Pelasgia granted independence from Caria
Propontis, 6 May 2022 | The Editorial Board

The internal courtyard of the former Governor General's Palace in Propontis

Following a tight vote in the Parliament of Caria, the federal government of the Kingdom has voted to grant independence to the Governorate General of Pelasgia. The move came after months of political back and forth regarding the politically delicate issue of same-sex marriage, where, in spite of the Carian majority's wish to legialise the practice, the strong opposition of most Pelasgians (including full Carian citizens in Pelasgia) made the move politically untenable. This deadlock, which threatened the unity of the governing Constitutional Democratic Party of Caria, came on top of a decades-long home rule movement, which included a low-level insurgency and broad strike and civil disobedience movements in Caria's largest de facto colony. In the wake of a consultative referendum, in which 74% of Pelasgians voted for independence, the liberal faction of the Constitutional Democrats and various opposition forces allied themselves to outmaneuver Carian Prime Minister Anastasios Kalamaras and present him with a simple choice: a vote of no confidence, or independence for Pelasgia. By the end of last week, the corresponding bill had been approved by the Carian federal legislature and signed into law by the Carian Monarch, King Ioannes III Notaras.

The statute, entitled the "Law respecting the Independence of Pelasgia" or Federal Act № 180/2022, made only minimal changes to Pelasgia's current political system, for the sake of avoiding delays or needless debates in the transition of power in Propontis. As such, the colonial institutions have largely been preserved, with the Carian King's second son, Prince Andronikos Notaras, being declared Basileus of Pelasgia on condition of accepting Pelasgian Orthodox Christianity (which has been recognised as the country's official religion, instead of Carian Propontine Catholicism). This move, which is meant to officialise self-rule by the Orthodox majority, who were previously dominated by a Catholic Carian colonial elite, is largely a formality, as power is largely vested in the Prime Minister and the Boule of Representatives--the successor to the previous colonial Advisory Committee, suffrage for which has been opened to all Pelasgians, rather than just Carian settlers. The resulting Union of Pelasgia is, despite its name, a unitary state, inheriting many of the highly centralised institutions of the Carian colonial regime.

While Pelasgians are happy to finally be free, only time will tell whether the new Propontine government will be able to improve living conditions for the country's populace, who have to make do with high income inequality and a per capita GDP of around 10,000 euromarks despite their country's wealth in resources and industry. Moreover, it also remains to be seen how the various factions which were previously united around the goal of independence will now pursue Pelasgia's future. With the Carian colonialists out of the picture, there is nothing to guarantee that the conservative National Rally, the centrist National Liberal Union, and the progressive Socialist Workers' Party will remain united in their goals and methods. At any rate, Pelasgia is currently still under the interim administration of the old colonial governor, while it awaits elections and the arrival of its new monarchical figurehead. Tellingly, both he and the new Union have much to prove to the Pelasgian people, as well as the international community, who expect Pelasgia to continue its important resource and energy exports without interruption.

Authorities intercept large narcotics shipment from Toyou
Attaleia, 6 May 2022 | Eleni Sotiriou

The Royal Pelasgian Gendarmerie and the Royal Pelasgian Coast Guard have intercepted a large shipment of illegal narcotics originating from Toyou at Pelasgia's eastern port of Attaleia, according to an Interior Ministry statement. The shipment was aboard a @Tianlong flagged cargo freighter, which was otherwise carrying legitimate merchandise. The ship's crew, many of whom seem to have been at least aware of the smuggling attempt, sought to take advantage of the large volume of trade entering Himyar through Pelasgia's east coast to conceal their shipment. The authorities did not reveal how they became aware of the shipment, though they confirmed that the bust was part of a broader international anti-smuggling operation. The crew members, who consist of 12 Tianlong nationals, 8 Central Himyaris, 3 Maghrabis, 1 @Radilo national, and 6 Pelasgians, have been remanded into custody. Their respective embassies have been contacted, while the case is likely to attract international media attention, given the severity of the Pelasgian Penal Code regarding narcotics trafficking, including penalties which go as far as capital punishment.

PAT, Three Major Banks join forces to expand electronic payments
Propontis, 6 May 2022 | Kyriakos Panagiotopoulos

The Pelasgian Telecommunications Authority (PAT), the state-owned company that is Pelasgia's main telecomms provider, has reportedly partnered with three major banks to accelerate and expand the use of electronic payment systems across the country. The banks, which include the Bank of Propontis, the Bank of the Archipelago, and the Imperial Himyari Bank of Commerce, have agreed to link their networks (which account for more than 60% of all Pelasgian transactions) with a payment clearing and wire transfer system supported by PAT's financial services division. The new system would provide merchants and consumers with affordable point-of-service (POS) options for bank card transactions, in addition to streamlining online transfers and payments by removing unnecessary fees and delays. The Ministry of Finance and a series of state-owned or state-adjacent entreprises are reportedly experimenting with allowing payments through the system, by linking it to taxpayers' Tax Registry Number.

Elections: National Rally secures Boule majority, Komnenopoulos to form gov't

The Parliament House, formerly the Advisory Committee Palace, in downtown Propontis

Pelasgia's first legislative election as an independent country took place at the beginning of the week, as planned under the transition of power timeline published by the interim colonial authorities in Propontis. The election resulted in a resounding victory for the conservative National Rally, led by politician and jurist Vasileios Komnenopoulos, who hails from Thermi, Pelasgia's second largest city and a hotbed of conservative politics in the country. The National Rally took advantage of Pelasgia's mixed-member proportional electoral system to sweep single-member rural ridings while garnering around 40% of seats in multi-seat urban ridings. As a result, it claimed 256 of 450 seats in the Boule of Representatives, Pelasgia's unicameral legislature. The two national opposition parties, the National Liberal Union of Pyrgoi-based lawyer and merchant Ioannes Laskarides and the Socialist Workers' Party of Ioannopolis-based civil engineer and career politician Tiverios Argyros-Doukas, won 110 and 84 seats, respectively.

Following this victory, the National Rally is expected to form a government with Mr. Komnenopoulos at its head as Prime Minister, following a largely ceremonial meeting with the Pelasgian monarch, King Andronikos I, earlier today. The victorious National Rally has promised to focus on raising the standard of living of Pelasgians by developping the country's regions and expanding international trade, while reforming colonial-era institutions in a way that does not disrupt the country's social fabric. In this way, the National Rally's programme is much more conservative than that of the centrist-progressive National Liberal Union and the left-wing Socialist Workers' Party, though it still contains a plethora of reforms. More importantly, the National Rally does not associate its brand of Pelasgian nationalism with social progressivism, something which likely earned it the support of the country's notoriously conservative electorate. Of course, as Pelasgian democracy gradually consolidates following decades of colonial rule, and as political institutions mature, there is not guarantee that this attitude will persist. Urban centres, which form an increasingly important part of Pelasgia's population base, were the areas where the two opposition parties made their most significant gains. [...]

Authorities intercept second narcotics shipment, smugglers
Attaleia, 10 May 2022 | Eleni Sotiriou

The Royal Pelasgian Constabulary have intercepted a large shipment of narcotics aboard a small passenger jet flying in from @Radilo, according to a statement by the Interior Minister. The plane, which belonged to Meridian Airlines, was flying in from the city of Radila to Propontis, where it was intercepted due to a reliable tip made to the Pelasgian authorities. Once the plane's passengers had been evacuated, the plane was searched, revealing a 10 kg cocaine shipment hidden in various parts of the aircraft's cargo compartment. The crew and certain members of the ground team were arrested, along with three of the passengers, all of them Pelasgian nationals except for two Radillan passengers. Later that same day, the Royal Pelasgian Coastguard intercepted a cargo vessel carrying illegal immigrants from Hajr and Al-Maghrab to the southern Pelasgian port of Makri. The migrants, numbering 200, were detained pending deportation, while the entirety of the ship's 20 crew members were taken into custody. The ship, which is currently flagged under a Central Himyari Republic flag, has been impounded. According to Interior Ministry sources, the two cases are linked, while they also connected to the large shipment of narcotics intercepted at the port of Attaleia last week. [...]

