“Sir, the Busto is now telling us that our assistance is urgently needed. They are saying that the crew of the Hyacinthe refuse to be picked up by them.”
The bridge cheered briefly at this news. The captain nodded, “tell them we’ll do the best we can. Get me a team on the outside of the Viipuri, they can bring people aboard on the outside of the sub. Take as many blankets as you can. The water is not as cold as it is back home, but it can sap a man if they are left wet and exposed. No one is allowed to be brought inside the Viipuri without consulting me first. Oh, and make sure the galley has coffee ready for these sailors.” It was at this point a flare went up. “Set a course for where that flare came from. I assume that’s where we’re needed.”

The Viipuri went about picking up sailors and letting them stand or sit aboard the outside of the hull. The was not really made to have a great deal of people on the outside. It was a submarine after all. Meanwhile the crew also looked at the wreckage of the Hyacinthe. She was leaking oil into the Retalian, and likely whatever she was holding was going to end up at the bottom of the sea. It would be important for the Viipuri to get away from the sinking ship as to not be pulled under. Not that it may present a large problem for the submarine, but certainly the people standing on its exterior.

There were some dead bodies in the water. The Viipuri would not take them aboard, as the Eiffelloretalian Navy seemed perfectly ok with picking them up and the Viipuri did not have the space for them.

Meanwhile on the bridge, Captain Aaltonen was going over his options aloud. “The Busto clearly does not mind our presence here. That is either because they know the Hyacinthe is going to the bottom, and whatever its treasures are will go to the bottom for them to retrieve later... or because they simply just have no idea what they are doing and individuals in the Eiffelloretalian Navy are each taking whatever measures possible to execute some degree of superiority in this sea.” XO Hakala chimed in, “There is a conference in Lars right now on the very subject. This incident if anything reduces their ability to bargain a deal that would be strictly advantageous to them. I might deduce that there is a sense of panic about this among their ranks.”

Aaltonen nodded, “typically the Eiffelloretalians are mostly just cautious about avoiding war. Which is partly why their actions today are so difficult to piece together. They’ve been very aggressive. They even knew our boat was here. That should have been impossible.”

Hakala corrected him, “nearly impossible.”

—“Yes, nothing is absolutely impossible, but if they found us the entire world has a bigger problem. The Eiffelloretalian Navy can detect nearly invisible submarines without any problem whatsoever. We were running on full silent mode. We had the sterling engine going, our plating is sonar resistant... we’re going to have to have a long talk with headquarters on ramifactions of this mission.” Captain Aaltonen paced about again with his hand affixed to his chin in pure thought.

XO Hakala nodded, “Well the at least our mission is not a total failure. In fact, the Eiffelloretalian Navy has likely killed some sailors of the Hyacinthe with the depth charges. Whoever the ramming submarine is, I would have to assume they are also sinking. Otherwise the noise from the water awkwardly smashing into their damaged hull should give them away with such an odd noise. The Eiffelloretalian Navy should be able to find them without a problem. Although I expect at the bottom.”

Aaltonen concurred, “Yes, that submarine is not a priority for us. They caused all the chaos without our help. With passengers onboard we’ll have to set a course for Serenierre. Communications, get in contact with headquarters so they can inform the appropriate people that we’re inbound. Oh, and tell the rude Eiffelloretalian Navy ship Busto that they are lovely people. We should do dinner sometime.”

—“Aye, sir” the comms stated with a slight chuckle.

“Oh, mi flor pequeña,” Minister Ferreiro whispered as the woman sat next to him on the divan, gently gliding her hand up his arm to his collar.

“You’re so stiff,” she whispered back “Mi gran toro needs to relax.”

The Foreign Minister smiled, exhaling a plume of cigarette smoke directly into the woman’s face with very little regard for how unpleasant that would be. He leaned in closer to the woman as her hand grasped his tie, just below the knot and pulled it ever so much tighter.

As the two embraced, another man sat next to the Minister – wearing even less than the woman – carrying a tray of three glasses of Auraria’s finest sangria. The Minister immediately pulled from the woman and turned to the man, grabbing the sangria.

“Ah the perfect sweet drink to go with my sweet treats,” he chimed, swirling the wine in the glass “What a wonderful night you’re all treating me to.”

“Birthdays only come once a year, gran toro,” the man teased, placing his hand on the Minister’s thigh. The Minister smiled and leaned back as his two guests put on a show.

“Art in its most pure form,” he called out.

