Michael lowered his voice.

"Truth is I haven't been entirely honest to you. I'm a member of SOKI but that isn't my primary organization. In truth the main organization which I serve is the Ionian Office of Naval Intelligence. I wanted to tell you this from the beginning, but, as you imagine, the presence of a Tyrrhenian and the, strained at best relations between us and them, complicate things. Ionia and of course ONI offer you their full support. We want a democratic nation like the one you propose to replace the fascist empire in Danmark, to help improve trade and stability in the region, things that could only prove beneficial to Ionia. As you'll probably be told soon Ionia's parliament and senate have authorized a full intervention in Danmark. We have already deployed two marine regiments and a naval force while more forces will arrive within mere days. We could assist you in capturing coastal areas while our agents have already infiltrated Ravensborg and earned the trust of the local leadership. We could easily neutralize their leadership and aid an assault of yours on the city. What do you say?"

Michael extended his hand once more, smiling.

------------

The Ionian government had officially declared an intervention in Danmark. Yet this was just a needed step to bring the actual Ionian force in Danmark and justify Ionian operations there. The 32nd Ionian Regiment had been already dispatched to Danmark shortly after the start of the Danish civil war. At the same time the Ionian Marine Corps had also been dispatched to Danmark with the help of an Ionian Naval force. They remained in international waters with few Ionian ONI and DYK troops setting foot in Danmark. Up until today... after the intervention was approved the Ionian Force landed in Samso. The local garrison was practically non-existent as almost all troops had been drawn from the southern, coastal areas of Danmark to fight the revolution in Aalborg. The local residents had been subject to Danish oppression just like most Germans and were eager to see a foreign intervention. The Ionians didn't declare full control over the city but rather landed and garrisoned some 2,000 men in Samso. The rest of the Ionian force remained aboard the ships but closed in on Samso to be able to support the Ionian garrison if needed. At the same time the Ionian air-force begun dropping humanitarian aid in various areas of Danmark.

--------

An Ionian jeep with three Ionian DYK commandos and an Ionian delegate was moving near the Danish border with Eiffleand. Their mission? To negotiate a cooperation with the Eiffelanders. Once they got close to close to an Eiffelander food convoy the approached the trooper who seemed to be in command;
"Hello there. We're here to meet the Eiffelander commanding officer. Please tell him that an Ionian delegation is here to see him with an.. enticing offer."

There was also the matter of Asylan, who had sent in a team of special-operatives and travelled all across the country in order to meet him. Asylan’s interests were very unclear, but the guess from Franz, Chrysanthos and other advisors was that they meant to keep an eye on Franz and, like Eiffelland, make sure that he did not stray too far into the Revolutionary Defense Treaty Organization, considering Asylan was part of the Tripartite Agreement, and there was a major crisis developing in ex-Danish Eastern Cape, an issue that even Franz did not want to touch.

That being said, they made no secret of their intentions to talk, so their entrance into City Hall was accepted, though most of the team was kept in the main hall, a close eye kept on them just in case, for these were troubled times. Only their leader, one Major Savon, was admitted to Franz’s office, and outside the door his weapons were removed by the bodyguards before he was sent in.

As he stepped in, Franz stood and smiled, “Welcome, Major. I’m glad to see you’ve finally arrived. Welcome to the Commonwealth.” Leaning over the desk, he shook the Major’s hand, and gestured for him to sit in the chair opposite of him, before sitting himself and continuing, “You have come at an interesting time, being able to see a state built before your very eyes. What can I do for you, sir?”

Major Savon nodded and took the seat offered to him. It was good to finally be at his destination. And of course, not being shot at.

"Sir, I'm glad I'm here to. To see the state in which your country is... well I'll be honest it saddens me. We spent quite awhile driving here and I must say your country is beautiful. I only hope you can keep it that way. I'll be straight up honest with you Mr. Franz, I'm no diplomatic, and it wasn't until we were halfway here on the boat that we learned we needed to make contact. So I'll be straight forward with you, you seem to be a good man, and good men desire the truth. Me and my men are here to observe and begin friendly relations with you. If you will have us we can assist you in training your men and give council if need be in war. We don't have a complicated assignment, but in short we want to help you. We can't give you much, we brought some AK47s and small supplies in our trucks, but we hope our presence is more of a show of good faith. We only hope that your goals can be accomplished without spilling the blood of innocents. If this can be done, we hope Asylan and The Commonwealth can be great friends in the future."

Operation Hexengebräu
Vesper, Cantignia
25 March, 1954

"The Empire of Wiese, the Empire of Engellex" Covenant Commander Zedock Berkynge belched out before a round table of politicians and officers, "the Duchy of Vistrasia, the Duchy of Bourgogne" he continued to a series of groans, "the Kingdom of Etnaea, the Kingdom of Transabina" Berkynge said, pointing to each nation on a giant map at the center of their steel table. "Barring the Principality of Tiburtina, which of our Monarchist neighbors am I forgetting?" the Commander asked, already tapping his pointer over Danmark. "We have the unique opportunity of melting down yet another crown in our lifetime, nay, the chance to destroy the most despicable and dishonorable of all: the Dansk Empire".

Berkynge backed away from the table, for without chairs the power brokers jockeyed with one another to get the best view of Imperial Danmark. "Our allies and our enemies each wish for us to do the same thing: support the Commonwealth revolt," the Commander suggested with a dismissive tone, "To our allies this means a new extension of RDTO power from Tyrrhenia to Cantignia, and to our enemies it confirms their fears of exactly that . . Mark my words: if Danmark falls to Communism or Post-Delegationism with the aid of our hand, we will fall to the Empires of Engellex and Etnaea soon thereafter."

"Why risk our hand at all if intervention means loss of the whole body?" the Commissioner for Agriculture aptly inquired, "We cannot fight a war in Danmark, Berkynge, we can't fight a war at all for that matter" a General from the Aeroforce stated as a matter of fact with his arms crossed.

"Note the universal aim of all involved in this conflict, even uninvolved: the effective destruction of the Dansk Empire eternal" Commander Berkynge replied, "They want it, we want it, and damn it we're going to make sure the world never hears from a Dansk Monarch ever again!" Berkynge shouted, then waving auxiliary staff in to hand out manila folders containing Operation Hexengebräu. "Cantigian Intelligence has identified Mezhism as the most regionally neutral solution to pacifying the region and effectively exterminating the Dansk Royal scheme".

In the first few pages of the file the presumed positions of Etnaea and Engellex, the big two of Cantignia's chief defense concerns, were described in relation to the eventual revelation of Cantigian intervention and a prediction of low impact, or non-violent repercussions from the big two if a Mezhist agenda was pursued. Operation Hexengebräu next identified the Mezhists and individual leaders themselves deemed susceptible to Anti-Monarchist, Anti-Dane activities currently or after the support of Cantigian assets. "You'll read next that we can of course expect a naturally angry response from our allies in Carentania, who place Mezhism high on the echelon of its enemies, and Tyrhennia who is officially operating on behalf of the Eastern Commonwealth.

Raising his hand to draw attention, Foreign Affairs Commissioner Talbot nodded and quickly confirmed that his office "had no significant disagreements with these assessments". Deeper in the operation files, a classified copy of Aldenhov's President authorizing police assistance in the semi-independent exclave of Cantignia if the Dansk Revolution, which had already ruined the local economy, was further exasperated by extra-germanic intervention. "As far as the public knows Aldenhov is still deliberating our offer for police assistance in the region, but as you can now see - we are within legal bounds to begin peacekeeping operations in Aldenhov immediately".