PAT enters Al-Fashir market, rebrands to PVT Telecom
Propontis, 10 May 2022 | Kyriakos Panagiotopoulos

The Pelasgian Telecommunications Authority (PAT), the state-owned company that is Pelasgia's main telecomms provider and postal service, has decided to rebrand itself as the PVT Telecom and to open a large part of its shares to private ownership, as part of an effort to modernise itself following the country's decolonisation. PVT hopes to lead the Himyari continent as a provider of internet and telecomms services, having evolved from its original role as a state monopoly to limited to the former Carian colony. Indeed, with the Pelasgian market now open to private competition, PVT is faced with the need to grow its operations to remain competitive. The first step in this plan comes with the company's expansion into the market of Al-Fashir (@Markus), a central Himyari nation whose banks previously expressed interest in an electronic payment system similar to the one undertaken by the telecomms giant for Pelasgia's three largest banks. PVT is discussing the creation of such a system in Al-Fashar, while also negotiating with the local government to offer its services to the country's large, growing market through a subsidiary. [...]

Pelasgian oil, natural gas sales boost currency, investor confidence
Propontis, 15 May 2022 | Kyriakos Panagiotopoulos

The main building of the Propontis Stock Exchange (PROPEX), established in 1832

Pelasgian Petroleum S.A. (PelPetrol) and the Pelasgian Natural Gas Corporation (PEFA) have both increased their production of petroleum and natural gas to match growing demand for their goods in the wake of oil and gas supply disruptions in Hajr and Al-Maghrab due to the Tarusan-Frankish invasion of those two Himyari countries. The two state-owned monopolies are following a deliberate policy set by the new National Rally government, which seeks to expand Pelasgia's role as a global and regional purveyor of fossil fuels as a means of supporting the country's economic reforms. Both companies made their sales to foreign buyers conditional on the use of Pelasgian obols as the currency of exchange. As a result, global demand for the newly minted Pelasgian currency skyrocketed, significantly increasing the value of the obol, which had initially been pegged to equal the Carian obol during the transitional period following the end of colonial rule.

The Central Bank of Pelasgia, the currency's issuer, has responded by revising its . Initially, the smallest denomination to be printed was to be I50, whereas the largest was to be I5000. However, with the obol's value more than doubling, the Central Bank has decided to issue a second series of notes, including brand-new I5 and I20 banknotes and coins, while also retiring the I5000 note.

Meanwhile, at Galatopyrgos, the mercantile district of Propontis where the Propontis Stock Exchange (PROPEX) is located, investors were euphoric about the prospects of the newly independent country's economy. Prime Minister Vasileios Komnenopoulos' conservative government has promised stability and respect for investments and property rights, while avoiding more radical labour law reforms that had scared investors, opting for targeted public insurance schemes instead. With growing privatisation and deregulation initiatives, as well as an advantageous tax and labour and business law framework, many foreign and domestic investors see the Pelasgian market as being ripe for profit. Apart from reinvest the gains of skyrocketing oil and gas profits into further industrial expansion, Propontis hopes to use its robust industrial sector (one of Himyar and the Meridian's largest), as well as its massive merchant marine, to fuel a gradual growth of the services economy in major coastal cities. This mirrors the approach used in other urbanising and developping countries to enrich themselves, while also fitting in well with Mr. Komnenopoulos' commitment to "raise Pelasgians' standard of living through economic growth, rather than handouts". Government experiments with Modern Pelasgian language instruction in schools
Attaleia, 15 May 2022 | Perikles Nomikos

Newly appointed Minister of National Education, Mr. Ioannes Ragaves has announced an initiative to increase primary and secondary-school instruction in the form of modern Pelasgo-Carian used by everyday Pelasgians, rather than the archaic ancient/scholarly version used in official and ecclesiastic contexts (known as "katharevousa"). The Minister has commissioned distinguished linguistics and philology professor Ioulios Rhodokanakis of the Royal Academy of Pelasgia to author a new standardised grammar book for modern Pelasgo-Carian. This grammar will initially be used for primary and secondary instruction in certain select schools, as part of an experiment to increase literacy and academic attainment among working-class Pelasgians.

If the experiment succeeds, the reform might be expanded to all schools. The Minister has clarified that separate ancient Pelasgian language and literature courses will be retained alongside the new modern Pelasgian language and literature courses. The form of language to be used is a "conservative, moderate midway" between ancient scholarly Pelasgo-Carian and modern demotic Pelasgo-Carian, to be called "Standard Modern Pelasgian". The term "Pelasgian" rather than "Pelasgo-Carian" reportedly indicates the Minister's wish to focus on the everyday dialect spoken in Pelasgia, without reference to the slightly different and internally diverse dialects used across the Meridian in Caria. The main dialect to be used for the new grammar will likely be that of middle-class educated Propontines, which already prominently features in Pelasgian media.

Some more conservative social elements, as well as some members of the radical wing of the Socialist Workers' Party, have pushed back against this initiative. [...]

Boule enacts MeSCoP - Meridian Union Treaty
Propontis, 15 May 2022 | Georgios Theodorides

The Boule of Representatives has voted in favour of legislation enacting the Meridian Sea Cooperation Program (MeSCoP - Meridian Union) Treaty into Pelasgian domestic law. The legislation has been forwarded to the Great Palace of Propontis, where it is expected to receive royal assent by His Majesty the King by tomorrow. Pelasgia's membership into the MeSCoP - Meridian Union was supported both by the governing National Rally, which holds a majority of seats in the Boule, as well as the official opposition, the National Liberal Union. The two parties' leaders, Messrs. Vasileios Komnenopoulos and Ioannes Laskarides, agreed on the benefits the expanded Meridian Union could bring to the lives and everyday prosperity of Pelasgians, as well as to the region as a whole. However, the other opposition party in the Boule, the Socialist Workers' Party of Mr. Tiverios Doukas-Argyros, opposed the measure, seeing it as a way for the "dominant bourgeoisie" in the Meridian Sea nations to undercut their domestic labour supplies and to circumvent domestic political processes, trade protections, and labour regulations in favour of a "neo-liberal free-trade agenda". Speaking before the Boule, Mr. Doukas-Argyros pointed to the promptness with which Mr. Komnenopoulos' tabled the enacting legislation so soon after Pelasgia's application to join the bloc was approved by @Ebria, @Radilo, and the @Rheinbund as an example of the government's commitment to such an agenda. Government to strengthen banking secrecy law
Propontis, 22 May 2022 | Kyriakos Panagiotopoulos

/
The historical head office of the Bank of Propontis in Pyrgos financial district, Propontis M.D.

