Megas Doux N. Andrianopoulos killed in action; national mourning proclaimed

The Secretary of the Military and Vice-President of the Cabinet Council, Megas Doux Nikephoros Andrianopoulos, has died after his plane was shot down by domestic terror groups over the Theme of Sebasteia. The Great Palace and the Imperial Government have both expressed their most profound condolences to the Fleet Admiral's family, as well as to the entire Pelasgian Nation, for whom the Megas Doux was a veritable national hero, both in light of the numerous conflicts he led the Pelasgian Imperial Armed Forces through, and his outstanding contribution to domestic politics. In light of these facts, a period of national mourning has been proclaimed throughout the Empire. (...)

The perpetrators of this treacherous attack are domestic terror groups affiliated with the Far Left and regional separatist organisations, who were almost certainly collaborating with foreign intelligence agencies. The Imperial Government has vowed retribution. Already, detained persons belonging to the impugned groups have been summarily executed, and large-scale retaliation operations are underway in Sebasteia, under the purview of the State Security Service (YKA). The Government noted that subversion of this kind was, in part, what motivated the Special Military Operation, showing the wisdom and insight of the Megas Doux and his policies. (...)

Following the Megas Doux's death, and until the Navy General Staff can recommend a replacement to His Imperial Majesty, the most senior living officer of the Imperial Armed Forces, General Ioannes Poulopoulos of the Pelasgian Imperial Army, has been named Acting Secretary of the Military. (...)

Special Radio Broadcast by His Imperial Majesty [Transcript]

*** BEEP BEEP BEEP ***

Announcer: We interrupt our regular programming for a special broadcast by His Imperial Majesty. Please listen attentively.

*** BEEP BEEP BEEP ***

The Emperor: Women and men of Pelasgia,

After pondering deeply the prevailing geopolitical trends and the actual condition of the Empire, We have decided to effect a settlement of the disputes underlying Pelasgia's decision to launch the Special Military Operation in Aresura and the Eastern Meridian.

Acting at the advice of Our Grand Secretary, who is currently Adm. Konstantinos Sphrantzes, following the resignation of our long-time and loyal servant, Mr. Theophrastos Phokas, We have concluded negotiations with the authorities of the Most Serene Republic of @Radilo, @The Federation of Westernesse, the Tianlong Republic (@Imimoya) and the Occidental Republic of @Josepania to bring an end of the ongoing military hostilities. Under the auspices provided most generously by the Order of @Thaumantica in Vesper, Cantignia, the representatives of the Government of Pelasgia and of Radilo and its international supporters have reached an agreement to resolve all disputes between them.

As such, We have decreed, with the consent and at the advice of Our Cabinet Council and Privy Council, the end of the Special Military Operation and the gradual termination of any special wartime measures associated therewith. Pelasgia will henceforth see restored to its rightful control Hagioi Apostoloi and the majority of the Theme of Peraica, with the exception of the Cibyrrha* Metropolitan Region, Perama** and the Isles of Hagios Georgios***. All those residing in the rest of Aresura who are true and loyal supporters of the Empire will be allowed to move to the liberated territories, while those who are not will be allowed to leave them, both with due compensation and within a year's delay. Pelasgia will restore its diplomatic ties with all members of the international community and will leave the Pressburg Pact in order to join the Meridian Union, alongside its brotherly nations in the region. Thus, Pelasgia will be safe from external aggression, while our co-nationals in Aresura will be finally freed from foreign rule. This settlement will be guaranteed by the forces of the international community against any outside threats.

*Antiochia; **Porto-di-Radilo; ***Morea

All these achievements have been secured by the sacrifice of tens of thousands of our soldiers, sailors and airmen, who fought valiantly and without fear of injury or death, as well as the hardship endured bravely by all you, women and men of Pelasgia. Those who are not unfortunately with us anymore have surely earned a place in God's Kingdom for carrying out His work with valour and bravery--for what more Christian deed is there than true service to one's country?

At the same time, and though our military's victories are beyond reproach, We have concluded that the overall military situation seemed poised to not develop in the advantage of Pelasgia, while the possibility of a broader conflict threatened the survival of mankind through the threat of the use of weapons of mass destruction. It is for this reason that, conscious of Our Constitutional and Historical Duties, We have chosen to ratify this settlement, which was concluded by representatives of both the Government, led by the Magister of the Ambassadors, and the Military, led by an Admiral of the Imperial Navy.

Much evil has occurred over the last few months, including much bloodshed and suffering. Indeed, without wishing to diminish the bravery of our troops, it can be said that some elements of the Security Apparatus have behaved in a less-than-honourable fashion, one which pains Us doubly as they were acting in Our Name and that of our Lord God. Those individuals who have so sinned will need to be held to account, first and foremost due to their demonstrated disloyalty to the values of our three-thousand-year-long civilisation and the tenets of our Faith. Moreover, the corruption to our civil government and our constitutional polity that constant militarisation have caused for decades will need to be remedied.

