GOVERNMENT DECISION TO BE A WINDY AFFAIR?

Since the early '90s coal-based energy has been abandoned in favour of cleaner alternatives. However, almost thirty years later Salia is somewhat lacking behind in green energy. Several government coalitions have throughout the years claimed technologies and alternatives to be either underdeveloped or not financially rewarding (read lucrative). As a result much of our energy, such as natural gas and nuclear energy, is being imported. Import implies costs, while investments for future energy production are getting postponed.​

The presence of the Green-Liberals in both national and sub-national governments seems to finally change all that. Christian Democrat leader Alfred Hijns - claiming his party took the initiative - is drafting new legislation with Green-Liberal Thomas de Kooster, loosening regulation and providing subsidies to aid the renewable energy sector.​

Salia has already up to seven wind turbine parks in the Gothic Sea, ranging in between 200 and 300 MW. Politicians, citizens and experts believe hydroelectricity and future investments in wind turbines and solar energy could drastically increase a surplus of renewable energy and lower costs in the long term due to diminishing energy imports.​

AVENDGEM AWARDED CULTURAL CAPITAL 2019

The rural city of Avendgem, located in the Upper Salian region in the State of Leenster, may proudly call itself the cultural capital of Salia for one full year. Having opened the new Natural-Historical Museum, renewed its Tourist Information Centre and restored an adjacent Archeological Park (integrating paintings and ceramics); Avendgem defeated the towns of Eeldert and Hennebrug. The latter also located in Leenster.

Local restaurant owners claim they already witness the increased influx of local and foreign tourists in Avendgem. City Council expects revenue to go up with 20% for the coming legislature, considering its recent investments worthwhile.

USS COAST GUARD OPENS FIRE: TWO SANK

This morning two boats, both belonging to an international drug network, were spotted in territorial waters and ultimately intercepted. Initially considered to be two foreign ships in trouble, were quickly identified as dangerous vessels after not complying with the necessary security and emergency procedures. The encounter resulted in a dangerous escape attempt.

The SSSCG Michael deployed its helicoptre, the latter opening fire on the ships' engines from above. All 11 crew members originating from Kadikistan and the Northern Cooperatives' Union were captured, one being heavily wounded. About 400 kgs of cocaine were confiscated, as were about 12 light assault rifles. Since both vessels were heavily damaged due to the gunfire, the SSS Coast Guard decided to set them to ablaze by explosion and let the ships sink.

New Appointment to the Order of the Swan Announced / 9th July 2019

The Sovereign of the States, Henrick-Jan Brand, has been pleased to appoint Anthony Gunn MacPherson to be an Officer of the Most Noble Order of the Swan, and Peter Keith Quincannon to be a Member of the Most Noble Order of the Swan. Both Gunnish officials have long been intimately involved with the Council of the North membership negotiations, in so far that these diplomats have come to defend Salian interests on the international stage.

The appointment of the Companions of the Swan is in the Sovereign's gift, without ministerial advice from either the Chancellor or the College-General. Appointments to the Order of the Swan are therefore in the same category as the Order of Saint Elms and the Black Cross, and the Order of Merit. Today's announcement brings the number of Companions to seventy-three.

EMPIRE AND COUNCIL: "CATHOLIC CONSPIRACY", SAYS MAYOR OF ARLEEN

Brecht Goedgeburen, Mayor of Arleen-on-Esse and faction leader for the Reformist Party in the States-General, is not amused with Sovereign Henrick-Jan Brand's recent appointments. Goedgeburen was already sceptical about Salen's application to the Council of the North but was nonetheless convinced that the economic and global geopolitical advantages would outweigh its disadvantages. Now, the possibility of a joint Catholic imperial monarchy replacing two member states within this Council, and the following appointment of two "Imperial" diplomats by our nation's Sovereign - only the third Catholic to be elected Sovereign - makes him regret his 'change of mind'.

"Gunnlands recent proposition to restore a Holy Tiburan Empire, which eventually will dominate the Council, is a threat to Salian sovereignty and freedom of religion in the long run" says Brecht Goedgeburen. The appointment of the two Gunnish officials is a wrong signal and "a slap in the face to Salian patriots", states the Representative. It is no secret, however, that the Reformist Party, predominantly Protestant and fiercely republican, constantly blames and criticises the current coalition (of national unity run by the Christian Democrats, Green-Liberals and Conservatives) and Sovereign of the States Henrick-Jan Brand of favouring Catholic interests over national Salian and Protestant interests.

SALIAN MERCHANT SHIP VIOLENTLY INTERCEPTED IN THE ENGELLSEA: DIPLOMATIC CRISIS IN THE MAKING!?

Yesterday afternoon the medium-sized freight ship SMS Den Gezant was temporarily seized by unidentified vessels in the Engellsea Exclusive Economic Zone - about 120 nautical miles or 220 kms off the Smallander coast. The feeder was on route to Nedernesia's Vrijpoort harbour when at 15:00 PM two black-coloured naval units encircled the boat, demanding its captain to halt the ship. Masked men, armed and dangerous, entered the ship and scanned the cargo while the crew was being detained at the upper deck. An attempt to sabotage the ship failed, as an incoming Suomi naval patrol caused the marauders to quickly abort their mission and flea eastwards.

