Elections Underway

Elections got underway for the Mayor of Talemaniki. Like all other municipal offices the mayor of the capital city is up for election. However, unlike other cities in the empire the man that runs the capital is one of the most powerful men in the empire. Historically the mayoral race in Talemaniki is the gauge on the temperament of the Talemantine people.

To begin the elections the emperor released the names of those approved to run for the prestigious office. Of them was Graziano Napolitano, current deputy mayor, who is favored to win.

Also there was some snubs for the election. Ruberto Morbidelli, the socialist candidate was forbidden from participation in the race and will not be on the ballot.

Bishop Appointed First Minister

The emperor appointed Bishop Alexis Florioli as the nation's first minister. Bishop Florioli, a native from the east, will begin his duties as head of the nation's government tomorrow. The bishop said following his appointment, "I hope that Talemantros will become more acquainted with its neighbors to a prosperous South."​

The Axifloan Confederation looks upon the so-called "snubbing" in Talemantros with heartfelt approval. Socialists are nothing more than communists in disguise, exploiting democracy in order to infiltrate strong governments and rot them from within, thus bringing about their revolution. Such a move, no doubt, was made by the Talemantric Emperor to safe-guard his people and nation from the corruption of the Reds and we must applaud this, not condemn it.

Mr. Morbidelli's candidacy was rejected for several reasons that could have proven detriment to the city and the government at large. We would also like to point out that the Mayor of Talemaniki, by his office, receives a spot on the Emperor's Imperial Council of State. We would also like to point out that citizens will be electing their municipal officials in every city throughout the empire.

Empire Prepares for a National Celebration

Talemaniki and the empire prepares for a massive celebration. The year 2010 marks the 1400th anniversary of the reign of the house of De Vesci over the Imperial Throne. The De Vescis came to power in 610 with the proclamation and coronation of Emperor Beniamino I following a civil war.

The Civil War was between Emperor Phocas (602-610) and then Exarch of the North, Beniamino De Vesci. Phocas over threw Emperor Maximan, the las of the Talemantinian Dynasty began at the empire's founding. Phocas also slaughtered the male members of the imperial family and the emperor himself. the women were imprisoned. After several years of tyrannical rule several generals rebelled and came under the leadership of De Vesci son-in-law of Emperor Maximan. The Army of Phocas was repeated and he retreated behind the walls of Talemaniki. The gates were opened to De Vesci by an elite guard lead by Phocas's own son, and the people proclaimed him emperor. Phocas was captured and executed.

The story of Phocas's capture is one known by every imperial citizen. The defeated emperor was brought before Beniamino I and he asked his defeated foe. "Is this how you have ruled, wretch?" and the former emperor replied, "And will you rule better?" Phocas was summary executed ending the civil war.

While this may be a story of the beginnings of the De Vescis it is also the story of the current emperor, who came to power after his father was kill by an fail communist coup in 1946. The late emperor's son of three years old was proclaimed emperor with his mother and chief of the Varangian Guard as regents. When he came of age he assumed the reigns of government and has held them ever since.

The Anniversary celebrations will be a year long celebration with the festivities culminating on the day of Beniamino I's ascension to the throne. the festivities are to begin in 2010.

Socialists begin write-in Campaign

The Campaign for Mayor of Talemaniki took another twist and turn following the dismissal of Socialist Candidate Ruberto Morbidelli from the ballet. Deep in the elections laws passed by the Senate in 1758 any citizen is allowed to write in a name for any candidate not on the ballet. This allows for serious campaigns to run a write-in.

While the Talemantine Empire is not the most democratic nation in Europe any elections official from any nation can attest that a write-in campaign is the hardest to run. Most are usually doomed from the start. However, the Socialists are using this backdoor to victory to the fullest advantage. Begining the new campaign Ruberto Morbidelli hosted a campaign rally in the Horace Forum in old Talemaniki. The palace approved the rally in the historical center from outside pressure from democratic neighbors, most notably from the Levantine States over worsening relations.

First Minister Bishop Alexis Florioli commented on the rally, "The Empire is still committed to its democratic roots in the ancient Tiburian Republic and we mantain those to this day. I wish Mr. Morbidelli a good campaign and I extend that wish to all of the candidates for Mayor of Talemaniki."

Patriarch Batholomew Visits Serbovia

Landing in Petrograd today kicked off the beginning of the Patriarch's tour through Europe. His holiness arrived in Petrograd to meet with his Serbovian counterpart Patriarch Dimitar III. Being welcomed to much fanfare in the Republic the Ecumenical Patriarch blessed the crowd at the airport and offer blessings to the Serbovian nation.

During the visit Patriarch Bartholomew spent time visiting the faithful of Serbovia. Schedualed visits to Orthodox Community Centers around Petrograd, and also visiting various humanitarian projects sponsered by the church. His holiness did take time out to visit and bless victims of the Slavic Flu in Serbovia.

During the day following talks with Dimitar III, the Patriarch gave a speech addressing a few issues.

"Many have said that there is a growing rift in the Orthodox Church between the Eastern and Western churches. I can say for sure that this is not true. I have witnessed that our universal faith is stronger than ever and we will continue to hold hands in fellowship. Our communion has survived for centuries and we will continue to endure in the face of Islam and the atheism promoted by socialism.

We can truely rest easy with the purest of confidence in the true Christian bastion in Serbovia. I play that the brotherhood we share here today continues until the end of days."

