The Muslim Shield

The Muslim Shield… A term mostly used during the Haalik and early Demian eras. What really meant was a mystery for the foreign peoples and by now a mystery even for modern Altaic people. Opening a history text book we found the current definition to describe this term: The Muslim Shield was the name given to Uroduah Muslim communities that were built on the western banks of the Ier River. Okay, and? It really doesn’t give you any information. The current article will explain the motives and ideas behind the creation of The Muslim Shield.

1470 Altai, or better said the Haalik Sultanate; it was the 7[SUP]th[/SUP] year of the reign of Sultan Fariid III. In the area south of the Altai Mountains nomadic Uroduah populations were making a living by growing camels and goats. An offer is given to some of the tribes, to move north of the mountains. The offer came as a surprise after hundreds of years of skirmishes in which the Altaic population stopped the settlement of Uroduan people in the lush plains of the Riff.

The messages sent from Dara to the Ier Fortress by Sultan Fariid clearly showed that the Altaians saw mutuality between the anti Talemantine sentiment shown both home and abroad in Hajir and Jurzan: “I need those men. The Muslim, like the Diagist is a fierce warrior. They do not fear death. But, the main problem of the Diagist is the fact that many of them are opened to new ideas. To use them as soldiers, it is needed for them to be obtuse so that they will sacrifice in the name of the Great Spirit. In Jurzan and Hajir there is a strong hate for the Christian Southern Tiburan Empire. The Tiburans need to be destroyed and for this I need firstly people that will first kill and then ask questions.”

At first we didn’t know what the message stipulated when he said “are opened to new ideas”. At least we didn’t understand it the way the Sultan saw it. To continue the search for information, we looked into the archives of the Abbas El-Hasem Temple from Dialgorod. In a letter written by High Priest Shahrazad Alizadeh, notice the fact that the ruler of the Diagist faith was a woman in those years; she literally described how the Sultan saw this so called “open mind”:

“My Pagos, open minded people are the ones that look at more civilized people and then adapt their own tradition to reach the same level of civilization. I cannot see how you can call the people that are influenced by the Tiburans as open minded. They are traitors. They are people that turned they back on the Great Spirit and on their Altaic fatherland. They are traitors. I also can’t understand them. The Tiburans aren’t as civilized as the Diagist and Muslim peoples. […]”.

What we can see from this letter was that the main problem of the Haalik Sultanate was the continuous rise of the Christian population in western Altai. This period also being called the First Christian Wave. So, to change this trend an action was needed to show the people that Christianity wasn’t loved in Himyar and that the Diagists and Muslims stand together to stop the growing influences from the Talemantine Empire. So, it was clear that the Sultanate has chosen to displace nomadic Uroduan tribes from the Sea of Fire to the Riff, thus creating a shield of hate, may I say, made of Diagists and Muslims to stop the Christian influences.

It was actually shown that the Sultan was prepared to do anything to create this shield. By this action he changed a course of how the Altaians saw the Uroduan. Since de Dava city states before the Tiburan conquest of the Riff to the rule of the earlier sultan, Jalil, the Altaians thought of themselves as being superior to the nomadic Uroduah from the eastern parts of the Sea of Fire and more civilized than the Tiburan Empire. Now they needed help. So, why wouldn’t an Uroduan move to the Riff? It had anything from public baths to rain and lush plains. All they dream and wanted to see. It was a win-win situation, the Uroduan moved from the desert and the Altaians had the ally they needed.

In a conclusion, it can easily be shown that this move was beneficial for the Sultanate as the numbers of Christians began to lower and with the help of the Uroduan, a Talemantine invasion was repulsed. But this move would also bring the destruction of the Haalik Sultanate in 1608 when Raed Abari mobilizes the Muslim population and manages to capture Dara creating the Abari Sultanate. This will also bring in 1670 to Altai, the “Year without Diagism”, which the Abari dynasty obliged everyone to convert to Islamism. Even if in reality, the majority of the population remained Diagist, the displacement of the Muslims in Riff led 200 years later to a complete change of the nobility, from a Diagist one to a Muslim one.

The years of Change, 1788-1790, was also the first in which pro-republican forces would fight pro-monarchist in Altai. The year of 1788 began when Sultan Hussein II Abari dies without sons or daughters but with a 2-years old nephew as heir. In his testament he wrote that he wanted a council made of a Diagist, a Muslim and a Christian to rule until the child which would be Hussein III will take the throne.
After the Slavic migration at the beginning of the 18[SUP]th[/SUP] century, there were 3 important boyar families that were eligible to take the throne: The Demians, The Tomaszewsky and the Dabrowsky. The creation of the council proved a difficult task, as the Tomaszewsky and Dabrowsky families were both Christian at that time, the former one converting to Diagism in 1830. To prevent any strife between the two boyar families, the council created was made of 2 Christian members, 2 Diagist members and 1 Muslim member. The current composition was chosen because of the large Diagist and Christian communities in Altai in those days. The council was made of: Dragan Demian and Krzysztof Gorsky as the Diagists; Emil Tomaszewsky and Stepan Dabrowsky as Christians and Ismet Basri as Muslim. Also the representation of the country at world level was awarded to Tomaszewsky in the first year and will alternate between all of them, all holding the office of “Lider”/Leader for a year. The rest of the 1788 passed quietly.

In 1789, the Abari monarchy was again hit be the event of the assassination of the child Hussein Abari. Until present days it is still unknown who ordered the assassination of the 3-years old child but it is believed to be orchestrated by Ismet Basri. One month after the death of the only heir of the dynasty and thus the end of the Abari family, Ismet Basri came to the council with a proposal: the creation of a republic. Even if he declared that a democratic republic was necessary for a modern nation, he wanted to declare himself president for life.

In a meeting with Stepan Gorsky he told him that he needed the allegiance of Diagist nobility. In a journal entry, Gorsky described how Ismet tried to manipulate him to bring Dragan Demian into the plot then de a coup. Gorsky broke all contact with Basri the following days and retreated with Dragan to Dara. Thus began the Succession War.

Altaisk: The highest capital

Altaisk, known as the boyar’s resort is a city built in the ending years of the 18[SUP]th[/SUP] century. It was built by the orders of Sultan Hussein II for the growing Slavic nobility. The main architect was Tatyana Kosmodemianskaya. She builds a city with mostly two storey buildings in Neo-Renaissance style. In 1800, Dragan Demian moved the capital from the overcrowded city of Dara to Altaisk. Since then, the city is in a continuous growth.

It is also called the highest capital because of its placement deep in the Transaltaica Pass at 2,000 meters altitude. Dragan choose to move his capital to Altaisk after he saw how easily Basri’s soldiers could defend themselves in the city. During the 3th Talemantine-Altaic war it was again seen how hard it is to conquer the city, being under siege for at least a year and a half without falling to Talemantine invaders.
During the war, much of the city was destroyed. The socialist government saw this as an opportunity to build flats to make more people move in the capital. In the post war years the population has risen from 100,000 to approximately 350,000 inhabitants. Growth of the city is now limited in the south because of the proximity of the steep slopes of the Altai mountains.

The Transaltaica Pass- The only road that links the Sea of fire region to the rest of Altai;
The Victoria Palace- The government’s palace, named this way after the victory in the war in the 50s;
The Dava Museum- The only museum in the nation that presents pre Tiburan Altaic civilization;