"Tomorrow morning Cantigian National Police will enter Aldenhov in response to the public release of Aldenhov's request this evening," Berkynge declared with his pointer resting on the exclave, "Mobilized in response to the Bourgogne debacle, Cantignia's First Division of the Army will disembark from the West on a journey East that should end on Saturday or Sunday morning in Aldenhov."

"On Monday morning the Grand Covenant shall announce a total crackdown in Aldenhov and far east Cantignia, martial law until all foreign operators from Asylan to Ionia are arrested or expelled," Commander Berkynge said, "Between now and then our own agents will begin reaching out to the previously described domestic Mezhist operators who seek the creation of a Germanic post-Dansk state".

Franz nodded in response to Major Savon. "I agree, Major. My country is a beautiful one. Despite the poison that is Danmark having infested it for centuries upon centuries, oppressing the people with their culture, their monarchy, and now with their Mezhism, the land itself still thrives, despite it all. The people remain independent and dedicated to their true identities, as seen in the recent uprisings in the rest of Estland, in Kurland, and in some of Livland."

He briefly looked away to a map on his right, hanging on the wall displaying the Commonwealth in its, unfortunately, limited glory. Later tonight he would take a closer look at it with Chrysanthos and plot out military strategies in order to maintain the initiative against the Mezhist Danish government in Christiansborg. For now, though, it was a reminder that his fight was not over, and that he needed all the help he could get, national or international, leftist or rightist, so long as he got it and they kept their word, he would accept them.

"@Asylan will be remembered, Major, as a friend of the Commonwealth, no matter how small its gesture. The guns and supplies will be put to use as best as possible, and your advice will always be noted and taken under very serious consideration by me, considering you are rather more experienced than I. I will admit, I am still young, perhaps a little too young for this, so I will need all the help I can get." Franz looked back to Savon, "Understand this, though. Although I hate the Danes for what they did to me, how they almost killed me, how they almost killed our culture, I do desire their surrender far more than their death. Crimes must be paid for with justice, but justice will not always mean death, and not all Danes are guilty of crimes."

Franz then stood, hands behind his back, "My view, however, will not necessarily be shared amongst the revolutionaries. These are people driven by desperation, for the government in Christiansborg has promised our complete and total destruction as punishment for our disloyalty to their rule. We must fight, or we will die, some of us in horrible ways. I know for a fact that I will never be taken alive by them, because I will wish for death by the time they would be through with me. Desperate men and women, therefore, will react in extreme ways to threats such as the Danes, and although I have forbidden the so-called 'Dane Hunts', I know they still occur. What happened here in Reval, in this City Hall, was one of them. I could not stop it, Major, because in the end I am simply one man. I can only place my trust in others with more direct power than me to enforce my will, such is the flaw of immense indirect power. Perhaps your presence will be able to mitigate some of the worse excesses in vengeful hatred, as God as my witness I do hope so."

By this point, Franz looked very tired, and sorrowful, "But this is the release of centuries of hatred, Major. I pray you will forgive me for not doing enough, and the people of the Commonwealth for what they have done and may yet do."

Michael's revelation shocked Franz in numerous ways, and it showed as the Ionian explained himself. It was difficult to believe he could be both a trusted part of the government, and a member of a resistance group dedicated to its dismantling, though the life of a double-agent wasn't impossible. This meant the man was very good at masking his intentions, and thus made him very dangerous. He had, nonetheless, taken a risk by telling Franz of his dual allegiance, and he could only imagine Chrysanthos' reaction to such news. The Tyrrhenian would probably be calling for the man's blood, or at minimum his departure from the Commonwealth never to return. It was an option that certainly occurred to Franz.

But Michael's further revelations as to the actions of his government made Franz reconsider his response. They were already on their way to Kurland, two regiments and a naval task force with reinforcements, and their infiltration in Ravensborg in Livland further complicated matters. Franz very swiftly realized that he could not eject this man from the Commonwealth, not without throwing away the opportunity to more quickly stabilize and reinforce rebel control in Kurland, as well as make a planned link-up of east and west closer to reality... if anything, to refuse his help would make him and Ionia an enemy, and that was the last thing Franz or the Commonwealth needed.

Like it or not, he needed Michael, and he needed Ionia.

It was with a heavy heart, for this news of Ionian intervention was going to be difficult to explain to Chrysanthos, but a smile on his face that he took Michael's hand and shook it firmly, "I say we have come to a very clear understanding. If you can get me in touch with your government, so that I may provide my assurances as to my democratic intentions, I can assist in coordinating their military and humanitarian efforts with ours, and crush the Mezhists in Christiansborg once and for all."

Desperate times were indeed upon the government in Christiansborg. Although they had limited Commonwealth gains in central Danmark to the rural areas and small towns, keeping their disorganized and uncoordinated and slowly, yet surely, picking off the weak groups one by one, the developments to the west and especially to the east were far more disturbing. Although in western Danmark the government had retained some control, their efforts to contain the eastern rebellion to the east had weakened the west, leaving holes open in their defenses. So when Aalborg had fallen and the general uprising occurred, the Commonwealth-aligned rebels and a few independent groups had severely weakened the grip Christiansborg had in the west.

But now Ionia was invading, and they had made their intentions of supporting the Commonwealth, no matter how limited, very clear.

The Danish Navy, despite its many setbacks in recent years, was still a formidable power, one that could potentially challenge the Ionian strike force heading for the coast. That being said, it had experienced those setbacks thanks to the incompetence of the Royalists and Mezhists alike, and while the revolution was happening on land, the navy was experiencing the rumbles of mutiny. Nonetheless, the government of Christiansborg was ordering the ships out to sea in order to oppose the Ionian invasion by any means necessary. It was questionable that the navy would listen, considering how the army and air force were behaving so far, but the number of options were rapidly decreasing for the Danes, and they needed to try anything they could to prolong their existence. At the same time, a two-front counter-offensive was being planned in order to regain the initiative from the rebels and repel the invasions of both Ionia and Tyrrhenia. They still had a chance for such a counter-offensive due to the limited intervention thus far, and if they could stop it here, all the better. Long-term, things were bleak, but Christiansborg could not afford to focus on that. It needed to stay with the here and now if it wanted any chance at survival.

As for Eiffelland? Although they had not declared their intent to support the Commonwealth, it seemed that it was only a matter of time, especially considering their lack of respect for Danish territorial integrity, no matter the de facto situation on the ground. The offensive to the east, therefore, would consider Eiffellander forces hostile on top of the rebels and the Tyrrhenians. The plan, albeit a desperate one, was to scare the Eiffellanders back into neutrality, for they were already heavily committed to the morass of chaos and suffering that was Solaren. If it became clear that Danmark would become one with their involvement as well, they may withdraw and provide one fewer force for the Danes to fight.

Whether they would stay that way or not was unclear, but Danmark couldn't afford to be rational anymore. They had to accept that they were losing, and they needed to start winning.

Or else all would be lost.

Southern Danmark, border region

Danke fürs Essen. Jetzt bitte die Lastwagen.Thank you for the food. Now the trucks please.
The lieutenant in charge of the small convoy looked into the barrel of a gun. His convoy couldn’t drive further because of a roadblock. In fact his convoy had been surrounded by men who were more armed than themselves. The lieutenant, a 21 year old conscript, realised that he had no choice. So he and his men surrendered. They were immediately released and told to run to the border. And they had to leave their trucks behind.