The speech gave much praise to the Serbovians and lacked any mention of increasing concerns over the extrodinary closeness between the Serbovian government and the church. However, the speech wasn't without any criticism regarding the Serbovian Orthodox Church Outside Serbovia.

"In a time when our church is challenged on all sides from Islam, Atheism and other organizations, we need to stay together. The disagreement in the Serbovian Church shall be mended and this issue will be an important aspect in the future of our universal church."

The patriarch made it a point to make the reconcilliation between the Serbovian Church and is seccessionalist group of emmigrants. In the evening his holiness will dine with Supreme Leader Vladimir Rodzianko. The next day the Ecumenical Patriarch is expected to continue his tour to Dominici and then to Antioch and Jerusalem.

Chancellor Reports on Empire's Finances

Chancellor of the Consistory, Bishop Alexis Florioli, alongside the Finance Minisnter released the nation's budget following approval by the emperor. The budget was within the fiscal decrees of the emperor that has demanded the budget be balanced and to maintain the empire's financial integrity.

The budget this year included a raise in taxes on wealthier citizens as well as a cut on businesses opperating in the country. The cut in comercial taxes is an effort to increase commerce and to make the Talemantine Empire more favorable to foreign businesses. There was also a minimal increase in energy taxes on the use of electricity in the proposed plans to update the nation's power grid. The increas in energy tax will help fund the improvements as well as attempt to decrease the strain on the grid.

However, there was an increase in military spending, prompting sources to say there will be an increase of forces in the Northwestern provinces, known in Carentiania as the Vrbas Kraj. This region is valuable due to its booming coal-mining industry. The military says the need is due to a more active Carentiania to the North.

The Finance Ministry also reported that there was a trade surplus due to increased exports. Overall the budget reports a 47 billion budget surplus.

Government Cements Education Treaty With Eiffelland

Chancellor Bishop Alexis Florioli announced the completion of negotiation with the Eiffelander government over a treaty regarding education between the two states. Previously in order to attend a higher education facility in the Talemantine Empire you must have obtained a degree from a Talemantine secondary education institution or be approved by a special board under the supervision of the Consistory. This has made it difficult for foreign students to come to the Talemantine Empire for educational purposes.

The restrictions are even tougher for students in secondary educational programs. There is no special board to approve students seeking to enter in secondary eduactional institutions and families of students wanting to enroll in Talemantine facilities needed special approval from the Education Minister. This also includes the children of foreign diplomats and other prominent families. This has been a repeated criticism over the closeness of the Talemantine state and the lack of axcess of Talemantine educational institutions to the world.

This treaty is to be the beginning of the end of that closed off veiw. According to the treaty the rules will change effecting only Eiffellander citizens. Talemantine Universities will be allowed to accept students with a degree from an Eiffelander secondary education institution. No longer will Eiffellander students have to seek special approval from the Imperial Education Advisory Board. Further changes will be to allow Eiffelander citizens access to Talemantine secondary educational institutions, removing the neccessary ministrial approval for enrollment. This is expected to help Eiffellander nationals living within the empire.

To further cement this educational exchange between the Kingdom and the Empire, Blachernae Palace announced that beginning the next term Prince Sebastiano will be completing his secondary education in Trier, Eiffelland. Officals in Talemaniki and Trier say the treaty will be finalized, when Waylon X visits Trier following the New Year Celebrations in Wiese. Chancellor Florioli said that the empire was considering simular treaties with other nations and a possible complete reform of the empire's policies toward foreign students.

Emperor Names Kediri Pretender as Muslim Liasion

Emperor Waylon X, name the pretender to the former Kediri throne and the government's official muslim liasion. Ala Abbud Al-Wahhab, great nephew of the last King of Kediri, went into exile in the Talemantine Empire in the early fifties following the Islamic revolution in Kediri. During the Kediri revolution nearly the entire royal family was massacred when the revolutionaries stormed the palace. Ala Abbud Al-Wahhab, grandson of the late king's younger brother, was one of the few and the senior male heir that escaped the massacre and fled with the remnents of the family to Talemaniki.

The Emperor granted Al-Wahhab and his family refuge in the empire and recognized the prince as the rightful King and ruler of Kediri. At the request of Ala Abbud, the Empire invaded Kediri begining the Talemantine-Kediri War of 1954 to restore Al-Wahhab to the Kediri throne. The war saw initital gains only to end in a stalemate that continues to this day. Currently the Empire does not recognize the revolutionary regime in Kediri and maintains Ala Abbud as the King and permits a government-in-exile for Kediri.

Now Ala Abbud Al-Wahhab will be instrumental in reshaping the empire's policies toward the Islamic world including the numourous Kediri refugees in the Eastern Provinces.

Government to Privatize Several Industries

Today Treasury and Commerce Secretaries, Egidio Reale and Ottavia Questi respectively, announced that the Imperial Government will begin selling off its government owned corporations. Over the past century the Imperial government has nationalized many industries in order to garner efficiency and control over the nation. Now the government will be privatizing these industries to make the Talemantine Empire more competitive against foreign states.

"It is time we allow the free market to lift up our country, economy, and people. We can expand our economy by bringing in more efficient operators at minimal cost. This will make the empire more attractive to foreign businesses." - Commerce Secretary Ottavia Questi.

Within the next few days the Consistory will be announcing the companies/industries that will be open to the market. The former companies will be abolished and be replaced with regulatory agencies to monitor to ensure appropriate standards are kept. Among the industries privatized, will be the empire's utilities, coal mining, communications, and transportation.