Given the fact that this civilian freighter was not violating national or international laws, the Salian Government is outraged and far from amused concerning this incident. Crew members testifying have stated the unidentified troopers clearly spoke French and Engellisc with a Thaumantic accent; and clearly saw the ships returning to contested Burgundian waters. As a result, the States' Foreign Office asks the Cussian, Clarenthian and Engellachian ambassadors in Salen to prove their nations' innocence in the matter. The Thaumantic Domain is currently involved in the Burgundian Civil War, which has raised much discontent and controversy in Salen.

The Ulkoministeriö wishes to convey our well wishes to the crew of the SMS Den Gezant and offer our continued support to the stability of the Gothic Sea and the Engellsea. We are only so lucky that the FNS Hamina was able to respond to the incident that your government has compared to an act of piracy. Both the inhabitants of Pohjanmaa, as well as the Ulkoministeriö, and the Free Navy are pleased that there appear to have been no casualties.

As the conflict in the region sows distrust and certainly instability, the Free Navy can only hope that it will continue to be able to respond to Salian distress calls in the region with haste. Yet, this cannot always be assured as an attack can happen far faster than a vessel’s ability to react to a radio call for help. During this period of time, the Free Navy will run continuous sorties through the Engellsea in effort to assist and protect shipping. Salian vessels are welcome to shadow these patrols whenever possible. The route may not always be direct, as patrols will work to stay away from combat zones and combat sorties, but the route should be safe.

The Commonwealth of Nedernesia is nothing less than outraged that a peaceful merchant marine vessel of any kind, but no less one underway to Vrijpoort, was illegally and dangerously attacked. This is simply unacceptable. We wish to form an emergency naval and air task force with our Pohjanmaan and Salian partners to prevent future similar acts of piracy. Only through a high degree of military and intelligence cooperation can we hope to eliminate this very nefarious and nasty threat to all our peoples' wellbeing.

My office will issue an official cable posthaste to establish the conditions necessary to form and implement said task force.

We further publicly deny any knowledge of the identity or origins of these alleged pirates possessing Engellkind’s accent or Thaumantic features. Dictator Heydendahl has publicly committed to avoiding civilian collateral damage at all costs, and affirms through this office now that piracy or molestation of neutral ships has never and will never be a feature of Engellachia’s participation in Operation Domain of Democracy.

Communication has always been our plan of action to avoid physical conflict; time and time again this office and its predecessor have reached out to our Post-Delegationist neighbor, only to receive little or no response. Salen may call upon this office and its embassy there, or reach out through its embassy in Vesper to cooperate civilly towards your investigation that we believe will eliminate our national assets from suspicion.

The freedom of the seas and the subsequent right of all peoples to navigate them is a quintessential founding principle not only of the Thaumantic or Engellkin countries, but indeed all countries of the world with which the sea touched their shores. Therefore, any attempt to deny or infringe upon that right is considered of the highest insult to the civilized nations of the world and will be regarded as such.

The justice system of the Treaty Lands is based on the premise that individuals are inherently innocent until found to be otherwise. Therefore, the Salian States’ Foreign Office’s decision to call upon the ambassadors of Beautancus, Clarenthia, and Engellachia under the assumption that not only have our three countries’ nationals engaged this heinous assault on civilization but also that our countries have sponsored the action, and then to demand that we prove innocence when no proof to the contrary has been presented, is a dangerous and ill-advised move on behalf of the United Salian States. Security of the Engellsea, and indeed all seas, is a primary concern of the Thaumantic Domain - to suggest otherwise ignores the centuries of history with which our countries were founded and have prospered.

Nevertheless, in the spirit of communication and comradery of nations, the Clarenthian Ambassador to the United Salian States will be available to aid in the investigation and eventual discovery of the true perpetrator of these crimes.

"MODERNISATION OF THE NATION" IN ITS FINAL PHASE

The Modernisation of the Nation, as the Great Constitutional Reform of 2020 is popularly known, has entered its final phase. By its completion in december, the Serene Salian States will have undergone its greatest political tranformation since the revision of the constitution in 1920. The current system of government, wich de facto primarily bore traits of a confederal model, will be replaced by an effecient, more centralised, federal entity. Certain powers situated at the state level will be transferred to the federal level - and vice versa. In the previous phases for instance, the reorganisation of the military and national political institutions have been (succesfully) realised. Now, civil institutions and administrative divisons at the regional and municipal levels are undergoing mergers and reforms. It is the governments - uncommonly a coalition of national unity - greatest achievement, considered a "long-needed necessity" according to the leading Reformist Party.​

The reforms come after a decades-lasting tradition of keeping "central authority" at bay. Recent world events however, both nearby and far away, have forced policy makers in Salen to evaluate the nations political architecture and face reality. Especially the manner by which it can respond to (inter)national crises required adequate improvement... The decision to reform in such a thourough and far-reaching manner remains nonetheless something of an "expected surprise", or a "reluctant necessity" to many.​

It is no secret that Heerndal sees itself as a beacon of democracy and stability in the region. Throughout history it has been sufficient for Salen to merely exist as a neutral and independent state, centered in the Gothic Sea amidst rivalling empires and ideologies. The fact that the Serene States were not controlled by any of these major powers, and that commerce and diplomacy was possible via Salen, ensured its existence as a buffer state and a sovereign nation. Today, Heerndal is no longer certain of its neighbours' intensions: post-delegationist states on both its frontiers are uttering the wish to spread the ideology, while more totalitarian regimes in the Gothic Sea are increasingly upscaling their military efforts in the region and Gallo-Germania. As a result, Salen's population and politicians alike have come to terms to the thought of a more centralised federation.​