This happened several times in the border region of Southern Danmark. The ambushed soldiers all thought that they been assaulted by some strange rebel forces. The reports of their officers all suggested that the revolution in Danmark was about to get out of hand. But they were all wrong about the identities of the people that had assaulted them.

In fact those people were Eiffellandian professional soldiers, piece by piece with combat experience in Solaren, piece by piece from Northern Eiffelland, and therefore piece by piece fluent in German and Danish. They had infiltrated into the country with the order to present themselves as Danish rebels, not as Eiffellandian soldiers. They needed trucks to move within Danmark, but they could not have crossed the border with trucks; that would be too obvious. So they “stole” the trucks from the food convoys. All in all, two batallions (1100 men) had crossed the border this way, all pretending to be Danish rebels. Their mission: Support the revolution and prevent that the Danish powder keg would explode. More men were prepared to come. However, the 100,000 men that others expected the Eiffellandians to send in would not be deployed on a short term. They were only made ready for the case that Christiansborg would loose its head.

But the Eiffellandian air force was more than ready to make sure that no Danish bomber would get off the ground.

Office of Franz Kammerschen

“Thank you for your hospitality, Mr. Kammerschen,” Lutz Nielsen said. “I’m awfully sorry, but I don’t know your official title at the moment, otherwise I would have used it. My compliments for your achievements so far.” He looked around in the office.

Nielsen was about 1.90 meters tall, which was due to his Danish roots. His greatgrandfather was a Dane who had moved to Northern Eiffelland to marry there. His hair was brown, his eyes were green, and he was quite musculous. He was an agent from the Eiffellandian secret service, the Staatsschutz.

“My name is Nielsen. Indeed, a Danish name. My greatgrandfather was a Dane, but I am an Eifellandian,” he said. “As soon as the revolution started, I was sent here on behalf of my government to inquire about your intentions. As you know, Eiffelland is a centrist democracy. Long before a revolution could even take form, the Eiffellandian workers and elites negotiated a deal. The deal was the social market economy. But I am not here to tell you that you should go for a social market economy. We don’t know what the future capital of the Commonwealth will be, but it won’t be Trier. As long as you install a constitutional state in the Commonwealth with equal rights and duties for everyone together with a democratic system, and don’t go for a complete communist system, we are satisfied. We offer you support for the Commonwealth.

Another food convoy in Danmark

The 20 year old lieutenant Christoph von Weizenburg, also a conscript, looked at the Ionians. Grown up in Trier, his Greek wasn’t very good, so he was glad that the Ionian delegate spoke German. He greeted the delegate, and said: “I am Lieutenant von Weizenburg, the commanding officer of this convoy. We don’t have a base in Danmark, but we can take you with us to Eiffelland.”

"No need for apologies, Mr. Nielsen. Things are rather chaotic around here as you have no doubt observed, and so fancy titles are not high on the list of priorities at this time." Franz replied, a warm smile on his face as he took in the appearance of the Eiffellandian, who despite his intimidating appearance seemed to give off a warm, inviting aura, something that calmed his nerves somewhat and allowed him to be slightly more jovial. "They are beginning to call me Overseer of the Revolution, but right now, Mr. will do just fine."

As he listened to Agent Nielsen's explanation, his fears were further eased. He was aware of Eiffelland's moderate government and society in general, so reassurances that they wished to hear of his intentions for the Commonwealth gave him hope for their support. Unlike Chrysanthos, he was not willing to stick only with Tyrrhenian support internationally for the revolution... his revolution. He was not as devoted to post-delegationism as Chrysanthos, nor to communism. Although both offered wonderful ideas, he wished only to use parts of them and other more moderate ideologies, something he intended to tell the Eiffellandian.

"Mr. Nielsen, your government need not worry about my own intentions. I am a moderate man, and although I admire post-delegationism and communism and what they strive for, I do not intend to fully implement all their theories at once upon the people of the Commonwealth. For one, they are not ready. To transition so rapidly from one extreme to the other will cause corruption and chaos, something I cannot allow. For another, I have some disagreements as to the practicality of some tenets of the ideologies, at least at this present time in this present society. So although they will in part be used, much of what I aim to do will come from socialism, from libertarianism, and from simple democratic republicanism. A coalition of leftist ideologies, as it were, in order to give the people of the Commonwealth a society they can be safe, happy and secure in, as well as proud to live in."

Franz paused, then continued, "Specifically, in regards to the government, we are aiming to set up a constitutional demarchic system, one that revolves around the random selection of volunteers for various candidacies of the government, and being kept accountable by the people they represent through constant referendums on the view of their performance in truly representing their wishes in the halls of government. It is, I feel, a practical compromise between the freedoms of direct democracy and the practicality of representative democracy, eliminating much of the possible corruption in both, and bringing a sense of partnership for all citizens. Economically, I hope to set up collectives of businesses in order to eliminate corruption and unprofitability, creating a stronger partnership between employer and employee, and providing employment to all willing and able to work. I also intend for a strong welfare state that will keep the people healthy, educated, and happy, leading to prosperity for the collective as well as the individual. In terms of society, I hope to give the people trust again, not just in their government, but in their fellow man and woman, and eliminate the need for war with each other and with those abroad, save for those who would wish to do us harm. Peace is what I want; inner, nationally and internationally for the Commonwealth."

At this Franz smiled, "Peace, prosperity, partnership. These are the three tenets we shall strive for in our moderate Democratic People's Republic that draws the best and leaves out the worst of post-delegationism and libertarianism, of socialism and communism, and of democratic republicanism itself. So tell me, Mr. Nielsen, do you feel such a state fits the criteria for a friendly nation to Eiffelland?"

"Like you said, Mr. Franz. You are but one man. I can't expect you to be the sole controller of an unprofessional army. This isn't like using an army like Asylan's. It's a time of upheaval and strife. Some people will always take advantage of it. But I promise you if you rule with compassion instead of fear, and keep a tempered hand instead of striking in rage, they will love you for it. Those people will look to you and only you. Not some lieutenant you have, or one of the foreigners and god forbid me. It will be you and your actions will change everything. If you need tactical advice me and my men are at your disposal. If you need a trustworthy team to take care of a mission and keep alive as many people as you can, you can trust us. One of the men with me was a Dane we enlisted to help us smuggle into the country, I'm sure he will be more than willing to help with his contacts."

Savon extended his hand,"Do not worry, this can be done. And when we are done, we can be proud."

Major Savon's words gave Franz heart, a source of strength he had only just now realized he needed. For even this early into the revolution, he was exhausted, yet he was doing a full day of work, dealing with issues he never had to before, that he only had a comparatively limited understanding of, with the fear of being killed at any moment by anyone, Danish, German or foreigner. He wanted to sleep, just stop everything he was doing and sleep until everything would go away and he could go back to his comparatively lazy studies, working to become some desk jockey for a big shot politician. He could get a decent paycheck and acceptable benefits, find someone and get married, have a kid or two, be normal and average.

But he couldn't, not anymore. His desire to live propelled him to new heights he could never come down from without falling to his doom. And he wanted to keep doing this, to not give up but keep striding forward towards whatever awaited him, to the best of his abilities. Besides, he had allies, people who would be there for him and give counsel when needed, provide protection, and projection of power. Chrysanthos was his first, and would always be such, but people like Major Savon could not be forgotten, but instead kept close, so that Franz's ideals could be realized.

So when he saw the man from Asylan extend his hand, Franz eagerly took it in his and gave a firm, enthusiastic shake. "Thank you, Major. I will need your services very, very soon. But they can wait until later. For now, you and your men get some sleep, for I imagine you had a rough time getting here, and you're going to be very busy starting tomorrow."

