Giovanni Lucciano stuns all to become first Retalian champion of Hoselupf. The 25 year old originally from Cappiazo (Kapets) on Engelinsel surprised everybody by beating the standing champion Willy Flach during the final round of the Hoselupf Tournament in Gadmen. Giovanni becomes the first Retalian to claim the title in Nichtsteiner wrestling, traditionally associated more with the Bourbinian part of the country.

Police in Losena detain two over church vandalism. Police in the city of Losena have detained red handed two teenagers who were attempting to write graffiti on the walls of the medieval Santi Apostoli church in the south-east of the city. The two are reported to belong to the local Zwinglian Bourbinian community and might be prospective members of the "Zwingli's Pals" youth gang, who have self-proclaimed themselves the "Defenders of the Reformed faith" in Losena.

Yearly "Il Pesto" exercises to take place on Budelli island. The Ministry of Defence has announced plans to hold the yearly "Il Pesto" exercise on Budelli island (Budelinsel). "El Pesto" is a major annual exercise of the Nichtsteiner Grand Ducal Armed Forces aimed at consolidating and maintaining the inter-arms operations between the Nichtsteiner Grand Ducal Army, the Nichtsteiner Grand Ducal Navy and the Nichtsteiner Grand Ducal Air Force in repelling a sea-bourne assault against one of Nichtstein's islands, with the locations chosen alternating every year.

Military presence increased in the North. Landwehr and Landsturm reservists of the Nichtsteiner Army in the northern areas have been ordered into "deployment readiness" as the regular army is also repositioning additional units to the northern areas in the country. This mirrors an increase in National Police numbers in the villages and towns bordering on the Kingdom of Danmark. The Nichtsteiner Army has refused to issue any comment at all. Brigadier Urs Zigli, heading the National Police in the town of Adelboden and himself a Landsturm reservist who changed his police uniform to the TAZ51 camouflaged outfit, his army issued rifle in a corner of his office, had this to say to nNn: "We'll build a wall all along the border with barbed wire, moats and fire breathing dragons. Now get the heck out of my office and let me get back to my job."

Surprise Military Readiness Exercises in the South. The Grand Ducal Navy has launched a surprise readiness exercise throughout the Retalian Isles. Some elements of the Grand Ducal Army and the Grand Ducal Air Force will also take part in the exercises. Such readiness exercises are not uncommon and are usually scheduled under the "Il Pesto" program every year. This time, however, the exercise will involve less of a "repel enemy invasion of the islands" scenario and more of a "naval warfare" scenario. "Well, we initially, to be honest, planned to have massive exercises in the north," a Ministry of Defence spokesman stated. "But given the situation in Danmark the Government decided that it would be sort of a not very good idea, given the context."

INTERNATIONAL HEADLINES

Parliament Passes Motion Supporting Eiffelland. The Grand Ducal Parliament has passed a motion in support of the Kingdom of Eiffelland over the crisis in neighbouring Danmark, instructing the Government to assist and aid the Eiffellander allies as and how the circumstances and the needs dictate. In a separate motion, the Parliament has instructed the Grand Ducal Armed Forces to ensure and enforce the territorial integrity and safety of the Grand Duchy of Nichtstein. However, the lawmakers stopped short of authorising use of force within Danmark at this stage, pending consultations with the Kingdom of Eiffelland on further actions. The Prime Minister has already departed for Trier for urgent consultations with his Eiffellander counterpart on matters concerning Danmark.

It is of utmost importance that we cooperate to create a stable Commonwealth as the successor state to Danmark. Nichtstein to follow Eiffelland into Triet Concord. The Grand Duchy of Nichtstein has begun negotiations to accede to the Trier Concord concluded by Eiffeland with Tiburtina and Belmont, following assurances that the Concord does not entail adopting the International Law of the Seas, a position Nichtstein is consistently adamant about on the world stage. Due to the integration of the Nichtsteiner and Eiffellander economic, social and political systems, it is expected that the eventual accession would not be far away.

Nichtstein joins the Trier Concord. Despite the mounting controversy over whether Nichtstein should join the Trier Concord or not, the Parliament has voted in favour of the move by a large majority, leaving the opposition disgruntled with the move. There are voices of concern that Nichtstein is moving closer to becoming a mere province of Eiffelland, something rejected by the defenders of the Trier Concord as "pure rubbish", with Nichtstein choosing her own way on the international arena, even if in most areas aligned with Eiffelland due to the democratic, state of law and liberal nature of both countries.

