"In hairs and eyes of colors you do not yet know they will come, then they will come again, and again, until the differences are familiar with or in your children." - Unknown Oesgálian writer.

A Morning in August

Traveling to Pordosol in Oesgália could best be described as indirect. Indeed, arriving by ship is the most direct route - but a Pelasgian delegation would not be expected to sail from port to port in such a way, though this connection between the two distant nations that had been established was what inspired the conference of today. Pordosol lacked a major international airport, and required a bus, taxi, or as would be offered to the Pelasgian families: a series of luxury vehicles imported from Eiffelland to carry them from Valhos International Airport to Pordosol.

Domestic security was beside and available to the visitors, though they did not often approach or interrupt the foreigners as they proceeded through this simple experience. Members of the foreign office did, as should be expected, invite themselves into the experience of the Pelasgians merely to guide them through shortcuts and experiences that they might reach if they return again. The wiser among them, the Oesgáls, only played this game to the children - after all the Pelagians had enough legends and histories to themselves that made Oesgálian existence seem like a calf's burp.

"At least two millennia, so much older than you or I, was the first time your great-great greatest grandparents touched our shores" a greeter explained to a Pelagian child who he expected was ready for the magnitude, "and you return again as mighty as your forefathers - welcome to the Sunset Islands!"

An hour along a coast filled with blue surfs breaking into white mists separated those Pelasgians from their audience with the Oesgálian State. The Arms of Alma do Este perched atop a minor mountain beside the coast and commanded beach property available to the incoming guests. The Oesgáls had invited and expected their guests to rest and holiday beside them, and should their Pelagian counterparts speak business immediately or after a day's time was their prerogative.

Prime Minister Augusto Braga made himself available in the restaurant and conference area of the hotel, Alma do Este, while his teen son and daughter brought an excess of noise and activity to the beachfront every night. The son of the Strategos of Oesgália plucked from these domestic nights yet appeared beside his father in full and undeserved regalia as soon as the Pelasgians appeared.

"We afford these travelers and guests the fish, salt, and wine we possess" the Prime Minister recited from tradition, "though I think these refined pallets, as I see them now, require the mastery of Oesgál's greatest chef!"

Josefina Mata, the chef of this occasion, walked out and bowed to her guests. "The familiar is optional to you" the chef offered as a translator relayed, "the cheese, yogurt, and bread of Pelasgians are eternal - we cannot argue, we can only re-produce!"

Finding some confidence in her and her forebears own methods Chef Mata offered the following: "for brunch I offer the roast of beef which has only chewed at Oesgálian grass smothered by butter of the same. If you care to remain for dinner I can promise you a buffet of what the sea offers us today - a fresh offering of this side of the sea."

The guests would listen to this pitch on an open-air platform many meters above the primary hotel cafeteria. Common tourists and Oesgál's mingled below unaware in bathing suits in a queue for breakfast basics of eggs and small fish. The noise of the lesser people was unavoidable, and indeed the bleach of the efforts below carried up to where the meeting would take place. Still, the Oesgál's bowed and ensured that the salt, wine, and bread promised were placed before the smaller plates and saucers of yogurts and baked sweets were served to the foreign chldren.

The Pelasgians did not come. The food would be pushed out to Gallians resting on the islands, and the rooms offered as complimentary to the tourists who ventured out in these troubled times.