"Sure thing" replied Michael, happy that he could strike a deal and finally help defeat the Mezhist government. He himself had learned of the intervention merely minutes before via radio but he was sure this, along with their recognition of the Commonwealth, meant they were supporting Franz's cause. As such he was confident now that the Ionian government would actively respond to Franz's call for help. Michael handed him a docuemnt. "This is the frequency that we use for High Secrecy communication with the revolutionaries in the Commonwealth. We created it just recently." Michael pointed to a number written on it; "Of course you'll need a more direct communication than that. The Ionian Consulate here in Aalborg would be a great place for that and I'm sure they'll be expecting you. After you gain control of Ravensborg that consulate will also be a good location while the one in Samsø is the best one for this purpose due to our active presence in the city. Of course since sending an envoy there is hard for now the frequency I gave is for that. Also this is the Ionian Consul in Samsø's phone." Michael pointed to another number on the document; "He directly coordinates the government efforts with ONI. There is also a list of Ionians or locals that you could talk to to communicate with us. Though once again the best option in the local consulate. Try to meet with the council when you can, I'm sure he'll be expecting you."

Samsø, Western-Coastal Danmark
The Ionian troops had landed in Samsø a couple of days ago. They local mayor had let them stay in a local warehouse in the port. The locals were friendly as they considered a foreign force a form of protection from both loyalist and rebel forces alike. However they weren't all too friendly with the strangers, as anybody would probably be if a regiment of foreign troops landed in their city. They had however provided some beds and food to help the Ionians that were staying in the warehouse as getting supplies post secretly was hard. After the intervention was declared however the Ionians moved a naval force aboard whose several ships several more marines were waiting. Resupply and support was much easier and as such the Ionian force, with the cooperation of the local police and residents was able to lightly fortify the city and patrol its perimeter to protect it from he assault of guerrillas or government troops. Of course the Ionians didn't do that out of the good of their hearts, not entirely at least. For now the city was not occupied but if serious intervention or military action was needed the Ionians would have to land their force in the city and use it as a stronghold before expanding their zone of control. All of that was, for now, just hypothetical talk as life continued almost normally in Samsø.

Ravensborg
The Ionian troops had finished barricading and fortifying the city and had begun fortifying the surrounding zone of control. However they had also begun placing explosives in Danish defensive positions, command centers, the Danish military base and even the very fences they were setting up. When Franz's lot came the Danish defenders would blow up like fireworks living the city undefended. However the Ionians would do everything they could to protect civilians, surrendered troops and generally everyone else so the win't be "mass suicided" by the Tyrrhenians again.
On to the captain the Duke seemed to believe his story and take nicely to his support. After gaining the trust n support of the locals they were effectively in control of the city as the inexperienced mayor and duke did everything they were told with some bullshit excuse alongside it. The captain and his men, 260 more of which had arrived in the morning, were secretly laughing. They couldn't think of the look on the Duke's face when the city's entire deface would be blown to pieces and he would be handed to a very, very angry mob of rebels.

The Eiffellander Convoy
The Ionian Diplomat was more than happy to hear the Eiffellander officer's offer. Happily he replied;
"Of course. That would be much safer and much more productive than discussing such an offer here."

He then turned to the troops escorting him, two men and one woman all of which were from the Ionian State of Thrace;

“Your ideas surely fit with our ideas of a friendly nation to Eiffelland, Mr. Kammerschen,” Nielsen said. “I am glad that you tell this to me. I think that the plans you have can work out fine. Just before the fall of the monarchy in this country, there were plans for a Danish-Eiffellandian economic zone around the border between Eiffelland and present-day Estland. Those plans were never carried out, but from our side they can be reactivated as soon as the war is over. A mutual defence pact may also be possible. For now, I can offer you support in terms of food and weapons, and if needed also aerial support from our air force. I can tell you that, as soon as Christiansborg decides to send bombers to Eastern Danmark, our air force will intervene.”

Operation Hexengebräu
Aldenhov, Republic of Aldenhov (Semi-Independent state bordered with Danmark)
27 March, 1954

Crawling around his desk and chair like his office was a forsaken battlefield, President Alfred Vogel held up a mirror over his head to see out the window of his second story office. As his own ears suggested, weary eyes confirmed the presence of unruly throngs of protesters outside throwing bricks and using slingshots to fire in to his already broken window. The evening before, from this very office, President Vogel had conducted a scripted radio address that authorized military police intervention to a sparse and undefinable series of protests in Aldenhov.

"Where are the foreign instigators?" the President asked of a Cantigian Military Officer, oblivious to the rampant foreign agent conspiracy theory his Covenant counterparts demanded he believe in. "Sometimes you need to shake the tree, smoke them out, turn up the heat . . " the Cantigian Officer had suggested, "Whichever figure of speech works for you, we're going to find the provacateurs - because we know they're there, and if you intend to survive the coming storm - you'll know where they are".

It was this type of mass manipulation from Vesper that drove Aldenhov, and Vogel as its first President, to break at least partially from the Cantigian Kingdom in its death throes, and remain as separate from the New Covenant as much as humanly possible. The human element had failed however; Radicalism in Danmark was rearing a great fear of being boxed in between a socialist Cantignia and a commonwealth Danmark, and it was the Mezhists: true radicals themselves who were rising here to ravish the moderate slice of Europe Aldenhov had managed to carve out.

Silence begun winning out in the time Vogel had spent reflecting on the situation, in his mirror he could see that the many throngs were dissipating in to small squads of protesters holding bats and wearing improvised armor. "RETURN TO YOUR HOMES," a loud speaker recording played in echos of Cantigian and Wieser language, "PRESIDENT VOGEL HAS DECLARED MARTIAL LAW," the recording continued as the President himself stood up partially to peer outside. In full riot gear a marching line of Cantigian National Police was overtaking the street like an expanding pool of black sludge, bubbling and popping from time to time to lash out at resisting rabbles. Night would fall soon, and with the instinct of suffering through city lock downs like this before he immediately found a flashlight buried deep in his desk cabinets after two years of disuse.

It was the Cantigian policy to cut off power to citizens during an uprising, effectively disabling street lights and all electricity besides hospital and police buildings - often built next to one another with this doctrine in mind. As the hour passed Vogel noted how, as he had expected, the street lights failed to turn on at the regular time, the lights in his office disabled and the phones defunct. Without knocking a Police Chief eventually let himself in, offering his hand to shake to which Vogel merely sneered and sat down in his dark office. "Nice to meet you Mister President, my name is Colonel Threll; my brigade is charged with securing the city's major sites". Gas generated flood lights then burst on outside, revealing empty streets besides trash and improvised weapons left behind by protesters.

"We need you to select at least four Senators to be charged with high treason and espionage against the Aldenhov Republic," C0lonel Threll ordered, "We've identified 10 Senators with questionable heritage or significant investments overseas". President Vogel switched on his flashlight to view the list laid out before him, visualizing all ten of them in his mind as the dear friends and colleagues that they were. Most of these men had helped him become President to begin with, they were a tight knit cadre that held dinner parties and galas together. "Time is of the essence Mister President," Threll whispered as he slid a red ink pen across the table, "The names you select will be caught fleeing the country this evening, mostly, others will be caught trying to wire assets out of the Republic or burning evidence of their espionage".