The National Rally government of Prime Minister Vasileios Komnenopoulos has made known its intent to strengthen Pelasgia's already robust banking law by introducing a series of reforms to reinforce banking secrecy for both Pelasgian and foreign account holders. According to government sources, Pelasgia would, for the first time, accept the practice of numbered bank accounts, whereby bank accounts are registered to a number (rather than the owner's name) which is only known to the banker and the account holder. Stiff criminal penalties would be added to existing civil and administrative remedies to reinforce a prohibition on revealing client information and account ownership details without the consent of the account holder or a court order pursuant to a valid criminal complaint. Additionally, laws would be enacted to formally enshrined the practice of banking cryptography and to clearly delineate situations in which exceptions could be made therefrom (e.g., for reasons of national security).

Pelasgia already boasts a strong banking sector due to its place as a traditional gateway for Gallo-Germanian and Meridian capital into the Himyari continent. This is in great part due to its own economic preeminence, as well as the long links between the Pelasgian banking system and those other major capital and financial markets, particularly during the periods of Radillan-Latin domination, Engell protectorate and colonial rule, and Carian administration. The incumbent conservative government, which has chosen to retain and maintain many colonial-era institutions (such as an independent central bank and a strong, independent judiciary), as well as practicing fiscal and budgetary responsibility, has earned the continued confidence and support of both domestic and foreign capital holders. As such, it comes as little surprise that these measures have earned the support of much of the banking sector, as well as the business community. Nonetheless, many left-wing political groups have criticised the government's approach, accusing Mr. Komnenopoulos of wishing to "turn the Union into a giant money laundering operation". [...]

Foreign Minister announces humanitarian aid to Azraq, lambasts Gallo-Germanian neo-colonialism
Tokjin (Tianlong), 22 May 2022 | Georgios Theodorides (via Propontis News Agency)

Foreign Minister Anaxandros Metaxas announced the provision of humanitarian aid to the Abrahamic State of @Azraq, following an appeal by the central Himyari country's authorities for international help in dealing with massive refugee inflows from Hajr and Al-Maghrab. The Minister made the announcement during a press conference at the city of Tokjin, in @Tianlong, where Mr. Metaxas is personally heading the Pelasgian delegation to the Forum on Security and Democracy. As part of his remarks, the top Pelasgian diplomat made it clear that the Union is committed to providing further aid for the resettlement, nourishment, and support of the hundreds of thousands of people displaced by the invasion of Hajr and Al-Maghrab by Tarusa and the Holy Frankish Empire. Nonetheless, the Minister overtly voiced his discontent with the invasion, noting that "the best way to support the people of Hajr and Al-Maghrab is to find a way to stop the bombing and pillaging of their nations by external powers". The Minister's remarks was potentially also directed at @Skånskelag, which is reportedly trying to set up its own sphere of influence in the area.

Mr. Metaxas' remarks are in keeping with a long-established Pelasgian foreign policy position of discouraging external, particularly Gallo-Germanian, intervention in Himyar, in addition to promoting Himyari solidarity, self-rule, and self-reliance. [...]

Royals announce second pregnancy during warship commissioning
Daphnium, 22 May 2022 | Eleni Sotiriou

During a ceremony at the harbour of Daphnium, south of Propontis, the royal couple announced that they are expecting a second child, a boy, who is to be born sometime in 2023. Their Majesties, King Andronicus and Queen Claudia, were in Daphnium to attend the official christening ceremony of the HPMS Andronicus I, the second Archipelago-class amphibious assault ship/light aircraft carrier of the Royal Pelasgian Navy. The Andronicus I, which is named after the reigning monarch, was already under construction at the Royal Pelasgian Shipyards in Daphnium when Pelasgia gained its independence; the ship, alongside the leading ship of her class, the Archipelago (which had been completed and was awaiting its launching), had both been ordered by the Royal Carian Navy. Nevertheless, with Pelasgia's independence, the Carian military no longer needed the vessels and instead chose to gift them to the new Pelasgian King (who is a Carian prince of the blood), in order to avoid lengthy legal disputes over title to the vessels. At any rate, the announcement of the royal couple, made by His Majesty next to the now-visibly pregnant royal consort, stole the spotlight from the multi-million euromark capital ship. Indeed, though many had already anticipated news to be broken soon, after months of rumours regarding the Queen's pregnancy, the revelation of the to-be-born prince's gender took the Pelasgian media and public by storm. The Abrahamic State of Azraq thanks the Union of Pelasgia for its generous offer of humanitarian aid and strong words of solidarity in opposition to the neocolonialist actions of the Gothic Sea Pact. The conflict in the Magrab and Hajr is a tragedy that has caused needless bloodshed and human suffering. We can assure you Azraq is doing everything within its power to bring a swift end to the fighting.

Foreign Zionist activists detained at Propontis Intl Airport

Automated passport control booths at the customs section of Propontis International Airport

A group of six foreign nationals destined for Hierosolyma were detained at Propontis International Airport and are being held pending deportation on national security and false declaration grounds. The group, which includes four citizens of @Vrijpoort and one national of Thuringau and @Ebria each, had entered Pelasgia on tourist visas (except for the visa-free Ebrian), travelling on Meridian Air flight 718 from San Lawrenz International Airport to Propontis International Airport. The group was scheduled to take a connecting flight provided by Archipelago Airlines to Hierosolyma International Airport; however, one of them was detained for further questioning by officers due to evasive and contradictory answers to standard immigration questions. Per standard practice, all individuals travelling together were also held, and officers decided to hold individual interrogations for the entire group.

According to a statement by the Royal Pelasgian Constabulary, officers' conversations with the travellers revealed that they were not, in fact, travelling to Pelasgia for touristic purposes, as the agency they claimed to have booked a travel plan with was known to authorities to be fraudulent based on past cases. Instead, their only true reservation was at a hotel in Hierosolyma, where the group were discovered to have been invited as speakers at a conference regarding the secession of Philistaea District from the Union to form an independent Jewish state. At that point, all six individuals were arrested, and their phones and other electronics were searched, revealing messages alluding to a planned provocation of some kind involving the Church of Saint Mary on the Temple Mount.

All six individuals have been denied entry to Pelasgia due to false declarations, as well as due to posing a serious national security threat to the territorial integrity of the Union. Authorities reportedly plan to deport the group and bar them future entry, with a hearing before the Immigration and Asylum Department of the Interior Ministry being scheduled for next week. At the same time, an official investigation has been launched the group that had invited the foreign nationals to Hierosolyma, with the General Intelligence and Security Service taking over the matter. Liberals adopt republican platform, snub King's Birthday preparations
Propontis, 27 May 2022 | Georgios Theodorides (via Propontis News Agency)

The National Liberal Union (EEF), Pelasgia's official opposition, has formally adopted republicanism as a tenet of its platform following a vote by the National Party Congress earlier this week. Previously, the EEF was neutral on the issue, including both monarchist and republican factions, in contrast to the monarchist, conservative National Rally and the republican, leftist Socialist Workers' Party (SEKP). Nevertheless, a large poll conducted by Palmos Analytics for the Pelasgian public broadcaster, PERT, earlier this month seemed to have given EEF leader Ioannes Laskarides the political backing he needed to impose his republican viewpoint on the rest of the party. According to the pool, only 23% of Pelasgians favour the monarchy, while 51% are actively in favour of a republic. The remainder 26% are undecided, though a majority of all Pelasgians (71%) favour a much reduced role for the Crown.

According to a document circulated to party members and the public alike, the EEF proposes the abolition of the monarchy and its replacement with a president who would be appointed by the legislature for a set number of terms. According to the document, the EEF regards the monarchy as being both a leftover of the old Carian colonial regime without any historical root in Pelasgia, as well as an outdated and undemocratic institution, which consumes considerable tax revenue on pompous ceremonies and luxurious living expenses without much real political power. The National Liberals posit that a ceremonial presidency would eliminate many of these costs as well as the negative heritage associated with the House of Notaras' continued reign over the newly independent Union, while simultaneously preserving the parliamentary system inherited from the Carians and the Engells without significant disruptions—and without the potential for the president to become a strongman (given his limited term and powers).