We welcome Nichtstein as the fourth member of the Trier Concord. Nichtstein can look forward to an age of prosperity. The nature of a treaty like the Trier Concord implies that certain decisions are taken after consultation of the other members. However, it should also be noted that treaty organisations like the Trier Concord have many economic advantages.

Eiffelland and Serenierre militarise. Nichtstein to follow to "not set a bad example". The Grand Duchy of Nichtstein will increase its military expenditure to keep up with the frantic pacing of its senior partner and ally Eiffelland and its communist oversea neighbours in Serenierre. "Well, money could be spent elsewhere, like on that bloody expensive autobahn project to connect all the Retalian islands," the Chancellor Gerald von Rivien stated during a press conference. "We certainly do not wish to set a bad example for the other countries in the world by not arming ourselves to the teeth. And I guess building expensive autobahn bridges and tunnels in a situation when people can come blow them up is not really that good an idea..."

The fact that we have announced that we shall be increasing our military expenditures for defensive purposes is being manipulated by the press agencies of all our neighbours to suit the aggressive and jingoistic agendas of their national governments. The People's Republic is not arming itself "to the teeth" nor does it have any hostile intentions with regards to its neighbours. However, we remain concerned by the actions of the Grand Duchies of Bourgogne & Nichtstein and the Kingdom of Eiffelland. Their involvement in the Ivernish Civil War has resulted in countless incursions into neutral territory and we remain convinced that the People's Republic is also threatened by such incursions. Mme. Marie-Claudette Lausanne seems to believe that Bourgogne has violated neutral territory which is a serious accusation. We ask for specific examples. Since the beginning of hostilities, Burgundian air forces have operated within a very strict corridor of operations. On this chart, one can clearly see the wide berth being given to the border.

Decembre. 1955 The People's Republic urges the Grand Ducal Government to refrain from deviating from well-established principles of diplomatic conduct in communiques. While disagreement is commonplace in the world of diplomacy, we must not resort to making less than polite remarks about fellow diplomats and representatives of sovereign nation-states. We would like to remind the Grand Ducal Government that providing maps, in the manner that they have, is meaningless for they can be doctored and wholly unreflective of the realities of decisions made in the heat of battle. The only appropriate evidence is, in our opinion, from radar scans and other such technical reports from the particular area in question. The Government of Saaremaa has provided our Ambassador with enough such convincing evidence for us to believe that the statements from them have some truth to them. I would like to remind my counterpart in Chagny that Villesen has made no accusation against Bourgogne. That was done by the Government of Saaremaa. They have convinced us with their evidence. Whereas, [MENTION=26]Bourgogne[/MENTION] hesitates to do the same. It is, thus, quite reasonable for us to conclude that one narrative has more weight than the other. It would seem to us that an accusation has been made. Based off of the geographical stationing of Burgundian aircraft and the area of operations, it is totally nonsensical for our aircraft to violate the airspace of Saaremaa. Why would our aircraft veer so far from their air fields or targets. Surely your intelligence services are aware that Burgundian operations are focused in a very narrow theater. Our aircraft entering neutral airspace is not only nonsensical but is, frankly, impossible. Radar scans can only show aircraft, not origin or identity. While we cannot account for aircraft of other nations involved, Bourgogne reiterates that Burgundian aircraft have never violated Saaremaa's airspace nor have even come close. The the realities of decisions made in the heat of battle by Burgundian forces are nowhere near any border.

Grand Duchy of Nichtstein denies participation in the Ivernish Civil War. The Ministry of Defence of the Grand Duchy of Nichtstein has denied the claims by the People's Republic of Serenierre that Nichtsteiner forces are involved in the Ivernish Civil War. "There is no policy at this moment to get involved militarily in the Ivernish matter," a press release form the Ministry of Defence read. "The Grand Duchy also denies the involvement of any Nichtsteiner Forces in the Ivernish Civil War. We've double checked before typing this press release, so we're pretty sure about this."

Nichtstein will observe Eiffellander naval war games. The Nichtsteiner Grand Ducal Navy will observe Eiffellander exercises in the Long and Kalahari Seas, but the issue of direct Nichtsteiner participation has not been commented on. The Navy is currently on alert in the Retalian and Long Seas due to increased activity of the People's Republic of Serenierre.