President Vogel suddenly felt terminally ill, something vile and disgusting rising up in his stomach until chunks of his small breakfast he was forced to eat by a secretary tumbled out on to the hit-list. "Sorry?" Vogel asked as he wiped his mouth, "Not at all, sir, we brought copies" the Colonel assured glibly. After a few long minutes of deliberation, Vogel had his traitors' four, at the end of which the Colonel arbitrarily picked a fifth with his eyes closed. An evening of midnight raids followed, capturing the five Senators and several Dansk refugees with ties to the old Empire. An imperfect operation, blood was shed when Dansk refugees resisted and in some cases escaped in to the darkness of the old port city. By dawn some 23 police officers were hospitalized and 5 were confirmed dead, an irony which Vogel alone took sincere pleasure in as he was released from house arrest.

Franz took the document from Michael and studied it as the Ionian explained its contents. It was rather thorough, and through these phone numbers and addresses was expected to answer a fair few questions Franz and, no doubt, the Provisional Government of the Commonwealth had for the Ionian Confederacy. Specifically in regards to issues of coordinating any incoming military forces and humanitarian packages with Commonwealth efforts on both fronts. The interests of Ionia, after all, did not necessarily match those of the Commonwealth's, especially considering their incursions before informing the revolutionaries or at least recognizing their legitimacy, and considering their efforts were unlikely to be the work of volunteers... Franz would have to tread very cautiously indeed.

"Thank you Michael. This will come in handy, indeed." Placing the paper on his desk, he gestured towards the door, "Now go, get some rest. Surely you and your men are tired, and will need to recover their strength. I may have need of you and your men tomorrow, for the Danish Empire has not yet fallen to the will of the people, and we may need all the help we can get."

"I'm glad to hear it, Mr. Nielsen. I imagine we will need that air support sooner rather than later, for I am hearing rumbling from Christiansborg, plans of an upcoming counter-attack. I hope to strike at them before they get the chance to regain the initiative, keep them backpedaling and stumbling, for such will make it all the easier for them to fall." Franz replied, relief evident in his voice.

Indeed, the promise of support from Eiffelland in the realm of their air force was heartening indeed, just as much as Tyrrhenian support via a brigade of motorized infantry. For the military of the Commonwealth was still a fairly confused mess, what with the sporadic mutinies and desertions from the Danish armed forces. He was lucky, so far, that Estland was mostly for the Commonwealth, there were only individual pockets of resistance in the rural areas, small towns and smaller military garrisons that refused to turn coat and remained loyal to Christiansborg. The opposite was of course true in Livland due to its proximity to Christiansborg, and Kurland? Kurland was simply a mess.

"I will contact you tomorrow, Mr. Nielsen, in order to get in more direct contact with your government and coordinate a possible strike on Danish forces that will allow the Commonwealth to disrupt their efforts to counter-attack and keep them on the defensive, perhaps also beginning a link with Kurland to the west and a breaking of their hold on Livland. Combined with Tyrrhenian efforts, we may be able to bring this war to a swifter conclusion than I feared. For now, please, allow me to spread the good news on a partnership of Eiffelland with the Commonwealth, and preparations for more official dialogue between our two states in this noble struggle."

Chrysanthos was, of course, informed of all that developed with Major Savon of Asylan, Agent Nielsen of Eiffelland, and most especially Michael of Ionia, as Franz had promised his partner from Tyrrhenia. For after all, these were major developments for the Commonwealth, and before Franz was expected to go to the Provisional Government of the Commonwealth with these news, he wanted the Tyrrhenian's advice, as he still had a few questions. One of the most important ones was what to do about Michael. The man himself seemed sincere in his desire to assist Franz and the Commonwealth in their struggle, but the actions of his government were far more suspect. Their involvement in Ravensborg and their planned involvement in Kurland before the rebel government was even recognized was disturbing to Franz, and hinted at deeper, darker motives.

He knew at least in part what Chrysanthos would say: that he could not and should not trust Michael or the Ionians. That he should expel them from the Commonwealth either through declaration or through military force. But Franz had two problems with such a response. First, he wanted Ionian support, no matter how tenuous. It proved to him that his cause was just, and not merely an ideological struggle but indeed a truly noble revolution that could draw its support from almost all political spectrums. It more easily proved to him and others that it was a struggle between good and evil, rather than a confused flailing about that had severe flaws. Second was the practical aspect. He couldn't simply expel Michael or his men, not without drawing their ire, and considering their abilities that was the last thing he needed breathing down his neck. Furthermore, to demand the withdrawal of any and all Ionian intervention seemed preposterous in its ability to actually work, and what was to stop them, then, of switching their support to Christiansborg?

The idea of giving any power to the Mezhists at all was ridiculous in Franz's eyes, no matter his distrust of his allies. It was far better to keep them on his side until their true intentions came out, true intentions that, he hoped, were more like his own than against them. He would certainly, after all need them just long enough to take Ravensborg and deal further blows to Christiansborg, break their iron grip on Livland and their desperate scrabbling for a hold on Kurland.

It was with all of this in mind that he informed Chrysanthos of the events yesterday with Eiffelland, Asylan and Ionia, and braced himself for the storm that was to follow...

I don’t give a shit about what the Eiffellanders and the Asylan men are planning to do. Even if our friends from Carentania are in bad relations with Eiffelland, we can cooperate with them; the multitude of joint investment companies shows that. Asylan is too far away to have any power to project over here, as Cantignia covers the northern border and Carentania the eastern one, so as long as Asylan doesn’t want to circumnavigate the globe to reach Danmark, I can’t care less. My great problem was the Ionians. I was already angry when I had to leave Franz with that worm, but when Franz told me that he was actually from the secret services, I believe my eyes even started to tear of how angry I was, but I immediately turned around, so that Franz wouldn’t see me like that. After a few moments in which I managed to calm myself, I turned again to face him to listen to the rest of the story.

When he first told me that he was a member of ONI, I was ready to scream to him: “And why is he still alive? Why didn’t you shoot him?” but then I stopped, right before saying anything, as I thought that such a shout would already make him believe that I think only of the Tyrrhenian-Ionian dispute, without seeing the whole picture, and such a thing would have been bad as actually Franz is the one that oversimplifies this and doesn’t see the bigger picture.

Antipater Lekkas entered in the last days with a brigade of the Revolutionary Insurrectionary Army in Estland, ready to support the Commonwealth. I am sure that with the other two forming brigades we can start a lightning offensive that will end in Christiansborg, with or without the Ionian scum, so in the end, victory is inevitable.

The problem with Franz is that he is too much of an idealist. He still has that idyllic picture in his mind in which the whole people unites together to fight against the oppressors. True, such a thing can be real, but it will last for a very short time. If you don’t check continuously those so called allies, you will end to hold together the flag of victory against the fascists, but in the next day, you will start killing each other. I want Franz to understand that those so called centrists and democratic right-wingers are just using his fame, his reputation, his charisma, his naivety and his idealism, just to pass through those rough times and end up in the victorious side. They simple jumped from the sinking boat to our boat. I want him to understand that after he wins, he may even be killed by those men, because they can easily say that he was corrupted by communism some sort of rhetoric monstrosity like that, or they can break apart this national front and start a civil war.