Following this change in policy, the EEF has announced that it will not be attending any festivities to mark the King's birthday on June 11, along with any preparations therefor. In this, it joins the SEKP, which had already ruled out any possibility of its participation in such events from early on. [...]

Government unveils preparations for summer wildfire season
Fossatum, 27 May 2022 | Perikles Nomikos

Speaking from the capital of Tiverias District, Fossatum, in the west of the country, Interior Minister Xenophon Oikonomou unveiled the government's plan for this summer's wildfire season. Mr. Oikonomou was joined by the heads of the local and national civil defence authorities, as well as the director of the National Ambulance Service, Michael Efstathiou, and the commander of the Royal Pelasgia Fire Service, Lt. Gen. Polyvios Vasileiades, who were in the area to observe large-scale preparedness drills by their services. Rising global temperatures and a particularly dry spring have raised alarm throughout the Union about the possibility of an intense fire season, while many also fear that certain residents of rural localities might attempt to ignite forested areas to clear them. Apart from heightened readiness and renewed response and evacuation plans throughout the country, the government has also started a campaign to inform Pelasgians as well as foreign visitors regarding the danger of discarding cigarettes and other flammable rubbish on roadsides or other dry areas. Boule selects Laskarides as PM following Komnenopoulos' sudden death
Propontis, 1 June 2022 | Georgios Theodorides (via Propontis News Agency)

You must be registered for see images

Mr. Laskarides addresses the Boule following his election as Prime Minister

A sudden heart attack on the night of May 31st saw Vasileios Komnenopoulos, the first Prime Minister of Pelasgia since its independence, transferred to Propontis Central Military Hospital. With the Foreign Minister, Alexandros Metaxas, taking over as acting head of government in the intervening hours, Pelasgians would have to wait until before dawn on June 1st to be informed of the premier's death. Doctors stated that the causes of the incident appear to be natural, citing Mr. Komnenopoulos' age of nearly seventy years in their short announcement. A few hours later, around noontime on June 1st and with funeral preparations still underway, the Boule of Representatives met in an emergency session to select the new prime minister. Whereas most expected Mr. Metaxas to be elevated to the premiership, almost the entirety of the centrist wing of Mr. Komnenopoulos' conservative National Rally defected to the National Liberal Union of Ioannes Laskarides, overturning this assumption.

Mr. Laskarides was thus acclaimed Prime Minister with 254 votes in his favour, consisting entirely of the now-majority National Liberal Union. Speaking before the Boule, whose entire body of members was dressed in black suits and ties as a sign of mourning for Mr. Komnenopoulos, Mr. Laskarides affirmed that there would be no snap election to ensure the country's stability. He further vowed to continue the work started by Mr. Komnenopoulos to modernise and enrich Pelasgia, while noting that the new government would also undertake "bold social reforms" that the previous government "was hesitant to enact for political reasons". The new Prime Minister's speech ended with a eulogy for his predecessor, hailing the immense contributions of Mr. Komnenopoulos on Pelasgia's path to regaining its independence over a political career that lasted more than forty years. This earned the premier a standing ovation by the entire legislature, somewhat blunting the sting of the day's events for the now-opposition National Rally.

At the end of Mr. Laskarides' speech, the Boule of Representatives voted unanimously to rename Propontis International Airport after Mr. Komnenopoulos, noting that he had planned the airport's construction twenty years prior as a senior official in the then-Carian administration of Pelasgia. Both this motion and the motion of confidence in favour of Mr. Laskarides have been ceremonially forwarded to the Great Palace for Royal Assent. [...]

Academic admin, ecclesiastical authorities clash at Patriarchal University of Propontis
Propontis, 1 June 2022 | Kyriakos Panagiotopoulos

Scandal has erupted at the Patriarchal University of Propontis, Europe's oldest university and Pelasgia's most prestigious academic institution, following a very public confrontation between the academic and ecclesiastical authorities regarding control over the University's curriculum. The University is nominally a body constituted and operated by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of the Pelasgian Orthodox Church in Propontis, despite its long history of autonomy and self-administration. For this reason, though a body of clerics nominally form the University's Board of Governors, everyday administrative duties are carried out by the academic staff. Nonetheless, continued attempts by the clerical overseers to limit the academics' curriculum to avoid infringing the Church's perspective in various subjects have led to a confrontation between the two over who has final authority on questions of curriculum.

The controversy received wide publicity after one of the clerics threatened to excommunicate a group of professors, and another floated the idea that the Board would replace the academic staff. In response, a group of professors have threatened to bring legal action, reportedly retaining a major Propontine law firm (Neroulas & Associates LLP) in anticipation of litigation before Propontis District Court. The university's student association has publicly come out in support of the academic side of the debate, as has the Royal Academy of Pelasgia (commonly known as the "Magnaura" after its seat). The newly appointed Minister of Education, Mr. Tiverios Photiades, has called on the two sides to resolve the dispute amicably, failing which he has not ruled out government action. After all, educational reform has long been a major platform item of the now-governing National Liberal Union. [...]

Two Central Himyaris pulled from flight at Petralona Intl Airport
Fossatum, 1 June 2022 | Eleni Sotiriou

Two nationals of the Central Himyari Republic have been removed from their flight and detained, a spokesman for the Royal Pelasgian Constabulary has announced. The two individuals were detained on terrorism and various smuggling charges, pending a series of Pelasgian and foreign warrants. Central Himyari Airlines flight 307, which the two men were on, was bound for Nauplia, Caria, having taken off from Kalamba City International Airport. However, the flight was forced to land at Petralona International Airport in southern Pelasgia when the Pelasgian authorities were informed of the high risk of a terror incident by their counterparts in Central Himyar. Though no such threat materialised, the two wanted individuals were discovered among the passengers of the airplane, who had been temporarily forced to disembark while security teams searched the plane for explosives. Prime Minister, King face off over higher education reform bill

A growing political row has unfolded in Propontis between newly elected Prime Minister Ioannes Laskarides of the National Liberal Union (EEF) and His Majesty King Andronicus I of Pelasgia. The controversy regards a bill tabled by the Minister of Education, Tiverios Photiades, before the Boule of Representatives to reform higher education in the country. The bill comes in the wake of a dispute at the Patriarchal University of Propontis (PPP), where ecclesiastical authorities nominally overseeing the university's functioning as a body of the Pelasgian Orthodox Church and academics constituting PPP's everyday administration. The two attracted great publicity by debating over whether the Church or the academics should have final authority over curriculum determinations, before the Education Minister finally intervened to mediate the dispute. Once mediation talks failed, the fault for which the Government attributed to the Church's intransigence, Mr. Photiades unveiled a bill to place higher education under state oversight and secularise it. Though an educational reform law was long in the works by the EEF, being on of the party's main electoral commitments, most analysts agree that it was likely strengthened in response to the confrontation.

