The group of nations have been linked since 1601 when the Austwegians and Wends became linked together as a dual monarchy. The union of these Two Kingdoms promoted what has become known as the time of great power or Stormaktstiden in which the Great Northern Empire dominates Gothic Sea and North Thaumantic Ocean affairs for a period of roughly 200 years. This period of time sees tremendous dominance of the Austwegian climate and culture despite it being a minority. The fall of the Empire results in the Age of Liberty stemming from the demands of the growth of the Fennic and Wendish cultures within the old empire which yearned for greater voices in the union. The Age of Liberty eventually ends due to revanchist forces within the Dual Republic and the calamitous Second Northern War in which the Dual Republic ends and erupts in civil war. The Civil War sees the birth of modern Pohjanmaa which stemmed from the Romantic Fennic Movement, as well as Fiannian and Touzenese interference which united the western half of the former first republic under the banner of post-delegationism in 1960. It would be five years later when Nedernesia voted to remain outside of the new Commonwealth of Pohjanmaa, and Wendowskie voted to join it. Nedernesia will continue to maintain its own independence so long as the Nedernesian Royal Family exists in continuity according to the 1965 Rosengård Agreement. “For us democracy is a question of human dignity, and human dignity is a political freedom.” Pohjanmaa today is considered a post-delegationist hybrid nation. It subscribes to liberal democratic traditions within a post-delegationist ideological design. This means that there is a legislature composed of what would usually be termed citizens, which are called “inhabitants” in the Dual Republic. The President is elected to a four year term by popular vote with two terms maximum. Pohjanmaa does attempt to mimic the united aspect of the Anti-State which was seen as a model to follow. Republics within Pohjanmaa maintains their own local legislature, but President and national parliament (Eduskunta/Riksdag/Sejm) are unifying institutions. The Post-Delegationist Civil War is a foundational event for Pohjanmaa, but was not experienced the same way across the nation. The Civil war was prompted in conjunction with the Second Northern War where conflict between Østveg-Wendowskie, Sylvania, and Fiannia led to a civil war in which a Republic was proclaimed in Wendowskie in 1958 and a Post-Delegationist Republic founded in Pohjanmaa in 1960. The Union would be reaffirmed in 1965 under the threat of the Communist ideology of Leninov-Marxism. Wendowskie would not be consumed by civil war, and their transformation to a Republic occurs as a natural response to the Civil War in modern Pohjanmaa and their worry of Kadikistani interference. It would be in 1966 that the Wends would move to the Post-Delegationist Republican system as founded in Pohjanmaa after a referendum. Western Post-Delegationism maintains an approach that revolves around institutions far more than Eastern Post-Delegationism. It is far more attached to the processes of the state and does not see the era of statelessness as realistically upon us. Western Post-Delegationism is seen as a journey, not an immediate state of being. That said, if asked and presented with questions of Post-Delegationist ideology, Pohjanmaans will follow the ideological points the best it can. Religious Wars would nearly tear the union apart in the 17th century and during the Austwegian War of Succession. The two parts of the union are still religiously segregated in many ways. Wendish victory in the War of Succession would keep the monarchy strictly Tiburan Catholic; although, concessions would be made to allow for Austwegians and Fenns to maintain Lindvallan Protestant officials in government. Today there are sizable populations of each religion across Pohjanmaa. Lindvallan Protestantism and the Protestant Reformation can now be explained in our world as not as drastic an impact as in our real world due to the result of the Austwegian War of Succession. Due to the existence of the Golden Path in Wendowskie as well, religious tolerance and secularism has developed as important to the Pohjanmaan identity. “There exists no ‘they and we’ only ‘us’. Solidarity is and has to be indivisible.” Wendowskie should be seen as a mix of Pomeranian, Polish, and Baltic like culture. It’s history goes back to the Eternal Empire that will represent a Genghis Khan like impact on this nation. Being directly under the control of the Eternal Empire for what I expect to be a period of 200 years, it will see itself historically as a link between East and West and part of the reason why it finds itself receptive of Post-Delegationist thought today. Unlike RL Poland, the Golden Path religious thought has always been present since the 12th or 13th century (or so), and will be a major reason for why Lindvallan Protestantism was never removed from Hälsingia. Wendowskie gets its name from the Polish for Wends, which are the Scandinavian identification of Baltic Slavs. Its links to the Eternal Empire and Hälsingia are what have kept it away historically from the Kadikistani Union.