In the end, I decided to tell Franz what I believe about the Ionians but I tried to model my arguments after his mentality, to make sure that he understands, and will take note, hell, even follow my advice:

“Franz, look at Danmark, the old Imperium ruled by the fascists from Christiansborg. DO you like it? Do you like the way the Germans were seen in that state? Well, let me tell you that the Ionians are the same as the Danes. They are populists, fascists… they have second class citizens, they don’t accept immigrants because they fear of what they call a dilution of the cultural value. Do you want your Commonwealth to end up like how Danmark was? Also, that man told you, with his own mouth, that he was a member of ONI and that he was undercover in the SOKI guerrillas. Imagine again the day in which you were nearly killed in Rumperup. How it would have been when someone that you have trusted in Rumperup would have killed you behind your back because he was a Mezhist agent? The Ionian people had tried to form a revolution like the one you are leading for many years. A month before your revolution started, they were betrayed; by men like the one you met and talked with. The leaders were arrested, as they were popular and known to everyone, but the majority of simple citizens that hoped for a good life and were ready to fight for it, like you did, were killed! That man represents those butchers. Can you imagine what nerve does he have now to come and say that he supports you after he killed his national brothers… he killed people like you and if he wouldn’t like the way your revolution is going, he will kill you also. So, he must disappear. If you want everything that you worked and fought for be destroyed in a matter of seconds, you can ally and befriend him, if now, he must disappear!”

At the end I observed the sharp tone in which I spoke to him… I didn’t like it, but it had to be done. I felt exhausted after the last days…

Operation Hexengebräu
Aldenhov, Republic of Aldenhov
30 March, 1954

"Kres Villumsen . . Danmark . . accused and convicted of social, cultural, and financial manipulation of the Gallo-Germanic Peoples & Patriots . . Jannic Borstin . . Danmark . . accused and convicted of social, cultural, and financial manipulation of the Gallo-Germanic Peoples & Patriots," the President of Aldenhov said, accompanied from all sides by Cantigian National Police, "Randolf Winkler . . Eiffelland . . accused and convicted of espionage against the Republic. . Otto Lohmann . . Eiffelland . . accused and convicted of espionage against the Republic . . "

A silent gathering of citizens gathered and pushed in to the streets for the occassion, the denizens of Aldenhov cringed as cracks and pops from a far distance away were heard by all. Steady exchanges of gunfire had dominated the last three evenings as every reported lead of Dansk and Eiffellander espionage incurred the wrath of local and extra-national police. Inspired by the force of blood and iron, the nosy neighbor nastiness of Vesper and the outlying boroughs were sinking in like acid cast upon skin of Aldenhov.

Behind each handcuff carrying police officer a bible boasting deacon waited, ready to reward those who turned in their neighbors for sin with the promise of everlasting love from Christ and his patrons. The Fighting First Division of Cantignia's Army arrived late Saturday afternoon, exacerbating the situation further - stories of violence and even rape threatening to disrupt the symphony of propaganda. With four State Senators dragged out in front of the people for vague crimes, a violent minority of Aldenhov's population was seeing through the crimson veil of a new Cantignia.

Aldenhov was but a rallying point for the Fighting First Army Division however, after embarking from the border with Bourgogne earlier in the week they had trekked the country in up armored autrovers. Breakdowns of the Cantigian made product delayed the operation along the way, and while the Division was scheduled to cross the border on Monday evening - repairs of equipment could take three or four days beyond the planned operation. General Lawrence Hearnes broke bread with the leading CO's and NCO's on Sunday evening, expressing a grim disappointment from Vesper on their operational inability.

"The Rover is the finest automobile in the world, gentleman" General Hearnes growled, "It's your men, not the machines; I have orders from the Covenant Council to discard faulty assets wherever . . and whoever, if you get my drift . . I see fit". The leadership cadre remained silent, many of them filling their mouths with bread or drink to excuse their delay in speech. "I fail to see how any of this is sustainable, sir" an NCO from the second brigade piped up, "The Hov's will wear us down, and that's just before the breach of Danmark . ." he continued before being interrupted by the General, "Someone fix this man's attitude, it is disturbingly defective". Within the hour the NCO was strung up beside the Danes and Eiffellanders, charged and convicted of traitorous espionage against the Peoples & Patriots of Aldenhov.

Across the border in divided Danmark a less obvious show of Cantigian force lurked, agents of the Covenant lurking to identify agents of Eiffelland and other nations. Light rumors of Eiffelland and Asylan intervening in short had spread naturally, but the Cantigians intended to snowball these rumors in to a full fledged scare. "DANES SELL NATION TO SAVE SELVES" a propaganda pamphlet's headline read, "A GERMAN COUNTRY THROUGH AND THROUGH", stated another. An emphasis in each pamphlet was put on identifying the German majority within Danmark as the rightful leaders of the nation, kept down by the Dansk minority and supported by a clear foreign conspiracy against the German Peoples & Patriots.

"The German Peoples & Patriots in this land have already died," Herbert Goerne shouted down to a small mass of the already converted, "We are all D.E.A.D.; occupied the Dansk Eiffellander Assassins of Democracy" he shouted yet louder, causing a rabble of boo's and jeers. "True patriots cannot be murdered and raped, and we will rise again over the Dansk Dictators and the the Eiffellander who impregnates our fair lands with the seeds of inaction, economic control, and even spy agents!"

"DEAD! DEAD! DEAD!" Goerne called out with a shake of his fist, drawing a chanting response from the mass: "DEAD! DEAD! DEAD!", "DANSK - EIFFELLANDER - ASSASSINS OF DEMOCRACY!" he then called out, "DEAD! DEAD! DEAD!" they responded, dividing out in to smaller groups to harass the denizens of Fredrikshavn. Such were the vanguard of Cantignia's Fighting First Division, who on the border of Danmark and Aldenhov staged for a a roving spear thrust directly for that city, and thus the Jylland region.

Many Mezhists had been tapped by Cantigian agents, though many if not most demanded a true commitment from the Covenant, and better yet, a guarantee that the commitment was not tied to an immediate Communist conspiracy against their region. The verbage of the propganda, Peoples & Patriots, quickly turned in to Patriots - the Christian Cantigian themes spinning in to a fascitoid mix of the Dane, the Eiff, and even the Cantigians that dared to manipulate them in the same way. In the view of the Grand Covenant, the future enemies propped up by their meddling had less present threat than the possibility of a stabilized Danish State, or even a stabilized Commonwealth.

Dansk Empire had reigned with impunity against all other than Engellex, subjugating peoples from every ocean and pushing out Cantigian interests in every category. Destruction of the Dansk State was no delicate matter, and while by some grace it had imploded on its own accord - an Eiffellander capitalist conspiracy might prop up another Dansk State. If a radical Communist or Post-Delegationist government fully succeeded in inhereting the Dansk Empire, Etnaea and Engellex would seek to choke out the widespread of radicalism from Tyrrhenia to Cantignia. And while Cantigians believed in the Revolution, they were not willing to go marching in to the second destruction of their entire way of life in a single decade.

"After meetings with foreign agents came the Constitutional Convention, an event that lasted for days with nothing but debate to varying degrees of intensity. We first had to settle who would even take part in the debate. It was Rumperup all over again, but this time on a truly overwhelming scale. Everybody had an opinion, and a voice loud enough to proclaim it. Organization of speeches and discussions was near impossible, but the experience taught us much. It taught us first and foremost that in the Commonwealth representatives were absolutely necessary, no matter what the more radical post-delegationists, libertarians and anarchists had to say about it, because otherwise it was impossible to get anything done. By the 28th we had finally come to an agreement to have a makeshift, last-minute assembly of endorsed representatives that would be able to vaguely represent the wishes of most involved, so that we could actually get a reasonable debate going, which we eventually did.