Without so much as a knock, the door of the Minister’s quarters flew open. Three men in suits entered the room. Two of them were members of the Republican Guard – special forces of the Armed Forces specifically tasked with protecting government officials. The other man was Deputy Minister Raoul Miguel Castro. As soon as they entered, the woman and the man performing for the Foreign Minister shot up from the couch. Exposed, they covered their bodies as best they could, grabbing pillows and blankets.

“You mustn’t like gainful employment, Deputy,” the Minister barked in a uncharacteristically vicious tone.

“Uh,” the Deputy was slightly taken aback “Minister Ferreiro…it appears that a Serenien cargo ship was attacked by pirates, potentially more than one submarine, and an Eiffellander warship at the gate of the Retalian Sea.”

“Excuse you?” the Minister’s visible annoyance was heightened. His guests remained standing, frozen in place “the fuck did you just say?”

“President Sanabria is calling an emergency meeting, commanding your presence sir,” the Deputy didn’t skip a beat.

“Fuck,” Minister Ferreiro rose from the divan and redid his belt, mumbling a number of obscenities through the entire process “Well let’s go then.”

The Minister fetched his coat and walked out the door with the security detail.

If the Eiffellandian Navy thought that they would be arrested that easily, they had a second thing coming. First of all, there was not much left of four of the six people in the small boat that could be arrested, having been strafed by the machine gunner in his attempt to hit the engine.

The remaining two, wounded but alive, had no intentions to fall into the hands of men who had just moments ago attempted to kill all of them and had largely succeeded in that.

Sean, the man who had planned this entire mess, took up the bullhorn with his remaining hand, trying not to vomit as the boat precariously filled with water, turning the inside of the vehicle into a sickly red as the liquid mixed with the guts of his slain friends.

"To the Free Navy vessel. This is the Dragonfly. We have been illegally assaulted by Eiffelandian vessels with military grade weaponry. Only two of us are left alive. I know that these aren't the most glorious of circumstances, but we wish to declare our rejection of statist citizenship and request protection under the anti-statist charter."

Where did it all go wrong?

Sergeant Seagull wondered in bemusement as he was considering the imminent prospect of drifting in the waves in his yellow life vest, a red light emanating from the signal on his right shoulder, while in the middle of an active warzone. He was tough, as tough as they came in Walstadt, which is why he naturally was one of the top solo commandos in the Continental Army tasked with only the most unusual and extraordinary of missions. And extraordinary this had been, alright.

They had considered halo jumping him onto the ship in international waters, guns blazing, steering it somewhere into Himyar to extract the cargo, probably with some gold-fueled assistance by the Burukova Syndicate. It had been a daring plan, but the son of a hundred battles surely would have been able to take on a group of underpaid sailors and whore-mongers. In the end, they had decided to insert him among the crew in a less blood spilling manner, confident he would figure things from there, but it appeared as if the Eiffelandians had disagreed with that particular notion.

The Anti-Statists hadn't even known what exactly it was that made all the usual intel channels go abuzz about the Hyacinthe, all they had resolved was that the Anti-State had to have it. Whether it would be useful or not would be something they would find out later on.

Now, imminently faced with floating in the waves, he was weighting his options. The Pohjanmaa vessel was the obvious choice, but how would they know about who he was? How could he get their attention without exposing himself? On the other hand, the Eiffelandians certainly spelled trouble, particularly in light of recent intentions in Shinkyô to make them amendable to the Touzen agenda. Having a high profile Touzen commando among the wreckage would raise more questions than it would answer.

He put the thoughts aside. He had one last task to fulfill. His task. The past few days while observing the routine of the captain and his staff to take liberal peaks at the ship's manifest when nobody had been watching, Seagull had figured out that in the back of the cargo department, there had been a single holding unit that had not been accounted for in the cargo manifesto, with some boxes shoved in front of it. If anything, it was there, whatever it was he was looking for.

He didn't have much time. He began running.

"...we wish to declare our rejection of statist citizenship and request protection under the anti-statist charter." - Sean, Pirate (presumably)

“Captain, we’ve been shouted at by a man on the boat still somewhat afloat after being shot at by the Eiffelloretalians,” exclaimed an ensign on the radio who stood on the deck of the Viipuri. “He’s rejecting his statist citizenship and requests protection under the anti-statist charter.” Captain Aaltonen hung his head. “This never gets any easier does it?”

—“No, sir. It does not,” retorted XO Hakala.