The proposed law, entitled Law No. 57/2022 "An Act respecting higher education", was supported by the student unions and faculty of all major Pelasgian universities, in addition to the Royal Academy of Pelasgia (commonly known as the "Magnaura" after its seat in the old senate house). The Magnaura in particular came out in support of the bill, with its president, renowned philologist Ioulios Rhodokanakis, endorsing its core provisions as "long overdue to bring Pelasgian higher education into the twenty-first century". This remark drew the ire of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, but also of many established elite factions, particularly the aristocracy, who fear that increasing state control over universities might expand meritocracy, leading to a loss of privilege in favour of adept and social mobile commoners and poorer Pelasgians. Whereas the Carian colonial authorities had avoided such measures to keep local elites happy and loyal, the democratically elected government of independent Pelasgia has no such obstacles; indeed, whereas the formerly governing National Rally (ES) relied on these same elites for support, the National Liberal Union relies largely on the urban middle class as a power base, strengthening its incentive to democratise higher education.

The specific controversy between the Crown and the Prime Minister arose early this morning, when, in response to the bill's tabling before the Boule for debate, a spokesman for the Great Palace announced that the King "might withhold Royal Assent from radical measures that compromise social harmony and the privileges of the established Church". This remark drew wide condemnation from the EEF and the Socialist Workers' Party of Pelasgia (SEKP), the country's unofficial opposition. Though the official opposition, the ES, initially voiced support for the Crown, once it became clear that public sentiment was against the bill, most ES representatives chose to remain silent or call for compromise. The Government, for its part, is committed to pushing ahead with the bill, with the Prime Minister, Mr. Laskarides, stating his intent to "take all such measures as might be necessary to end an institutional gridlock and safeguard the democratic will and rights of the Pelasgian Nation". Ominous as the remark is, its meaning remains open to wide and diverse speculation.

Boule deposes King, proclaims Republic

The Great Palace of Propontis, the official seat of the Pelasgian head of state

In response to King Andronicus' decision to withhold royal assent to key government legislation, the Boule of Representatives has adopted an Act of Deposition by which a supermajority of deputies (338 out of 450) have voted to depose the King. Additionally, the Boule has also adopted (with 366 votes) a Constitutional Amendment by which it purports to replace the monarch with a President. The Boule has chosen to appoint the current Grand Despot of Pelasgia (that is, the most senior non-reigning noble in the country) as the country's Acting President; that title currently falls to Rear Admiral Alexios Tzamantouros, head of the House of Tzamantouros, the sole remaining cadet branch of the Vatatzes-Laskaris Dynasty, which was Pelasgia's last independent royal house prior to foreign rule. By reason of this ancestry, the newly elected President, Alexios Vatatzes-Tzamantouros, is also a cousin of the deposed King, whose mother, Queen Eudocia of Caria, was also a member of the House of Vatatzes, but with less seniority.

On Saturday, the Act of Deposition was tabled before the Boule by the Prime Minister, Ioannes Laskarides, who argued that King Andronicus' reign was illegitimate due to "ancient principles of Pelasgian law" which prevent a foreigner from sitting on the Propontine Throne; and also that, by frustrating the manifest will of a supermajority of the Boule, the King had "violated his constitutional duties, thereby relieving Pelasgians of any duty of fealty to him". The Socialist Workers' Party (SEKP) supported the Act of Deposition. Its support for the Constitutional Amendment was earned with assurances that the new head of state would not be hereditary; likewise, the governing National Liberal Union (EEF) secured the support of conservative opposition, the National Rally (ES), by choosing the aforementioned Grand Despot as the country's first elected head of state. Upon the two acts' passage, the new President, who was heretofore serving as head of Military Counterintelligence and a senior naval staff officer, resigned his commissions to accept the duties conferred upon him by the Boule.

As for the royal family of the now-deposed House of Notaras, they have apparently accepted their deposition without resistance, though the ex-King has refused to abdicate. Since the start of the political crisis, the royals had left the Great Palace of Propontis for the Palace of Selymbria (the traditional summer residence of Propontine rulers in Optimatoi District northeast of Propontis); it was there that a delegation of Boule deputies led by the Prime Minister and the newly elected Sebastokrator went to deliver the news to them, thereby moving them to accept the two Acts as faits accomplis and leave Pelasgia. Though Queen Claudia is from the @Rheinbund, the royals have chosen to return to Caria, where the deposed King Andronicus is still a Prince of the Blood. As for the new President, he has taken up residence in the Great Palace of Propontis, along with his wife, Irene Komnene, and other members of their family. It was there that the new head of state greeted the celebrating crowds of the Pelasgian capital with a firework display and massive celebrations, which are to accompany a formal inauguration ceremony at the next divine liturgy at the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

With this move, Pelasgia, now an republic and no longer a monarchy, has cut off its last formal links with the Crown of Caria. And though its written constitution remains largely unchanged apart from a few adjustments regarding the head of state, most in Propontis see in this the beginning of a period of reform and change for the newly reborn country. Some fear that this step will deeply worsen relations between the two formerly brotherly states; however, others look to the recent marriage of the new President's son, Theodore Vatatzes-Tzamantouros, with the heiress to the Duchy of Thoricus in Caria, Maria Renti, as the conduit for continued close relations. At any rate, governments on both sides of the Meridian understand that the two countries economies and societies are far too closely linked to function without cooperation, even if it might finally time for each their governments' workings to be wholly separate and distinct.

The sudden death of Prime Minister Komnenopoulos is a shock to us. He was a great man who meant much for Pelasgia. We will keep him in our memories as such. The flags at the Rheinian embassy and all the Rheinian consulates will be flown half-mast with a black banner during the mourning period. Also the flag at the Chancellery will be flown half-mast with a black banner. Our condolences to the people of Pelasgia, and to family and friends of Prime-Minister Komnenopoulos.

We congratulate Prime-Minister Laskarides with becoming the new Prime-Minister of Pelasgia. We wish him good luck and all the wisdom he needs. We look forward to prospering relations between Pelasgia and the Rheinbund.

Yours sincerely,

The deposition of His Majesty King Andronicus comes to us as a surprise. We are happy though that the Royal Family was not harmed and was given opportunity to leave the country in good health. Especially the Fürst of Casparringen feels relieved that his daughter, his son-in-law and his grandchild are in good health. Being part of Rheinian nobility, His Majesty King Andronicus, Sophie von Homburg-Gosta and their children are welcome in the Rheinbund, both as guests and to live their exile.

Yours sincerely,

Educational Reform Act signed into law by President
Propontis, 12 June 2022 | Georgios Theodorides (via Propontis News Agency)

The Great Hall of the Senate Building of the National University of Propontis (EPP)

Almost a month after the controversy surrounding the Educational Reform Act erupted, the first President of the Union, Grand Despot Alexios Vatatzes-Tzamantouros, has signed the bill into law. With a stroke of a pen, the basis for a fundamental revamping of the country's education system has been set; and yet, it took the final abolition of the Carian monarchy in Pelasgia and the transformation of the country into a federation before the straw that finally broke the back of the camel of cooperation between the Great Palace and the Parliament House was finally granted formal assent. Supported by both the National Liberal Union (EEF) and the Socialist Workers' Party (SEKP), the bill was opposed by the conservative National Rally (ES) alone. Given the EEF's own absolute majority in the Boule, this made the ES' opposition largely irrelevant. Matters were much the same in the Senate, where Prime Minister Ioannes Laskarides' EEF also holds a majority.

In spite of protests by both conservative elites and the powerful traditionalist factions of the Orthodox Church, the newly enacted law has formally secularised Pelasgian universities and placed them under government care. The crown jewel of the Pelasgian educational system, the Patriarchal University of Propontis, has been removed from the Ecumenical Patriarchate's jurisdiction and handed over to its academic stuff under the appropriate name National University of Propontis (EPP). This has also taken place with other universities, such as the University of Thermi. However, the new law has gone beyond university reform, reflecting the EEF's unwillingness to compromise with conservative elites any longer. The new law has removed the Church from the national curriculum oversight body of the federal Education Ministry, instead granting that power solely to a board of federal and polity educational officials.