Inspirations for what our government would be like, as would our economy, came from the Free State of Tyrrhenia, the Constitutional State of Touzen, the Worker's Republic of Carentania, and the People's Republic of Vangala, four successful revolutionary states with differing ideologies. Radical post-delegationism had by this point left a sour taste in our mouths, no matter how much we admired the ideal end goals. In fact, radical communism and radical ideologies in general were shied away from. The one thing we would never accept was mob rule, be it under the blue flag. the red flag or the black flag. In the end, Tyrrhenia provided the most inspiration for how our government would function, much to the delight of Chrysanthos and Antipater Lekkas. Of course, in the end, all we came up with was a vague 'Official Draft Constitution', it would be finalized once Christiansborg finally fell and the Danish Mezhists were defeated. In the meantime, we decided that the representatives would continue discussing and debating, refining the draft and crafting something workable for the long run... but I wouldn't be a part of it.

Instead, I would take part in the military campaign, which had been planned while I was busy creating the beginnings of a constitution. Our intel knew that the Danes in Christiansborg were preparing for a two-front offensive into Kurland and Estland, at the same time crushing the last pockets of resistance in Livland. The Commonwealth had, however, secured the help of Chrysanthos and Lekkas in the sending of more Tyrrhenian forces into Estland to support the offensive, namely three divisions. It was definitely a step up from the initial brigade that was promised by the Free State of Tyrrhenia, but desperate times called for desperate measures. This, combined with approaching Agent Nielsen and requesting the support of the air force and army of Eiffelland, made us confident enough to take such a bold step. Eiffelland would be slow to respond, but once they did, our victory could be assured.

Bold steps, I think, were needed at this stage. There was increased unrest in Kurland from Mezhists, and not the governmental version either. They were Germanian, but they refused to side with the Commonwealth, apparently perceiving us as puppets of Eiffelland... a strange choice considering our primary backers were Tyrrhenia, but it didn't matter. The point was that the revolutionaries in Kurland needed support as soon as was able, or else their gains would be reversed and our campaign that much harder. Our future was further put in jeopardy with the recent Sikandaran call for Danish emigration to Sikandara, making note that they would be looking for the best and brightest of our country. In other words, they were aiming to give us a brain drain. Already we were expecting to lose at least a thousand of the most skilled minds and bodies our country had to the predatory aims of the Sikandara, as well as at least five thousand other Danes, and there was little we could do about it. It was frustrating, infuriating, and we were convinced Sikandara was going to bleed us dry in as many ways as possible.

That all didn't matter at the time, though, at least to me. For I was planning on taking a direct part in the campaign. I refused to remain a bureaucrat in this revolution, and aimed to experience the same thing our soldiers experienced, at least to a certain degree. Protests were ignored, even from Chrysanthos and Major Savon. I told them if they were so worried, they'd come with me to make sure I stayed safe, but I wanted to fight for my land's independence from oppression, and I would not force others to do it while I sat back in comfort. My stubbornness eventually paid off, but there were many arguments before the two of them finally conceded.

The offensive would begin the following day... our intel suggesting a full day before the Danes would begin theirs. We hoped that the surprise would catch the Mezhists thoroughly off-guard, and provide us with momentum that would carry us all the way to Christiansborg."

5/4/1954

"Our bold military move paid off beyond our wildest dreams, both in its results and its execution. From Wessenburg, capital of the Wessenburg District, previously known as Aaben-Unden-Marken of the Danish Jelling District, the Tyrrhenian 3rd Revolutionary Insurrectionary Army of three divisions under the command of Stratigos Leonidas Paraskevopoulos advanced westward towards the southern mountain pass in the Danish Kroneprovins District, towards Kastrup, making more than their fair share of noise and chaos along the way. The Tyrrhenians were supported by the Commonwealth 1st and 2nd Revolutionary Armies, leading to around 200,000 men making a lot of noise. Danish military forces, already demoralized by the confusing civil war and brutal counter-measures enacted by Christiansborg against their own people, were unprepared for the pre-emptive strike, let alone one spearheaded by professional forces under the Tyrrhenian flag. A declaration of war from Christiansborg towards Tyrrhenia soon followed, and intel from our comrades in Kurland indicated that the Western Offensive planned by the Danes was swiftly cancelled, reinforcements being poured southeast to stop the Tyrrhenian advance. Word also came that the Danes would commit the loyalist air force to the defense, which played right into our hands, for it would provide Eiffelland the casus belli it needed to commit its own air force to the cause, as promised by Agent Nielsen. Combined with thousands of Eiffellandian soldiers planned to completely neutralize organized Danish resistance in Estland, it seemed like the death knell for Christiansborg.

What it was, for certain at the time anyway, was the easing of pressure in the west that gave the Kurlanders time to reorganize and continue their strikes against Danish forces, further weakening their hold in the west. The rise of homegrown Germanic Mezhists grew ever more troubling, however, combined with reports of Cantignian intervention in the semi-independent Republic of Aldenhov, spurred officially by the civil war occurring in our lands. Although the Cantignians were logically our allies in this conflict, for they had no love for the old Danish Empire and its Mezhist successor state, their silence and withholding of official support for our cause was ominous, though how much so we could not determine at the time.

This major offensive led by the Tyrrhenians, however, was ultimately a diversion, and a risky one. The ultimate objective was a last minute addition by me, and it may never have gotten approved if it weren't for the support of Chrysanthos and, surprisingly, Taxiarch Antipater Lekkas. They both praised its boldness and its potential to end the civil war decisively and quickly. The Commonwealth 3rd Revolutionary Army, including the Tyrrhenian 5th Motorized Infantry Brigade under Lekkas, would quietly advance out of Weissenstein of the Weissenstein District, previously known as Felling of the Amager District, and through the much smaller but, theoretically, more lightly defended northern mountain pass, keeping to the river and the lake and making as little noise as possible. The primary objective would be Skanderborg in the Kongenbjerg Dristrict, and from there, Christiansborg itself. While 80,000 men wasn't as impressive as 200,000, it was hoped to be just enough.

I wished to end the civil war as quickly as possible, for the longer this affair dragged on the worse off our land and our people would be in the aftermath. Furthermore, I was hearing reports of trouble in Danish Implaria and Danish leased territory in Sixia, Fenghuang. Both were royalist strongholds, tolerated by the Mezhists in Christiansborg because of their inability to do much of anything about it with all the trouble at home. The Commonwealth Provisional Government was attempting to negotiate an understanding with the royalists, but our anti-Danish Empire rhetoric was souring their opinion of us, and negotiations were stalling. Remembering the days of the loss of the Faroes Islands, I wanted to move things along and put the Commonwealth in as strong a position as possible, otherwise, there would be further foreign intervention that would result in the loss of valuable territory...

But one of the biggest reasons I wished to end things quickly was the knowledge that, despite my proclamations forbidding such actions and my personal intervention whenever they occurred in my presence, Dane Hunts and Mezhist Hunts were continuing, at a pace that Major Savon of Asylan and I were unable to effectively stop, though we tried as hard as we could to limit the damage. For these actions were contributing to the increasing number of Danes leaving the country, headed for Sikandara, taking with them brilliant physicists, engineers, philosophers and the like, likely also taking vital documents of state secrets with them. We couldn't stop this brain drain, no matter how hard we tried. The worst part was that I suspected who was organizing the Mezhist Hunts, which potentially led to general Dane Hunts, which ultimately contributed to this drain.