Aaltonen knew that he had an obligation to save the man now. He did not want to though. According to the Commonwealth of Pohjanmaa, it had an obligation to the anti-statist charter; however, the Commonwealth would not just recognize any foreigner randomly entering and declaring. They needed to be able to speak Pohjanmaan-Finnish, as one that has made the full commitment to understanding the Founders of the Commonwealth. Being an inhabitant of the Commonwealth of Pohjanmaa required an understanding of the process to a stateless world in the simplest of terms, not merely a baseless declaration. The Anti-State was not as strict, and as such typically those who desperately wanted to make it to the Anti-State and did not want to cross through Kadikistani territory could do so by going to a Pohjanmaan port of entry and simply declare and find themselves in a Touzenese office in Haaga, ready to move to the Anti-State. As Pohjanmaa was in the thick of a statist playground, there was not as much trust in foreigners that did not come from the West Engell Republic or the Two Kingdoms, both of which were the neighbors of Pohjanmaa. All being said, the standard of living in Touzen was much better than Pohjanmaa until the late-90s, and so this was a preferred choice anyhow.

The Captain knew he needed to save that man and put him on a plane to Touzen. “Communications, let the Busto know that we have to rescue any of the people aboard that vessel they’ve disabled. Tell them we’ve come across information that the people aboard that boat are important stateless members of the Touzenese Anti-State, and we must escort them home. If they object, they can petition the Anti-State. They cannot shoot at us. We have a few civilian VIPs they’d kill..., helm, set a course for that speedboat. As fast as we can without throwing any of our VIPs from the hull.”

The bridge was silent. This was something they felt they were being taken advantage of with. Either way, they all knew they could not leave him. If news of that happen, they’d all find themselves with a court martial by the Navy. While they approached the speedboat, they waited to hear what the Eiffelloretalian Navy would say.

ETC Maritime Authority, pointed Captain Eliott Gaff to a communications station. Before the woman could pick up the handset and start dialing he interrupted her, no - no, the Republic Maritime Emergency!

This is the Trident Jush, passing you to Captain Gaff.. this is the captain, she calmly informed, quickly handing over to the hurried Gaff. RME operations.. RME operations, he repeated, bringing the handset to his ear. We are receiving you, spoke the operator from NoCRER.

This is the Trident Jush of the ETC.. our present position is [..]. This is a maritime emergency. MS Hyacinth is lost to hostile actors. We are passing their location at a distance of [...], maintaining speed of [...]. At least two units, no sighted mothership; a piracy situation. Eiffellandian Naval units appear possibly hostile to MS Hyacinth; targeted weapons on the MS Hyacinth; 'llandian vessel Busto. A Free Navy Ship the Viipuri is also present, possible hostile actor.

Copy that Jush. You should have all crew to stations and on high alert, engage fire hoses and activate lockdown procedures, spoke the operator.

I am genuinely concerned for the safety of my crew and this vessel, stressed the captain.

Your emergency is being relayed now. This is an unusual situation Captain, it will take time for the ERN to formulate an appropriate response. Please keep the RME updated should there be further events, advised the operator.

The captain returned the handset and motioned for the Chief Officer to open all channels. This is Captain Gaff of the Trident Jush, of the Engellexic Thaumantic Company. The Republic Maritime Emergency has been informed of the emergency; the Engellexian Republic Navy is expecting the safest and unhindered passage of this vessel.

Trident Jush, you have been received by the FNS Viipuri. Be advised, civilians may be overboard and recommends the maintainence of a more coastal heading away from the wreckage of the Hyacinthe. The Viipuri has civilians on deck and requests sailing a safe distance to avoid large surface waves that may cast them overboard. Safe travels.”

The MS Hyacinte, large and once majestic, with its millions of livres worth of cargo was sinking. The damage wrought by the twin strikes of the submarine and the Eiffelloretalian depth charges had weakened the structure of the vessel.

The Captain was in a lifeboat watching as the carnage proceeded and his ship continued to sink. He could see that in a few other boats some of his sailors had been injured by the Eiffelloretalian attacks, a few others dying as innocent victims caught in the crossfire.

The Second Officer Moran seemed to have broken his arm and was crying in the corner, wet and bloody. They needed help badly.

A few of the others had already been picked up by the submarine from Pohjaanma and the Captain hoped his own lifeboat would follow suit as well.

Almost as soon as the troubles were reported, an emergency patrol jet from the Serenien Navy on duty in the Retalian had been alerted and had darted off quickly to the area in question. Now, as it appeared on the horizon, the pilot flew over quickly and judged the state of the damage.

"Flight S33 at site of incident. Damage to Serenien vessel extensive. Hostile encounter seems to have occurred. Many lifeboats still visible."

The command center responded: "Noted. Stay in the area until further orders. Hold fire for now. We have picked radio signals that small civilian vessels have been attacked by military grade weaponry from the Eiffello-retalian navy. Stay warned. We have sent two more jets to support you."

