Prime Minister announces birth of 4th child

Polsu, Satakunta - Today Prime Minister Jaakko Ruotsalainen and his wife, Maritta, announced the birth of their 4th child, a son named Niilo. The Prime Minister, who is 37, and his wife, who is 34, announced the pregnancy 4 months ago after lots of media speculation. The couple have 3 other children, the eldest of which is 12.

The Prime Minister's office announced that the Prime Minister would take a few days away from his duty to bond with his new son but would then get right back into the duties of the Premiership. The leader of the opposition, Aadolf Peura, congratulated the Prime Minister and his wife on the birth of a healthy child and said he looked forward to seeing him again in Parliament once he returns from his few days with his son.

Whilst the Prime Minister is away from his duties the Internal Affairs Minister, Torsti Ruoho, will be in charge of the cabinet.

Government considering easing restrictions on abortion

Polsu, Satakunta - The Government has today announced that they are looking into ways to ease restrictions of abortions after there was national outrage due to a woman who died whilst trying to get rid of her baby. Johanna Roivas, 21, was found dead after she jumped down her stairs to try and force herself to have a miscarriage but she ended up landing on her head and dying from bleeding of the brain.

Some members of the ruling National Centre Party have expressed dismay at the chance of abortion being fully legalized and have accused the government of forgetting the principals of their party. However, the Prime Minister seems determined to get the law passed to prevent any further deaths. He also said that "the same people who look down on single mothers are the ones who do not want to allow women to prevent this from happening. They can not expect women to give up their lives to raise a child, the times have changed."

The Governments proposal to fully legalize abortion seems to have the support of the public with 71% of voters polled saying they are in favour of a full liberalization of abortion laws.

Marked: Open

To His Excellency the Prime Minister of Satakunta, Mr. Jaakko Ruotsalainen;
From Gerhard Schenk Graf von Schlabrendorff, His Majesty's Minister of Foreign Affairs:

Greetings!

Dear Sir,

It is with regret that I must open communications with you on such a tragic topic as abortion. As you no doubt know, my master King Friedrich Maria and all his people view children as a precious treasure. Need I say such things to you, four times a father, and the fourth just recently come into the world? It was with great sadness that His Majesty learned of certain proposals being studied by your government for the liberalization of abortion in your country after the death of the young woman, a tragic event that has agitated your citizens. I beg of you to do all you can to show your people that death is not the way. We can work together and with the larger international community to care for all our children at all the stages of life. I trust I can count on you.

Most cordially yours,
Gerhard Schlabrendorff, etc.

Dear Mr. Schlabrendorff,

I am going to be quite frank with you and tell you that I am in fact rather disgusted by the fact that your nation feels it has the right to stick it's nose into my nations internal affairs. There is such a thing as sovereignty and I believe your nation needs to learn to accept my nation's most important right as a sovereign country, the right to make it's own laws. I too am regretful that our communications have begun in this way as I believe it will only set a sour tone for any future relations between our countries. I would like to request that your nation does not do such a thing to my country again. Thank you.

Signed,
Jaakko Ruotsalainen
Prime Minister of Satakunta

Respect for the natural rights of all persons is a cornerstone of the law of peoples. A government that permits grave violations to human rights undermines its own sovereignty. The Kingdom of Gunnland reiterates the concerns of our friends in the Kingdom of Elben.

Let's all see things in proportion. First of all, it seems evident that it was not Minister Schenk Graf von Schlabrendorff's intention to impose the retraction of the abortion bill upon the Government of Satakunta, but rather to give an advice. It goes too far to consider an advice a violation of the sovereignty of a nation. Even condemnations of situations in other countries is part of normal diplomacy.

Regarding abortions, we have to face the fact that abortions have been conducted in whichever way for centuries. The reason is mainly because, indeed, unmarried women who got pregnant often had to deal with rejection by society. In many countries, that is still the case. As long as this situation persists, women will want abortions, legal or not. If there is no access to an abortion procedure that does not harm the women's health, women will look for alternative ways to perform abortions, sometimes resulting in damage to the woman's body, or even death. The only way to stop this, is:
  • Provide support to unmarried women with children so that they don't need to organise themselves into a burnout and give up their own lives.
  • Remove the stigma on being an unmarried mother, so that those women do not have to deal with rejection by society any more.
  • Grant easy access to contraceptives, and provide contraceptive pills to women for free.
  • Give sex education to adolescents, maybe even already to young teenagers.
  • Legalise abortion so that it is available as a last resort when contraception has failed; the wish for abortions will be greatly reduced anyway if the four bullet points mentioned above are implemented.

Thousands march in Polsu in favour of abortion

Polsu, Satakunta - Today an estimated 60,000 men and women took to the streets of the capital city in favour of the governments proposal to fully legalize abortion. The crowd was filled with the faces of people from all different backgrounds, in particular young women, who wanted abortion to be fully legalized throughout Satakunta.

Amongst the marchers were the leader of the opposition Aadolf Peura. When the SK spoke to him he said "Normally I'd be out here marching against the government but the issue of abortion is something that we share common ground on". Another marcher we spoke to was a young mother, 22 year old Milla Haataja, who said that "I became pregnant at 17 and I had no way out of it so I had to keep my baby. Of course in the end I loved my child very much, so much so that I had 1 more and I plan to have a 3rd in the future, but not all women who need abortions have families who were as supportive as mine and they also don't have fathers who stick by their side like my now husband did."

Despite the big turnout for the pro-choice march there was also around 3,000 to 5,000 anti-abortion protesters on the streets in Polsu. One of them we spoke to, 57 year old Tuula Pakarinen, said that "I am fine with contraceptives but when we get to the point where we are taking away the chance for a child to live through the wonder of life I draw the line. I have 3 beautiful grandchildren and whenever I see them it always makes me think about the grandparents having the chance of having beautiful grandchildren ripped away from them. It just disgusts me to be quite honest."

The Lutheran Evangelical Church of Satakunta has also spoke out against the legalization of abortion saying that "the greatest gift god can give to someone is their life and to rip this away from unborn babies would be unchristian and morally wrong."

An opinion poll by the SK showed that 42% of Satakuntans are in favour of full legalization of abortion, no matter the circumstance. The poll also showed that 74% of the public are in favour of legalization in certain situations such as rape and incest, abortions for these reasons are already legal in Satakunta.
