Burgundian agents arrested in Northern Serenierre

Officials from the People's Security Tribunal have announced that three foreign agents have been arrested from the northern province of Laucenaux. The foreign agents were arrested during a routine raid of known subversive strongholds. The agents were captured as they were attempting to flee from the personnel of security agencies. Upon capture, it was revealed that the individuals were Burgundian agents working in tandem with local Royalist agents to destabilize the Revolution. Madame Lausanne - the Commissar for External Relations - has said, "If proven, the actions of the Burgundian state are criminal in the eyes of international law."

Burgundian press has, in recent weeks, been full of Royalist rhetoric, with one report quoting the current pretender to the extinct throne of Serenierre as stating that he would not relinquish the claim. The arrogance of the Royalists is laid bare here. The mandate of the people lies with the Revolutionary struggle. Even where the people have rejected the Royalists twice, they refuse to lay down their claims to the land.

The Government has summoned the Burgundian Ambassador to explain the stance of his government. Border security across the northern frontier has been tightened to prevent further incursions into the country by Burgundian spies. The Ambassador of Serenierre in Chagny has been provided with a substantial dossier containing the damning evidence. When questioned whether there was any likelihood of a break in diplomatic ties with Bourgogne over the matter, Madame Lausanne responded: "Such an action by either side would be crude and cause more tension. At such points in time, the utility of having diplomatic offices is laid bare. Our diplomatic ties will remain unaffected with @ ."

Grand Duchy of Bourgogne

The Grand Duchy publicly denies any existence of Burgundian spies operating to sow royalist discontent in Serenierre. The Burgundian citizens arrested are either temporary residents of Serenierre or are visiting families and have no connection to espionage. We further protest the arrest of a Priest of the Church of Twente who is a Burgundian citizen. We hereby request access to this evidence that supposedly implicates Bourgogne in some manner of conspiracy. The Government of the Grand Duchy of Bourgogne has no interest in causing any manner of change of government for Serenierre. Bourgogne is committed to the self-determination of the People of Serenierre. The Grand Duke has not made any attempt to take the throne of Serenierre nor has he used any titles in conjunction with the issue. We refer the Government of Serenierre to the comments made by the Grand Duke on December 12th in which he publicly stated he would not pursue it unless the majority of the people of Serenierre asked him to do so, which he recognizes as not happening. Bourgogne again has no wish to change the government in Villesen. What royalists might exist are clearly in the minority and the Government of Bourgogne cannot control the political aspirations of individuals who reside in another country.

COMMISSARIAT OF PEOPLE'S DEPUTIES
DIRECTORATE FOR EXTERNAL RELATIONS

30. Decembre. 1955

The People's Republic has collected a detailed dossier over the past few months of concerted efforts by the Burgundian intelligence agencies and others in the Burgundian aristocracy to support rogue elements in our country ascribing to the Royalisme ideology. The Ambassador to Chagny has been instructed to relay the relevant files to the Grand Ducal Government.

The three individuals in detention have stated that they are Burgundian nationals. At this point, it is hard to refute the evidence that has been collected to ascertain their identities. If the Government of Bourgogne has chosen to publicly deny the fact that these individuals are their citizens then they shall be tried for espionage in the courts of our country - a finding of guilt will lead to execution. If however, they are Burgundian, we are willing to immediately deport them.

Further, the matter with regards to the Twentish Catholic priest who was also arrested from that particular raid will be handled by the appropriate authority. His Imminence the Twentish Bishop of Monseran has been informed and shall adjudicate on the matter of the priest who was clearly not supposed to be engaged in the activities that he was.

Sincerely,
Mme. Marie-Claudette Lausanne

We do not deny the existence of our citizens, only that these people are spies. The Twentish Priest in question is a Burgundian citizen and therefore we have vested interest. These citizens are guilty of no more than being in Serenierre. We request they immediately be remanded to Burgundian custody either at our Embassy or at a suitable border crossing.

Grand Duchy of Nichtstein

The Grand Duchy of Nichtstein is not aware of any particular conflict events in the Nichtsteiner internal waters of the Retalian Sea. Fishing vessels flagged in the People's Republic operate in accordance with licenses issued by the Grand Ducal Ministry for Agriculture and Fisheries. Should the People's Republic have any different information, thr Grand Duchy would appreciate feedback on that.

As far as the military presence of the People's Republic is concerned, the Grand Duchy maintains all the rights and duties in protecting its sovereign territory, be it land, sea or air.

The actions being taken against innocent people by the government of Serenierre is appalling. Their lives are being used as propaganda. The Government of Bourgogne warns Serenierre that the actions being taken, without cause, are dangerously close permanently damaging diplomatic relations between our two countries. We now demand the release of these citizens and a formal apology be issued.

The Grand Duchy of Bourgogne wishes to reiterate its stance that nations maintain a right to self determination and we have no interest in causing any manner of governmental change. The accusation that we are actively, or otherwise, attempting to undermine your manner of government is simply a false one.

There was a Communist leader who said that 1956 started the same way as 1955: Close to war. While observing several events involving Serenièrre, we cannot conclude anything else than that it is Serenièrre itself that is currently heating up the situation, first by arresting two Burgundian citizens based on at least doubtful accusations of espionage, and then by accusing the Nichtsteiner Coast Guard of intimidating fisher vessels from Serenièrre, while those intimidations actually never took place.
Let it be known that we stand behind our allies in Bourgogne and Nichtstein, and that we will support them when needed.