"Yes, sir."

The jet circled the area.

In Ardeche, the navy had ordered an immediate deployment of Destroyer Flotilla 4 to the area. The Flotilla had been on maritime patrol further in the north of the Sea but as soon as it became clear that the incident had taken place and that a Serenien vessel was sinking, it became important to ensure that Eiffelland could not lay claim to it or the mysterious submarine which had apparently collided into the MS Hyacinthe.

This grand conspiracy against Serenierre would not be allowed to continue.

OOC: The jets are maritime patrol variants of MiG-29 and the Destroyer Flotilla has 3 guided missile destroyers from the Russian Sovremenny and Udaloy classes.

"Trident Jush, you are free to pass. Viipurni, make the moves you consider best, however, keep in mind that we were acting against an attack on the Hyacinthe by pirates. Otherwise the Eiffelloretalian Navy wouldn't have been here. The individuals claiming to reject statist citizenship are in fact pirates. We can't imagine that piracy is allowed under the philosophy of post-delegationism or under the anti-statist charter," the Busto communicated.

The crew of the helicopter flying above the Dragonfly communicated to the two people in that vessel: "This is the Eiffeloretalian Navy. You are under arrest under the suspicion of piracy in international waters. Do not resist arrestment, otherwise we will open fire. A member of our crew will be drawn down to your vessel to connect you to life lines that will pull you up to us."
One crew member pointed a machine gun at the two surviving people in the Dragonfly. Another crew member was drawn down. A second helicopter observed the situation and was ready to act in the case that the helicopter above the Dragonfly would be shot out of the air.

The appearance of Serenien fighters didn't go unnoticed. Four planes from the Eiffelloretalian Navy were sent into the air. The Serenien flottilla was allowed to pass to the scene, but watched very carefully. Four Fallwind planes (in the naval variant, blessed with 13 hardpoints) were ready to take off and destroy the flottilla when it would proceed to attack. Two additional destroyers were sent to the scene as well.

OOC: One thing. I RPed a war, and I am currently RPing a nation that apparently not everybody likes for having lost a war. I considered RPing the war a duty rather than fun. I don't like RPing a nation that everybody dislikes, either. I am not willing to RP another full-blown war or a nation considered an international pariah after this. If that becomes the end result of this RP, I will leave the forum.

As the Serenien patrol jets circled over the area, they radioed the Eiffelloretalian military assets, "Maintain distance. We are on patrol duty over the damaged vessel. Navy vessels are en-route to take over jurisdiction over the situation. I repeat, maintain distance. Confirm request."

This was a pivotal moment. It could decide how the entire saga would develop. A violent confrontation in the Retalian, leading to goodness knows what, or a calm and orderly handling of a very rough day. The Serenien pilots waited to hear the response with baited breaths.

The Eiffelloretalian Navy radioed back: "We won't block you from patrolling the damaged vessel. Our planes will maintain distance. We consider it better that our ships remain on the site until your ships arrive. What is your opinion?"

The Eiffelloretalian Navy radioed: "Our ships will withdraw to a 1 kilometer distance."

While the Viipurni approached the Dragonfly, the crew of the helicopter fulfilled the arrestment of the two surviving pirates. Immediately after that, the helicopter flew away to the closest-by Eiffelloretalian frigate.

"Captain, we have received communications from the Busto that they have captured the free people of the Anti-State."
Aaltonen found himself a little disappointed. The Eiffelloretalians had no regard for anything but themselves. This entire operation that fact has held true. They never tried to consult him, they never tried to work with anyone but were quite submissive to the Serenen communications. He would log this in his mission report, and this would impact further relations and confrontations with the Eiffelloretalians, especially at sea. He sighed, as he wouldn’t risk incident with a bunch of civilians on the top of his submarine. “Hakala, keep it on the record that the Eiffelloretalians have captured known stateless residents of the Anti-State. We’ll give this information for Touzenese to handle I’m sure. Just in case we’ll give those hardheaded Germanians a warning. Communications, let them know that there is no proof that the men they’ve seized are pirates, and that they have declared allegiance to the Anti-State of Touzen. As we are allies of the Touzenese people, we humbly request that the men they’ve captured are handed over to us as we cannot recall any crimes that they have demonstrated. Failure to do so risks a serious diplomatic incident with both the Anti-State of Touzen and the Commonwealth of Pohjanmaa.”

As communications relayed the message Hakala spoke, “sir, I believe the additional involvement of the Serenen Navy will allow us to avoid a course to Serenierre.”

