Krone will have Reccared Feving, the political philosopher whose works stand behind Prometheism, the 200 Krone will have Mweneluaga, the legendary first emperor of Loago and the 500 Krone will have Gelimer, the first Varinian Grandmaster of the Order of the Knights of the Viridian Cross. The coins will show on obverse the value of the coin while on the reverse, those minted in Varinia will have the Royal Coat of Arms, while those minted in Loago will have the Imperial Coat of Arms. Both coins will be available for use in both countries.

The new currency will begin circulating from the 15th of August and the old ones will still circulate in parallel with it until the 1st of January 1958. The government will put pressure on all commercial agents to show both prices until the 1st of January.
