The Burgundian Principle: How Big Am I?

Currently there is no official scale for use with the map. This can lead to a dissonance in the way we conceptualize our nations. Just as we cry out about a country who power-games by strategically placing their mountains and deserts on the borders without good reason, so should we cry out when a country declares that your jets must fly twice as far because their kilometers are smaller than yours. To avoid this ridiculousness and create a parity of understanding so that we can all have a rough idea of how big we are in relationship to each other, the Burgundian Principle was created. Not an official ruling, the current map maker has conceded that "Bourgogne is around Austria-Hungary size, or 551,695 sq km."

This gives us something to compare against. The best way to do this is to count pixels. As future iterations of the map change, we can adjust the scale of the pixels as required.

Now, here's how we figure out how many sq km = 1 pixel: We use the Magic Wand tool in photoshop, set to 32 tolerance, anti-alias, and contiguous (should be the default). 32 tolerance just makes sure we get what we want; anti-alias helps us grab a bit of the borders without over-estimating ourselves, and contiguous makes sure we don't select everything on the planet. Now, we use the shift key to select all of the various islands. Once this is done, we open Window > Histogram. This window will tell you how many pixels you have selected. In the case of Bourogne, there are 18,103 pixels in the current iteration of the map. 551,695/18,103 = ~30.475 sq km/pixel. This roughly translates to a pixel with sides of 5.52km length. This is an equal area projection; people in the far north imagine their countries as big as they see them on the map, not 1/5 the size.

Using this frame of reference, we can calculate the area of ANY country on the planet. We can also use the Select tool (in rectangle), with rulers set to pixels, to calculate the distance between any two points on the map using the Window > Info tool to see height/width and calculate the hypotenuse.

You can feel free to calculate your own area, but if you aren't able to, feel free to post here and tag me and I'll be sure to try to get a response to you in a timely fashion.

Below are nations area calculated in pixels, sq km, and in parentheses compared with the nearest real world nation by area (sometimes with a note related to a different comparison, like larger or smaller than x)
Bourgogne: 18,103 pixels = 551,695 sq km = ~30.475 sq km per pixel = 5.52 km per side (Ukraine)
Kadikistan: 130,396 pixels = 3,973,818 sq km (India + Pakistan + Bangladesh)
Ashkelon: 34,573 pixels = 1,053,612 sq km (Colombia/Ethiopia/Bolivia/Mauritania/Egypt)
Pelasgia: 43,382 pixels = 1,322,066 sq km (Peru/Chad)
Engellex: 12,005 pixels = 365,852 sq km (Japan)
Nichtstein: 6,575 pixels = 200,373 sq km (Belarus)
ME: 11,412 pixels = 347,780 sq km (Germany/metro France - slightly larger than the Philippines)
Eiffelland 10,055 pixels = 306,426 sq km (Oman/Poland)
Saaremaa (Saar): 15,451 pixels = 470,869 sq km (Cameroon/Turkmenistan - bigger than Sweden)
(Loago): 23,378 pixels = 712,445 sq km (Zambia)

It seems like countries are smaller than I thought they were

Jurzan is slightly bigger than Equador at 287,775 sq km.

Borovanger is slightly smaller than Belarus at 205,249 sq km.

I do have to say that I did imagine Jurzan as being significantly bigger than Equador. Interestingly enough, Jurzan has the same population density as China.

Could you also do my puppets? Milesia (small Kadikistani-coloured strip in Ivernia) and Calidia (Small Kadikistani-coloured strip east of Lauenburg).

Thanks

Not that it changes much, but what period of Austria-Hungary are we talking about? :D It was 676,615 km^2 in 1914, if we're to trust Wikipedia.

Otherwise, I'm fine with whatever people to go with, really, as in the end it doesn't really matter that much in the end.

Please all keep in mind that this is not official and will almost 100% change when and if we ever come around to introducing a formal scale.