Aaltonen nodded, “Thankfully that is also true. Comms, also let the Serenen Navy know we have some hitchhikers they might wish to pick up and that we’ll park ourselves about 1.5km south of the wreck of the Hyacinthe. That should set us up for immediate departure after this exchange occurs. Helm, plot a course at a very leisurely pace.”

The bridge was silent after everyone executed their orders. The first moment of calm in quite some time. Aaltonen observed his crew all at the ready and waiting his orders. “You have all done a fine job today. You have made the inhabitants of the Commonwealth proud. You have done exactly as Miss Lepistö has desired. A friendly face for post-delegationism.” He applauded them, and the members of the bridge applauded as well. “XO Hakala, you have the bridge. I am going to meet the stowaways we have top side.”

—“Aye, sir!”

Captain Aaltonen climbed up the ladder to the top side of the submarine after stopping by his office. It was narrow and when he got to the top he was saluted by one of the three Ensign above, and helped out of the hatch. “Captain on the deck!” All of the Ensign saluted. “At ease!” Everyone returned to work. Aaltonen would meet each and every person top side on the sub, gifting them all miniature flag of Pohjanmaa, and a book on the Founders of Pohjanmaa. These kinds of materials were usually for distribution in port cities, but such an occasion seemed like a good idea. A good book to go along with their hot coffee and bread.

The top of the submarine was narrow and one had to be careful not to fall off. Only about twelve men were crammed aboard, and it was not sure that they would be able to fit much more.

Water was leaking into the interior of the vessel from ruptures in the hull and broken pipes. But Sergeant Seagull was a badass, a little bit of water would not stop him. In fact, he cherished the challenge! Elegantly swimming through a flooded passage with tables and chairs floating at the ceiling, he emerged on the other side to enter into a brisk run towards the area he had been singling out as the likely hiding place of the mysterious object of his desires.

Then suddenly! From an area diverting into what used to be the crew quarters, two scuba gear clad figures emerged, one of them brandishing a speargun that was momentarily ejected towards the Walstadtian champion's direction. Wasting no time he dove behind a dinner table, the projectile penetrating the outside to halt mere centimeters in front of his face.

"Learn some table manners!"

Flipping the table over, Seagull took charge. Another spear projectile was fired in his direction, but he effortlessly grabbed it midair, swinging it around and won a game of human darts by releasing it directly into the skull of one of the men. The surviving opponent drew his knife - knife fight time. Seagull threw dishes as if they were frisbees. The frogman cut them like sushi.

Momentarily, the wall burst open in another section and a white shark found itself in the hallway. Seagull's opponent uttered a Wilhelm Scream as he was consumed by the sea beast which then was washed out the other side by a large wave.

Seagull nodded in approval.

"I guess you won't be needing this anymore", he suggested to the speared man while eyeing his diving gear. The man did not object.

"Captain, no response. We have no response from the Busto."
Aaltonen sat down, took off his hat and rubbed his head. “Why do they so directly desire to confront the Anti-State before us? Certainly they should know that dealing with the Commonwealth is far easier than dealing with the Anti-State. The Anti-State could go to war with the Eiffelloretalians... but I guess they know that the Anti-State would much rather prefer a strong Eiffelland-Retalia to combat the Kadikistanis. Those witty Eiffelloretalians. Their selfishness knows no bounds.” Hakala interjected, “I don’t believe they are thinking so literally Captain.”

Aaltonen nodded. “Perhaps you are right. These are not diplomats we speak to. Only a Navy of a nation horrified of the events of the last twelve months. There is nothing but hostility here in these waters. Our presence included.”

Again, Hakala interrupted. “We did not come here to murder. Only to cause trouble, any casualties were to be of circumstantial accident. The events of this day was the result of something on the Hyacinthe being far more valuable than we understood. The death and destruction here far worse than the Free Navy could have imagined.”

The bridge was silent.

The Captain put his hat back on. “Our job is one that is aboard a war vessel. Innocents will die. We best get used to that. Whether or not we pull the trigger, there will be death wherever we go. The result of the world wishes our Commonwealth did not exist after all.”

Over the course of the next few hours, high speed a patrol boats would come from the Serenien Navy to pick up their passengers. Eventually the Serenien Fleet nearby came, and pleasantries were exchanged. Nothing special happened beyond pleasantries.

The high stakes operation in the Retalian was over. The cards fell where they did. Serenien sailors died. Prisoners in Eiffelloretalian hands. A ship at the bottom of the water, her cargo lost.

FNS Viipuri would sail home surfaced.