Under the law, Pelasgian parents are granted the right to educate their child in a school of their choosing under a voucher system. At the same time, the National Education Council retains oversight and control over all school programmes and curricula, and it has made its intent to modernise education to serve "social progress and the advancement of the Nation" clear. Nat'l Liberal Union leading polls ahead of upcoming polity elections
Pyrgoi, 12 June 2022 | Kyriakos Panagiotopoulos

Concluding the electoral campaign for the 2022 elections in the polities, Pelasgia's federated states, Prime Minister Ioannes Laskarides spoke in his native city of Pyrgoi on the island of Ophioussa in the Archipelago with great confidence and a distinct tone of anticipation. Though one could say much the same about any political leader, in Mr. Laskarides' case, the polls seemed to back him: the National Liberal Union (EEF), his party, is set to secure majorities or pluralities in nearly three fourths of the Union's eighteen polities (the nineteenth federated entity, the Exarchate of Tephanon, is a federal territory governed by a federally appointed Exarch). Since the Governors of Pelasgian polities are elected by their respective Legislative Assemblies (much like the federal Prime Minister), this would likely give the EEF dominance over nearly the entire Union and a free hand to enact its policy. And while compromises with the conservative ES or the socialist SEKP will likely have to be made in various states (most notably Philistaea), circumstances point to an ability of the EEF to play the two opposition parties against each other. For now, it appears that the conservative regional elites who opposed the strongly federalist EEF will be sorely disappointed by the country's regional elections, thereby depriving them of the ability to seriously hamper the EEF's agenda in the name of states' rights. Since the Pelasgian Senate is filled by Senators dispatched by the polity governments for a term equal to their own, this will also give the EEF complete control over both houses of the federal legislature (albeit short of a supermajority). Engagement of President's daughter to Rheinish Prince announced
Engelsheim, 12 June 2022 | Eleni Sotiriou

A spokesperson for the Presidential Household has announced that the Union President's eldest daughter, Anna Vatatzaina, is to be married to the Crown Prince of the Sovereignty of Sigmaringen in the @Rheinbund, Philipp von Schallenberg, following the couple's formal engagement. HRH Prince Philipp (b. 19 January 2001) is a first year student in his native Rheinbund, after completing his two years of national service. It was there that he first met the Despotess of Pelasgia, while she was on academic exchange. Irene Vatatzaina is the second of the Presidential couple's children and she studies archaeology and history, following in the footsteps of her mother, Grand Despotess Irene Komnene-Mangapha, who is a renowned professor. Apart from the newly engaged Despotess, only one other of the presidential couple's six children (Theodore, Anna, Basil, Alexia, Demetrius, Despoina) is of age: the eldest, Theodore Vatatzes, who is currently an officer in the Pelasgian Navy and the Governor of the federal territory (Exarchate) of Tephanon. Theodore is married to Maria Renti, the heiress to the Duchy of Thoricus in Caria, after the two met on a religious pilgrimage in Pelasgia. All six of the presidential offspring are hereditary Despots of Pelasgia due to their father's status as hereditary Grand Despot of Pelasgia (i.e., the country's most senior non-reigning noble). The Great Palace has sought to use this noble status for diplomatic purposes, as well as to solidify the powerful internal political position of the House of Vatatzes, which occupies the largely ceremonial but still considerably important and influential Presidency of the Union, alongside several other high offices of state. The President's political ally, Prime Minister Ioannes Laskarides, has been more than supportive of these marriages, judging them to be in the Union's diplomatic interest.

Polity elections: Nationwide results published by Interior Ministry

The first session of the Legislative Assembly of Propontis Metropolitan Polity

The Federal Ministry of the Interior (YPES) has published its official results for this year's general elections, which were held simultaneously in all nineteen Pelasgian federative units, which include the eighteen polities (states) of Pelasgia, as well as the exarchate (federal territory) of Tephanon. For the most part, the results were a resounding victory for incumbent federal Prime Minister Ioannes Laskarides, whose party, the National Liberal Union (EEF), obtained a majority or at least a coalition government in most states, thereby confirming the federal premier's pre-electoral optimism.

More specifically, the EEF was able to obtain a majority in practically all coastal and insular polities, which are Pelasgia's most urbanised and wealthiest regions, as well as the traditional base of the liberal EEF. In particular, the EEF obtained majorities in the legislative assemblies of Pera, Propontis Metropolitan Polity (M.P.), Optimatoi, Kleisoura, Pelagonia, Lycaonia, Pieria, the Archipelago, and Hagios Georgios. Additionally, the EEF formed coalition governments in Peraica (with the Socialist Workers' Party of Pelasgia) and in Sebasteia (with the National Rally). For its part, the official opposition on the federal level, the National Rally (ES), was able to form majority governments in Philistaea, Tiverias, Metaxadon, and Makriotica. Finally, the unofficial opposition, the Socialist Workers' Party of Pelasgia (SEKP), obtained majorities in Bucellaria, Antiperaica, and Cibyrrha.

Since Pelasgia's states al have parliamentary governments, their respective governors are elected by the legislature similar to the federal prime minister. One notable exception to this is the Exarchate of Tephanon, which, by reason of its status as a federal territory lacking inherent sovereignty, only possesses an advisory body, the Advisory Committee, to make non-binding recommendations to the federally-appointed Exarch. There, the EEF and the ES were able to obtain a majority over SEKP, though both the Exarch (the governor general) and the Superintendent General (the premier-like official in charge of most daily government matters) are federally appointed, and thus affiliated with the EEF.

Since Pelasgian Senate positions are filled with delegates dispatched by the government of each polity, it is expected that the EEF will hold a majority of 20 out of the Senate's 36 seats (or 55%), assuming that coalition partners are each given on of their polity's two seats. This would leave the ES and SEKP with 9 and 7 Senators, respectively. [...]

Government adopts Modern Pelasgian as official language
Propontis, 16 June 2022 | Perikles Nomikos

A week after the passage of its landmark Educational Reform Act, the federal government has amended the Official Language Act to establish Standard Modern Pelasgian as the sole official language of Pelasgia. In doing so, the government has formally abolished the use of Ancient Pelasgo-Carian as Pelasgia's official language, bringing official and public documents and speech in line with the speech used by everyday people. Until now, a form of Ancient Pelasgo-Carian known as "katharevousa" or "pure", "literary" Pelasgo-Carian was in official use in both Pelasgia and Caria, while most people in both countries speak various dialects of what is known as "demotic", "popular" or "modern" Pelasgo-Carian.

For the purposes of the reform, the federal government has designated the Modern Pelasgian Grammar published by distinguished linguistics and philology professor Ioulios Rhodokanakis of the National Academy of Pelasgia at the Magnaura as the standard guide for the new official language. Thus, Propontis has adopted a mild variant of modern Pelasgo-Carian which stands between antiquated katharevousa and more crass full-on demotic as its new "Standard Modern Pelasgian" language, largely using the everyday language of middle class Propontines as a basis. The government noted that, contrary to some more radical proposals, traditional orthography and polytonic script will continue to be used to ensure linguistic continuity.

This reform has prompted lively discussion in Pelasgia and abroad, with circles in both the Church and even nearby Caria debating a similar measure. [...]