Chrysanthos... although I did not confront him about it at the time, I had strong reason to suspect he was behind it all... at minimum the Mezhist Hunts. How he did it I was never certain, though I suspected his other volunteers distributed throughout Estland and in the two offensives were his eyes and ears. I had no proof, of course, but his hatred of Mezhists was well known, and he never truly hid his dissatisfaction with my lenient attitude towards the Mezhists and the Danes, an attitude Major Savon cultivated and nurtured, which of course led to an ever growing rift between two of my closest advisors. The arguments between them, in my presence and out of it, grew more heated and volatile by the day, and I was beginning to fear that eventually things would become violent. I did the best I could to keep the two separated for as long as possible, but it wasn't working...

I was growing tired, and less idealistic, for every day that this war dragged on. I wanted it to end. I needed it to end, and quickly. That's why I proposed my bold, almost foolhardy plan, why I placed myself as close to the front lines as I could get away with. Because this war had to end before it spiraled further out of control... and as we closed in on Skanderborg, the Danes not yet realizing their doom was already upon them..."

Major Savon had enough. He knew somebody was behind the attacks, and that there weren't many people that were in a position to stop these hunts. But he knew the impact of whoever had been organizing the hunts was doing, they were in essence decapitating the abilities of a new state from the Commonwealth. He knew that many nations still feared the outcome of this war, what the Commonwealth could become, maybe some sort of monster. But Savon had faith he and his fellow soldiers could stop this before it a new "evil empire" could be built. Savon was willing to bet that whoever this was, was doing everything secretly in their power in order to ensure that Danmark would never return, no matter horrifying the results. He didn't have a list of potential foreign powers that could be behind this, but he had a few ideas. For now his suspicions had to be put to the side.

That's why Savon had been thinking of a new plan of action. A pipeline in which to evacuate Danish refugees before the death squads could reach them, preferably to Asylan, where they would be safe from death squads. He had set a meeting with Franz alone and was on his way. He walked through the forward camp that their division had built. The front lines weren't all that far away, and while Savon had mainly remained with Franz to help with administration, something he never thought he would be doing on this mission, he had gone out with both his men and Franz to complete a few behind lines missions. He arrived at Franz's makeshift headquarters and walked in, finding Franz examining a map laid out on the large table in the center.

"Franz, I'm glad I found you here. There is something we need to discuss about the Danes here. You and me both know we have a serious problem. The hunts won't stop, and us simply asking won't be the solution anymore."

Franz looked up from the map and crossed his arms, "Your suggestion Major?"

"I believe I can setup with my intelligence contacts I've been building through the region a safe pipeline to evacuate Danish refugees. They need to be separated from this conflict, and they need to go somewhere safe. I suggest we smuggle who we can through to the port at Samso. My latest communique with the man in charge over there, Erik Vogel, suggests he has aligned himself with the Commonwealth cause, I can't say the same for the cities of Mellersted or Roskilde. They are either contested or controlled by somebody we can't trust. The only issue at this point is how to actually get them there. The battle lines seemed to be drawn and smuggling them seems to be nearly impossible. My suggestion is something we should have thought about earlier, and that is connecting the two sides of rebelling territory. I suggest taking territory south to establish a contiguous line for exhange of supplies, and with Eifellland's air support I think we can do it. The south is much more lightly defended than the north. However until this connection is established I suggest we setup a refugee camp for Danes in Haasensten, a town west of Aaben-Unden-Marken... or sorry Wessenburg. It's relativley safe and if we have a set of trustworthy men to guard them we can safeguard displaced Danes until I can get them out."

Somewhere in the area of the Ethnic Danes

Mensch, Vollidioten, seid ihr Holzköpfe noch zu retten?“ Lieutenant Christoph von Weizenburg screamed at a group of Danish Germanics whom his platoon had captured after having caught them napping on a Dane hunt. You bloody idiots, are you fools out of your minds?

Christoph’s platoon was returning from a food delivery when his men discovered that a village was under attack. Christoph immediately ordered a counteroffensive against the group assaulting the village, and managed to stop the assault, at the cost of the death of one of his men. Several assaulters had also been killed, several others wounded, and some of Christoph’s men were wounded as well. And Christoph was furious. His men already knew that Christoph could be quite foulmouthed when he was angry (with that, he was not the standard Eiffellandian nobleman), but they had never seen him as angry as he was now. Christoph cursed for five minutes and used the informal “du” instead of the formal “Sie” against the assaulters.

Gottverdammte Scheisse, we are helping you out with getting rid of the Mezhist government in Christiansborg, and the only thing you’re doing is sowing the seeds of the next civil war, you bunch of cretins,” Christoph screamed. Then he ordered to arrest them all. He got ropes from the ethnic Danes he had just saved, and had the assaulters tied up and thrown into the trunks of his trucks.

“Shoot without warning if they make one wrong move,” he ordered. “We take them with us and will hand them over to the Armed Forces of the Commonwealth.”

Air force bases in Northern Eiffelland

The Mysterium planes were the first ones produced by Dassau and its predecessors who got a real name instead of a number. The backbone of the Eiffellandian Air Force, the J29 (“Jäger 29” (fighter planes are called “Jäger” in German)) was the last plane which had got a number. That plane would play an important role in the Danish civil war, together with the Mysterium I as fighter-bomber, the B32 as tactical bomber and the Mysterium II as fast interceptor plane. The Eiffellandian Air Force was ready for deployment above the Commonwealth. It would act upon request from the Armed Forces of the Commonwealth. And of course it patrolled the air, so that no Danish plane would be able to enter Eiffelland.

Land Army bases in Northern Eiffelland

About 5,000 professional soldiers had been sent into the Commonwealth, although not officially recognisable as Eiffellandian soldiers. About 5,000 more could be deployed soon when necessary. More would not be deployed, however, although more had been sent to Northern Eiffelland. They had been sent there to block a possible Danish attack. Howitsers were placed in the border region in such a way that they could not reach the soil of the Commonwealth. Tanks and tank destroyers were present, just to be prepared.

The Danish came to Eiffelland, but it was not an invasion. It were refugees. Also that had been taken into account. A refugee camp had already been prepared, complete with tents, food, beverages and a field hospital.

Eiffellandians knew themselves very well. As soon as something unexpected would occur, they would start to panic. So they thought out each and every possible scenario and planned for it.

Kammerschen’s headquarters

Also Nielsen tried to contact Kammerschen about the Dane hunts. Like Lieutenant Christoph von Weizenburg, he thought that the Dane hunters were doing nothing but sowing the seeds of the next civil war. The Dane hunts had to stop as soon as possible, otherwise the Commonwealth could never become a stable state.

And also he had heard about some funny events in Northwestern Danmark, where it seemed that people were setting up a Germanic Mezhist movement. Nice for the Volksunion, Eiffelland’s own nationalist and Mezhist political party, which had been crucial for the Eiffellandian involvement in former Danmark, but which was also largely distrusted by Nielsen, for obvious reasons. Which democracy would trust a political party that wants to end democracy?

The troubles in Danmark has kept the Sixian government weary. If the uprising in Danmark succeeds, it would place Fenghuang's fate in jeopardy for the Danish. While normally the Sixian government would normally allow leases to be upheld by succeeding states if they so wish to continue, the radical left nature of the uprising is troublesome. The Hongmenghui and Vangalan presence in Yujin is not helping, with the socialist states all seemingly in unity on spreading their beloved ideology across the world through force of strength, threatening existing societies that do not wish to partake in their new order. For now, they wait. There are no concrete plans on what to do in the event the Commonwealth replaces the old Danish Empire, they will observe with distant eyes and keep a close watch on Fenghuang.