In the meantime, however, We invite all Pelasgians to celebrate the end of this conflict; to ponder with respect, reverence and due sorrow the death and other suffering caused by the conflict; to admire the brave sacrifice of our men in uniform; and to seize this opportunity to build a better future for all Pelasgians. For, though the route that lies ahead may be the hardest, it is also the most difficult road that is the closest one to the Heart of God.

In this time of Lent, let us glorify Him and thank Him for Peace and the chance for a new beginning, as well as the Liberation of our heretofore unredeemed compatriots.

Please now join me in singing our National Anthem.

A. Logothetis, first Socialist Grand Secretary, unveils legislative agenda

Mr. Logothetis during his inaugural address before the Boule

After being sworn in as Pelasgia's first openly socialist leader earlier this week, Mr. Alexandros Logothetis, the new Grand Secretary of the Imperial Government, delivered his inaugural speech before the Boule, Pelasgia's lower legislative house, outlining the legislative agenda of the Socialist Workers' Party (SEKP) government under his leadership. [...] Throughout the election, Mr. Logothetis run on a relatively moderate platform, based on soft secularism, social reform, workers' rights, economic modernisation, strengthening social programmes, alignment with the Meridian Union and pursuit of international peace. This paid off in last week's election, when Mr. Logothetis' SEKP received most seats in the Boule but fell short of a majority, and the centrist-liberal National Liberal Union (EEF) readily lent the new minority government support. [...] In his speech, Mr. Logothetis openly stated his commitment to abiding by the Treaty of Vesper, including preparing Pelasgia for Meridian Union membership and working with @Radilo to carry out the terms of the Treaty regarding territorial changes and population exchange. "We must not abandon our compatriots in Aresura--both those who have chosen the Redeemed Territories and those who have chosen to remain with Radilo," the Grand Secretary stated. "To love one's compatriot also means to love their democratic choice." [...]

On the domestic front, Mr. Logothetis had more substantive comments to make. For starters, the new SEKP government seeks to repeal several pieces of legislation criminalising union and organised worker activity, particularly the infamous Delictum Sui Generis Law, under which such activities are explicitly declared a special political crime, and to also grant a general amnesty to all political prisoners. Alongside this reform, the new administration seeks to reform Pelasgia's security forces and intelligence services to better align with responsible, democratic government, and to also shift the Pelasgian military's doctrine toward defence, in preparation for Meridian Union membership. [...] Long-time Imperial Police officer, Brigadier Nikon Tsakonas, has been placed at the head of the powerful Interior Department to oversee these policies. [...] Moreover, the SEKP Grand Secretary seeks to constitutionally enshrine the role of Independent Agencies, which will lie outside the control of the government, and which will regulate tax revenue, media, personal data protection, market competition and other such activities. To further ensure that power is not accumulated in an undemocratic way, the new SEKP Government plans to permanently dismantle the remaining Pelasgian corporate conglomerates (the Systimata Eterion), which had only been partially broken up to ensure their compliance with state planning by previous governments. [...] Finally, Mr. Logothetis announced daring new social reforms. On the one hand, these include new welfarist policies to raise average living standards and (in the Grand Secretary's words) "make public education and healthcare a reality, rather than a theoretical right." Notably, Mr. Logothetis referred to pharmacare, subsidised physiotherapy treatments and special bursary programmes for poor students. On the other hand, Mr. Logothetis also mentioned "continuing the work of modernising the civil law undertaken by Mr. Photiades' Christian Democratic administration." [...] Perhaps most conversation-inducing was the SEKP leader's clear allusion to the possibility of legally separating the Pelasgian Government and the Orthodox Church, while retaining the official recognition of Orthodoxy as the national religion and the privileges associated therewith in the Constitution. [...]

The centre-right official opposition, led by Mr. Chrysanthos Photiades, the last democratically elected Grand Secretary before the Militarist Coup, has proven more than willing to accommodate many of Mr. Photiades' proposed reforms, based on statements made both by Mr. Photiades and several of his close confidants within the Constitutional Democratic Movement (KSD). [...] Mr. Photiades himself battled with more radical forces to bring his Christian Democratic faction back in control of the KSD, culminating in the splitting off of the more radical Popular Orthodox Movement (LOK), a far-right party considered by many to be the parliamentary continuation of the Neo-Militarist faction, which garnered a small fraction of the vote, but enough to deprive KSD of a meaningful shot at forming a government. [...] Likewise, Mr. Papadimitrious' EEF, which has already lent the minority government support, has voiced its enthusiasm for many of the democratic reforms--and even though its market liberal base is likely not particularly enthused about strengthening workers' rights, there is a broad sense in the Pelasgian political class that this concession must be made to ensure popular buy-in in the new democratic experiment--and to fend off the rise of more radical forces, like the banned DKKP or SEKP's own openly radical socialist wing. [...]