Division between Reformist and Traditionalist circles within Orthodox Church turns political
Hierosolyma, 16 June 2022 | Petros Damaskenos

Recent debates within the Orthodox Church have increasingly drawn the public eye as clashes between Traditionalist and Reformist elements within the Church have taken on a political hue. During this week's Grand Synod of the Orthodox Church, in which representatives of all Patriarchates, Autocephalous Churches, and Metropoles from across Europe met, two distinct factions seemed to form for the first time. On the one hand, the Traditionalists, lead by the Patriarch of @Tarusa and and the Patriarch of Hierosolyma, voiced their opposition to any reform of the Church's doctrines and practices, and also made an avowed statement in favour of monarchy and against republicanism and liberalism worldwide. On the opposite side, the Patriarchs of Edessa and Anaxandretta (in Hajr) called for major reform to modernise the Church, while also denouncing absolutism and opposition to democracy and global cooperation as "outdated". The Ecumenical Patriarch of Propontis called for restraint on all sides but stopped short of endorsing any reform, likely fearing centrifugal forces in Kremlyov and the government in Propontis (which has the ancient legal power to fire and replace him) in equal measure. Nevertheless, as the new liberal regime in Propontis shows increasing willingness to pursue its reforming agenda at home and abroad, and as it will likely need to enlist the support of the Orthodox Church, it is likely that he might be replaced in favour of a condidate who is less likely to obstruct Propontis' new official policy.

Feds replace two Patriarchs, secularize state

The Co-Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Propontis, often called the "Second Hagia Pronoia"

The federal government has surprised both supporters and opponents by taking two radical steps to fulfill its agenda of modernisation and secularisation: over the weekend, Propontis replaced both the Ecumenical Patriarch and the Patriarch of Hierosolyma, in addition to enacting a law formally transforming Pelasgia into a secular state (though with some limited historical privileges still recognised to the formerly established Orthodox Church). Firstly, on Saturday, the Presidency of the Union responded to an ongoing row between the Church's pro- and anti-reform factions, and the apparent intransigence or failure to mediate of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, by making use of the Pelasgian head of state's traditional power to dismiss the Patriarch and replace him. In this case, Propontis dismissed a cautious conservative, Dionysius VII of Propontis, with Bishop Tiberius of Thermi, a moderate reformer, who became Patriarch Tiberius VIII. This angered the Patriarch of Hierosolyma, the arch-conservative Ambrosius V, who was arrested by the Federal Politarchy for inciting public disorder after he called for "resistance", and also dismissed in favour of the more moderate Anastasius VII. Though this led to some minor scuffles overnight in Hierosolyma, by Sunday, tensions in the Holy City had largely subsided, fizzling out as the Federal Politarchs gave way to Municipal Astynomia officers closer to the evening.

In Propontis, however, the federal government was preparing for an even bigger hit: on Monday, it formally enacted the Secularisation and Church Property Act (2022), adding it to the Federal Code of Fundamental Legislation (a book which includes Pelasgia's most important federal laws as distinct "chapters"). By way of this Act, the Laskarides Administration removed the Orthodox Church from its place as Pelasgia's state religion, instead transforming Pelasgia into a secular state with some limited recognition of Orthodox Christianity as the country's "preeminent national religion". Due to this change, the state will no longer pay the wages of clergy members, nor will it see them as public servants (though the federal Tax Department will continue to collect the tithe for those who indicate their membership to the Church on their annual tax return and on decennial census reports). The State will also retain some oversight over the Church through the new Ministry of Ecclesiastical Affairs (most notably including over the candidacies for Patriarchal elections), but the Church hierarchy will now otherwise be fully separate from that of the federal and polity governments.

The most notable provision in the Act, perhaps, is the abolition of all bodies and orders of the Church not dedicated to ordinary, public worship ceremonies and services, including both monastic and charitable bodies, and their nationalisation by the federal government. This includes the seizure of vast lands, as well as hospitals, orphanages, schools, businesses, and other non-liturgical properties and organisations previously built up by the Church through its centuries of domination of Pelasgian social life, particularly under the colonial regime, when it worked closely with the dominant colonial elites and land-owing classes. The Act also provides for the seizure of many movable goods attached to these properties, such as relics and icons, but also funds, valuables, precious records and historical artifacts, and a host of other items, all of which are to be placed in museums, public libraries or records, or otherwise be used for educational or other public purposes. According to the government, the buildings seized will be used for a similar secular purpose to their original function (e.g., a religious hospital will become a public one) or for a suitable charitable purpose (e.g., a former nunnery can serve as a women's shelter). To compensate the Church for these losses of property, its exemption from property taxes has been maintained under the new legal regime.

These radical measures have obviously provoked political reactions from conservative circles, especially in more conservative parts of the country, such as Philistaea, Tiverias, Metaxadon, and Makriotica, and generally in the country's east and southwest, as well as rural regions. The Church joined established rural and provincial elites in denouncing the changes brought about by the federal government, which it classified as an affront against Pelasgia's traditional values and history. Nevertheless, the new Patriarch was more moderate in his reaction than his predecessor would have been, limiting himself to verbal condemnations. Furthermore, many across Pelasgia, including a large number of religious Pelasgians, saw the reforms in a positive light, having long been displeased at the mingling of the secular and religious powers, which they saw as nefarious to both. This sentiment was particularly strong among younger, more urbanised Pelasgians and the liberally-minded bourgeoisie and middle class, who are the federal EEF's main constituents. Moreover, the urban working poor, who had long called for the state to provide them with services rather than the Church, with its limited resources, were another supporting constituency. Pelasgia's "core" regions in the north and west seem to strongly support the new measures, in spite of the peaceful protests which conservatives have organised throughout the country in the coming weeks. Philistaea remains somewhat volatile, but the governing National Liberal Union was never particularly strong there; as such, the Laskarides Administration seems confident that, overall, it will benefit from this step by the time of the 2026 election.

A wing of Propontis Central Railway Station, from where the President's train departed

His Excellency the President of the Union, Alexios Vatatzes-Tzamantouros, has reached the Central Railway Station of Hierosolyma, where he is set to remain until Sunday afternoon, as part of a national train tour to promote national unity and the incumbent government's agenda of liberal reformers. The President is set to meet with local government officials and religious leaders, in hopes of improving relations between the liberal-dominated federal government and the leadership of the deeply conservative region of Philistaea. According to a schedule released by the Presidency of the Union, His Excellency will weigh heavily on the federal government's efforts to instill a uniform national identity based on the Pelasgian language and culture throughout the country, something which has long been a demand of the heavily nationalistic Pelasgian Orthodox majority in the otherwise ethnically diverse region. The President's advisers hope that such a move will take some of the sting of the recent secularisation of the state off, particularly in light of the Church's loss of control over education, which many Orthodox Philisteans took closely to heart.

Despite protests late last week over the adoption of the federal secularism law, the President's visit has been largely without incident, apart from some heckling during the visit of the Presidential couple at a newly inaugurated orphanage, which formerly served as a nunnery. A group of men were reportedly arrested by the Federal Politarchy at Hierosolyma Central Station shortly before the President's arrival due to handling suspicious packages in the Station's cargo area without authorisation; however, the Politarchy has so far refused to comment on whether the men were in fact charged or whether they were engaged in an attempted terror attack. This is in contrast with the President's actual reception at the station, where thousands of supporters of the incumbent National Liberal Union (EEF) government of Prime Minister Ioannes Laskarides, a close ally of President Vatatzes', gathered to cheer the first elected Pelasgian head of state.

Indeed, the President's visit has so far gone as planned, with stops at various historic and religious sights, including the Church of Saint Mary on the Temple Mount and the Palace of Heraclius. His Excellency is also set to meet with the new Patriarch of Hierosolyma on Sunday, when he will attend a Divine Liturgy at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre before departing for the neighbouring Polity of Cibyrrha. Pelasgia in talks with Central Himyar regarding closer cooperation
Kalamba City, 24 June 2022 | Kyriakos Panagiotopoulos

The governments of the Pelasgian Union and the Republic of Central Himyar have met for talks regarding closer cooperation between the two nations, as part of a visit by Pelasgian Prime Minister Ioannes Laskarides to Kalamba City to meet his new Central Himyari counterpart, President Andrew Kinuani. The two men, who were joined by delegations of several ministers, have kick-started talks on a matter of topics in hopes of concluding a comprehensive agreement for cooperation. Namely, Propontis and Kalamba City are examining the possibility of a comprehensive trade agreement between the two nations, which would provide Pelasgia with a ready market for its finished goods and a source of various natural resources and agricultural products, in addition to providing Central Himyar with valuable investments potentially worth billions of euromarks. Propontis' long work in helping Central Himyar reform its judiciary and public service, which included recent missions of judicial and electoral observers, is linked to a wish to set fertile ground for such initiatives.

The two countries are also examining the possibility of a military alliance of sorts. Already, Pelasgia and its brotherly nation, Caria, are among the largest contributors in foreign aid to Central Himyar, including in military and security matters, with Pelasgo-Carian advisors having trained and equipped a significant portion of the country's military, police, and intelligence services. With Caria's withdrawal from Himyar, the burden has fallen to Propontis, which has taken the task on gladly, if only to safeguard its considerable investments in the region, which serves as a resource hub and a base for the whaling ships and resource extraction activities of the Pelasgian Far Southern Company (PFSC). Though precise details have yet to be revealed, most experts agree that the document will seek to formalise the close bonds between the two countries on the military and diplomatic front, no doubt with clauses reflecting more aid from Propontis in exchange for a greater presence in Central Himyar. Federal government unveils radical Federal Code reform plan
Propontis, 24 June 2022 | Petros Damaskenos

The incumbent federal government of Prime Minister Ioannes Laskarides has unveiled its plan to radically reform Pelasgia's civil law, with changes to almost a hundred chapters of the Federal Code of Fundamental Legislation. The Code contains the most basic Pelasgian laws in all fields, having been created in an effort to rationalise and streamline the complex heritage of Engell and Carian colonial and pre-colonial medieval and Tiburo-Pelasgian civil law which forms the general law of Pelasgia. Apart from various reforms to codify existing jurisprudence and doctrinal evolution which has taken place since the Code was first compiled in the 1950s, the government has also clearly made an effort to effect its social reforms through the revised Code.

For instance, the government has, for the first time, introduced the concept of civil marriage, something which was long resisted by the then-dominant Pelasgian Orthodox Church during Carian colonial rule (and in spite of the fact that mainland Caria had had such a measure for decades). The government has also abolished the legal concept of a dowry, and it has enacted provisions to allow women to keep their last name after marriage, and to enable illegitimate children to take their mother's last name, rather than being left without one. Other reforms, touching upon the law of inheritance and the streamlining of property law to abolish the last vestiges of feudal baggage in the law have been joined with land reform to allow rural classes a fair shot at escaping domination by large landowners and the Church.

An even more radical change is the legalisation of abortion and divorce, which was resisted by the powerful Church and conservative elites for decades. With regard to the former, the government has moved to allow it, though it only be performed up to 12th week of pregnancy for at-will abortion cases, and until the 19th week in rape cases. In any case, abortions will not be performed in public hospitals unless the mother's life is in danger, and the person seeking the abortion will have to pay for it out of pocket. This moderated approach was meant to win over certain more conservative lawmakers, as abortion remains a touchy subject in Pelasgia. With regard to divorce, the new Code adds "irretrievable breakdown of marriage" (which is designed to also include mutual agreement) to the traditional grounds for divorce (adultery, abuse, non-consummation etc.), while removing the traditional requirement of Church approval for the issuance of a divorce decree.

Following the death of President Alexios Vatatzes-Tzamantouros at the hands of an assassin, supporters of the House of Vatatzes and allies of the late President's pro-reform agenda have moved quickly to proclaim his son, Grand Despot of Pelasgia Theodoros Vatatzes, Emperor and Autocrat of the Pelasgians. This move has caused a major political realignment in the country, dissolving the three now-defunct political parties into two major factions: the supporters of the House of Vatatzes, known as the Imperials or Royalists, and the supporters of a republic, known as the Patriots or Democrats. Using their control of both houses of the legislature, the Imperials, who include former National Liberal Union leader and incumbent Prime Minister Ioannes Laskarides, have moved to reform the constitution per an agenda that matches the views of their broad coalition, in order to avoid a snap election and further instability for the nascent country.

Therefore, the Royalists have reformed the Pelasgian Union into the Pelasgian Empire, a sovereign state consisting of three separate countries: Pelasgia, the Exarchate of Tephanon, and the Far Southern Territories. Pelasgia is to carry on much as it has, as a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy consisting of 18 states (polities), with the Pelasgian Emperor serving as its head of state under the title of Basileus (King or Sovereign). Tephanon, for its part, is to be granted home rule under a parliamentary system much like that of mainland Pelasgia, with an Exarch being appointed to serve as the ceremonial representative of the Pelasgian Emperor in the territory and the de facto local head of state. Finally, the Far Southern Territories are to operate under a similar system.

In order to preserve the new state, the Imperials have also been forced to revise their position on the two controversial pieces of legislation that led radicals of the Holy League to assassinate President Alexios Vatatzes-Tzamantouros in the first place: the Secularism and Church Property Disposition Act (2022) and the proposed amendments to the Federal Code regarding various social reforms. With regard to the former, the Royalists have reached a compromise whereby secularism will be reversed and the Pelasgian Orthodox Church will return to its status as the Established Church; however, the abolition of various monastic orders and the seizure of a great part of church property (both Orthodox and Catholic) will be maintained, under what has come to be called the Settlement of Hierosolyma. With regard to the latter, the Second Laskarides Administration has dropped its reforms regarding divorce and abortion, while maintaining civil marriage and various other progressive reforms, hoping that it will, one day, be able to push on those matters. For now, it will rely on state governments to make some local progress.

With the new Emperor's coronation scheduled for tomorrow's Sunday Divine Liturgy at the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Propontis, his support within the public seems broad, at nearly 70% of voters according to a poll by PelStat. It is presumed that a referendum, which is anticipated soon, will yield similar results, especially in Tephanon and the Far South, which have been granted home rule for the first time under the new Emperor. However, the new Emperor's coalition of support seems diverse to the point of including many of his father's former opponents: religious conservatives, certain Pelasgian ethnic nationalists, regionalists, and even traditionalists have been forced to align with moderate secularists, progressives, reformers, market liberals, and technocrats in order to preserve the stability of the country and the Vatatzes Dynasty. Certainly, it will be no easy feat to keep this coalition together.

We are shocked by the news regarding President Alexios Vatatzes-Tzamantouros's assassination. Our condolences to his wife and children, to his family and friends, and to the people of Pelasgia. The Rheinian embassy and consulates, who already fly the Rheinian flag at half-mast with a black banner, will continue to do so until either the end of the mourning for King Johannes or the end of the mourning for President Vatatzes, whichever lasts longer. We offer our cooperation in finding the organisation behind the assassination.
Emperor Theodoros Vatatzes is taking over under circumstances that are difficult to him. We wish him all the strength he needs in these times, and all the wisdom he needs in his reign.