Following end of war, Aresurans on both sides try to heal

The Aresuran War (or, as one had officially call in Pelasgia until four days ago, the "Special Military Operation in Aresura and the Eastern Meridian") has finally come to an end, following the official ratification of the Treaty of Vesper by all the interested parties. At the same time, the war-torn and deeply divided region has only begun the process of healing. [...] From a bird's eye view, the Pelasgian and Radilan borders in the area have been redrawn, and military forces have been shifted within each country's assigned zone, officially ending hostilities between the two state parties. On the ground, however, the situation is much more complex. The International Commission for the Aresuran Population Exchange, hastily set up by both parties to oversee the population transfer and property exchange following the end of the war, is racing to accomplish both tasks, while coming up with a mutually accepted final bill, within the one-year limitation period given by the Treaty. [...]

Friends, neighbours and even family members who had once lived side by side, even in spite of growing tensions, now find themselves obliged to move to one or another region based on political allegiances. Whereas prior to the War such differences could be set aside, even with great difficulty, the (often brutal) activity of irregular militias and informants on both sides has made that an impossibility today, due to a combination of bad blood and fear of reprisals. The issue is even more complex as loyalties do not cut neatly between religious and ethnic ties: while the majority of Orthodox ethnic Pelasgians in Aresura are pro-Empire, there are non-insignificant minorities of other religions (and even some small groups of non-ethnic Pelasgians) who favour the Empire. Likewise, many ethnically Pelasgia, religiously Orthodox Aresurans (particularly in the Morea Islands) are staunch supporters of the Radilan Republic. [...] As those left on the wrong side of the border in either camp have to abandon their homes and all they own that they cannot bring with them, often for replacement goods and compensation that may only be nominal, and in the middle of a region damaged by a short but extremely brutal war, it remains to be seen whether lasting peace can be achieved in Himyar's northwestern tip. Solemn procession held in Hagioi Apostoloi marks end of War

A procession through the city of Hagioi Apostoloi, the traditional heartland of pro-Empire sentiment in Aresura and the capital of the Empire's newly annexed territories, has marked the end of the war and the "liberation" of the territory for the Pelasgian side--along with a solemn commemoration of all those who perished or otherwise suffered during the conflict. [...] Led by a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary and an icon of the Holy Apostles, the city's namesake patrons, the great body of the local clergy, including the Metropolitan of Hagioi Apostoloi, led the march through Hagioi Apostoloi's central thoroughfare (formerly Viale Repubblica, currently Leophoros Basileias). Behind the clergymen followed a combination of some twenty thousand troops representing units involved in the city's capture and the overall Aresuran Campaign from the Pelasgian Imperial Army, Navy and Air Force, accompanied by family members of slain soldiers, who carried pictures of the dead. [...]

"The point of the procession is the mark the return of Hagioi Apostoloi to the Pelasgian Nation-State," said Second Lieutenant I. Chronis, one of the officers whose marched in the ceremony. "At the same time, it is also to remember the high human cost of the War, so as to avoid bloodshed in the future, and also to note that, regardless of allegiance, we are all children of the same Triadic God." [...] Notably absent from the march was any representative of Tarusa, Pelasgia's erstwhile ally in the Pressburg Pact, while the Imperial Household was also not represented, citing "the Emperor's being occupied with important political function in the Capital." Perhaps most importantly, the YKA and other intelligence agencies that played a key role in the conflict were not mentioned, likely in keeping with the official recognition of their horrendous conduct during their conflict, and also their unlawful role in bringing it about. [...] This mirrors the Emperor's recent absence from the funeral of the late Megas Doux N. Andrianopoulos, whose leadership of the pro-war faction had often caused friction between the two men. Public Broadcasting Authority | Official Statement

Propontis, 17/4/2024

Following the enactment of Law No. 515/2024 by the Koinoboule, the Pelasgian Broadcasting Corporation (PERT S.A.) has been abolished and the former Tiburan Broadcasting Authority (ART) has been restored under the name "Public Broadcasting Authority" (ARD), in order to ensure more independent and impartial operation of public broadcasting media.

Instead of being directly administered by the Government through the Chancellery, as was the case with PERT, ARD shall operate independently under a special legal framework to ensure its independence. Namely, though the entity will be 100% beneficially owned by the Government of Pelasgia, it will be legally held under an independent trust, which shall decide on the operation and leadership of ARD. Any changes or appointments to its Board of Directors will require a special majority of the Boule.

ARD shall continue all broadcasting programmes administered by PERT as shown below:
